Newlyn School of Art

Page 1

Since opening its doors in September 2011 Newlyn School of Art has built up a teaching staff of over twenty-five tutors who are among the most respected artists working in Cornwall today. This year we have added some new artist tutors including Rose Hilton, potter Jack Doherty, sculptor Tim Shaw, Kate Walters, Caroline Pedler and Jacqui Knight. The school is situated in the heart of the famous artistic colony of Newlyn a few hundred yards from where the Forbes School of Painting was run by Stanhope Forbes, the ‘Father’ of the Newlyn School of Painters, between 1899 and 1941. We provide a wide range of exciting short art courses in painting, drawing, printmaking, pottery, sculpture, fabric printing and art history. We also have regular Events throughout the year. The Calendar of course dates can be found on the reverse of the brochure and on the website. Henry Garfit Director/Founder NEW Drawing Methods & Materials with

www.newlynartschool.co.uk Life Drawing sessions

Don’t miss our Life Drawing sessions every Wednesday evening taught by many of the best known artists working in Cornwall today including:

This inspiring one day Mark Making course is aimed at helping artists to learn to loosen up and play through drawing and painting. The course will encourage students to get beyond the blank page to a point where your painted and drawn marks intuitively lead your eye and hand. You will be encouraged to find your own artistic voice through experimental play.

This enjoyable course emphasises the flexibility of watercolour, encouraging freedom of application through broader use of paint, quick studies and large scale work; with additional advice on washes, colour mixing, perspective, pattern and texture. Time will be spent on location in West Penwith and at the School studio. Suitable for all skill levels.

This intensive two day course explores mark making, colour and composition. The teaching will include practical exercises looking at the work of the great 20th century masters and leading contemporary abstract painters analysing techniques and strategies. The expressive and emotional qualities of colour will be explored as well as its formal qualities.

Both monoprinting and drypoint are wonderfully immediate printmaking processes which can inform and reflect the process of painting. Using simple very accessible methods of drawing and applying coloured printing ink, vibrant and unique original prints can be created. Monoprinting and drypoint would be of benefit to artists of all levels of experience to help provide a foundation for new avenues in their work.

This exciting three day course is led by renowned sculptor Tim Shaw who will encourage students to explore the figure with dynamic drawing through to modelling the human form in wax. There is a strong emphasis on understanding the natural balance of weight distribution that the figure is bound by in motion. Drawing and modelling will be integrated into each other over the three days - drawing with ink, sticks, brushes, charcoal etc. Tuition will be given on the basics of modelling the figure using wire and wax.

This extremely useful two day course gives artists of all levels the opportunity to explore new, sometimes unfamiliar, painting materials and methods with which they might transform their painting practice. Through a mixture of one to one tuition and demonstrations Tutor Jesse Leroy Smith will help students to push the boundaries of their practice.

Our one day Gouache course provides a wonderful ‘taster’ of this exciting medium. Many well known artists from J M W Turner through to Patrick Heron, Howard Hodgkin, Roger Hilton and, more recently, Anish Kapoor have used gouache as a painting medium. Maggie O’Brien is the most generous and encouraging of artist teachers; sharing the tricks of her trade and helping students to brave trying methods and techniques which are new to them.

This course will concentrate on the crisp, sharp lines of dry point and in contrast, carborundum which O’Casey used to create rich textured areas of tone. Mary Crockett who created prints with O’Casey towards the end of his life will guide students throughout the course. Stoneman Graphics who made many of his prints over the years have generously lent plates and prints made by the artist.

This four day course is for beginners and those that have a little experience of carving. The aim of the course is to provide each student with the skills and creative confidence to work with stone. The course is structured throughout - progressing through a series of staged approaches closely guided by your tutor, each student produces a small relief carving and a fully in-the-round sculpture.
