Marie Ducote established Cajun Food Tours to carry people through Acadiana, serve them samples of indigenous cuisine and explain how it came to be. The Original Cajun Food Tour consists of five tasting stops in Lafayette on a customized bus tour. Other tours offered include a walking food tour of Breaux Bridge, a tour of restaurants serving international cuisine and the new “All-Day Cajun Experience” with a trip to Vermilionville, a swamp tour on Lake Martin, Cajun dance lessons and, of course, food. Special to The Advocate The holidays are fast approaching and that means visitors coming to town. There’s so much to see and do in Acadiana but where to start? Here are five places to take out-of-town guests that will provide them with a great introduction or an explanation of Cajun Country.

Start with history and culture at Lafayette’s two historic villages. Vermilionville Living History and Folk Life Park consists of 18 historic structures along the Vermilion River, offering visitors a history lesson into the Cajun and Creole culture of south Louisiana. The buildings date from between 1765 to 1890 and include a schoolhouse and a church. One home includes a garden indicative of what early settlers grew as cures for common ailments. Bilingual docents in period costumes explain the significance of the buildings and the traditions of South Louisiana residents. Weekly dances and special events happen at the performance center and special events are held throughout the year, including the Old-Time Christmas at Vermilionville from Dec. 12-23. In addition, La Cuisine de Maman (Mama’s Kitchen) restaurant serves up traditional Cajun and Creole dishes. For more information, visit www. vermilionville.org. Acadian Village is another site where historic homes and businesses were moved to create a village, providing visitors with a hands-on history lesson. Funds raised through Acadian Village help the Lafayette Association for Retarded Citizens and its biggest fundraiser happens during the holidays. Noel Acadien au Village occurs nightly Nov. 30 through Dec. 23, featuring

There are several museums in Lafayette, many of which have special events for the holidays, and the Zoo of Acadiana, which hosts the annual Safari of Lights Nov. 23-24, 30 and Dec. 7-30. Christmas at the Alexandre Mouton House,

adorned with period decorations and providing a history of Lafayette, will be Dec. 1-31. The Natural History Museum and the Children’s Museum of Acadiana are musts for families with small children, and the latter will host an annual New Year’s Noon Carnival and Countdown on Dec. 31. If you love craft beers, the folks at Bayou Teche Brewing in Arnaudville are happy to give you a tour of their facility on Saturdays and provide samples. Two wonderful day trips lie south of Lafayette in Iberia Parish and both involve “islands,” which are really salt domes appearing like islands above Louisiana’s flat land-

Tips on taking control of winter energy bills You may think it’s inevitable – the cooler weather means that your home’s energy bills will rise. Whether you are turning up the heat or turning on the holiday lights, energy usage tends to increase during these cooler months. Yet, there are many steps you can take — from small adjustments to major modifications — to stay warm and use less energy this winter. Here are a few simple tips to get you started.

Don’t heat an empty home If household members are at school and work during the day, or you are traveling for the holiday season, adjust your thermostat to limit the amount of wasted heat. While you can do this manually each day, programmable and smart thermostats can automatically keep your house cozy when it counts and save energy when everyone’s away. The selection of smart thermostats is ever-expanding. Many keep track of how much you would save based on your region, size of home and heating type. In many cases, this investment results in significant savings. Some utility companies also offer free programmable or smart thermostats to encourage their customers to use energy wisely. Check with your local utility to see what programs they offer.

Create a place to entertain Remodeling ideas for making your home more welcoming Metro Media Some homes are seemingly built for entertaining, while others may need a little help to make them more fit for hosting dinner, holiday gatherings or an evening with friends. Overall, one-quarter of people entertain guests in their home either daily or weekly across the globe. One-third entertain monthly, according to findings from GFK Insights. People who open their homes to loved ones may want to make some modifications to their spaces to improve the experience for all involved.

Tame the clutter Look for ways to reduce clutter in rooms where entertaining takes place. Built-ins with bookshelves and cabinets can hide electronics and wayward toys or collectibles. Focus attention on the entryway, hanging hooks for collecting coats, keys and shoes, so they do not overrun the foyer. Remove any knickknacks or other breakable items from shelves or on coffee tables to free up more space.

Improve conversation seating Arrange tables and chairs to create conversation nooks for guests who want to talk and get to know one another better. Consider moving out big and bulky sofas in favor of love seats or comfortable chairs that will take up less room and improve flow in entertaining areas.

Find the pieces you like Think about how you tend to entertain and then cater your space to those preferences. For example, a large dining table with fold-out extensions or leaves is ideal for someone who regularly hosts formal dinner parties.
