If you’re a high school senior, people may already be asking what you’ll do after you graduate. Will you pursue further education? Where? How will you pay for it? All are questions that are easier to ask than answer. With all the factors to consider, finding an answer that’s a good fit for you requires research, self-reflection and, in many cases, perseverance. Did you know that prospective college students who visit at least three different campuses are more likely to enroll in college and to persist through graduation than those who visit fewer than three schools? There’s probably nothing magic about the number three, but the extra effort in exploring options makes a difference. At the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance, helping students select a school that’s a good fit for them goes

hand-in-hand with looking at how to pay for it. At workshops and outreach events for prospective college students held at schools throughout the state, LOSFA officials suggest a five-point match to identify major areas of concern to consider. Sujuan M. Williams Bouttée, LOSFA executive director, and several other LOSFA officials recently discussed some of the steps involved. While your senior year is when you’ll most likely put together your own plan for post-secondary education, middle school isn’t too early to start preparing. As early as your first algebra class, you begin building the GPA that can help or hinder your college or scholarship applications. And, you’re also learning about your own skills and interests. You may think you’re too young to compile a resumé, but LOSFA officials say gathering information about your accomplishments while you’re in high school may help you write a convincing college entrance essay for the school
of your choice. More importantly, it’s part of identifying your strengths and interests that can help guide your direction later. The Student Tuition Assistance and Revenue Trust Savings Program offers federal and state tax incentives for saving for a college education. When parents or guardians open a START account while a child is young, even a small amount set aside monthly can make a big difference when it’s time to pay tuition.
Finding a match
Here are the five matches LOSFA suggests prospective students consider: • Aptitude, Skills, Interest Match — This one begins with self-reflection. What do you enjoy doing? What do you do well? Your long-term goal is to identify potential employers who would pay you to do work you enjoy. What credentials would enable you to work in your chosen field? Southeastern Louisiana University Strong Academics
Welcome to Southeastern
Southeastern Louisiana University students experience a robust campus life and have all the benefits of a large university (third largest in Louisiana with 15,000 enrollment) with the closeness and personal attention of a smaller one (student-to-faculty ratio of 23:1). Southeastern provides students with the tools and help necessary to discover their own potential. Southeastern also represents a strong value, having been recognized as among the top 60 low-cost colleges in the nation where graduates also earn high starting salaries.
With more than 150 majors, minors and concentrations, Southeastern students have a wide selection of academic pathways that lead to challenging careers or further graduate and professional studies. All degree programs offer an honors option, and internship opportunities are incorporated into many programs providing students with real-life exposure within their chosen fields. Students save hundreds of dollars each semester on books thanks to an on-campus textbook rental system, while new housing facilities include state-of-the-art amenities.

What’s New with the Green and Blue? Everything – a new president, Mike Fitts; 1,649 new first-year students; new courses; new research; brand-new Yulman Stadium and more. “New” is the new buzzword at Tulane University. those credentials? One place to learn about current job listings, typical salaries and skills required is www.laworks.net/ Stars/default.aspx. • Academic Match — Where can you gain admission? Based on your GPA and test scores, you may assume that the school of your choice is a reach for you, but don’t be too hasty to rule it out. Gus Wales, LOSFA director of public information and communication, used his personal experience as an example. He said he assumed LSU was too much of a reach for him until he took an advanced college placement class at LSU. That resolved his doubts, and he later enrolled in LSU, now his alma mater. LOSFA officials said aiming too low can backfire. A student who chooses a program that isn’t challenging academically may find it hard to stay motivated. • Social and Emotional Match — What type of environment will work best for you? Some students find a large university academically stimulating; others may find it intimidating and prefer a small school with smaller classes. What are your thoughts and feelings about living at home or on campus? • Retention Match — Which institution has the greatest success rate with retaining students with similar attributes to you? • Cost of Choice Match — All other things being equal, which option allows you to complete your degree with the least amount of loan debt? Paying for education
Continued from page 2
The average debt load for those graduating from Louisiana colleges and universities in 2013 was more than $22,000. Lingering student-loan debt has become a national issue. The sooner you can pay off your student loans, the sooner your future earnings are available to you. Scholarships, grants and finding ways to control your costs can help you avoid borrowing more than you actually need. Student loans have to be paid back even if, for some reason, you don’t graduate. While many Louisiana students can benefit from TOPS, TOPS does not pay for every expense you’ll encounter. LOSFA officials said fees, such as those associated with college applications, orientation, dorm deposits and parking often are overlooked in planning for college costs. Make sure you understand what you’ll be required to do to keep your TOPS scholarship. Deborah F. Paul, LOSFA scholarship/grant director, recommends that high school students meet with their school counselors and also contact LOSFA to begin learning about their options to pay for college. LOSFA’s mission is to promote college access, and by “college,” that means post-secondary programs ranging from certificate programs and two-year programs as well as private and public universities. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all way to keep costs down since individual situations vary widely. Often, a successful strategy

The decision of where to pursue higher education is one of them most far-reaching decisions of a lifetime. combines financing from various sources, including scholarships and savings. Cost-saving strategies can include enrolling in advanced placement classes while in high school or living at home while attending college. Once you’ve decided what school you want to attend, Paul recommends a visit to the school’s admission and financial aid offices. When you know what course of study you want to take, look for scholarships and grants that may be specifically geared for
it. Paul suggests casting a wide net for scholarships and study grants, not all of which are based on ACT scores or GPAs. For example, some scholarships target students entering nontraditional fields such as a woman who wants to become an engineer. Other scholarships may be intended for children of parents in certain industries or members of a specific organization. Even small scholarships may help you buy textbooks. “Don’t leave money on the table,” Paul said. Research may
reveal some sources of help that you might otherwise overlook. Paul said LOSFA can help students find job-forecast information to help predict the likelihood of finding employment in their chosen courses of study. Many financial aid programs require a student to complete a FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Students can only do this their senior year, but before then, it is possible to do a practice version to help you project where you’ll stand.
