For a group of Bains Lower Elementary students, gifts arrived last week thanks to a grant from Entergy’s Riverbend Station in St. Francisville. The 25 students are part of the Reader Leader program, which is designed to help first graders improve their reading skills by pairing them with adult volunteers. Stephanie Ferguson conceived the program five years ago to promote early childhood literacy by partnering community volunteers with students to provide reading support. It has grown to 30 volunteers who work with 25 children. Teachers recommend students from the seven first-grade classes, and each volunteer sets aside 30 minutes every week to work oneon-one. They develop important skills such as decoding, sight word recognition and vocabulary development. They also share the joy of reading for pleasure. As a reward for participating in the program, Entergy provided a $400 grant to purchase 100 reading-level books, which were presented to the students Dec. 17. Grant approved for Jacock Road Bridge Mounted Posse is thanked for service
Advocate staff report
West Feliciana Parish President Kevin Couhig has announced that the funding to replace the Jacock Road Bridge has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The bridge crosses Barrow Creek on Jacock Road, about a quarter-mile east of Bains Road in St. Francisville. The bridge has been inundated with high water several times in the past, stranding more than 60 residents each time, Couhig said. The parish administration submitted the application to FEMA earlier this year, in hopes of receiving the specific funds made available through the Federal Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security is officially designated by FEMA to administer the program. The existing bridge will be replaced by a raised concrete

Tigers improve as season progresses East Feliciana basketball coach Adrian Dunn enjoyed watching the run of the Tigers football team through the regular season and to the quarterfinals of the Class 2A playoffs. But now he’s enjoying watching several of the football players running for his basketball team. Five players from the football team joined his basketball squad and have made an immediate impression. The players — Truman Seymore, Treylan Dunn, Marvel Jackson, Cedric Anderson and TreDarius Carr — provide the core of his squad. All five were key contributors to the Tigers on the gridiron. “The addition of the football players has made a huge impact because of the scoring, rebounding and leadership,

Dunn said. “All of them have made a tremendous impact because they’re my core group of returning players. East Feliciana is 5-5 on the season and there have been a number of bright spots to give Dunn encouragement as the meat of the nondistrict schedule plays out. The team finished fourth in the 11-team bracket of the Madison Prep Classic, an extremely competi-
tive tournament. The Tigers also have victories over two Class 4A teams, Woodlawn and Lake Area New Tech, as well as Jennings, of Class 3A. Leading the way are starters Anderson (14 points per game, 8 rebounds per game), Carr (15 points per game, 12 rebounds per game), Marvel Jackson (10 points, 4 rebounds), Maleek Chriss (9 points, 7 assists) and DeMarco Branch (8 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists per game). Key contributors off the bench are James Major, Treylan Dunn and Seymore. “The three most surprising things about this team are first, the play of sophomore point guard Maleek Chriss, coach Dunn said. “He has come in as a first-year player and

dominated. Secondly, our rebounding has been phenomenal despite being somewhat undersized in most games. Third, the way we’re shooting the basketball from the three-point line. Still, Dunn said there are some areas that need improvement. After the Christmas holidays, the Tigers are scheduled to host three straight tune-ups to get them ready for District 7-2A. They’ll host West Feliciana at 5 p.m. Tuesday, St. Michael at 6 p.m. Jan. 6 and Zachary at 5 p.m. Jan. 12. “Right now, we really need to get better with our half-court defense, ball-handling and transition defense for us to reach a high level of consistency, he said. The Tigers begin 7-2A play on Jan. 15 at Mentorship Academy. Dunn said he expects
Madison Prep, which is in its first season in the league, to be the team to beat, based on early season results. Last year, East Feliciana was seeded 25th in the Class 2A state championship tournament and lost in the first round. This season is too young for him to make a judgment about how far his squad will make it in the state tournament. Improvement and consistency are the key. “Each game, we are getting better as a team, and this year, we challenge ourselves to make a deep playoff run, Dunn said. Jackson earns 5 star cadet as Youth Challenge graduate Advocate staff report The Louisiana National Guard Youth Challenge Program graduated 221 cadets during a ceremony at the Alexandria Riverfront Center in Pineville on Dec. 12, with state Rep. Mickey J. Guillory, District 41, delivering the commencement address. The commencement ceremony was historic in that the Louisiana National Guard celebrated it’s 20,000th graduate of the program. The Youth Challenge Program in Louisiana was established in 1993, following congressional approval for a
pilot program to address and improve the high school dropout crisis, according to a news release. Camp BeauJackson regard YCP was established as one of 10 pilot programs nationwide and was successful, with the Louisiana National Guard being recognized for its ability to train, lead and mentor youth. In 1999, the Gillis W. Long Center became the second YCP program, and Camp Minden was established as the
state’s third in 2001. The program instills selfdiscipline, life skills and values in 16- to 18-year-olds and assists students with improving their grades and working toward earning their GED. Annually, about 1,400 teens graduate from the program. Twelve cadets, including Nelwyn Jackson, of Jackson, were awarded the rank of 5 star — the highest a cadet can achieve — for excelling in all aspects of the program. Besides Jackson, graduating cadets from the region include: Antonio Allen, of Baker; Warren Arndt, of Zachary; and Ty’Rell Guy, of Zachary.
A new service club has formed at East Feliciana High School, with student members already proving they want to serve their communities. The Youth Volunteer Corps has 20 student members, and prior to Thanksgiving, the teens collected canned goods for the Helping in His Name Food Pantry in Jackson. The group collected 421 pounds of food, then sorted and packed the canned goods and nonperishable food items into holiday food boxes to give to clients — hungry families in the Jackson area — for Christmas. Sponsors of the Youth Volunteer Corps are three secondyear teachers from Teach for America — Sarah Hayes and Kristen Smith, both from Illinois, and Anne Marie Martin, from South Carolina. Smith arranged for the club, along with members of the Student Government Association at EFHS, to work at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank on Nov. 30. “The students were excited to discover they could work and have fun at the same time, all while helping others, Smith said. The club toured the GBR Food Bank’s warehouse and

Smith said as sponsors of the club, she and the other teachers are looking forward to fully implementing Principal Curt Greene’s vision of creating more learning opportunities for students by encouraging them to be active and engaged citizens who are aware of issues impacting their own communities.
