Panel recommends rezoning request BY ELLYN COUVILLION

ecouvillion@theadvocate.com GONZALES — The Gonzales Planning and Zoning Commission is recommending the city give the thumbs-up to a rezoning request for a downtown business expansion, as well as approve the site plan for a subdivision in Edenborne — contingent, however, on necessary water and traffic infrastructure being completed first. Brian Marchand, owner of Marchand’s Interior and Hardware, spoke to the commission at its meeting Monday about plans to expand the familyowned store by more than 8,000

square feet. The store opened in 1949 on North Alexander Avenue in the oldest part of Gonzales. “I’m hoping the finished project looks like one entity” that retains the residential look of the original store, Marchand said. “I think the project would improve not only our property, but the city block,” he said. Marchand said the project would tie in well with the city’s new master plan that calls for a renewed downtown area. “We’re interested in downtown and I feel this would be a small step, a positive step to revitalize downtown,” he said.

The existing Marchand’s store is zoned commercial retail, and Marchand is asking that adjacent property owned by the company be rezoned from business to retail commercial, as well, for the expansion. The Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend the rezoning to the City Council, which meets next on Jan. 14. The commission also heard from Deric Murphy, president of Quality Engineering and Surveying, who spoke on behalf of Level Homes of Baton Rouge. The company hopes to build a 350-home subdivision in the

Edenborne development off La. 44 south of Interstate 10. The city has been waiting on a number of infrastructure items from the developers of Edenborne, including construction of a four-lane boulevard through the community as well as water line work. On Monday, City Engineer Jackie Baumann told the Planning Commission that the attorney for the city and the attorney for the development have agreed that, if site plans for the subdivision are approved by the City Council, the developers will complete the necessary infrastructure before any construction permits are issued.

Edenborne is home to River Parishes Community College. On Monday, Chancellor Dale Doty urged the commissioners to approve the subdivision. “I am completely in favor of what they’re proposing to do here,” Doty said, particularly in light of the agreement over needed infrastructure in the development. “If those things are going to be done, this is going to be a very beneficial project,” he said of the subdivision. The Planning Commission voted to recommend the council approve the site plan, contingent on the infrastructure requirements being completed.

Matassa takes helm as parish’s 4th president Advocate staff report Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa promised Monday to bring transparency, unified government and “servant leadership” as chief executive of the fast-growing parish. With wife, Selma, and their family, along with former Gov. Edwin Edwards, U.S. Rep. Garret Graves, R-Baton Rouge, and a host of Ascension’s political elite watching in a packed Parish Courthouse in Donaldsonville, Matassa took the oath of office from state District Judge Tess Percy Stromberg. The 11 members of the Parish Council, including three new members — Bill Dawson, Aaron Lawler and John Cagnolatti — also were sworn in Monday, by Ascension Parish Court Judge Marilyn Lambert. Matassa, a five-term Gonzales City Council member who stepped down from that post Monday, defeated Gonzales surveyor Clint Cointment by 117 votes in the Nov. 21 runoff to replace four-term parish President Tommy Martinez. Matassa also was the top vote-getter of a five-man field in the Oct. 24 primary race. Matassa is only the fourth person to be elected parish president in Ascension. Martinez served as parish president from 1992-96, 1996-2000, 2008-12 and 2012-16, the first three terms as a Democrat and the fourth as “other party.” Ronnie Hughes served as a Republican parish president from 200408, and Harold Marchand was elected parish president as a Democrat, serving from 2000-04.

DONALDSONVILLE — At its first meeting of the new year, there were changes of the guard on both the Ascension Parish school district’s board and administration. Patricia “Pat” Russo was elected president of the board, after she got a nomination and a second from board members Troy Gautreau and Shawn Sevario, respectively. No other nominations were made. “We will continue to work as a team, along with Ms. Pujol and her staff,” said Russo, referring to schools Superintendent Patrice Pujol. Russo, in her 18th year as a School Board member, represents District 7B, which includes parts of Gonzales and the Dutchtown community. Following protocol, outgoing board President Lorraine Wimberly and Russo traded places at Tuesday’s meeting, and Russo presided over the remainder of the meeting. Taft Kleinpeter, who represents District 5B, which includes the Galvez and Prairieville areas, will serve as vice president of the board for the second consecutive year, being the only nominee for the office. He was nominated by Shawn Sevario, and the nomination got a second from Louis Lambert. It was announced Tuesday that David Alexander, the school system’s director of secondary education, is retiring to take the position of director of education and training at Pelican Chapter Associated Builders and Contractors in Baton Rouge. Pujol commended him for his 20 years in education in Ascension Parish and noted that Alexander had been instrumental in creating a partnership between the school district and the Pelican Chapter ABC to train high school students in industrial crafts. The new director of secondary education is Lisa Bacala, who has served as supervisor of secondary education for 10 years. “It’s an amazing opportunity to do what I love,” Bacala said of the new appointment.

Recycling Road Show canceled due to lack of participation Advocate staff report Ascension Parish government officials have canceled its Recycling Road Show program due to a lack of participation. However, officials announced Monday that the parish’s Recycling Center drop-off location at the Department of Public Works will continue operation. The Recycling Road Show be-

gan at the Prairieville Wal-Mart as a monthly drop-off location for household recyclable materials about five years ago, said Don Hysell, parish environmental manager. Hysell said residents brought their recyclables on the first Saturday of each month. “We were collecting four to five tons of recyclables once a month, but that slowly dwindled down so we changed the pick-

up schedule to once every other month,” Hysell said. “With all of the recycling services now being offered by private contractors, our numbers have been less than a ton every other month.” Hysell said the parish will continue the Recycling Center dropoff location at the Department of Public Works, 42077 Churchpoint Road, Gonzales. The Recycling Center is located just west

of DPW’s main building. The center is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The center accepts cardboard boxes, newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paperback books. For more information about the Department of Public Works Recycling Center, call Hysell at (225) 450-1308.

It survives because it is planted on the south side of the house shielded from the north wind, and the roots grow under the house where they are protected from hard freezes.

The meeting took place in front of Ascension Baptist Church, she said. The man told Smith he wanted to remain anonymous but he felt it was important, in light of recent events surrounding law enforcement officers, to thank area lawmen for their service. The man wanted Sheriff Jeff Wiley and the APSO family to know that he prays for the officers daily, she said. He presented Smith with a hand-crafted cross. While Smith was still in his presence, he asked if he could pray for him and the entire department, and the two men prayed together, she said. “This wonderful addition to our family will be hung at our substation on Airline Highway, where deputies frequent on a daily basis in between calls for This hand-crafted cross was presented to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office. service, Hudson said.

A bench for buddies

Lake Elementary School in St. Amant now has a ‘buddy bench.’ When a student is lonely or upset at recess, he or she sits on the buddy bench. All other students are trained to know that when they see someone on the bench, it means that they need a buddy. Sitting on the bench are Collin Templet, left, and Cooper Templet, whose grandfather, Larry Templet, donated time and materials and built the bench. ments into positive, Cooper recited an “eraser poem, which is the recreating of a new poem from already written words and comments. By eliminating many of the hurtful words, she created a motivational piece to encourage students to have pride in their own appearances. Recent Dutchtown graduate and former slam poet, Chole Bourgeois, attests to the benefits that the writing program has offered her. “It is absolutely wonderful for students to build confidence, meet new people and break out of their shell, she said. Students joining the Spoken Word Club are given the opportunity to improve their writing skills by participating in workshops, organizers said. “Empson tries everything in her power to make sure we have the tools we need to become better writers, better poets, Bourgeois said. Senior Ameris Wilson, the host of the evening and member of the poetry club, believes in the strength of the program and is proud to be involved in something that can continue to thrive at the school. “Slam poetry has really opened me up, and I think it can help those that are more introverted, like myself, reach out and become a part of something, Wilson said. Students interested in joining the program can visit Forward Arts of Baton Rouge’s website at forwardarts.org. Poets may get the chance to compete at All-City, a regional competition held in Baton Rouge composed of poets from local high schools. Individual winners at All-City will progress to compete on HBO’s yearly special Brave New Voices, that features youth poets from across the country.

Poetry was the point of a recent poetry slam event at Dutchtown High School. The Dec. 11 event was facilitated by the school’s Spoken Word Club, created by English teacher Tamara Fuchs Empson and sponsored by the Forward Arts program and The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. Slam poetry is a form of competitive performance poetry where people read aloud poems without props, costumes or music. After performing, they receive scores between zero and 10 from randomly selected judges. The highest and lowest numbers are thrown out, which provides the poet with a possible score of 0-30 points. Those immersed in the poetry scene often encourage each other to remember that “the points are not the point, poetry is the pointâ€? and to “applaud the poet, not the points.â€? Several students performed with either memorized poems or poems read aloud from phones, most of which depicted current events or their own personal stories. Christina Robertson won with 29.6 points. Area poetry events often features workshops and special performances by local and nationally recognized competitive slam poets, such as Donney Rose and Chancellor “Xeroâ€? Skidmore who has represented Baton Rouge at the National Poetry Slam from 2000 to 2010. Beth Cooper was the featured poet for the Dutchtown slam. Cooper has performed at Women of the World in New York and Southern Fried Poetry, which is held in Atlanta. Cooper’s writings focus on body positivity, feminism and self-worth. ä ON THE INTERNET: Turning the negative com- www.forwardarts.org

After re-evaluating his choices, Donaldsonville Tigers’ star wide receiver Stephen Sullivan made a commitment to play for another Tiger team — the LSU Tigers. Sullivan declared his choice Dec. 26 during a news conference at the school that was attended by family, friends, coaches and teammates. LSU got its Christmas present a day late. A four-star recruit, the 6-foot-6, 230-pound Sullivan is listed as Louisiana’s No. 8 player in the Class of 2016 by 247 Sports. He is ranked 17th nationally among wide receivers and 101st overall. His decision was based on how it affected his family and where he’d ASCENSION fit in as a player, he said. ATHLETICS He hopes to join a very LYLE JOHNSON large stable of premier wide receivers from the past as well as present gridiron greats. Sullivan’s choice was not an easy one as he committed to LSU before his junior season. He pulled his commitment from the Tigers early last fall and relegated his final list to LSU, TCU and Mississippi State. Sullivan ended the 2015-2016 season catching 57 passes for 1,158 yards (20.3 per catch) and 10 touchdowns for the Class 3A Donaldsonville Tigers.

of the Bulldogs was selected as coach of the year. Capello’s Lady Bulldogs girls’ team hit on all cylinders again in 2015. Ascension Catholic won its second Class 1A state title in three seasons. The team had three runners in the top seven positions. The Dutchtown Griffins placed two runners on the All-Metro team. Teammate senior Ben Vasterling led the Griffins by placing fourth at Metro in 16:01.28 and 32nd in Class 5A in 17:32.01. Two families of deer making good use of the corn the feeder put on the ground.

A personal treat for me My passion for the outdoors is no secret, but this past Saturday, I was blessed with a very personal treat that included an invitation to deer hunt on a friend’s property in Angie near the Mississippi line. This invitation was actually made to my wife, Deborah, and it included me as well. We headed up La. 21 from Covington for the twohour ride to the 530-acre piece of property. This was our first time to this part of our state and the ride was enjoyable, to say the least. We were guests of Rick and Jeanine Kogler. They gave us a grand tour of the place and fed us lunch before we headed out to the stand for an afternoon hunt. The weather was pretty much perfect. Not too cold to be uncomfortable, sort of like the little bears’ porridge — just right. The box stand was near a feeder so our anticipation was high in our expectation

of seeing some deer and hopefully to get a shot. After about five minutes on the stand, a doe with her nearly grown yearling came out and began to nibble on the corn already on the ground. That activity went on for the next 2½ hours as we ended up seeing about 15 deer. Three were bucks but none of them were shooters, so we never got a shot. There were lots of really cool things about this trip, but the best part was the time in the stand with my wife. She has a love for the outdoors, and we got to spend some quality time in conversation as well as the excitement when another deer came out. This will be a hunting trip that I will never forget and hopefully repeat many times in the future. Lyle Johnson covers sports for The Ascension Advocate. DONALDSONVILLE — A group of local high school students officially began the second year of a reborn program that involves local youth in government. Returning and new members of the 2015-16 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council took their oaths of office during the Aug. 11 City Council meeting. MYAC’s mission is to serve as advocates for local youth to city government, addressing issues that affect local youth while also offering a chance to learn volunteer, leadership and civic skills. “MYAC’s motto is ‘Young People Leading the Way to

a Better Tomorrow,’ ” said Tamiko Garrison, volunteer coordinator of the group. Garrison said the group was originally created in 1996, under then-Mayor Bernard J. Francis Sr., Garrison’s father. However, the group remained dormant until 2014, when current Mayor Leroy Sullivan Sr. and Garrison revived and restructured the program. MYAC’s makeup was increased from last year’s eight positions to 16 seats, eight sophomore or junior students each from Ascension Catholic High School and DonaldsonPhoto provided by TAMIKO GARR RISON ville High School, Garrison The Donaldsonville Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council includes, first row said, with each school allowed man, Jimmia Williams, from left, Jalon ChatC Kaitlyn Williams, Tamiko Stroud, Paige Joseph, Maerys Joseph and Lawrence Brown III; and second row, Whitney Eure, Catherine Eure, Kerrionne Brown, Da äSee YOUTH COUNCIL, page 3G Honora, Victoria arell Eure, Nina Smith and Whitney Baker.
