Introduction to Commercial Fishing Course 3-21 October 2016 The Seafish 3 week Introduction to Commercial Fishing course is for new entrants to the fishing industry who are at least 16 years old. The course consists of two weeks of shore-based training (covering safety, gear and catch handling, net mending, rope work and navigation) and one week of mandatory safety courses (Sea Survival, Fire Fighting, First Aid, Health & Safety) as well as the Seafish Basic Fishing Vessel Stability course. This introductory level course will suit both young people looking for a career at sea in the fishing industry as well as those looking for a change of career. If you meet the eligibility criteria, the course will be fully funded via Seafish.

Skippers Ticket GMDSS VHF SRC course

There is funding available for experienced fishermen wishing to refresh any of their basic training or complete the short courses required for the Under 16.5m Skippers Ticket. Candidates must have at least 2 years fishing experience and already hold all four basic safety certificates– Sea Survival / PST, First Aid, Fire Fighting, Health & Safety to be eligible (subject to Seafish approval). For the Skippers Ticket, they must also have completed their Safety Awareness training. There is currently no funding for new entrants to the fishing industry willing to undertake their Basic Safety Training.

Our training room, the Seafood Cornwall Training Hub, can be hired for Board meetings, small conferences and a variety of other functions and events. The Hub is ideally located on the quayside in Newlyn and is equipped with a fully integrated Smart Board and WiFi. There is also a backyard with picnic benches located within the Hub compound and some private parking spaces. Half Day: £30

FUNDING
Earlier this year the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) opened the €243m European Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF) in England. The scheme is currently open for projects which focus on the reform of the CFP such as: improving health and safety on fishing vessels; enhancing the quality or value of catch; investing in port and harbour infrastructure such as ports/auction halls/shelters; helping the processing of seafood and aquaculture products or general investments in aquaculture. FLAG
If you would like advice and support in developing your application prior to submission, Seafood Cornwall Training Ltd is running a service to advise and assist fishing businesses, harbours and fishermen’s associations with the applications for a small fee. Fisheries Local Action Group - The Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly FLAG is currently developing its strategy in hope to become a FLAG under the European Maritime & Fisheries Fund (EMFF). The FLAG is a membership group made up of fishing industry representatives (public and private). The FLAG has 4 priorities: 1. Supporting innovation, diversification and micro business development. Creating shared work space and collaboration between fishermen, fish marketing, adding value and development of energy reduction and innovation in plant and machinery. Improving the quality of the catch & waste solutions. 2. Developing and supporting social, economic and environmental projects which especially benefit smaller and isolated communities where the numbers of beneficiaries is low but impact is an important consideration. 3. Developing and supporting innovation in fish, fish products, fish waste and processes and adding value. Quality marks and catch quality. Environmental projects which benefit the wider fishing industry. Supporting social enterprise, branding and catch quality. Science and research, micro financial instruments. fish bi-products 4. Developing and supporting training to mentor new entrants. Working with skipper mentors and mentors in the wider fishing sectors to ensure entrants are safe and skilled in the many requirements of work.
