Prepare yourself now for new challenges ahead BY RACHELE SMITH

“Think of this like a camping trip and you certainly don‘t want to rough it. You want to prepare for things that you know will happen, and also for possible obstacles along the way,” she advises. For Vyas, preparation starts before the semester begins. “You, the student, must set a routine or rhythm from the very beginning, even pre-semester,” she says. Vyas recommends students review their course schedule and know where every building is located. “This will take a little of the anxiety out of wandering around unfamiliar territory,” she says. She also advises students to understand how their university calculates grade point average (GPA) and to be very familiar with their major and its requirements by reading the university’s online general/ academic catalog. If any course syllabi are available before the first day

try-level courses are not always enough to spark interest. If there are particular fields of study that interest you, find extracurricular clubs that are associated with those majors. Attend special events and bring any questions you might have about the course of study they are associated with. • SPEAK TO UPPERCLASSMEN. Underclassmen may make up the majority of students in entry-level courses, but you may encounter some upperclassmen who have already chosen their majors in such classes from time to time. Such students can be valuable resources for other students looking to gain greater insight into courses of study. Ask about

particular classes and professors who upperclassmen found particularly engaging and encouraging. • PURSUE AN INTERNSHIP. The hands-on experience provided by an internship is a great way for students to learn if a particular line of work is for them. Internships can provide an insider’s look into particular professions and industries. While internships might once have been designated for older students, many businesses now have more relaxed eligibility requirements regarding their internship programs, making it possible for students of all grade levels to gain some practical professional experience while still in school.

Above all, Vyas recommends that students practice self-care, making sure to eat right, exercise, and “above all, sleep properly.

She adds that an agenda or a to-do list can be helpful as well as many apps that are geared toward managing activities, school, and family demands. “Additionally, it’s really important, according to my students, to communicate effectively to your loved ones. It could be helpful and considerate to let them know that you might not be available to FaceTime every single day because of the demands of your school work. In addition to going to class, Vyas also recommends that new students find an ally or allies on campus to help them achieve academically once classes start. “Befriend some upperclassmen, lean on your older sibling, cousin, or connect with an organization or staff member. These people are crucial in helping you through the unfamiliar territory that is college, she says. She also recommends that students introduce themselves to their instructors, even if this can be intimidating, and stay positive, knowing that whatever setbacks they may face, there are plenty of resources on campus to help. “I see students all the time wallowing and suffering and never ever utilizing the resources that they are already

For parents For parents wanting to help their now young adults achieve as they head off to college, Vyas advises them to find that “sweet spot between over-involvement and total absence. She admits that it can be difficult, but parents should always provide a listening ear, encouragement and advice while allowing their student room to grow their own accountability and personal responsibility. She notes that it can be crippling for students if parents do not give them the room to fall and get back up, just like when they were toddlers. “I have worked with seniors whose parents still schedule their courses for them, buy their books, edit their papers, and check their grades. While I know this is only meant to be helpful, unfortunately the student never actually learns how the world really works, and when it comes to finding a job and keeping their own household, it becomes apparent, she says.
