Emily House helps women in transition Catholic Charities moves shelter to Lafayette to ease transition into long-term housing BY CLAIRE SALINAS

Special to The Advocate Catholic Charities of Acadiana has been meeting the needs of homeless women and their families in Acadiana through the New Life Center in Opelousas for 25 years. In April, the shelter was relocated to Lafayette and renamed the Emily House. “The majority of the women and their children that we serve are from Lafayette,” said Ben Broussard, director of External Affairs for Catholic Charities of Acadiana. “When you provide care to these women, you are uprooting them from whatever is left of their natural support systems, and when you’re ready to re-house them [and return their kids to school], moving them back to Lafayette added trauma in an already traumatic situation, so ideally we wanted to provide care for them in their natural community.” On average, Catholic Charities of Acadiana rehouses 25 individuals from homelessness to housing every month through all of their shelter programs, which include the Emily House, St. Joseph Shelter for men and St. Michael Center for Veterans. The move has already improved rehousing efforts of the organization, since they are now in closer proximity to more available housing for their clients. “We had a woman with three children who left an abusive relationship, sought shelter at the Emily House and was rehoused within 60 days,” said Broussard. “She was able to regain stability and was provided access to counseling; all of this helped her to regain her self-esteem, and within a short period of time, she was able to ﬁnd a job in her ﬁeld.” With a limited number of beds in the

shelter, the Emily House prioritizes those who are most vulnerable when deciding who to admit into the shelter. The ﬁrst level that potential clients are assessed on is their vulnerability, or how likely they are to die on the street, as well as their acuity, which is how likely they are to help themselves and take care of themselves. “In the same way someone in an emergency room would choose to take in someone having a heart attack over someone with a sprained ankle,” said Broussard. “We’re going to take the heart attack every time when it comes to priorities.” In March, Catholic Charities of Acadiana began operating a low barrier shelter to offer night-time sleeping arrangements, as a separate effort from their emergency shelters, where beds are available based on vulnerability and acuity assessments. While the primary focus of the Emily House is to provide shelter to women and their families, the organization also works to return people experiencing homelessness back to their natural support systems whenever possible, and helps them to identify long-term, sustainable, permanent housing. As the holidays approach, the organization is focusing, more than ever, on their overarching mission. “Catholic Charities of Acadiana often experiences an outpouring of generosity towards those we serve during the holidays,” said Broussard. “It is important to our mission to not only care for those who suffer, but to encourage every person in our community to participate in the Gospel calling to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and welcome the stranger.” For more information about the Emily House or Catholic Charities of Acadiana, call (337) 235-4972 or visit catholiccharitiesacadiana.org.

Credit score Check your credit report — to know your score and to see if there is anything you want to dispute. You can order free credit reports from each of the three major credit reporting agencies through annualcreditreport.com, the only authorized website for free credit reports, according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. Your credit score will be key to the mortgage interest rate you can get. Between now and when you apply, here’s how to maintain or improve your score: • Be sure to pay bills on time. Payment history is a top factor for lenders. • Pay down credit card debt as much as you can while still saving for your down payment. • Avoid applying for new credit cards or closing old ones. Both can decrease your credit score.

If spring looks like the time you’ll be buying a new home, now may seem be too soon to start trying to pin down a specific property. But with a few months to go, it’s time to lay the groundwork. After all, you’ll need to get your finances in shape, know how to get your best deal on a mortgage, and figure out where, within your budget, you want to live. These things take time, but start now and by the end of winter you’ll be ready to house hunt and then spring into action when you find “the one.”

Price range and down payment Mortgage calculators available through your bank or online can help you ﬁgure out what you can afford. Work out your own price range based on what the calculators say. Do those monthly payments look reasonable or like a stretch? Do you expect your monthly expenses to rise, maybe because of a planned car purchase? How long do you expect to stay in this house? Is it worth a bit of a stretch because you plan to stay more than ﬁve to seven years? Or would you be more comfortable keeping payments at a lower level? To determine how much you’ll have for a down payment, assess what you have in hand and what you can realistically save between now and spring. Don’t forget there will be closing costs. Home for the Holidays winner announced Fundraiser benefits local shelter-related charities John E. Richard II of Lafayette is the winner of the 2018 Home for the Holidays Grand Prize. His name was drawn Dec. 5 during a live broadcast on KATC-TV 3. In the days following the drawing, Richard was accompanied by friends for a personal tour of his new home — the Home for the Holidays. Richard was overwhelmed with the home’s appeal and expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the project. “Buy a ticket,” says Richard, “Just buy a ticket. You never expect that your name will be selected. I bought the ticket because it’s Christmas, the season of giving. off with the campaign’s net proceeds benefitting local shelter-related agencies. The 2018 Home for the Holidays is located in Bayou Tortue Manor subdivision and is valued at over $480,000. It was designed by Jarrod Hebert, architect, and built by Lisa and Bill Schoeffler of Schoeffler Built Homes using as many donations and discounts of materials and labor from AHBA members as possible. This year’s campaign was one of the most successful ones to date with 5,500 tickets sold. In early 2019, proceeds from the Home for the Holidays will be distributed to local nonprofit organizations including Faith House, Healing House for Grieving Children, Lafayette Habitat for Humanity, and St. Michael Center for Veterans, a shelter of Catholic Services of Acadiana. Home for the Holidays has been able to give over $2 million to these adopted charities in the last 13 years.
