Making Tax Digital (MTD) - Is your business ready?

Starting 1 April 2019, all VAT registered businesses with taxable turnover above the VAT registration threshold (currently £85K) will be required to keep financial records in digital form and file their VAT Returns using software that is capable of keeping and maintaining the records in line with this new system. Here are some of the key points to note: ▪ MTD applies to VAT periods starting on or after 1st April 2019 for those with a turnover above the VAT threshold. From 2020, it will apply to VAT registered businesses with a turnover below this threshold. ▪

A business which submits quarterly returns must comply from the first period start date on or after 1 April 2019. So if the period dates are 1 March – 31 May, the business will need to comply with Making Tax Digital rules for the period starting 1 June 2019. A business submitting monthly returns will need to comply for the period starting 1 April 2019.

Digital submission does require compatible software. HMRC does not approve or recommend any particular software but a list of providers of compatible software can be found at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/software-for-sending-income-taxupdates#VAT

If you currently use spreadsheets to calculate your VAT return, it may be possible to continue using this method but you will need MTD-compatible software so that you can send HMRC your VAT returns and receive information back from HMRC. Bridging software may be required to make spreadsheets MTD-compatible.

Only the information from the nine boxes of the VAT return will be sent to HMRC – not all the transactions.

Once signed up, you cannot revert to the old system even if your turnover drops below the threshold.

The income tax deadline is not changing.

For further information, please see the government website which includes some short videos explaining the process: www.gov.uk/guidance/help-and-support-for-making-tax-digital
