The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is committed to nurturing talents who will serve the community as competent professionals and socially responsible leaders. To facilitate our students’ professional and personal development, the University has incorporated Work-Integrated Education (WIE) into our undergraduate curriculum as a mandatory component since 2005, engaging them in local and offshore internships. Over the years, WIE has proved to be instrumental in equipping our students with the capabilities needed for their chosen professions.
WIE has been an integral part of PolyU’s endeavour to nurture all-round professionals since 2005. Not merely does it promote the integration of academic learning with application in the workplace that assists students in advancing their professional skills, but, especially offshore WIE, further develops in them an international outlook through cultural immersion. The nurtured talents are all ready for the increasingly competitive business environment as well as for proactively contributing to the betterment of the global community.
In 2018/19, more than 1,200 PolyU students benefited from WIE by applying their classroom knowledge in an offshore real-world environment, widening their perspectives and gaining valuable experiences to grow their careers. They were able to do internships in 32 overseas countries and about 10 cities in the Mainland. Among them, about 60% were located in the Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road regions, where we see many opportunities ahead for the younger generations.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to our valued partners from a wide range of industries worldwide for backing PolyU’s dedication to the WIE initiative. Their strong support combined with our concerted effort has been collaboratively creating powerful synergy to foster PolyU students’ personal and career development.
This booklet showcases our students’ many fruitful WIE experiences that echo PolyU’s promise for education, namely “Opening Minds˙Shaping the Future”. I hope that forthcoming participants will be inspired to make the best use of WIE to develop their competences and broaden their horizons. I also take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to all our WIE industry partners who have provided precious workbased learning opportunities for our students, helping them to excel in their career pursuits in the years to come.
The success stories of this year’s WIE participants and the appreciation from their workplace supervisors recorded in this publication reaffirmed the value of WIE to our students, partners, and community. I look forward to an even greater future shaped by our holistic talents.

Fernando Steven HYUDINATA
BBA (Hons) in Financial Services Grant Thornton | Shenzhen, China At the company’s Advisory Department, my main responsibility was to conduct a performance evaluation of the use of government financial funds. For instance, I followed up a project with my colleagues on the greening of an area in Shenzhen. We visited various government departments to check up on financial documents to see whether the actual use of the annual financial funds was appropriate, and whether it aligned with the financial plan. Finally, we wrote a performance evaluation report to relevant government departments based on the findings. At the university, I used to treat assignments as burdens. During the internship, I just concentrated on how to handle the project professionally and to overcome every obstacle proactively. I also made humble suggestions at work, which would be appropriate to improve current procedures. This six-week internship has indeed changed my attitude towards work.
CHIEH Yan Lam Yuki BBA (Hons) in Accountancy Chang’an Bank | Xi’an, China
I was placed in the Business Development Department of Chang’an Bank and assigned to come up with quality services in line with the bank’s mission of “serving the countries along the Silk Road; serving Shaanxi to pursue excellence; serving SMEs to improve quality and efficiency; and serving urban and rural areas to support their development”. I was responsible for reviewing the financial conditions of companies, monitoring the repayment process, compiling reports of company backgrounds and business environment in the respective industries, and analysing their financial statements for the past few years.

This experience has helped me make more friends, build a good interpersonal relationship, and become more familiar with bank operations. Most importantly, I have gained workplace experience, which allowed me to realise that proactively asking questions and networking with colleagues could improve work efficiency. BEng (Hons) in Product Engineering with Marketing Platform E | Singapore Being able to work at this start-up has definitely been the most valuable experience of my life so far. Here at Platform E – an entrepreneurship ecosystem that nurtures entrepreneurs – my role was a research assistant researching on food tech start-ups in Singapore, interviewing CEOs, and preparing summaries of the interviews. Not until I took on this internship did I realise I am goal-oriented and a risk-taker. Whenever I was assigned new tasks, I felt like I was challenged, which drove me to try even harder. This journey has also taught me the true meaning of time management. My colleagues there told me that one second could make a big difference in the outcome of our work. The rapid pace at this start-up motivated me to improve my time management skills further. I am sure that this memorable experience will be helpful to my school life and career.

BBA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance The Omerta Group | London, UK My internship took place at The Omerta Group, a headhunting firm specialising in executive search and market intelligence services in the UK. It possesses a wide-spread client network covering hedge funds, electronic trading platforms, commodity trading houses, and private banks, which span across the US, Asia, and Europe. My responsibilities were data collection, database update, and talent search. Working at this company was a precious opportunity for me to explore myself. I discovered that I prefer interacting with clients to dealing with paperwork. I also realised that I should improve my soft skills for my future academic and career paths. It was my first time coming to London. Londoners were so friendly that they would give me a warm smile or greet me cheerfully. I even encountered a gentleman who said “Hi, gorgeous!” to me on my way to the place I stayed. Such heart-warming experiences are quite rare in Hong Kong or the Chinese mainland.

BBA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance Venture Connects LLC | Chicago, US Venture Connects LLC aims to connect investors with entrepreneurs through such strategies as providing platforms for business start-ups to pitch their company at many investors in one go, and, likewise, investors could identify many potential projects at once. My major duties were to perform financial analysis and contact potential clients – a great chance for me to improve both my soft skills such as communication skills and hard skills like data collection and video editing. I also assisted with a conference held in Chicago on 17 and 18 June, through which I was able to meet different people and learn from experts. In the conference project, I was assigned to invite guests, reach potential clients, and conduct investment analysis. These experiences have been really helpful to my career as well as personal development.

BBA (Hons) in Accountancy Everbright Securities | Shanghai, China I have completed a six-week internship at Everbright Securities in Shanghai, China recently. I worked as an assistant analyst who supported my supervisor in data analysis. Apart from collating data and disseminating information on WeChat, I was also required to give updates on daily news and announcements in the real estate industry, which was the most challenging task of all. To handle this task, I had to use a particular computer programme to monitor industry dynamics, take notes of industry-related news and policies, then deliver a summary of the gathered information to my supervisor. This internship let me realise the importance of both soft and hard skills in the workplace. I had been unable to choose between working or pursuing further studies after graduation. Thanks to this experience, I have decided to go for the latter in order to become a more professional and competent employee.
TANG Chi Hang
BSc (Hons) in Investment Science CITIC-Prudential Fund Management | Shanghai, China Basically, my duty was to handle funds settlement in accordance with the standard requirements and regulations accurately and efficiently. Such an experience has given me a valuable chance to explore the finance and banking industry of the Chinese mainland. I am glad that now I possess a good understanding of the operations of a fund management company. The close relationship between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong has been bringing so many great business opportunities. And since the financial market, working environment, and culture in Shanghai are completely different from Hong Kong’s, this WIE programme plays a vital role in connecting Hong Kong students with the Chinese mainland. I believe that it has enabled me to become a well-prepared employee in this industry, and laid a concrete foundation for my career in Hong Kong as well as in the Chinese mainland.

BSc (Hons) in Surveying Turner & Townsend | Beijing, China It has been an honour to work as a Project Management Intern at Turner & Townsend. This internship provided me a chance to engage in a large-scale office relocation project in Dalian. I worked closely with my colleagues to assist in the preparation of the tender document and cost comparison. I also attended the regular team meeting with the project group that was comprised of vendors, contractors, partners, and clients. Although I was only responsible for taking minutes, I am grateful to have joined the meeting and learned from their discussion on the project. Moreover, I was responsible for the liaison with bidders and the preparation of evaluation reports for the selection process. I was really lucky to have met a bunch of caring and friendly colleagues who were willing to explain everything to me, and a supervisor who had faith in my abilities. And the bond between my colleagues and me was strong. We would hang out after work and go sightseeing, letting me know more about the culture of Beijing.
BEng (Hons) in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development National Cheng Kung University | Tainan, Taiwan I assisted my supervisor’s research on the circular economy and provision of waste management plan including facility site visits. At the end of the internship, I gave a presentation on the latest recycling technologies such as the application of artificial intelligence. Not only did I learn about the development of intelligent waste collection facilities in Taiwan and worldwide, I also acquired knowledge about modelling software for waste management analysis. It has been a good chance for me to think about the key to Taiwan’s success in environmental protection. I am truly impressed by the efforts of the Taiwanese to achieve this goal. This internship has also pointed me in the direction for a career in designing environmental policies at Hong Kong enterprises. In sum, my journey in Taiwan was valuable and fruitful, and I would like t o re c o m m e n d t h i s W I E programme to all PolyU students.
PANG Wai Yi
BSc (Hons) in Surveying Rider Levett Bucknall | Auckland, New Zealand At Rider Levett Bucknall, I assisted with pre- and post-contract services for various projects including the construction of hospitals, schools, and apartments. I also helped with Ross 5D measuring for building elements such as piles, concrete structures, doors, windows, and power supply systems in accordance with the drawings. Information flows efficiently at the company through regular staff meetings. After working there for two months, I have become more independent and efficient at work. On the other hand, I love their friendly work culture such as relaxing dress code on “Happy Friday”. This experience is enlightening in that I have now a working understanding of how a project quantity surveyor works, which is vital to my career planning. Besides, quantity surveyors are welcome in other countries as construction projects are everywhere, so I may apply for jobs overseas in the future.

WONG Kin Fung
BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering National Cheng Kung University | Tainan, Taiwan Through the Taiwan WIE Programme, I have come to a deeper understanding of earthquake behaviours, job nature of a research assistant, and Taiwan cultures. At the Department of Civil Engineering, I worked as a research assistant supporting my supervisor’s research project in relation to computer modelling work. Our team focused on the research of seismic design for buildings and bridges. My tasks included investigating the properties of high-strength materials and carrying out bridge inspection. It was a good opportunity to collaborate with people from different backgrounds in the workplace. From this internship, I have learned that the UK-based codes of practice in Hong Kong are different from Taiwan’s, which are derived from the systems of the US and Japan. It also helped me realise that I am more interested in practical work than pursuing further studies in advanced technology.
YEUNG Chi Kit
BSc (Hons) in Surveying Rider Levett Bucknall | Pretoria, South Africa At Rider Levett Bucknall, I assisted in different tasks, which included comparing tenders and quotations, checking bending schedules, amending contracts, and preparing cost index model.
On the one hand, I was able to apply the knowledge learned at PolyU in the workplace, and on the other this working experience allowed me to know more technical terms used in documents and drawings, and understand contracts and agreements in South Africa. It was my honour to have assisted in the measurement work in a cross-office project on a data centre in which the entire South Africa team collaborated with the UK office.
YEUNG Hoi Ching Catherine BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management Mecanismo Ingenieria | Madrid, Spain Mecanismo Ingenieria is a structural engineering consultant firm t hat provides opt im al structural solutions to satisfy project needs while applying creativity in structural design, subsequent analysis, and construction development. My greatest accomplishment in my internship was engaging in the Spanish pavilion project at Expo 2020. I am glad to have been assigned to design the foundation and structure of the pavilion’s domes. It was a great honour that my employer eventually accepted my design and submitted it to the client. The work cultures in Spain and Hong Kong are very different. The structures of Hong Kong’s companies and organisations are highly hierarchical. On the other hand, when I was at Mecanismo Ingenieria, I felt like it was a big family as the employer and the employees had cultivated a friendly and harmonious working environment.
This internship has let me learn to become a professional quantity surveyor and step out of my comfort zone to experience the multi-facets of a workplace. Having worked in an unfamiliar environment also triggered me to consider a career outside Hong Kong as I love the working style in South Africa which emphasised work-life balance.

BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering Shanghai Electric | Shanghai, China Shanghai Electric focuses on providing solutions to energy generation. I was assigned to work as a technical engineer at the branch of the company namely Shanghai Electric Wind Power. My job duties included participating in a workshop with an R&D company from Denmark and joining the test validation project of a new electric motor pitch system. Meanwhile, I was responsible for translating documents such as a product requirement specification, which was related to the test equipment for the wind generation system from Siemens Wind Power. What I have learned from this six-week internship is that the keys to success are staying enthusiastic at work, cultivating the courage to face uncertainties, taking the initiative in assigned tasks, and forging good relationships with colleagues. Having these mindsets in the workplace will allow us to go beyond ourselves and achieve greater accomplishments in the future.
KWOK Yin Yuk
BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering Xi’an Jiaotong University | Xi’an, China Throughout this internship, I have learned to use 3-D printing software, which I found the know-how highly useful for my future career as a structural design engineer. I also took part in a 3-D printing competition which required me to optimise a component of an airplane to reduce weight while maintaining its strength, safety, and displacement. Even though I was assigned to the Car Mechanical Engineering Department to provide research assistance at Xi’an Jiaotong University, it was still a rewarding experience as the theme of the research project was to a considerable extent related to my discipline. It also gave me an insight into a researcher’s duties and challenges, thus helping me discover career choices other than being a mechanical engineer upon graduation.

BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, HKSARG | Hong Kong, China It has been a remarkable experience to work at the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department over the past two months. This opportunity allowed me to get a taste of the engineering industry, enhance my communication skills, acquire information on state-of-the-art technologies, and make new friends. I found the site visit to the “Hong Kong Children’s Hospital” project the most memorable because I was able to get first-hand information about its system operating principles and engineering-related difficulties. My supervisor also shared with me the details of the design and functions of certain facilities. Apart from technical exposure, this WIE programme was a great platform to interact with students from different fields of engineering. This enabled me to hone my communication skills, and the interactions among us also broadened my horizons.
LI Woon Yin
BSc (Hons) in Analytical Sciences for Testing and Certification Lodz University of Technology | Lodz, Poland I went to Lodz, one of the biggest cities in Poland, for my WIE internship. Unlike most of the WIE participants who worked at companies, I had the opportunity to work at the Institute of General Food Chemistry at the Lodz University of Technology. Our project team focused on the application of fluorescence spectroscopy in monitoring the folding-unfolding transition of protein. We also aimed to determine enzyme kinetics with fluorescence. As all the materials used in the experiments were prepared by ourselves, many calculations were required for different compounds in the corresponding concentration. This internship has strengthened my theoretical calculation skills. Besides, I have improved my experimental skills, especially pipetting and using the spectrometer. I believe I will be able to apply these practical skills in my future pursuit in this field. Work-Integrated Education 2018/19

What did you plan for your 2019 summer vacation? I took on an IAESTE summer internship at Componit, a company in the polymer industry that has a comprehensive production system to carry out thermoplastics compounding.
Beijing Zhonghangzhi Technology Co., Ltd. specialises in designing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for the military. It contributes to military aircraft development by applying unmanned aircraft technology in search, combat, and security operations.
BSc (Hons) in Analytical Sciences for Testing and Certification Componit, Lda. | Cartaxo, Portugal
Supervised by a technician, I was a laboratory assistant at the Quality Control Department who collected samples from the production line and conducted physical and mechanical analyses to ensure compliance with national standards. Working at this factory was very challenging because we always had to compete with time. One of my greatest accomplishments was doing daily analyses on my own. I had to handle several tasks simultaneously to make sure all samples were analysed on time. Also, I had to inject plastic granule into the injector and measure the physical and mechanical properties of the samples. I am particularly proud of it since I applied all the technical skills acquired at PolyU.
BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering Beijing Zhonghangzhi Technology Co., Ltd. | Beijing, China
In this placement, I was assigned to the Experiment Department of the Research Centre. My responsibility was to assist research officer to figure out the required parameters before designing the UAVs and installing the control systems. I participated in an experiment to test the motor’s inertia and find out the required duration using a three-wire pendulum. I also helped set up the experiment and calculate the duration of motor rotation. This opportunity enables me to gain a deeper understanding of how such a research could be conducted in different ways. I have learned some basic theories in related courses at the university. From this internship, I could keep abreast of some practical methods used in today’s technological industry.

My internship at Cathay Pacific’s Engineering Department at Bangkok Airport has been an extraordinary learning experience!
I am glad to have joined the International WIE 2019. I worked at Be More 3D in Valencia, Spain for my first internship. It is a technology start-up specialising in constructing buildings using 3-D printing technology. My tasks included designing a new extruder for the mobile 3-D printing machine, and manufacturing products using 3-D printing technology. It was indeed a short internship but I was able to master some technical know-how and the work of professional engineers.
BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering Cathay Pacific Airways | Bangkok, Thailand
My duty, in short, was line maintenance, which included conducting visual inspection, installing steering and hydraulic pins, checking the pressure and temperature of wheels and brakes, and inspecting cabin and cargo areas. It was also exciting to be a headset man to communicate with the cockpit from ground for aircraft departure. These tasks made me realise the importance of being a team player and assisting the team. This internship opportunity has changed the way I thought about the aviation industry, and I believe I have found a career path that suits both my interest and personal development. I really want to be a management trainee at an aviation company. I am glad that this internship has allowed me to become more prepared for working in this industry, and ready to embrace new challenges ahead.

My major duty was organising exhibitions with publicity officers. We went to public housing estates and promoted the cultures of ethnic minorities (EMs) to the residents. During a visit to an elderly home, the elderly shared their stories about EMs, such as a Nepalese who served as a Gurkha solider, or an Indian in the British Army like my grandpa. Being a Chindian, I am touched to know that EMs have a long-established connection with the history of Hong Kong. The most rewarding experience was that I discovered people in Hong Kong are interested to know about the cultures of EMs and willing to accept them as part of the city. To achieve the goal of racial harmony, I believe that a culturally inclusive environment should be cultivated to promote social integration and allow people from different backgrounds to live, learn, and grow together.

BA (Hons) in Chinese and Bilingual Studies Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, HKSARG | Hong Kong, China Working for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) – Animal Management (Development) Division/Education Unit (AMDD) has been like a dream come true. As a newbie to government services, I gained valuable exposure to the work culture and understanding of AFCD’s structure. As an animal lover, I fulfilled my dream of facilitating animal rights in Hong Kong by promoting their related welfare through publicity. This internship also let me re-evaluate my strengths, weaknesses, and career path. My daily tasks included translating leaflets, guidelines, and guidebooks, analysing questionnaire data, updating the lists of vet clinics and animal businesses, reviewing drafted contracts and websites, and providing logistics support for educational seminars. I have become more confident of translation and data analysis as my skills were well-polished after this summer, courtesy of the diverse opportunities offered by AMDD and meticulous language standard in the government. I am grateful for my mentors’ help.

BBA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance Treiner | Melbourne, Australia The company I worked for was Treiner, which provides professional coaching and training to football players and teams to maximise their potential. I was assigned to create a financial forecast for the income statement that would be used to apply for funding to support this start-up’s business development. When the CEO and Co-Founder delegated this task to me, I knew it would be way more difficult than the case competition I had joined before. Nevertheless, I accepted the challenge, and started to learn by reading books and online materials. Eventually, I delivered a quality financial forecast and received positive feedback from my employer. The employer said that my professionalism in financial services was remarkable. I could make an immediate contribution to the company by having professional skills and knowledge acquired from my programme subjects such as Business Finance and Investment, which have obviously laid a solid foundation for my career in finance.

BSc (Hons) in Food Safety and Technology The Griffin’s Food Company | Auckland, New Zealand The Griffin’s Food Company is renowned for its chips, biscuits, nut bars, and various kind of snacks in New Zealand. Working as a Quality Technologist intern for six weeks in the Quality Assurance Department has enriched my knowledge by gaining in-depth insights into the business of food quality assurance. During the internship, we were required to wear hairnets to prevent hair from contaminating the food, full protective gear to cover our body, and earmuffs to protect our ears from manufacturing machine noise. This internship enabled me to have a better understanding of how a Quality Assurance Department works at a food company. I also acquired important skills such as handling complaints, performing regular checking of machines, and maintaining hygiene standards. Besides, this experience had a great influence on making my career plan. I never had an interest in business management, but now I am considering to pursue a career in this field.

Broad Discipline of Hotel and Tourism Management Relais & Chateaux Chaptel Hangzhou Hotel | Hangzhou, China As a year one student, instead of joining summer activities, I applied for an internship as I wanted to know more about the hospitality industry. I had the opportunity to work at Chaptel Hotel in Hangzhou, which is a unique luxury hotel adjacent to the West Lake.
It was challenging at first as I only knew the basics of hotel operations. So I tried my best to adapt to the new environment and learn the required skills within a short time. I can still recall the days when I started to perform by myself the assigned tasks like checking customers in, escorting them to their rooms, and handling their complaints. After the internship, I have become much more mature. I realised that providing quality customer service does not only mean meeting customers’ needs, but is significant for building a positive company image.
My goal of joining the Russia WIE Programme was to acquire in-depth marketing skills and knowledge. I would also like to learn how to meet customers’ expectations effectively in order to create value for a company. I worked at the Grabli Restaurant Chain. Grabli restaurant owns factories, pastry shops and culinary schools which provide banquet, catering, and delivery services. It is a pioneer in implementing the concept of free flow in a restaurant, where diners can move freely among different items such as cold dishes, hot dishes, desserts, and drinks. As a marketing intern, I assisted in implementing marketing events. I conducted researches with my teammates. We would visit various restaurants and give comments on restaurant settings and atmosphere.

BEng (Hons) in Electronic and Information Engineering edison.ai | Tokyo, Japan Scan a QR code, choose what you want, and the items will be automatically billed. This is the web application’s prototype of the fully-automated store I created at edison.ai. Using JavaScript to lay a foundation of both the front-end and back-end of the web application was my greatest accomplishment during my WIE internship. JavaScript had been relatively new to me. Thankfully, I managed to learn this language in time to complete the assigned project.
Nevertheless, mastering the required soft skills in the workplace was a bigger challenge. I realised that listening to others and respecting different opinions could help us refine our ideas, and thereby leading to a better outcome. After all, it is important to work as a team, not separately. This is especially true in the engineering field.

BBA (Hons) in Management Lianlian Pay | Hangzhou, China
It is important for a business student like me to be equipped with hands-on experience, especially in marketing and management as theories should go hand in hand with application. This WIE internship has offered me a chance to apply what I had learned to the field of human resources management. My six-week internship took place at Lianlian Pay, the fourth largest non-banking party payment service provider in the Chinese mainland. As a recruitment intern, my duties included screening CVs, conducting phone interviews, and providing ad hoc support to many activities like training courses. This really helped because having work experience in the management field would be crucial. Plus I had the chance to reevaluate the direction of my future career. My life in Hangzhou also enabled me to immerse myself in the culture, which was new and unique to me. One major difference is e-commerce, something so essential there that without which no one can live an easy life.

Success in the workplaces needs more than just academic results. The most important thing I have learned at Sina is attitude: be on time, be responsible, be proactive, and be modest. Also, this internship has showed me the direction of my future career. I have been hoping to conduct research on big data and AI. After knowing more about the future development in this field, I have become more determined to further my studies in machine learning and image processing. Work-Integrated Education 2018/19

I worked as an intern at Ebury, a fastest-growing fintech company in Europe. It has 22 offices across the world with its headquarters in London. As a web developer there, I engaged in two web development projects, through which the chief technical officer and team leader could evaluate the team’s performance, hence deciding whether to expand or restructure the team, or to add one. I had never imagined myself working as a developer because I always wished to be an electronic engineer. After having a taste of this job, now I am interested in coding. This internship has also boosted my confidence and helped me explore my strengths. I am looking forward to working for Ebury again as it provides a platform for the staff to learn new skills. For instance, if an employee is interested in learning a new programming language, the company will assign him/ her a relevant project to develop the skill. Work-Integrated Education 2018/19

BSc (Hons) in Computing JSTI Group | Nanjing, China This summer, I worked at the smart city institute at JSTI Group, in which I put my effort into facilitating various projects of different companies as I was assigned to the Project Management. We provided customers with IT solutions to ensure timely delivery of their projects. These tasks enabled me to learn to use Sophon, an AI programme for big data processing. With Sophon, I created a Hadoop cluster platform and developed a word count MapReduce programme.
The Administrative Service Summer Internship Programme 2019 has offered me a two-month internship at the Innovation and Technology Commission to know more about the role of an Administrative Officer (AO). One notable duty was to assist in the implementation of the Reindustrialisation Technology Training Programme. Through conducing a policy research on technology funding schemes and training programmes in relation to Industry 4.0 in different countries, I was able to facilitate the review and revision of the current local schemes. I have also improved my research skills and learned the writing style commonly used in the government. Additionally, many visits were arranged for the interns, through which I was able to know more about the functions and roles of the government from different perspectives.
I used to dream of working as a web developer because website design and programming were my primary interests. This internship, however, has made me realise that computing engineer would also be a good career choice, as evidenced by the lastest technology trends. The more I learned about big data and machine learning, the bigger my interest in this discipline. I have decided to become a computing engineer.
AO is a challenging yet interesting position. I feel that this internship has been a precious opportunity for me to think about whether I am suitable for joining the government in the future.

I provided content editing and writing services for many projects, gave support to different events, handled customers’ queries and complaints, and made suggestions on improving the system and management. Some of the tasks were challenging as they were new to me, but I did learn a lot during the process. I received compliments from my supervisor for my working attitude and efficiency. Meanwhile, she hoped I could be more confident when presenting my ideas. I am grateful for her sincere feedback which could help me become a better employee. During the internship, I was assigned to investigate the transportation systems in Tainan, Chiayi, and Yunlin. The goal was to promote the use of public transportation for reducing environmental pollution and traffic congestion. To this end, I conducted a questionnaire survey and data analysis using computer programmes such as Stata and AMOS. To prepare myself for this project, I reviewed the previous data on the use and costs of public transport, and studied statistical hypothesis tests including the chi-square test. I also interviewed passers-by on the street. Eventually, I completed my task on time and realised that face-to-face interviews could ensure quality results. On another note, the university allows working at home during office hours via remote computing while working at the research office after office hours. I like this practice as I could concentrate more on my work.

As soon as I figured out that the Civil Service Bureau (CSB)’s internship programme for non-ethnic Chinese university students assigned me to the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) Air Traffic Management Division (ATMD), I was instantly lost for words due to sheer excitement. It has always been my lifelong dream to work for CAD. The experience of getting hands-on experience at the governing body of the aviation industry has been one of a kind. I met several top officials from both CAD and CSB. Gaining recognition from senior officials certainly fostered my interest in going further in this industry. I could not have achieved this without the support from my colleagues and supervisor throughout this whole journey. The most rewarding thing would be developing connections, not only with colleagues but people in the industry. I would truly like to thank CAPS for nominating me to join this internship, and CSB and CAD for offering me this chance to join the industry.

My WIE goal was to understand better the actual operations and systematic goods handling of a large corporation. Working at Shun Hing Logistics Co. Ltd. for two months has helped me further explore my career choices. I worked on various projects, including warehouse standardisation and digitalisation projects that aimed to improve the operational process and the existing workflow efficiency. I had to read through and collate operational documents such as work instructions and warehouse bin location reports, as well as identify outstanding items for troubleshooting. This process helped me know more about my strengths and weaknesses, and become a more detail-minded person. Besides work, Shun Hing organises various activities like Olympic Day and visiting the elderly. It let me understand the importance of corporate social responsibility, and I have been motivated to get involved in community services. I thoroughly enjoyed my three-month internship at Kimberly-Clark and now I have much hands-on experience in the Fast-moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry under my belt. As a marketing intern, I was responsible for tasks related to different product brands, such as Kotex, Kleenex, Scott, and Andrex. My supervisors allowed me to make decisions by myself and took my suggestions seriously. I was flattered, but I truly appreciate their confidence in me. It was an eye-opening experience to work at a multinational corporation for the first time. This company has great cultures and values, as well as a caring working environment. There are various special themes every Friday, such as “Fruity Friday”, “Jelly Friday”, or “Work with Kids”. Its design concept is based on a timeless minimalistic approach and aims to re-introduce traditional designs to modern lifestyles. I applied for an overseas internship because I believe that in the modern logistics system, work spans across different locations. Working in a team also requires a strong connection among group members. As an ISE student, I am capable of building 3-D models using SoildWorks. I worked with the design team to complete the rendering and mould of different models. I cherish the seamless cooperation between me and my teammates. PlayBrain is a marketing agency for gaming companies in Japan and around the world. As a design intern, I was instructed to provide design service for a new fashion brand which aimed to build a bridge between high fashion and underground gamers. I assisted with designing the logo and giving ideas about the art direction and marketing strategy to the brand. Logo design was not my strong suit, so I tried to learn by appreciating various designs and trying different design approaches. I am glad that I eventually got the job done! I learned a lot from my colleagues. For starters, a professional designer should pay extra attention to small things. They also taught me how to understand clients’ standpoint and lead them to see from different perspectives. These insights are useful for my future career. This WIE trip has really been a rewarding learning experience, and it is wonderful to have met so many great colleagues!

BA (Hons) in English Studies for the Professions InvestHK – Italy | Milan, Italy WIE undoubtedly has facilitated my transition from being a student to a well-prepared employee. My internship in Milan was a good opportunity for me to find my passion and decide on my career direction. I worked at the representative office of InvestHK in Italy. Its major business is to develop active business connections between Hong Kong and Italian companies. During my internship period, my main duty was to look for potential business partnerships through contacting Hong Kong trade associations via emails or phones. My colleagues were so helpful and caring, making it very easy for me to tackle the assigned tasks and adapt to their working culture. I really enjoyed the working atmosphere in Italy, which is completely different from Hong Kong’s. We would have a “coffee break” at half past ten every morning, having snacks and a small cup of Italian coffee – “Expresso”. CHONG Wai Ki Vicky BBA (Hons) in Management Legislative Council, HKSARG | Hong Kong, China
The six-week internship at the Legislative Council Secretariat has provided me a great chance to understand its function and the local legislative operation. I was attached to the news division and library division. In the news division, I assisted in the preparation of daily news and speech script for the President. I realised that it is essential to be responsive and flexible when dealing with various situations. The library division plays a supporting role in council meetings. My colleagues taught me the research process and the circulation of books. It was great to interact with the senior officials and get guidance and advice on my career path from them. Besides, I had first-hand experience of observing what would transpire at a Financial Committee meeting. There were also various activities such as tea gathering organised for interns. I met friends from other universities and gained more exposure to different cultures.
LEUNG Ho Fung
Broad Discipline of Business The Hong Kong Council of Social Service - Social Enterprise Business Centre | Hong Kong, China
The Citi-HKCSS Community Intern Program 2019 offered me hands-on experience in the “My Concept Event Management” initiative under a social enterprise namely Christ Social Service Division of The Church of United Brethren. I made use of my knowledge in marketing and human resources as well as event management skills to organise fundraising activities that aimed to enhance public awareness. Besides, both the orientation camp and induction programme held by the organisation allowed me to network with people, have a better understanding of social service development, and learned about the problems of social disparity and ageing population in Hong Kong. I thoroughly enjoyed working for this organisation where people gave support and shared knowledge in both social service and business aspects. Other than gaining new knowledge, it also enhanced my communication skills and understanding of social problems in Hong Kong, thus inspiring me to contribute more to local society.

BA (Hons) in English Studies for the Professions King’s College | Auckland, New Zealand I worked as an assistant at King’s College, Auckland in New Zealand. It is a private high school which attaches great importance to its students’ all-round development. Serving in the Marketing and Development Department, my responsibilities included handling students’ enquiries, and managing data, documents and the archive room. This internship has let me realised that I had weak social skills. At first, I was too shy to talk to my colleagues. Now I understand that it is very important to step out of my comfort zone and try to be more sociable.
I have become more aware of my career choices, too. It was wrong for me to focus on academic achievements only. In order to have a fruitful learning experience, we should grab our chance to engage in more activities to improve ourselves and become a well-rounded employee in the future.

BBA (Hons) in Global Supply Chain Management Department of Justice, HKSARG | Hong Kong, China I am grateful to have worked as an intern in the Information Technology Management Unit (ITMU) of the Department of Justice (DoJ). This eight-week internship let me gain technical skills and working experience at a governmental organisation. During the internship, I worked on the “Windows 10 Migration Project” that handles the amendments of schedule records. My main tasks included preparing Solid-state Drives deployment list and labels, User Acceptance Testing (UAT) form, Windows 10 training evaluation questionnaire, and webpage design to facilitate the upgrade of the operating system. I appreciate the team-oriented culture of this department as my colleagues were very supportive. They were willing to spend time teaching me essential computer skills, providing feedback, and sharing their experiences with me. They also invited me to join the team meeting and lunch gathering. In sum, this internship has enriched my skills and knowledge, and helped me realise my career goal and become a more mature person.

LI Man Yung Emily
BA (Hons) in English Studies for the Professions Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Seoul Office | Seoul, Korea I am honoured to have been given the chance to work as a summer intern at the Seoul Office of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) for eight weeks. My major duties were related to administration and operations, and I also took on the role of personal assistant to the Director of Korea. The assigned tasks included creating online materials to assist Hong Kong companies in entering the Korean market; organising events such as seminars, workshops, and networking platforms to promote Hong Kong; and liaising with Korean trade organisations and other government departments. Communication skills were truly essential. It was indeed both thrilling and challenging that I had got to put my Korean knowledge into practice. This Korea WIE experience has had a great impact on my personal growth as it allowed me to think deeply about what I would like to pursue after graduation. I am most grateful to my supervisor and colleagues for the opportunities they had given me to try new things in the workplace.
WAN Chi Lam
BA (Hons) in Language and Speech Sciences Georgia Tech Tianjin University Shenzhen Institute | Shenzhen, China I worked as a project coordinator at the Institute, and was assigned to plan a trip to Foshan for their freshmen. Since I was not familiar with simplified Chinese, it took me some time to research on the local tourist spots, accommodation, and transportation. I was also instructed to translate college policies, and the main obstacle was technical terminologies. The entire internship was like an intensive pre-employment training, except it was real-life work. I tried my best to enhance my language, research, and computer skills in a very short period of time. Not to mention other essential workplace abilities such as organisation and teamwork skills, and a deeper understanding of the culture in the Chinese mainland.

As a Language and Speech Sciences student, one of my career choices is to work at a college. So this offshore internship has allowed me to know more about college operations, and consider working outside Hong Kong after graduation. Work-Integrated Education 2018/19
Winston WONG
BEng (Hons) in Electronic and Information Engineering Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto | Toronto, Canada My internship took place at Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, a multicultural hub which promotes diversity, inclusiveness, and ethnic harmony in Canada. As an information technology intern, I was assigned to handle website creation and maintenance, network switches configuration, network infrastructure overhaul, IT support, and the like. I also played the role as a production team member who set up audio equipment for the company’s major events such as Canada Day Drumming Event and Summer Festival. My social skills were enhanced through working with different people during the events. Although I found the company to be quite hierarchical, my supervisor and other senior executives were willing to work closely with their subordinates and treat us like friends. We were also encouraged to voice out our opinions at meetings. I am pleased that such a workplace culture has made me feel comfortable at work.
ZHAO Xiaohan
BSc (Hons) in Investment Science Queen’s University Belfast | Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK My internship took place at the School of Psychology of Queen’s University Belfast. My duty was to conduct an experiment to compare the estimates of multi-finger force deficit obtained using two sets of apparatus, and determine the degree of correspondence. From setting up, calibrating, and testing devices to conducting the experiment, analysing the data, and making suggestions, the whole process was completely new to me. I ran into many problems but managed to overcome, such as finding ways to replace a damaged force transducer on a circuit board. At the same time, though, I acquired practical skills and knowledge from the process as well as the professors and my colleagues. It is equally precious that I met different people who inspired me a lot and provided me with a wider perspective on life and the world. It was delightful to have connected with so many friends from various countries. Work-Integrated Education 2018/19
