Helping individuals, families, couples and groups achieve positive, sustainable and desired change in their lives! By Allen Joseph Like the deeply demonstrated message in the 1947 Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life,” it is amazing how much our lives and actions have human and environmental connections that affect thousands of others and maybe even all life on earth. Many aspects of the holidays make us aware of how we affect those we physically touch, but it takes a movie or a little extra thought to remind us how deeply our connections run to those we’ve never meet. How we use our money in a community -- and all the multipliers in the global society -- is just like supporting George Bailey’s Building & Loan, which used deposits to help local citizens own homes and open businesses. Each one of us helps shape the entire world, even if we never leave our community. Our economy globalized in the 1980s, so now Clarence the angel would have to demonstrate to George, played by James Stewart, that millions of people in developing countries who make our everyday products are connected to us by our conscious or unconscious decisions.
Magic moment
The chain of cause and effect on a world scale comes to a head at that poignant moment when you put your hardearned money on a counter and make what seems the simplest of acts — you purchase an item. But in so doing, you also vote for every action embodied in
the item you purchase. You affect decisions on local ownership of a store, how the item got to the store, its packaging, international trade, how the resources were harvested, the environmental and working conditions during production, or even whether a child goes to school because the mother made a living wage in a developing country. As you hold that store-bought item, take an extra look and think — beauty is deeper than the shiny, lead-painted surface. Would you and your gift receiver like to look at that object on your bookshelf for the next 20 years and know that all the relationships between the hundreds of people involved were the best they could be at that moment in history?
FEELING STUCK? “No matter how stuck and hopeless you may feel, you have the power to take control and embrace the person you’d like to be.”

Try second-hand
If you cannot find environmentally or socially conscious new items, consider an antique gift or buying fun 1960s and ‘70s throwback gifts at local secondhand stores. Reused, recycled, sustainable, Fair Trade, local or union-made are what you’re looking for. Add as many factors as you can. U.S union-made and Fair Trade have both the highest wage and environmental standards. You might even decide to buy a gift that educates the receiver about the solution to pollution while demonstrating the true meaning of Christmas — making every life a wonderful life. You might even get your wings.

Locally Owned Declares Holiday Shopping Weekend
(Photo by Bob O’Lary.) Local elected leaders and leaders of local business and civic organizations show their support for Locally Owned Tallahassee’s inaugural Shop Local Holiday Weekend at a press conference held on November 27 at the shops at Lake Ella. The organization unveiled its new mascot (pictured on the cover of this issue), received proclamations from the City of Tallahassee and Leon County declaring Dec. 7-9 Shop Local Holiday Weekend, and highlighted its goals for the next two years. Coverage was earned from The Tallahassee Democrat, WCTV News, and WFSU-FM (88.9). (See the ad on page 3 for more information about the weekend’s events.) Voodoo Dog Mural: The Apotheosis of Frank.
Kemeys Goethe with the ascendant Frank. By Max Herrle Photos by Sarah Notley If you’ve walked into Voodoo Dog on Gaines Street in the last couple of weeks, there’s no mistaking the newest mural around the neighborhood. But unlike most, this mural is inside and well hidden. Covering their back hallway is what began as a job for budding muralist -- Kemeys Goethe -- and ended as an obsession. The mural stretches the restaurant’s
Goethe provides a personal tour for the resident art critics from Highlights Magazine. Though the review was glowing, the critics were unable to find a hairbrush, a soccer ball, a flute, or several other objects they insisted must have been hidden in the mural. numerous walls, nooks, and crannies, and depicts the story of a hot dog named Frank and his religious Voodoo odyssey to an inevitable bacon-wrapped divinity. Goethe has been painting murals since 2008, starting with the walls of the former Engine Room and moving onto contracted work that has included college Greek organizations, a boxing gym, a church, and bedrooms. Goethe is a Fine Arts major at FSU and aspires to be a Children’s book illustrator, and that
inspiration is clear in his child-like coyness across the Voodoo Dog walls. The mural took over two months to complete and spans over 7,900 square feet. In it, you can find eleven ‘Franks’, four giant squids, fifty heads of lettuce, and seventeen monkeys -- which at times cheer the protagonist Frank on his journey of bacon imbuement. The instructions for this mural were simple; no white. Goethe took this wideopen request and ran with it, creating the narrative tale of “The Apotheosis of
Frank.” “I wanted to tell a sort of legend of how the Voodoo Dog came to be,” said Goethe. “My idea for the character of Frank, being that he’s a wiener, is that he is an aloof, romantic hot dog, at the mercy of his quixotic delusions; so the mural is really just a big self-portrait.” Voodoo Dog has been around since 2009, and has gained notoriety for its bacon-wrapped hotdogs and sometimes offbeat selection of toppings (humus, guacamole, sour cream, chili, pineapple, fried egg, macaroni and cheese, etc.) Goethe plans on releasing a 20-page coloring book for the restaurant to compliment the mural, which will be free at Voodoo Dog starting on December 1st. Voodoo Dog is located on Macomb and Gaines Street and is open 7 days a week.

Bet you didn’t know all this... Tallahassee on (synthetic) Ice. (Or is that “designer” ice?)
Outdoor ice skating returns to downtown’s Kleman Plaza for the holiday season. The ice surface is Florida-proofed; actually a synthetic compound, but looks and feels like the real thing. The rink will be open from Saturday, Dec. 1, through Sunday, Jan. 6. Hours and days of operation vary. For a complete list of dates and times, visit www.talgov.com/ parks/parks-winter.aspx. An hour-long skating session, including skate rental, costs $6.

ica’s first Christmas and the Spanish colonial era at Mission San Luis, just minutes from downtown Tallahassee, and get to step back in time on Dec. 16 at the Winter Solstice Celebration from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. and experience living history, a Winter Solstice Craft Fair, Native American flute musicians, children’s crafts and more. At 6 p.m., Native American and Apalachee culture and heritage is celebrated in the council house – an impressive five-story, thatched roof, wooden structure, where residents of the mission met on important matters. The Tallahassee Astronomy Society rounds out the evening with views of the winter sky through high-powered telescopes.
A Fresh Idea: Alternative Gifting (Dec 7 – 8)
Alternative gifts are non-plastic, won’t-end-up-in-the-landfill and are guaranteed not to burden you with debt. Instead they bring JOY to your holiday shopping experience. Over 30 non-profit charitable organizations volunteer to help you turn your contributions into holiday gifts. An elderly person may enjoy Meals-On-Wheels for a week in lieu of your brother receiving another tie. Damayan Garden Project may train a family on home gardening, rather than your mother getting another crock pot. The idea is to honor your loved one who has enough by giving to those who need

The winter holidays are the time of year in my household when we start looking forward to our yearly television reminders of true seasonal joy. Of course, I’m talking about Charlie Brown, Rudolph, and Ralphie in the bunny suit. The classic animation and sweet stories offer the nostalgia that is required to make it through the rest of the commercialized Christmas chaos. Unless you’re watching your favorite holiday shows online or on DVD, the irony is that you will be bombarded by advertising for the latest wonder gadgets you can’t live without. However, there is one thing you won’t see commercials for: books. Well, I take that back. Actually, you will see commercials for something that reads books for you via your phone or laptop, but do you really want to be that person? Have we really become a society that can’t even read our own books? Seriously, people. Put down the Cheetos, take a walk outside, and turn some pages. I’m not preaching, just offering a suggestion. Fortunately, Tallahassee has the perfect place to begin your literary journey: the Paperback Rack. For book lovers, the Paperback Rack has been a favorite for many years. Located at 1005 N. Monroe Street, the locally-owned shop is a great place to trade in your old books and discover new ones. An original treasure in Midtown, the shop offers much more than just books. They also serve as art gallery, music venue, and occasional coffee house. If you attend one of their monthly
concerts, be prepared for a fantastic sensory overload. For a meager cover at the door, you can hear some great live music, pick up a book, admire some artwork, and even enjoy a free cup of coffee. It’s like a little mini vacation. “When you come to a show here, you get art mixed with more art,” said one concert attendee. “It’s a super cool experience.” Having gone to several shows, I definitely agree. Being able to sit and read some poetry -- with a live soundtrack playing as you sip your coffee -- is pretty inspiring. The Paperback Rack not only offers the new titles and classics that you crave, they also have works of fiction, poetry, and CDs from local authors and musicians. If you happen to be a local artist or writer, it makes sense to support someone who supports you. If you’re a lover of art, literature, or music, this is your opportunity to get a taste of what makes our community unique and vibrant. Perhaps you just happen to be eating at Masa or drinking at Midtown Pass, and always wondered what the heck goes on at that weird little spot in between the two restaurants? Slow down, step inside, and check it out. I promise that you will at least get a respite from the digital madness. You may even be able to complete your holiday shopping with a few good books or an original piece of art.
To stay on top of upcoming events at the Paperback Rack, follow their Tumblr or Facebook.com/PBRlive

Don’t Feed Shoppers After Midnight, and Don’t Get Them Wet: Gremlins Revisited By Primal Root Trash Cinema Collective Out of all the movies I saw as a child only one completely obliterated my idealized thoughts of Christmas, of authority, consumerism, and of the American Dream itself. One movie got me looking at the mass marketed American image in the 1980’s, and planted the idea that there might be something wrong with this picture. And it was a damn kid’s flick! I am, of course, talking about Joe Dante’s 1984 subversive, goopy, violent, nasty little horror film, ‘Gremlins’. The film itself is a satire of mid-1980’s ‘Me’ America; a time when the yuppies reigned supreme and those in the dwindling middle class found themselves screwed over as work became harder to find, and a dark mischief steadily snuck its way into the homes of both the wealthy and underprivileged alike in the form of the scaly, razor-fanged, redeyed Gremlins. A bizarre reminder that our actions and carelessness can incur the direst of consequences. Gremlins takes place in picturesque, old-fashioned, Norman Rockwell America. A town where values such as selfreliance, independence, and personal
responsibility have been completely warped in the pursuit of easy money. It’s a world where the junior vice president of the town bank strives to become a millionaire by the time he’s 35, and only finds value in his new apartment (HOLY SHIT! It even has Cable TV!). It’s a place where the self-indulgent Haves preach responsibility, but cannot be asked to help save a Have-Not family from being evicted on Christmas. Happy Holidays! Here, everything is a commodity to be bought or sold. Every resource can be tapped for possible exploitation. After bringing the mysterious Mogwai home, Mr. Peltzer makes the observation, “I bet every kid in America would want to have one of these. This could really be the big one!,” eyeing little Gizmo in terms of monetary value rather than as a living being. Obviously, this is the era of the “Get Rich Quick” scheme. Mr. Peltzer has given up gainful employment to be a full time inventor, trying to dream up the next “big thing” that will provide for him and his family the rest of their days. It’s Western civilization’s dream of making money without ever truly having to work for it. Only the wise Asian grandfather, representing non-American values, seems to sadly understand the obses-

sive, money-grubbing culture in which the country is becoming steeped. “Sold?,” he asks, after Mr. Peltzer makes an inquiry about obtaining Gizmo. “That’s an interesting choice of words.” His meaning is clear. Life is not something that should ever be bought or sold and Gizmo, of course, is a living, breathing, thinking being. ‘Gremlins’ is a remarkably thoughtful horror film ingeniously disguised as family friendly entertainment. It’s a film that reminds us that just below the fuzzy, cute and cuddly veneer of the society we’re sold dwells some serious problems that, if ignored and not dealt with, will become much worse and take a nice big bite out of our ass. But above all this, ‘Gremlins’ is a hellishly good time! It’s dangerous, gruesome, and over the top. A favorite scene of mine is when the recently hatched Gremlins run amuck through the Peltzer household, and Billy’s Mother must do battle with the little suckers using all the household appliances at her disposal including blenders, knives, and microwave ovens sending Gremlin guts spewing all over the good china. This stuff is sick. I remember watching the film as a child and my mind simply reel-
ing at this. People were being ripped, beaten, strangled, bitten and even killed by these malicious little Gremlins. But slowly a smile crept across my face as I realized what a joke it all was; these sacred American Christmas consumer traditions. The fact that the final battle between Stripe, Billy, and Gizmo takes place inside a shopping center filled to the brim with hollow, consumer goodies can’t be a coincidence. Joe Dante’s ‘Gremlins’ proudly takes those Christmas traditions so many hold dear, tears off the wrapping paper and reveals the reality underneath. ‘Gremlins’, you ruined Christmas for a generation of 80’s kids. And I, for one, cannot thank you enough.
Holiday Screening!
Joe Dante’s ‘Gremlins’ will be showing at Trash Cinema Nights at Bird’s Aphrodisiac Oyster Shack on Saturday December 8th at 10 p.m.(as always, NO COVER!) followed by the Black Elephant Gift exchange. Bring a wrapped, Trashy gift to participate! Gift cannot exceed $15. Visit Facebook.com/Groups/TrashCinemaNights for more info and to Vote on January’s Trash Cinema Night selection.
