HOW DO YOU BUILD THE BEST TEAM? Entrepreneurs share how they find, keep and retain great staff

“We have a good relationship with Olds College who has a fabulous apparel technology program. We also rely on our team a lot to talk to their friends. If you’re an artist in Calgary you have very little opportunity to practice your craft. It’s always great when a team member says ‘I’ve got my friend I want to introduce them,’ because that tells me that we’re probably doing a lot of things right that they’re willing to get their own friends to come work for us.”

“I call it the three ‘-ates’: participating, collaborating and celebrating. To keep the team going, we celebrate as much as we can ... It’s really easy for me to get a little more removed from the dayto-day operations (as) I don’t have the skills my technical team does, but I can provide business insight so I try to follow the three ‘-ates’ to keep it going.” DON O’DWYER, CEO of Raven Bay Services, ravenbayservices.com

“Part of the thing I’ve really had the opportunity with being an entrepreneur is being able to do what I love. I want to create that same environment with my team. I want them to come in, love their job, love what they’re doing. We try to do more than just working with dogs, we try to coach some life skills and help them realize that life is too short … We work hard, we play harder.” MEGAN ARMSTRONG, owner of Dogma Training & Pet Services Inc., dogmatraining.com
