Several homeowners who live in part of Lake Joilet Vue subdivision, on Adams Lane and the East Baton Rouge side of Highland Meadows neighborhood off La. 968 attended an informational meeting about fire ratings Nov. 18 at the Zachary Fire Department. According to Zachary Fire Chief Danny Kimble, those three areas are located in Fire District 1 and more than seven miles from the nearest fire station. As a result, the fire rating is a class 10. The Property Insurance Association of Louisiana grades municipal areas in terms of fire protection capabilities for the purpose of fair insurance ratings of

graded areas, and PIAL ratings directly affect insurance premiums for residents. “The better the rating, the less you pay,â€? Kimble said. A class 1 is the best rating, while a class 10 is the worst. Kimble said the Zachary Fire Department has implemented a plan to place a fire truck at the city-owned property at the intersection of Brian Road and La. 964 which should reduce homeowners’ insurance premiums. “Yes, it is an unmanned truck, but it should help,â€? said Kimble. “We’ve gotten numerous calls about this, but putting a truck there should help you out tremendously.â€? äSee MEETING, page 5G

Continued from page 1G Kimble said the plan will help reduce the fire rating to a class 4 and suggested the homeowners begin calling their insurance companies in January. An agreement between Fire District 1 and the city of Zachary is being negotiated and is due to be signed Dec. 1, he said. Residents who live in the same areas but are within the seven-mile fire clause, presently have a class 4 rating. Homeowner Mark Powell said initially, when he first bought property in the area, he was told his property was about a quarter mile beyond the seven-mile boundary and the class 10 rating would affect his homeowner’s insurance drastically. “After further checking, the property was actually within the seven miles, and we ended up with the lower fire rating. It’s a difference of about $6,000 annually, Powell said. Currently, the nearest dedicated fire station to the Lake Joilet Vue, Adams Lane and Highland Meadows areas is the Zachary station on Flanacher Road, which is manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Kimble said. Several other residents at the meeting said they were pleased with the plan.

Zachary Broncos hosting Hahnville Second-seeded Zachary is the highest seeded team remaining in the Class 5A football playoffs and faces the task of stopping seventh-seeded Hahnville Friday in Bronco Stadium. The game will feature two of the state’s marquee players, Zachary’s Lindsey Scott Jr. and Hahnville’s Anthony Williams, and both teams enter the game with a lot of momentum. Zachary improved to 11-1 and is riding the crest of an eight-game winning streak that includes playoff victories over Sulphur (54-32) and Dutchtown (35-14) last week. Against the Griffins, Scott rushed for four touchdowns, and Terry Sullivan added another as the Broncos jumped out to a 28-0 lead early in the third quarter. For the game, Scott rushed for 176 yards and completed 11 of 16 passes for 122 yards. A week earlier against Sulphur, he had 253 passing yards. “He’s a leader by his actions,” coach David Brewerton said after the game. “He plays with guts and passion every week and our team feeds off that. I’m very proud of him.” The defense was equally as effective as Dutchtown managed just 34 rushing yards and 230 total yards. The Griffins had just 29 yards at halftime and didn’t score until the outcome was pretty much decided. “I’m proud of the defense,” Brewerton said. “They really played well.” The defense will have to come up with a game plan to contain Hahnville’s Williams. In two playoff games, he’s amassed 700 yards. In last week’s victory over St. Amant, Williams rushed for 200 yards, had more than 100 yards receiving and added a 77-yard kickoff return. Quarterback Mike Neal is an effective offensive weapon, too, as he completed six of 13 passes for 106 yards and three touchdowns in the win over the Gators. After beginning the season 2-4, Hahnville has rolled off seven straight wins including playoff victories over Alexandria (49-12) and St. Amant (55-33).

Northeast had only seven first downs and managed a second-quarter touchdown on a 53-yard run by Ra’mon Parker. Marqueon Minor hit Leroy

Roddy with the two-point conversion pass. Coach Dave Masterson’s Vikings, which advanced to the semifinals a year ago, finished the season at 7-5 including a first-round triumph over DeQuincy in the playoffs.

Two Zachary High School students have been recognized as October’s and November’s Athletes of the Month. Representing the sport of football is senior Keenan Tate, 17, who plays outside linebacker and special teams on the Broncos’ squad. Tate, an honor student, also is on the ZHS wrestling team. “Keenan is having a great season. He has paid his dues as a program player and is now a starter on defense,” coach David Brewerton said. “He embodies what we want our program to stand for — young men and women with high moral character who compete at an exemplary level on the field as well as in the classroom.” Tate, who maintains a 3.0 grade-point average, said he’d like to attend Southern University upon gradua-

tion to study nursing. He is the son of Kenneth and Lillian Tate, of Zachary. Representing swimming, is junior Collin Dupuy, 17, an honor student with a 3.9 GPA. Dupuy competed in two individual events at the state swim meet recently and was part of the LHSAA swim meet in Sulphur Nov. 21. He competed in the 200-yard individual medley, 100yard freestyle, 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. “Collin has really worked hard this year, and it’s paying off for him right now,” coach Lisa McGehee said. “He is a great swimmer and an even better person. He is a leader both in and out of the pool, and I’m Advocate staff photo by STACY GILL honored to be his coach.” Dupuy said he’ll be attending Louisiana Tech in Rus- Zachary High School’s Athletes of the Month for October and November are Collin ton and studying biology. A LESSON IN GIVING

Advocate staff report

Denise Brown’s kindergarten class at Northwestern Elementary School recently learned about giving, sharing, the difference between a need and a want and the story of the first Thanksgiving, involving the Pilgrims and the Indians. After their lesson, the students designed Thanksgivingthemed placemats for the families who are fed weekly at the Zachary Food Pantry. “We thought this was a great way to make the lesson more concrete, more hands-on, Brown said. On Nov. 20, Principal Martha Davis, Brown and her students hand-delivered their placemats to Food Pantry Executive Director Reggie Dykes, who distributed the mats to food pantry clients on Nov. 24.

The three are on local track teams and competed in the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics over the summer in Jacksonville, Florida. “It’s not just what they learn in that classroom; it’s how they learn to compete, whether it be in a field, a court, in the band or in the choir, Superintendent Scott Devillier said. At the Junior Olympics, Burrell won the pentathlon in his division, finishing third in the 400-meter run and seventh in the 800; Tate placed 10th in the long jump; and Beard placed 12th out of 54 junior high athletes in the hurdles.
