FSU Alum Returns from Broadway for “Succeed” By Andrew Francis The FSU School of Theatre has long enjoyed a legacy of success, both in its productions and in the careers of its graduates. And that success may be becoming cyclical. This semester it has offered a unique opportunity to the students working on FSU’s fall production of the musical How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. That’s because the production will feature both the acting and choreographing talents of Kevin Covert, an alumni of both FSU’s School of Theatre (’92 BFA, Music Theatre) and the 2011 Broadway revival of the selfsame play. Yes, Broadway. And not only has Mr. Covert brought his own personal knowledge and experience to Tallahassee, he’s also incorporated elements of the Broadway revival into FSU’s production, including, with the permission of Broadway choreographer Rob Ashford, some of the exact dance moves produced by the world’s most recognized choreographers and performers. To say that they are pleased over at the School of Theatre would be to understate things, a concept that is completely at odds with anything related to this fun, vibrant, rocking show. “It’s a great big musical,” said Covert,

settling on one word in particular: “Fun.” He nodded, eyes almost maniacally wide. “Fun.” This great big musical has gotten a great big boost from Covert, who will also be playing the role of “J.B. Biggley” in the corporate satire. The School of Theatre is flexing its muscle a bit, getting such key contributions from a seasoned Broadway vet. It’s an opportunity many other schools might not have the chance to provide their students. “I didn’t have to think about it when they asked me,” said Covert. “I didn’t say ‘Let me get back to you’. I said ‘yes’.” Covert said that he relished the chance to return to FSU. Some of his fellow Seminoles in New York, he says, were jealous. “They were like, ‘You suck! You get to go back’!” The fact that there were Seminoles in the New York theater scene to say these things is a testament to the School of Theatre’s success at preparing its students for the famously unforgiving theater industry. Covert was only one of many Seminoles who found success on Broadway. He appeared in Memphis with fellow FSU alum Montego Glover ( ’96 BFA, Music Theatre); for her performance, Glover won the Drama Desk award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and was nominated for the Tony

Nathan Jentink (Finch), Kevin Covert (J.B. Biggley), and Jennifer Maurer (Rosemary) award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress. Not many schools can claim such theater luminaries amongst their alumnus, and, according to Covert, virtually no schools can claim to have professional theater alums who share the level of camaraderie and support that Broadway Seminoles do. “Florida State has a sense of family in New York [theater] unlike any school I can think of,” said Covert. “We go to showcases and support [each other], encourage them to reach out to our agents… We all know what we went through. We all went through these trenches.” That community is yet another benefit that Florida State theatre graduates can look forward to if they decide to pursue their theater dreams to the biggest stages on Earth. For now, though, they would be best served by taking advantage of Covert’s presence and participation on a show that is aiming to bring an authentic slice of Broadway right here to Tallahassee. “He’s really a great resource,” said Ariel Backer, an intern with the School of Theatre.

“Since I’ve been here, we’ve never had this opportunity, to welcome somebody back and have them in a show,” explained David Valdez, pursuing his Master’s of Fine Art in Theatre Management. The students, for their part, have been making the most of Covert’s teachings. “The students are so hardworking, so dedicated,” said Covert. “They really want to get it right and they ask a lot of questions.” And the production itself? “At the end of the day, you want to be proud of what you worked on,” said Covert. “I couldn’t be more proud, especially of the students.” “It’s interesting,” he added, “to see the students go through what I used to go through…It’s nice to see the same sense of dedication to what this school is producing.” If those students are lucky, that won’t be the only similarity they one day share with this successful Broadway performer. In a sense, however, they already have a bit of luck on their side. They’re theatre students at Florida State.

Theater Preview: Next To Normal

By Spencer Frankeberger Theatre A La Carte, an award-winning North Florida musical theatre company that started back in 1990, is proud to present the North Florida premiere of the Pulitzer prize-winning musical, Next to Normal, in November. Next to Normal revolves around a mother who deals with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that the disorder has on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life, thus continuing to expand the scope of subject matter for musicals. The original production opened on Broadway in April 2009 where it ran for 733 performances and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, winning 3. Theatre A La Carte’s version features a stellar cast, some of whom have worked with Theatre A La Carte before in previous seasons, including Xanadu, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Ragtime (which sold out every performance, including an added show), and A Little Night Music, all directed by Eric Hurst, the Artistic Director of Theatre a La Carte. Theatre A La Carte began in 1990 with

one show per season and then expanded to two shows per season just one year later. The company has received several grants throughout its existence as well as numerous awards, including First Place in the Florida Community Theatre Festival (2008) and First Place in the Southeastern Theatre Conference Community Festival (2009), both for the production of Nine. Tickets can be purchased for this season of shows, and performances for this production run November 9, 10, 16, and 17 at 8:00 P.M. and November 11 and 18 at 2:00 P.M. at Tallahassee Little Theatre on the corner of Thomasville and Betton Road (outer Midtown). Seating is reserved, and tickets are $18.00 for adults and $16.00 for students and seniors, though group discounts are available.

For tickets or additional information, call 850-224-8474 or visit www.theatrealacarte.org beginning November 2. Note: Next to Normal contains adult language and subject matter.

We publish every other Friday and are free to readers and distributors, supported solely by our advertisers -- many of whom are small, local businesses. Our goal is to bring all of Tallahassee together in one place. You can learn more about our mission and history online at TallyVillager.com

We’re back from Bermuda (that’s the name we gave to our trusty couch), and we’ve got a powerful new update to our mission and a fresh bounce in our step. For those of you who may not follow Villager as closely as others (and you easily can by signing up for our email updates at TallyVillager.com), as we were in production for our August 3 issue, several of our large local advertisers contacted us, each saying the same two things: their business had fallen way off in July, and they needed to hold their advertising until the Fall. This can be difficult news for a budding new independent paper that relies solely on advertising revenues from local small businesses. So we spent the next couple of days calling other people we know, and heard the same things several times over. So, we were the unexpected winners of a several-week stay-cation. After a short respite, we spent the time off trying to get un-dug from a backlog of emails and to-do’s that we hadn’t been able to get around to, and stepped back to brainstorm the next six months and the next two years. Then, we saw some sad news… Crystal Connection, a cornerstone of many local alternative communities for 25+ years, was closing its doors – yet another legacy local business that had struggled and ultimately lost its battle against the “Chain Addiction” that seems to have gripped Tallahassee over the years. To us, this was a terrible loss, as much for the store itself as for what the store said about Tallahassee’s local culture. In addition to its existence as a retail specialty and alternative gift store, Crystal Connection also served as a single point of contact – a hub in the wheel, if you will – for so many local communities that can sometimes be hard to define. (For me personally, it was one of the first stores I visited when I got to Tallahassee, and I sought it out knowing that such a place would give me a glimpse

/ CapitalCityVillager/ Oct 19, 2012/ vol. 1 iss. 12/ SHOP LOCAL! PLAY LOCAL! LIVE LOCAL!

into what existed here in the form of not-so-mainstream culture.) As with several closings over the past year, we found out about the impending closure too late to help turn the tide, but the concept of a well-organized Cash Mob is one that we had hoped to bring to Tallahassee for some time. And while we wouldn’t be able to help save Crystal Connection, we could help the owners – Stan and Sunshine – liquidate their stock and go out with a bang. So we did. And we believed – correctly – that many local residents would want to come show their support and thanks one last time, and grab up some early holiday gifts. (Not surprisingly for those who know them, Stan and Sunshine wanted to use the occasion to help out the community, and they offered discounts to anyone who brought a canned good for Second Harvest, which yielded an entire table of stacked goods. And I would also like to point out that the store is now in the last stages of closing, but still has lots of great discounted merchandise.) But with the news of Crystal Connection’s closing, and probably all the available brainstorming time as well, a perfectly obvious light bulb went off that has led us to our new mission: local businesses define the local culture as much as community and artistic organizations, if not more in some cases. And Tallahassee’s local business culture has been suffering in recent years. And thus, Villager is now the Shop Local newspaper for Tallahassee, using our voice to advocate for greater support of local business, and highlighting all of the great business culture that all too many (even longtime) residents are missing. This is in addition to our already strong (and always growing) coverage of local arts and culture, of course. And you will see some changes immediately – including special sections for the Midtown and All Saints Districts, and more

...local businesses define the local culture as much as community and artistic organizations, if not more in some cases. And our local business culture has been suffering in recent years. coming soon. (Villager is also working with Midtown and other districts to develop visitor walking maps and interactive apps that will make supporting these local business areas as easy as taking a stroll through the mall.) And this new redevelopment of our mission comes with another interesting piece of news: I am the proud new President of Locally Owned Tallahassee, and my work in both of these capacities will be focused on helping to reverse the city’s “Chain Addiction”, and encouraging greater support of our homegrown, organic, and unique culture. While this is covered in greater detail on the next page, let me just say here that I am energized by the possibilities that lie ahead. And we have some great plans in store. Thank you, as always, for reading Villager and supporting our advertisers, and we hope you enjoy our new focus – as it is now and as it unfolds. And we are always looking for strong contributors who can help us grow and improve. Joe Berg, Publisher

Villager Publisher Named New President of Locally Owned Tallahassee By Terry Lester Locally Owned Tallahassee (LOT) – the city’s independent business association – has announced Joe Berg, publisher of this newspaper, as its newly elected President. Berg will take the helm from The Other Side Vintage owner Zan Bielec, who has led the organization for several years (and will continue to serve on the board.) While this news is relatively new, Berg and Bielec have outlined several key areas of development for the coming holiday season and the years to follow: • Launch a new campaign to replace “Sassy Squirrel” that will be developed by working with local business districts and key players to have the highest impact.

• Grow the organization’s membership roster (it is supported by dues from independent businesses) to 500 over two years, with 150 by the end of 2012. • Launch a saturating PR campaign for the 2012 holiday season, tentatively planned to hit the week after Black Friday. • Achieve recognition of the new campaign among 50% of Leon County residents within two years, with the goal of having these same residents considering locally owned options in their buying decisions.

Berg pointed to cities like Austin, Texas, when asked about these goals. “All of these cities that are renowned for their local culture – like Austin, or Portland, Oregon – have something about their

local culture that is often overlooked when people talk about cities Tallahassee could be more like. They all have robust, ground-up independent business associations that are widely supported. Local shopping is a way of life, and that creates an economy for the creation of local culture. “Three years after Austin’s Independent Business Association launched,” he continued, “68% of Austin residents were aware of the campaign. And they were actively considering local options. The execution will change from place to place, but the potential exists right here in Tallahassee for such a groundswell.” Berg added that none of these cities he named had full partnership with a local alternative newspaper, and he expects the efforts of the organization to be enhanced by Villager’s contributions, pointing out how he intends for the newspaper to serve as a bullhorn for the organization. “An effective local campaign like this can’t be done simply from the ground up, or only from the top down. So what Villager cannot do, LOT can. And vice versa. Villager will be donating full page ads to the cause, providing continuous coverage, and exploring the impact of local shopping in great depth. LOT will be building a ground network of businesses and organizations that will relay the message to their consumers and members. And LOT will be approaching other local media for coverage and partnership as well, as the effort grows.” “We will need all local businesses, organizations, groups, and districts to be working together. Because a rising tide will raise all ships, and local business is

too much of an afterthought right now. I think that we need to reconsider what defines progress, and have some long discussions about whether we want Tallahassee to be a suburban chain-store mecca, or a vibrant capital city that is known more for its unique local culture. Because there are thousands of chain store meccas where people can move if that is what they want.” More details about the group’s efforts will be forthcoming. But for now, LOT is

seeking new interested business members as well as volunteers who can serve in every capacity.

The Film Junkie’s Paradise (and Some Killer Coffee) by The Primal Root Let’s face it. With the downfall of Tallahassee’s major independent cinema, Miracle 5, and the collapse of the corporate video rental stores, our options for great filmic entertainments have dwindled to a couple dozen mainstream films crammed in a box at the gas station. But there is hope, movie fans. Right here in Tallahassee, Video 21, the film junkie’s sanctuary has been a Tallahassee tradition for over 30 years. Open 12pm-10pm 7 days a week, Video 21 is the last-standing old school rental store for buffs and passive observers alike. Take your driver’s license and your debit/credit card and sign up for free to gain access to their constantly growing selection of cinematic offers. Everything from the most popular Hollywood and Indie releases to old favorites and beloved Golden Age classics. Video 21 even has extensive Foreign and Cult Film sections with hundred’s of titles you won’t find anywhere else. Adult video purchases are, also, available. Located at 1449 East Lafayette Street (just across from Governor’s Square Mall), Video 21 shares the same build-

ing with Craig’s Killer Coffee, which brews one of the best cups of Joe in town (and also has made-from-scratch cookies, breads, muffins, pizza, and quiches.) Open 7:30am to 3pm Monday through Friday, and 9am to 3pm on weekends. Craig’s provides an excellent spot to grab some breakfast and java on the go, a great place to hunker down and study, or the perfect spot to just get comfortable and enjoy decent folk and a fine cup of coffee and baked awesomeness. So just before or right after Craig’s Killer Coffee perks you up, be sure to stop by Video 21 where Terry, Paul, and Kevin are always happy to help you locate exactly what movie you’re in the market for. Video 21 also, has the distinction of being the headquarters of The Trash Cinema Collective, which hosts monthly screening of bizarre, disturbing, mind-warping -- but always enlightening -- cult films at another local class act, Bird’s Aphrodisiac Oyster Shack. The Trash Cinema Collective even has their own section chock full of the strange and unusual. 3 Day Rentals. New Releases $3.25, Regular movies $2.55 .

THE ALL SAINTS ALMANAC A section for Tallahassee’s thriving arts & culture community.

A

fter years of redevelopment, The All Saints District (alternately referred to as Gaines Street) is back in full force. At the nexus between FSU, FAMU, and downtown, All Saints has perhaps the widest range of offerings of any district in Tallahassee. Just blocks from Doak Campbell Stadium and the new College Town project next to the intramural fields, All Saints has something for just about everyone -- a veritable field of wild flowers ripe for the picking. From the post-grad-esque lounge (where you are as likely to hear a confab about particle physics and politics as you are to hear about football), to the all-night coffee bar that resembles the quaint comfort of a friend’s basement, to the smokey dive bars, to the upscale live music venue, to the four new (and counting) restaurants, to the score of local boutiques and vintage shops, to the tattoo and piercing parlors, to the head shop, to the craft hot doggery, to the avant garde theater. And we’re just scratching the

surface. We also include in All Saints (though some do not) Railroad Square -- the one-time-railroad-depot-turned-art-park that features 60+ shops and studios, and Tallahassee’s premiere monthly “block party” on First Fridays. (In fact, the entire neighborhood gets jumping on these nights as thousands descend on the area, and its a great time to browse in and out of all the shops and take in a few shows at the same time.) And while All Saints has something for everyone, it also almost certainly has a place where the odd-one-out, the non-conformist, the nerd, the intellectual, or the slummer can find a community to call their own -- as much as it has a place for everyone else. So we say “do as the locals do”, and spend some time in this neighborhood at the crossroads of so many alternative and mainstream communities. You can’t say you have experienced Tallahassee until you have. SHOP LOCAL! PLAY LOCAL! LIVE LOCAL!/Oct 19, 2012/ vol. 1 iss. 12/ CapitalCityVillager/

Opened in late 2011, Retrofit is soon celebrating their one year anniversary up at the shop. If you’re looking for a record, or a “pinkie out” high fluency conversation about post avant garde industrial German thrash punk or how Morrissey was really a concept band, this is the record store for you. Retrofit has a wide selection of albums from nearly every walk of genre, save mainstream radio music. To do so would be blasphemy to the Vinyl gods. They’re also in the process of starting up a record listening club that meets most Thursday nights to discuss an album of the week, as well as the growing intellectual degradation that dominates much of mainstream music culture. Retrofit has been putting on shows since it’s inception, through the promotion company, Back to the Garage. Back to the Garage has been doing punk and “off the beaten path” shows for the past decade and continues to bring great, and at times bizarre talent through town. On October 30th, comes their oneyear anniversary party, featuring King Tuff off of Sub Pop records, with support from The Intelligence hailing from Seattle. In the last year alone, has come special visits from OFF’s Keith Morris, as well as a special in store performances by the Akron Family and Japanther. Whatever you do, don’t ask Bradley for the new Dave Matthew’s record, trust me- they’re out of stock.

A redditor recently described St. Mike’s as “a room full of non-conformists all dressed the same” and I tend to agree. Although, it is not without it’s charm, St. Mike’s (short for St. Michael’s Pub) takes its name from the ajoining street in the All Saint’s district and is

home to a divey smoke filled bar where many people who would find themselves loathing their environment at the Tennessee Strip or night clubs can come to feel at home and in good company. The bar is home to a host of regulars, many of which work at the surrounding businesses around Gaines. It’s not ritzy, and at times it’s a little raw, but for cheap beer, free darts, and a local friendly spot, you’re in the right place. Tip to the uninformed: don’t ask what beers they have, there’s a menu for that, and it’s a sure way to get a laugh at your expense. The bar is no longer doing shows there, and after a serious of fumbles with permitting issues, had to abandon the idea of opening up a venue in the adjacent building next to the bar. The good news is that sometime in the late Fall, Gaines Street Pie, a new pizza place focusing on New York style pizza and late hours will be opening in the adjacent building. Cheers to cheesier times in the near future.

Olde Fields

A relatively new comer to the All Saints Neighborhood, Olde Fields Clothing Co. opened their doors last February. Don’t let the youth of this shop fool you- packed with the latest fashion trends, hand made goods, local art and it’s own line of t-shirts and apparel it quickly became a staple for shopping in Tallahassee. Started by locals with a strong sense of what Tallahassee is and can be, Olde Fields has raised the bar for local boutiques. You can even catch a show here from time to time. They now market to a surprising demographic of a lot more girls clothing than they originally thought, and have found traction in selling on FAMU and FSU’s campus during market days. Olde Fields has been doing First Friday shows and acoustic acts loosely since they’ve opened. They just participated

for the second year at Gaines Street Fest and are a great place to check out local clothes lines, local art, and the occasional show.

Hidden Hand

The newest venue on the block, is in some ways is last foothold on the staple of the block’s long and illustrious music venue past. Formerly the Farside, an all ages sober music space, was an adjoining side entity known as the Engine Room. The Engine Room had a much larger capacity, but the Farside was home to a smaller operation and consistent crew of people who cared genuinely that the space be as inclusive as possible, so that whether you were fifteen or fourty you could feel comfortable in the space to see music. While a stretch for the alcoholics among us to enjoy live music without a beer in tow, the Farside was able to survive and prosper in a odd niche at a time the Gaines Street revitalization was only really beginning to happen.

All Saints District

Last December, the Engine Room shut its doors as we knew them, and with it’s exodus went the Farside. Now, some of the previous organizers of the Farside have opened up a small, but cozy, music space in the Euphoria tattoo annex on Gaines directly across from St. Michael’s pub, and they have a very promising future ahead of them. On October 30th, comes David Liebe Heart band, who was popularized by his puppet work on Adult Swim’s “Tim and Eric show”. And while his Punk band will likely have little to do with his puppet work, his creative eccentricities should shine through with a very genuine quality. The Hidden Hand is still very much a work in progress -- they’re still working on their bar license, but responsible BYOB patrons are welcome. Expect a young crowd, who has a very strong sense of camaraderie, with music ranging from folk to punk rock, and always a surprise or two even to the trained show-goer.

Attention shoppers! Have you already started preparing that list for Santa? Well, I can tell you one thing that you don’t have to ask for: A killer music scene. No need to sit at home bored, wondering what the cool kids are doing tonight in Brooklyn, Austin, or Portland. Chances are the most amazing band you’ll ever hear is playing somewhere soon in a nearby neighborhood venue. Seriously folks, the question is no longer “what am I going to do tonight?” It’s more of a time management issue these days. On any given night there are multiple choices for live music. You can pick something familiar, or venture out into the great unknown. Our city is evolving. We’ve got actual districts now. There are artistic, cultural, and social gathering spots. Don’t be shy. Around town

Must See Sex Manatee

Those who claim that all humans came from monkeys have never encountered the Sex Manatee, a local fixture on Tallahassee’s bar and music scene. This walking paean to “sex rock” is the only entity in town more libidinous than our capital building and its dome balls as viewed traveling westbound on Appalachee Parkway. Last we saw the Sex Manatee, he was peeling off his Celtics jersey on stage at The Filling Station, exposing his monumental girth and floating into the audience to deliver lap dances to giddy girls during a Catfish Alliance show, the band for which he sings, raps, and makes hype. Their latest album, Sex, Manatees & Rock ‘N’ Roll, was recorded at the Blackbird Studio in Nashville, Tennessee and was released last July. It is unclear whether other humanmanatee hybrids of his kind exist. Legend has it that he crawled out of Wakulla Springs one winter and walked straight onto Tallahassee’s music scene. Find him at a Catfish Alliance show in Midtown, seek him out while tailgating at football games, or run into him at last call. Like pure-bred manatees, he loves it when you scratch his belly.

Midtown District

There was a time not that long ago when Tennessee and Monroe Streets were the heart of Tallahassee. With no interstate until 1975, everyone traveled to town on Florida’s tourist highway, U.S. 27, and the path was defined by locally owned businesses, run by unique people and sometimes very colorful characters. Skyline Motor Lounge pays tribute to some of those special places, people, and a time when Tallahassee took things a bit slower.

THE MIX

- Hanaka A. on Yelp

Midtown is one of Tallahassee’s bursting 18-hour districts: busy bistros, offices, and shops by day, and bustling hubs of nightlife when the evening comes. This large (triangular) district touches

downtown on the South, Lake Ella and Tharpe St. on the north, and extends East up Thomasville Rd. More at IHeartMidtown.com, and watch this space as we explore more in the future.

The Paperback Rack (now with concerts) You WILL find the gift she loves... In the Cottages at Lake Ella. QuarterMoonImports.com

The Paperback Rack is a locally-owned bookstore of 28 years’ standing, and is dedicated to presenting the broadest and most diverse selection of books possible. They are proud to specialize in much-maligned genre fiction - mysteries, science fiction and westerns - but just as proud of their children’s books and philosophy, history, LGBT and foreign language sections, to name a few. They offer store credit for trades, long hours, friendly, knowledgeable staff and a mellow atmosphere. Since January of this year, The Paperback Rack has begun to offer biweekly concerts (2nd and 4th Friday of the month - with occasional special week-

day shows to accommodate traveling acts), in an effort to support live music and to show its gratitude to the community that has kept it open all these years. The shows are inexpensive - usually $3, and a typical bill includes 3-5 great local bands, and free coffee (provided by Black Dog and Emile Boghos Enterprises), with books always on sale during shows. Recently they’ve begun to feature national and international acts, such as Austin’s Mira Loma, and this coming Febuary, Relapse Records artists Fuck The Facts from Canada. The best way to stay up to date on sales, concerts, and events is to find their facebooks: Paperbackrack and PBRLive.
