DOING GOOD IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Entrepreneurs talk about the ways their businesses give back to the community

“One thing that our business does, as do some of these other examples, is it involves the people in the community in the solution. I think that’s really important. It creates a relationship between those not-forprofits in the community and the causes they serve and business who are doing things that they do on a regular basis.” C A R O LY N M A RT I N, f o u n d e r a n d CEO of Sponsor Energy, sponsorenergy.com

“Mealshare is a nonprofit organization that partners with restaurants. The restaurant will choose one, two, three menu items, and off of that menu item, the company or restaurant donates back to Mealshare. It equates to one meal from the customer equals one meal for somebody else … the money that our customers are giving us for our poutine perogies (which quickly became our second top seller when it became a Mealshare item). It’s that connection and (knowing what they do) makes a difference.”

NEXT EVENT

Better together When: August 27, 2015, noon to 1 p.m. Where: Glenbow Museum RSVP at capitalideasyyc8. eventbrite.com

“The co-operative model is almost by definition community-orientated. In our case our first priority is to create living wage jobs for our members. Because of the economic democracy component, where the members collectively manage the business, sort of keeping the decision making as well as the profits or the surplus in the business or in the community rather than sending them elsewhere.”

Thank you! Jennifer Wong, manager of entrepreneurship with ATB, left, presents Jaclyn Bock, HR Generalist at Salopek & Associates (salopekconsulting.com), with a door prize after the event.

“Doing good does not adversely impact the bottom line. The opposite is true. @SponsorEnergy has it right.”

Brad Celmainis, president of Brad Celmainis Consulting, @bradcelmainis

“Businesses NEED to share how they give back so they can inspire others. Good advice from @SponsorEnergy #humblebrag” Jill Dewes, managing director at Uppercut, @madebyuppercut

“Younger people are making decisions based on (a company’s) transparency’ Great to see business catching on to this.”

Liz Corderre, @curiousitycode
