WHAT’S It all about?
From Friday 9th to Friday 16th October we’re CELEBRATING Seafood Week 2015 across the UK
We want to get people excited about seafood 365 days of the year but use Seafood Week as a specific focal point for fish and shellfish consumers to celebrate all things seafood. Whether it’s promoting seafood in the home, at a café, restaurant or fish and chip shop, or at an event, our campaign will provide all sectors of the industry with the opportunity to get involved. Seafood Week is centred around the idea of creating a buzz about the seafood on offer, and aims to be one of the highlights of the UK’s culinary calendar. More than that, it represents the perfect platform to encourage more people, to eat more fish, more often. Ultimately, this is a genuine chance to showcase the variety and quality of seafood available to UK consumers, and a real opportunity to focus on the importance of seafood in everyday life, primarily by encouraging more people to buy, taste and cook seafood.
Want to know more? Visit www.seafoodweek.co.uk for more information and digital versions of all marketing materials or email seafoodweek@seafish.co.uk
Raising awareness of Seafood Week is key. To help do that, in this toolkit you’ll find specific plans and ideas on how you can take part in Seafood Week. You’ll also find how to get hold of all the marketing materials you need to make the most of the week - from a local media press release template, written and ready to be sent, to social media ideas, downloadable logos, posters and bunting.

INSPIRATION
TO GET YOU STARTED Start conversation around the official themes throughout Seafood Week Have a look at the Seafood Week calendar on page 5. Think about offering a special offer on the Dish of the Day for that particular day. For example, on Friday 9th October to kick things off why not offer a half price dish or give out some samples? Get involved in the Cook Me, Dine Me, Buy Me section on the Seafood Week website too.
Ask your colleagues to start using the hashtag #seafoodweek on social media To start raising awareness ask the team in your office to start tweeting using the official hashtag #seafoodweek. Ask them to start talking about their favourite seafood, recipes, memories or anything else that’s relevant. It’s important to ignite this conversation on social media.
National Fish Pun Day (on launch day, Friday 9th October) This is a very visual way to encourage people to engage with Seafood Week online. Using types of seafood, for example, in titles of films, books, TV shows, etc., is a fun and easy way to highlight the fact that Seafood Week has started. Think of famous movies such as The Codfather, Jurassic Carp or Gill Bill to get you started and ask for some more. Ask people to come up with a famous quote or sentence using a fish pun – for example kickstart the conversation by saying “Do you have a fish pun – or do you want to mullet over?” Encourage people to replace a word in a famous book title with a fish pun, for example ‘The Da Vinci Cod’. Thinking visually on social media is key – i.e. encourage people to post pics with their tweets. For example, you ask people to send in their ‘celebrity fish puns’ so instead of Keith Lemon you could have Keith Lemon Sole – with a nice picture of the man in question. It’s important that whoever takes part uses the hashtag #seafoodweek.
There are various platforms available throughout Seafood Week, and beyond, that you can use to promote the event and your involvement in it. To help get you started we’ve listed some ideas to spark YOUR IMAGINATION.
Run a competition To encourage participation in whatever events you decide to stage, try running a competition. Offering an incentive is a great way to engage people. Think about what people would like to win – perhaps a prize of free seafood for a family of four for a week, might work. You could also draw attention to other competitions being run by keeping an eye on @fishisthedish and #seafoodweek, and retweeting and sharing their efforts to give away a fridge full of seafood.
Tie a promotion into other related events that are happening throughout Seafood Week Seafood Week isn’t the only promotion running from 9th-16th October so there are opportunities to get creative on social media or through in-store / shop promotions around the likes of: British Egg Week (5th-11th October) – promote egg recipes that go well with fish. Chocolate Week (12th-18th October) – promote a main fish dish that goes well with chocolate. This might be tricky, but an opportunity to have fun and be creative. World Food Day (16th October) – promote unusual recipes from around the world. Encourage people to eat fish in a different, unique and tasty way. National Cake Week (5th-11th October) – create your own fish dessert or even a special fish cake. National Curry Week (12th-18th October) – encourage people to eat more fish / seafood curry. There’s also the Scottish Year of Food and Drink, the month of ‘Sustainable Shores’ and the Rugby World Cup that are worth considering.

FOODSERVICE SECTOR
Seafood Week offers a fantastic chance to highlight the variety of incredible seafood availablE IN THE UK. IT’S AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE CONSUMERS AWARE OF SOME OF THE BEST SEAFOOD IN THE WORLD AND THERE ARE A NUMBER OF WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED,
Use our posters
Create a special menu
Start putting the posters in this toolkit around your premises. It’s a simple and effective way of telling your customers about Seafood Week and that you’re part of it. Use this as an opportunity to promote a special offer or deal throughout the week.
Use the platform that Seafood Week provides by creating a special menu that lasts throughout the week and showcases your skill and diversity. Try out different combinations and different species. Use Seafood Week to really highlight the quality and range of your establishment.
Submit a recipe for a competition
Create a signature seafood dish of the day
Run your own competition and ask people to send in their recipes, which you’ll cook and then serve to a judging panel. The winner could have their dish become part of your menu for Seafood Week. Again, let your local media know or get them along to taste the winning dish.
Throughout Seafood Week offer a different special each day that, again, offers some insight into the skill of your employees but also highlights the huge variety of fish and shellfish that is available in the UK. This also really ties in with the campaign message – ‘each day eat it your way’.
Submit your own recipes to Fish is the Dish
Offer someone the chance to work with you
Ask your own chef to send in their favourite or best selling recipes to our Fish is the Dish team at seafoodweek@seafish.co.uk to raise the profile of your business and highlight the depth and quality of your establishment.
To further enhance your reputation within the local community, and the local media, try running a competition where you offer a budding chef the chance to come and work in your kitchen alongside your team. This is a great chance to get some local media coverage.
Tag #seafoodweek in all social media posts If you’re posting anything on social media around Seafood Week don’t forget to include the official hashtag #seafoodweek. Post pics of any events you host, competitions and recipes.
Invite a local community group Invite a local community group (or local school kids) along for a special evening with your head chef, who can show them how to rustle up a simple and delicious seafood meal at home. This kind of thing tends to work well in local media so make sure you invite them along for some photo opportunities.
7
FISH and CHIP BUSINESSES Make a fuss of your customers Give your customers a different special offer every day throughout Seafood Week. It’s entirely up to you how you do this but, potentially, kids could eat free for the week or you could offer a buy one get one free deal.
Get customer pictures Ask your customers to upload a picture of themselves enjoying your fish and chips onto your social media page using the hashtag #seafoodweek to be in with the chance of winning a free portion (or similar) on their next visit. You choose the prize you want to give away.
Use our posters Add a real sense of occasion to the week by prominently displaying the Seafood Week posters and leaflets on your premises. It will really highlight the fact that you’re involved and remind customers what’s happening.
Get the local school involved Local school children are a great way to get local media coverage. Invite some of the local children along to your business then spend a little bit of time explaining what you do and why it’s so important. It’s a great way into some inspiring photo opportunities.
Use #seafoodweek in social posts Whatever you do or encourage your customers to do around Seafood Week, make sure you’re using the official hashtag. Any pictures, events or anything you get yourself involved in throughout the week try to get it on social media.
Seafood Week is also about connecting with your customers and encouraging engagement and interaction with the people you serve – after all you want to keep them coming back for more. Here’s some ideas to get you started. Tell us the strangest questions you’ve been asked in store Tell us about some of the funniest things you’ve ever been asked by customers. Running a fish and chip business is a lively affair so there are probably countless tales you can share with the people who follow you and the wider audience participating in Seafood Week.
Send us your recipes Do you have something special cooking in your kitchen? Why not share it with the Seafish Fish is the Dish team? You can email them at seafoodweek@seafish.co.uk and showcase how special your culinary delights really are.
Speak at a local community group Use Seafood Week to get out into the community and promote your business. Secure a spot speaking to local community groups about your business and bring along some free samples.
OFFER A FREE SAMPLE Consider offering waiting customers some free bitesize samples of some different fish species - perhaps hake, John Dory, or whiting. This can be a good starting point to engage with customers about species variety, different tastes and textures. You could even take to the streets around your shop with such bite-size samples and encourage passers-by to try something different.
8
RETAILERS AND FISHMONGERS Use our posters Add a real sense of occasion to the week by prominently displaying the Seafood Week posters and leaflets on your premises. It will really highlight the fact that you’re involved and remind customers what’s happening.
Get the local school involved Local school children are a great way to get local media coverage. Why not invite some of the local children along to your business to spend a little bit of time explaining what you do and why it’s so important. Give them a master class on different and unusual species as well as the importance of responsible sourcing. It’s a great way into some inspiring photo opportunities.
Create special offers Offer your customers something special throughout Seafood Week. It’s entirely up to you how you do this but potentially you could offer a ‘buy one get one free’ deal or use our official Seafood Week themes (see page 5) to highlight different species on different days with accompanying money off (or similar) offers.
Use #seafoodweek in social posts Whatever you do or encourage your customers to do around Seafood Week, make sure you’re using the official hashtag. Any pictures, events or anything you get yourself involved in throughout the week try to get it on social media. Ask if you can get pics of customers in your shop or even ask them to post pics of them preparing, cooking and eating seafood they’ve bought from you. Make sure they mention your business as part of their tweet too!
Tell us the strangest questions you’ve been asked in store How about telling us about some of the funniest things you’ve ever been asked by customers? Running a fishmonger business is a lively affair with lots of friendly and regular customers, so there are probably countless tales you can share with the people who follow you and the wider audience participating in Seafood Week.
Get your suppliers behind the counter Try switching traditional roles with the people who usually supply your fish and shellfish and get them behind the counter. They can offer an insight into how the fish was caught and give customers a very real idea of the effort that goes into bringing a catch home.
Send us your recipes Do you have some special advice you think the rest of the industry could benefit from in the kitchen? You’re probably better placed than most to offer advice and tips on how best to cook seafood so why not offer some of that wisdom? Why not share it with the Seafish Fish is the Dish team? You can email them at seafoodweek@seafish.co.uk
Speak at a local community group As an important member of the local community you should use Seafood Week to get out and promote your business. Try to secure a spot speaking to local community groups about your business and bring along some free samples. Tell them about what you do, offer to answer their questions and encourage them to get involved in Seafood Week by coming to your premises. For example, there might be a Guide or Scout group working towards a cookery badge (or similar) and you can help them along the way.
Want to get involved with Seafood Week but not quite sure how? Let us help you.

PRODUCERS and PROCESSORS Use our on-pack stickers
Use #seafoodweek in social posts
Join in with the campaign and put on-pack stickers on to all products going out from your company. You don’t need to just put the stickers on the packs that will be out for sale between the 9th-16th October, you can do this as soon as you want. Our toolkit has a range of templates for you to use.
Whatever you do or encourage your customers to do around Seafood Week, make sure you’re using the official hashtag. Any pictures, events or anything you get yourself involved in throughout the week try to get it on social media.
Offer to take a journalist on a tour of your premises
A very simple and effective way to get involved with Seafood Week is to send in some of your own recipes to Fish is the Dish. It will highlight your expertise as well as raising your own profile. You can email them at seafoodweek@seafish.co.uk
Media coverage is important throughout Seafood Week. We want people talking about the industry in a positive way. Getting local or, if possible, regional or national media involved is a great way to shine a light on the great things that you do. Offer to take a journalist around your premises and provide them with some genuine insight into the work you do and talk about why it’s important. This is also a chance for some great photo opportunities for the media.
Offer up a competition to Fish is the Dish Although Seafood Week is central to the activity we’re generating it doesn’t have to end there. Offering to provide a competition to Fish is the Dish that begins around Seafood Week but runs right throughout the year is one way of getting your business involved.
Send recipes to Fish is the Dish
Raising awareness of Seafood Week is a chance for everybody in the seafood industry to do their bit to promote and talk about the VARIETY and quality of seafood available to people in the UK. If you work in production and processing here’s how you can do your bit.
10
FISHERMEN Without the hard work and dedication of the people out there actually reeling in the catch we wouldn’t be able to stage something like Seafood Week. Your involvement is key to raising awareness of the campaign. Here’s a couple of ideas to give you some inspiration. Go to a local school
Stage your own photography exhibition
Your job is fascinating – especially to young people. You should consider giving up a little bit of your time to go into a local school and speak to the children about what you do for a living, the tools you use and what is actually involved in an average day for a fisherman. It is an opportunity to also speak about the importance of sustainability and the wild and interesting world of seafood – all the amazing species that are in our waters. And of course there is the ‘nag factor’! Get youngsters interested in seafood and they’ll go home asking their parents for it for dinner. This is the sort of thing local media will find interesting and potentially cover so with permission from the school get in touch and tell your local press about your visit.
Given the unique insight you have into how a catch is brought home, not to mention all the hours at sea, the preparation and the hard work that goes into it – why don’t you take some photos of your average day and try to get some of your colleagues to do the same? Stage the exhibition in a local market or at a local venue like a library, restaurant or shop during Seafood Week.
Tell your buyers about Seafood Week Letting people know Seafood Week is happening is crucial. Think about the people you deal with and interact with on a regular basis. Do they know about Seafood Week? Let them know. People like your buyers are in a prime position to help promote whatever you decide you should to take part in Seafood Week. Make them aware of what you’re doing.
11
BUYERS Tell your clients using Seafood Week posters We’ve supplied a lot of material in this toolkit that make promoting Seafood Week very simple. Print out some of our posters and place them around your premises to remind people that you’re part of Seafood Week and get them talking about it.
Offer special promotions To encourage people to buy more seafood products try promoting some special offers throughout Seafood Week. Have a look at our Seafood Week themes on page 5 for more inspiration on the species you may want to focus on.
Use #seafoodweek in social posts Whatever you do or encourage your customers to do around Seafood Week, make sure you’re using the official hashtag. As a buyer you’re in an ideal position to talk about and promote Seafish Week. Here’s some ideas to get you started.
12
COMMUNITY GROUPS Invite a fisherman, producer or fishmonger to speak to your group Asking the local fishing community along to meet and speak with your group will offer an incredible insight into the hard work that goes into the life of those in the seafood industry. Suggesting they bring along their own slideshow, pictures, memorabilia and potentially samples is an engaging way of getting your local group to come along and meet the people behind their seafood.
Organise a Fish Tea with a local restaurant Ask a local restaurant to organise a special tea for your members. Ask if they’ll do a discounted rate and put on a special menu as a one-off. Put the pictures on social media and your own website. Encourage the owner of the establishment to do the same all in the name of supporting #seafoodweek.
Organise an evening of seafood cooking Stage your own evening where members can have a go at creating/cooking some seafood dishes they may not normally try such as mackerel pate. Invite a local chef along to give you a one off special seafood cooking class. Get the local paper to come and photograph the event.
Use #seafoodweek in social posts Whatever you do or encourage your customers to do around Seafood Week, make sure you’re using the official hashtag. SHARE YOUR STORY WITH LOCAL MEDIA
Local media (like newspapers and radio stations) are always looking for great local stories
[YOUR BUSINESS] CELEBRATES SEAFOOD WEEK One simple way of alerting them to your Seafood Week activities is to send them a press release. Don’t worry, we’ve done all the hard work for you. We’ve compiled a pre-written press release – all you have to do is fill in the blanks and get it out there.
Seafood lovers in [INSERT TOWN/REGION] will be joining the rest of the UK to celebrate Seafood Week from Friday 9th October to Friday 16th October.
You’ll find the contact details of the journalists in your local paper. The best way is usually to call the newsdesk (details are usually found in the opening pages of the paper or on their website) or send them an email.

Chris Middleton, Head of Communications & Marketing at Seafish, said: “We want to bring the whole of the UK together to celebrate and showcase all the best that seafood has to offer. “We’ve been eating it for generations. SHARE YOUR STORY ON SOCIAL MEDIA 1 All you have to do is get involved, and it’s easier than you think. Here’s our five-step guide to getting the most OUT of social media.
4 5
Social media is a powerful way of spreading the message about Seafood Week and your business
Join up! Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are all useful and popular social media platforms. Simply visit their respective homepages, and sign up to get your account. Get Social! On Facebook, Twitter and Instagram you can set up a company account. This means that you can post information, deals, promotions and images from your business, and keep it going even after Seafood Week.
2 3
Only share a good story. Put simply, if it’s not that interesting to you, others won’t be interested either. So be selective with what you put out on social media – otherwise, you’ll be in danger of turning people away. People and promotions are usually universally popular, so if you stick within these themes, you should be on the right track.
A picture speaks a thousand words. Photos and videos are very popular on social media, and you don’t have to be a pro to do it well. Use your smartphone camera to capture a few behind the scenes photos of preparations for Seafood Week, or post a picture of any promotions or deals, and you should be onto a winner.
Consider advertising. You can spend a relatively small amount of money on Facebook and Twitter to help get your posts into the timelines of your local community. It’s fairly straightforward to set up, but if you’d like some help, contact the Seafood Week team by email at seafoodweek@seafish.co.uk.
Turn the page for more inspiration to keep your social media feeds fun and engaging before, during and after Seafood Week.
