2016 DEBUTANTE COTERIE

MAKING AN

IMPACT

For today’s debs, philanthropy starts early BY VICTOR ANDREWS | vandrews@theadvocate.com Progressive, determined and caring: These terms apply to any and all of the young women included in the 2016 coterie of debutantes for the greater New Orleans area. With proven track records of philanthropy, academic achievement and career goals set on making a difference, the 61 profiled individuals bring a cosmopolitan and energetic flair to a host of futures that include the worlds of medicine, finance, communications, engineering, cinema and art. Their volunteer accomplishments have taken them to far-flung places in Latin America, Africa and Europe. Educational options will bring even more to different parts of the globe, from the Iberian peninsula to the Australian continent. On the go and on the move, they attend colleges, universities and high schools throughout the country, from New York to the Carolinas,

across the Gulf South and on to the West Coast in California and Oregon. Some will take advantage of the opportunity to expand cultural and educational vistas in academic meccas around the world, stamping their passports and making their mark in foreign climes. Determined, energetic and excited, these debs are also dedicated to giving and philanthropy, in areas ranging from social justice to the environment, education and health. In this, they follow the example of the two women from the preceding coterie, profiled on this page. In the meantime, they will be celebrated and honored for what they have done thus far in life and what they hope to accomplish in their early forays into adulthood, both individually and collectively. The women featured in this section will be

presented at one or more organizations that recognize debutantes through a seasonal fete or Carnival ball. The presenting societies include the Bachelors’ Club, Le Debut des Jeunes Filles de la Nouvelle Orleans, the Debutante Club, the Mid-Winter Cotillion, the Original Illinois Club, the Pickwick Club and the Young Men Illinois Club. Some of the debutantes are presented by their organizations during Carnival. Many of the young ladies will go on to serve in some of the courts of the area’s oldest and most storied tableaux. They will all have something in common for the next few months, no matter what the future holds: They will have made memories that will last their lifetime. Filled with purpose and philanthropy, what interesting lives they are certain to be.

Gratitude inspired former deb to give back

Education was the key to her season of service BY CATE ROOT

BY R. STEPHANIE BRUNO

Former debutante Malonda Maxine McElwee has confidence, grace and a strong aptitude in science and math. But she may stand out the most for her commitment to service. Malonda was presented by the Young Men Illinois Club last year. This spring, she graduated from Hammond High Magnet School, and in the fall, she’ll matriculate at Santa Clara University in California, where she intends to pursue a degree in engineering. But until September, Malonda will focus on helping others. She’ll spend June at the Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum, where she works at a day camp centered on science, technology, engineering and math. The four-week camp

It was just a few days before Christmas about 10 years ago when Aggie Bell (officially Agnes Robeson Bell) was overwhelmed by gratitude for all she had. Then a sixth-grader at Trinity Episcopal School, Aggie reflected on how fortunate she was to have a loving family, a beautiful home and a host of friends. As she pictured herself opening gifts on Christmas Day, a thought struck her. “I’m not really sure why, but I started thinking about all the children who did not have the privileges and comforts I had,” said Bell, a former debutante and now a senior at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee. “And I decided I wanted to do something about it.”

teaches junior high and high school students how to build computers and robotic arms, how to design circuits and how to fly a single-engine aircraft (with a certified flight instructor on board, of course). Malonda volunteered at the camp last summer, too. “My debutante experience made me realize that although I am in this Carnival club to learn these things, that people don’t always have the opportunity to learn. I want to go out and help other people learn them,” she said. Malonda’s mother, Sylvia Hurst, said her daughter’s commitment to others blossomed in high school. “One day, I was getting up in the morning, and I said, ‘Where are you going?’ She said, ‘I’m going on a breast cancer walk.’ … This is Saturday morning. She said, ‘Mom, this is what I want to do.’ “I looked up and I said, ‘ Wow, Malonda.’ I’m just impressed. Every time I was looking, she was volunteering her time.” Malonda traces her interest in service back to her childhood, when her parents lost their business in flooding after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. “My dad didn’t work for a long time,” she said. “All he did was volunteer his time.” Meanwhile, she said, others helped the family in turn, with advice, time and material assistance. “They would let us use their car,” she recalled. “Or they would feed us. I think that’s where my service originated.” Hurst encourages her daughter to maintain charitable connections, such as ministering to the poor and serving in soup kitchens, but her passion is education. “She gives back through her education, as far as talking to young girls, wanting to impact them,” Hurst said. Malonda has lofty aspirations, and she’s starting to make a plan to realize her goals. “I see myself studying abroad ... specifically studying abroad with an organization such as Engineers Without Borders,” she said. “In the long term, I see myself working at an organization like that and ... maybe starting my own and coming back into my community and trying to help the youth realize that there’s more than just what’s around here. “It took someone to come back and show me that,” she said. “To think that I could be that person for someone else!” As Malonda prepares for college, she’s grateful for the poise and confidence she acquired in her debutante season. “It was a very transformative experience,” she said. “Especially being able to see older women who also went through the experience and what they’ve accomplished in life and how they carried themselves.”

Future nurse is preparing to put the ‘care’ into ‘career’ Katherine Stafford Winsberg

• Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Jay Winsberg • Attending LSU in the fall • Graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart The qualities Miss Katherine Stafford Winsberg uses to describe herself certainly will be a benefit in her chosen career path of nursing. Katherine calls herself outgoing, caring, family-oriented, positive and a leader. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Jay Winsberg. Her mother is the former Constance Freret Hartson. Katherine most recently attended the College of Charleston but will transfer to LSU this fall. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta and is active in sailing and tennis. She also has been on the president’s list for academic excellence and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Leadership and Service. At the Academy of the Sacred Heart, she was on the Student Council’s Executive Board, was on the yearbook committee and played on the basketball team. She was a member of the National Honor Society, graduated with highest honors and received the Service Award.

She has worked in the child care and retail fields and has interned in the medical field. She also served as a counselor for Mes Amies Girls’ Day Camp and Camp Point Clear in Mentone, Alabama. As a sub-deb, Katherine reigned over Les Pierrettes and also was a page in that organization.

That thought has since led Bell to serve as an intern at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital injury prevention program, to tutor underserved Nashville middle school students after school and to found McGehee’s Relay for Life team when she was in high school. Aggie’s Christmas epiphany led her to the computer, where she found several organizations offering international sponsorships. She settled on Compassion International and the sponsorship of a girl in Uganda. “I first began the sponsorship when I was 11 or 12,” she said. “Like me, her name is Agnes, and she was 6 when we first made contact. Now she’s 16 and in school to become a hairdresser. It’s incredible to me how one individual can impact the life of another person simply by taking action.” To raise money to pay for the sponsorship, Aggie began making bracelets, each with a tiny bell attached. “I am lucky that I come from a big extended family, because I got everyone to buy one,” she said with a laugh. “I called them ‘Aggie for Agnes,’ and my mom would bring me to Michael’s to buy everything I needed to be able to make them.” Bell earned enough money making and selling the bracelets to sponsor Agnes and thereby pay for her education. The two still keep in touch. Knowing their daughter’s nature, parents Michael Bell and Aimée Favrot Bell were only slightly surprised when she told them she planned to sponsor a child. “They were incredibly thrilled and have supported my efforts wholeheartedly ever since,” she said. She credits them with instilling in her the spirit of gratitude that led her to want to help others and also with leading by example in their philanthropic pursuits. Given that philanthropic bent, it seems almost inevitable that Aggie Bell would devise a plan to help others when she reigned as queen of Mithras earlier this year. “The tradition is for the queen to come up with a design or idea for a pin that she would give to special people in her life,” she explained. “I thought and thought about it and decided not to do a pin at all but to do something I think is more meaningful and more permanent. I made a donation to the Louisiana Children’s Museum Early Learning Village in the name of each friend. I know that, in the past, I thought it was amazing when I learned that someone had donated in my name — I was so honored.” This deb season, Aggie’s parents took a page out of their daughter’s book when choosing gifts for her coterie of debutante friends early in the season. “This year, they decided to make a donation to the Pro Bono Publico Foundation in the name of each one, instead of buying them a gift,” she said, referring to the Rex foundation that supports public education in New Orleans. “It’s such a natural way to give back. I would be thrilled if it inspires others to do the same.”
