Site Analysis Cultural Mapping Documentation

SiteAnalysis

The main site for this semester’s studio project was located in Teluk Intan which would be primarily divided into 3 sites, the River Cruise, the Medan Selera and the Batu Tenggek.

The site analysis process was divided evenly among the entire batch, with each major group required to make a website to display and convey information which had been gathered during site through the use of data and illustrations.

My main contribution was the entire design and layout of the website.

CulturalMapping

To better understand the context of the site itself, each team was required to observe and map out the various cultural features of the town of Teluk Intan.

In my case, we were selected to focus on the culinary scene in Teluk Intan by documenting and experiencing the food and restaurants scattered across the town.

The town mainly consists of 3 cuisines which are Indian, Malay and Chinese, with each having its own unique specialties.

To better express our findings, the information would be conveyed through a card game, known as Tunotan.

It is a card game similar to UNO where various foods and drinks are used as playing cards based on their color, which eventually results in the players having to go and try the end resulting cards.

Documentation

During the visit, I was personally in charge of the documentation and video production which would showcase the overall trip and experience of the site visit.

Pictures and videos were taken which would then later be compiled and shared in our website and also edited to produce a final cinematic video.

The following video was shot, edited and produced by myself.

Site Model Dissection Placemaking

SiteModel

The selected site for my group was the Batu Tenggek. A site model was to be constructed to better visualize the site’s context and surroundings to support the upcoming design process.

The site model was constructed in the 1:100 scale and was primarily made out of MDF boards with the additional usage of acrylic to illustrate the surrounding buildings.

Dissection

During my visit to the Batu Tenggek site, I was Intrigued with the Batu Tenggek itself which was a war memorial.

A seemingly obscure object in the form of a large stone somehow acted as a war memorial.

To better understand the war memorial, I researched into its history and produced a dissection of what I felt would represent the true story behind the memorial.

3 main layers were deducted from the research, with each layer attempting to reflect an important part of the memorial, including its emotions, history and poem.

Placemaking

Observing the problems on site, the program of placemaking was required to be done which would aim to design a place where the surrounding context and people would be able to experience the cultures and features which we have chosen to dissect in the previous part.

The final result would be an underground passageway which would connect all the 4 sections of the site through the junction, while relocating the Batu Tenggek to a place where it can be appreciated.

The passageway would then act as a functional asset for the locals while also maintaining its core design intention as a cultural space where the Batu Tenggek can be displayed and appreciated.

For The Fallen Board Model

ForTheFallen

To create a war memorial park which responds to the community and history of Teluk Intan, allowing locals and tourists to visit and experience the space to honor and remember the fallen soldiers who fought for Teluk Intan during WWI and WWII.
