Do-it-yourself tips for outdoor decorating BY CHERE COEN
Special to The Advocate Bringing the outside in with evergreen boughs and trees has long been a holiday tradition — a way to assure those huddled indoors that spring will return eventually while contributing to a festive mood. Perhaps ironically, those annual traditions now include outdoor decorating with lights, yard art and plants, expressing the same cheer to passers-by. For those who want to decorate their yards and homes this holiday season, Acadiana gardeners have some tips. “My belief is to start small and add every year. This make your display look new each year,” said Tim Fitzpatrick, gardener at Acadian Village, a Lafayette attraction that dresses up in thousands of lights for its Noel Acadien au Village. Fitzpatrick suggests purchasing quality items that will last for many holiday seasons and moving them around from year to year to give your yard a new

look. Mary Mayeux, who owns All Seasons nursery in Lafayette with her husband Peter, offers three tips for those wishing to decorate their yards for the holidays. First, for those wanting a more traditional approach, incorporate either artificial or natural garlands and wreaths to the front of a home. Both make excellent choices for shaping around the front door and may be embellished with Christmas balls or red berries. For those looking for color and creativity, especially gardeners, Mayeux suggests purchasing large urns or pots to place on either side of the front door. They can be dressed in holiday colors or neutral ones for use with other holidays such as Easter. “Some people like to pick out something that can go year-round,” she said. “These are things to think about before you do the decorating.” Place two pots on either side of the door and fill with favorite plants, she explained. “In the pot, you’re going to want to put a thriller, filler and a spiller,” she said. The thrillers are usually knee-high or thigh-high plants, such as the eye-catching amazon dianthus. The filler is what you place around the main plant, colorful items such as pansies. The spillers literally spill over the pot and create another level of color and attraction. White alyssum makes a lovely spiller, Mayeux said, giving the overall pot “a beautiful presence.” These pots or urns may be filled with either shade or sun plants, she added. “They can take you from Thanksgiving all the way to February,” Mayeux said. The third tip is to incorporate trees by the front doors, which may be decorated with a string of white lights. “A four-foot Fraser fir is beautiful and it smells,” she said. Plants Mayeux recommends for this time of year include camellias, snapdragons and petunias. Red cyclamen is great to pair with creeping Jenny and/ or white alyssum. “It’s popular right now because it’s so vibrant,” Meyeux said of red cyclamen. “That’s a good Christmas classic look.” Kimberly Culotta, heritage gardener

If your goal is an eye-catching display of holiday lights, consider starting small and adding each year. Tim Fitzpatrick, a gardener at Acadian Village, recommends rearranging the display each year to keep it looking new. at Vermilionville, loves Louisiana natives for decorating. The historic village uses many of these natural plants in its annual decorating to stay in tune with what residents of the 19th century would have used. Culotta recommends yaupon holly, which sprouts red berries in December. Bald cypress turns a rust-colored brown by Christmas but if residents gather leaves now they may be incorporated into the decorations. “And bald cypress smells really nice,” Culotta added. Pine boughs and pine cones and evergreen cedar branches are always a nice touch, she said. Muscadine vines are easy to bend and shape into wreaths and mistletoe may be found in trees throughout South Louisiana. Residents who hunt may add items such as deer antlers and turkey feathers to the scene. “Rosemary is also good, even if it’s in pots,” Culotta said. “It’s an evergreen and you can decorate it.” For those wanting hands-on instruction, All Seasons offers weekly seminars and classes in gardening.

Holiday song evokes images of cool-weather treat Metro Media Without the familiar holiday tune â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Christmas Song,â&#x20AC;? many folks might not even know about a relatively obscure nut that tends to only turn up around the holiday season. When Nat King Cole sings â&#x20AC;&#x153;chestnuts roasting on an open ďŹ re,â&#x20AC;? heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s referring to the starchy, sweet and ďŹ&#x201A;avorful chestnut, which is an edible nut from a tree native to the northern hemisphere. Chestnuts belong to the beech or Fagaceae family of trees, which are native to the mountainous forests of China, Japan, Europe, and North America. Chestnuts were once staples of North American diets because they could be found quite readily along the Eastern seaboard, where many early settlers ďŹ rst landed their ships. Chestnuts were once the most popular ingredient in 18th and 19th cuisine and became widely linked to Christmas dinner. Early American chestnuts were small and ďŹ&#x201A;avorful and were abundant in late fall. Chestnuts have a sweet ďŹ&#x201A;avor when eaten raw. However, they take on
a nutty essence when roasted. Chestnut street vendors could be found sending off wafting aromas of inviting chestnuts from corner to corner. Unfortunately, a chestnut tree blight in the early 20th century decimated nearly all American Chestnut trees, leading to the demise of the domestic chestnut industry â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and perhaps contributing to a declining interest in chestnuts with winter meals. Today, most chestnuts are imported from Korea, China and Italy. The Agricultural Marketing Resource Center reports that American chestnut production is less than 1 percent of total world production. The United States has 919 farms producing chestnuts on more than 3,700 acres. There may be hope for reviving interest in chestnuts as new research is trying to prevent the Asian blight that wiped out trees long ago. Chestnuts traditionally pop up in stores during the holiday season. They are relatively low in calories or fats, but are a rich source of minerals, vitamins and dietary ďŹ ber. They can be incorporated into many different meals and are worthy additions to a healthy diet.

Get your fireplace ready to enjoy safely Maintenance varies depending on type of fireplace There’s nothing like cozying up to a glowing fireplace on a winter evening. For a gathering of friends and family sharing delicious food, festive music and warm conversation or for quiet time with a cup of cocoa and a good book, a crackling fire sets the scene. But whether yours is a wood-burning or gas-burning fireplace, each works safest and best with proper maintenance and care. So before you light a match or ignite the pilot light, consider the following:
Gas fireplaces A gas fireplace provides the comfort and style of a wood-burning unit but requires far less maintenance. Even so, it is best to have your gas fireplace inspected and adjusted by a professional every year. Wood-burning fireplaces Hiring a professional chimney sweep at least once every one to five years (depending on how often you use your fireplace) is the best way to ensure your chimney is safe to use. Flammable by-products from your wood fire build up inside the chimney, so it’s important to have those cleaned out to prevent them from catching fire. A chimney sweep can also inspect your chimney cap to be sure it is intact, keeping out moisture and debris. If you have a fresh air vent to supply the fireplace with combustion air, open it and the damper before you light your fire. Then remember to close both when you are not using the fireplace so warm air does not escape.
Wood fires When it’s time to make the first fire of the season, clean the firebox of any ashes from last year and dust that has accumulated during the off-season. Check that your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are in working order. A well-fitting screen will
help contain sparks and embers and keep pets and small children safe. Fires should always be built on andirons or a grate to protect the fireplace floor. Air flow under the grate also helps produce an efficient fire. Seasoned hardwood is the best fuel for a wood fireplace. It burns hotter than green wood, helping to minimize dangerous creosote buildup. Pine logs take much longer to dry and contain more sap than hardwood, and opinions are mixed on whether it is advisable to burn them in a fireplace at all. Never leave a fire unattended for an extended period of time, and always ensure the fire is put out when you are finished enjoying it. To properly extinguish a fire in a wood-burning fireplace, begin by using your fireplace poker or shovel to spread out the wood and embers into a flattened mound. After the flames die out, cover the cooling wood and embers with a few scoops of ash. Once the fire is completely extinguished, you can sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the wood to ensure no embers are burning.
