is year has seen the realization of an incredible effort to bring a unique new institution to Chicago’s cultural landscape. e Pritzker Military Library is the sum of a shared belief that we are honor-bound to preserve the stories of the men and women who defend our freedom. Some of the people who were involved in that effort will speak from the stage tonight, and many others are in the audience; a few are now engaged in other efforts and cannot be with us tonight. Wherever they may be, I am grateful to each and every person who saw our cause as a worthy one and chose to take part over the last several years. Tonight, we honor a longtime friend, Peder Dahlberg, for his work on the new home of the Pritzker Military Library – and his many years of generosity toward our efforts to honor the Citizen Soldier, both at the original library and the exciting new facility the library now occupies. We also honor the literary accomplishments of two authors who were previously honored for their service as Citizen Soldiers. Karl Marlantes and Carlo D’Este both received the Bronze Star, among other decorations, for the time they spent with boots on the ground in Vietnam. eir writing bears rich evidence of that experience. Marlantes takes us deep into the jungles of Vietnam, standing alongside a young lieutenant as he learns how to lead other young men in battle; D’Este guides us behind closed doors in Europe, gazing over the shoulders of generals as they chart the course of war. As a nation, we need the stories these men tell. Without stories like these, how can we understand the role of the Citizen Soldier in the preservation of our democratic society? How can we comprehend the sacrifices that the men and women of the Armed Services make on our behalf ? With your continued support, the Pritzker Military Library will be home to these stories for many years to come.

It has been such a pleasure for us to watch the realization of Jim’s dream to build a military library. Jim had the foresight to preserve significant books, images, and artifacts and create a bridge to a new generation of our armed services, their families, and the general public for education and discussion. at Jim’s dream has now become a new, vibrant center adjacent to Millennium Park is, quite simply, extraordinary. We gather on the eighth anniversary of this young institution to reflect on the success of the Pritzker Military Library from a dream to the reality it has become. e months ahead hold the promise of a bright future for the library, the staff of the various organizations, and the work underway at their new home in the Monroe Building. All around the Palmer House tonight, you will see evidence of what has been achieved and the pride everyone has put into the new library. We can all share in that pride. To all those who help make this mission prosper and this event possible, thank you for supporting one of Chicago’s newest cultural treasures. We are all grateful and hope that you have a wonderful evening!

YEAR IN REVIEW Welcome to the 2011 Liberty Gala! This evening, I’d like to share with you some of the great things that have been happening over the last year at the Pritzker Military Library. We closed the doors at 610 N. Fairbanks with Salvatore A. Giunta, the first living Medal of Honor recipient for actions in Afghanistan – and we opened the doors at 104 S. Michigan with a series of memorable events, from a stirring lecture by Rick Atkinson, recipient of the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award…to the sights and sounds of Afghanistan from journalist Sebastian Junger…and the unforgettable stories of Medal of Honor recipients James E. Livingston and Walter D. Ehlers. Inside the new library, there’s more for visitors to see than ever before. A remarkable gift from Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams, one of our special guests tonight, laid the foundation for the Medal of Honor Gallery, a tribute to the courage and valor of America’s greatest military heroes. Personal materials from the service of many other Medal of Honor recipients including Allen J. Lynch, another of tonight’s special guests, complete the story…one that you simply have to see to believe. Visitors have also enjoyed exhibits dedicated to Citizen Soldiers from every branch of the Armed Services…and, currently on display, World War II photography from the archives of the Associated Press. Of course, it’s only fitting to highlight the amazing growth in our collection, since Colonel Pritzker began the library with his family’s collection of books. I’m proud to report donations like the brow banner of the U.S.S. Chicago, given by the captain and crew of that vessel…and uniforms, papers, and other items from the service of U.S. Army veteran Frank T. Stover. Staff members have also begun to record stories of service through the new oral history program, a gift by Karen Pritzker and Michael K. Vlock in honor of Tuskegee Airman Coleman Holt. I’d like to thank the authors, guests, staff, and volunteers who have helped create some truly special experiences for visitors to the Pritzker Military Library over the last year. Above all, I’d like to thank you – because none of this would have been possible without your support.

Special Guests Hershel “Woody” Williams • Medal of Honor Recipient His company had been decimated after two days of intense fighting on Iwo Jima. But when the twenty-one year old Acting Sergeant saw the American flag rise over Mount Suribachi, he seized the moment. Williams strapped on a flamethrower and weaved through enemy fire to destroy a machine-gun pillbox. Williams spent the next four hours racing from enemy position to position, wreaking havoc, stopping only to grab new flamethrowers as each ran out of fuel. At last, the enemy line was broken and the Marines were able to advance. Williams earned the Medal of Honor for his heroic service on Iwo Jima. After leaving active duty, he became a lay minister in his church and a chaplain for his fellow Medal recipients. Today, he is Chaplain Emeritus of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

Allen J. Lynch • Medal of Honor Recipient On December 15th, 1967, Lynch and the rest of his platoon were on their way back for a well-deserved rest when they were called in to support another company that had been outnumbered by an enemy force. Under intense fire, Lynch carried three wounded soldiers to safety, and single-handedly defended them against the advancing enemy force for several hours. His quick-thinking and disregard for his own safety were vital in saving those lives, but his fight on behalf of his fellow soldiers did not end on the battlefield. After leaving active duty, Lynch worked for several years in the Veterans Administration, advocating for increased benefits for disabled veterans, and served most recently as chief of the Veterans Rights Bureau for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. Now retired, he continues that commitment as a volunteer with the Vietnam Veterans of America and does ministry work with the Lake County Jail.

Special Dramatic Performance The Steppenwolf Theatre Company is a Chicago-based international performing arts institution committed to ensemble collaboration and artistic risk through its work with its permanent ensemble, guest artists, partner institutions, and the community. Steppenwolf has redefined the landscape of acting and performance by spawning a generation of America’s most gifted artists. Founded in 1976 as an ensemble of nine actors, Steppenwolf has grown into an internationally renowned company of theatre artists whose talents include acting, directing, playwriting, filmmaking, and textual adaptation.

Rob Stafford Host Rob Stafford is the anchor of NBC5 News at 5PM, 6PM, and 10PM. He anchors with Allison Rosati on all three newscasts. Rob joined NBC5 News in Chicago in 2007, moving to the main anchor position in 2009. Prior to joining NBC 5, Stafford was a correspondent for the award-winning NBC newsmagazine, Dateline NBC. Before that, he anchored the morning newscast at WFTV-TV in Orlando and founded the station's award winning investigative unit. His two-year investigative series on hotel crime in Orlando exposed serious security problems and led to a grand jury investigation. A native of New Hampshire, Stafford has been honored with four Emmy Awards in the Chicago and Florida markets and received six Emmy nominations as well. He is also the recipient of four Associated Press awards, an Iris Award and an RTNDA Award. His Dateline report on hazing in the United States Marine Corps received a national news Emmy in 1997. In 2000, he received an Edward R. Murrow Award for his Dateline investigation into racial profiling.

PEDER DAHLBERG FOUNDER’S AWARD A native of the North Side of Chicago, Peder Dahlberg is the son of sea-minded parents – his father Olaf served in the Coast Guard during World War II, and his mother Marion was a lifeguard captain and lookout on Chicago’s North Avenue Beach. After graduating from Indiana University, where he was the Captain of the 1971 NCAA Championship Swim Team, Dahlberg competed in the first sanctioned athletic competition between the USA and the Deutsche Demokratische Republik in East Germany since World War II. His USA team won 24 of 27 events. While serving as an Olympic Swimming Coach for Spain, he met his future wife, Gloria Balague of Barcelona. His work with Peder Dahlberg & Sons General Contractors led to historic restorations of important Chicago buildings such as the Rookery (Burnham & Root), the Emil Bach House (Frank Lloyd Wright), and the Monroe Building (Holabird & Roche). Dahlberg also worked on both the first Pritzker Military Library, which opened in 2003, and the new library, which opened to the public earlier this year.

KARL MARLANTES WILLIAM E. COLBY AWARD As a young man, Karl Marlantes was highly decorated for his service in Vietnam. More than three decades later, his novel inspired by those experiences, Matterhorn, has received the 2011 William E. Colby Award. Matterhorn draws from Marlantes’ service as an officer in the Marine Corps. The year is 1969, and 2nd Lt. Waino Mellas has been assigned to lead a rifle platoon of forty Marines as their company builds a fire support base in the mountains near the border of Laos. His platoon is full of young men who’d been at war for months and some for several years; Mellas, fresh out of college, is overwhelmed by his responsibilities as a leader and the dense jungle landscape that surrounds them. As casualties mount, Mellas and his platoon fight through a series of conflicting missions – they are ordered to abandon their newly-built base, then ordered to take it back from the North Vietnamese Army, and then ordered to abandon it again. While their commanding officers fight the war from a distance, little aware of how their decisions affect men on the ground, Mellas and his platoon endure sweltering heat, monsoon rains, racial tension, and a growing sense of futility; they struggle to understand and trust each other, and they forge powerful bonds that will overcome fear, doubt, and loss. Karl Marlantes received the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals for valor, two Purple Hearts, and ten air medals for his service in Vietnam. A graduate of Yale and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, he lives in rural Washington.

The Colby Award recognizes a first work of fiction or non-fiction that has made a major contribution to the understanding of military history, intelligence operations or international affairs. William E. Colby was the author of Lost Victory: A Firsthand Account of America’s Involvement in Vietnam and Honorable Men: My Life in the CIA. A decorated veteran, he served with the OSS in World War II. From 1951– 1962, Colby served with the American embassies in Stockholm, Rome, and Saigon. He was Ambassador and Deputy to the Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam from 1968 to 1971. Colby served as Director of the CIA from 1973-76. The William E. Colby Military Writers’ Symposium is held annually at Norwich University.

CARLO D’ESTE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Carlo D’Este is the recipient of the 2011 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing. D'Este’s first book, Decision in Normandy (1983), offered a fresh perspective on the leadership of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery and the Allied landings after D-Day. With Bitter Victory (1988) and Fatal Decision (1991), covering the battles for Sicily and Rome respectively, D’Este further established himself as an authoritative voice in the field of World War II scholarship. More recently, D’Este has turned his attention to the lives of major World War II leaders, delivering the acclaimed biographies Patton: A Genius for War (1995); Eisenhower: A Soldier's Life, 1890-1945 (2002); and Warlord: A Life of Winston Churchill at War, 1874-1945 (2008). Since the publication of Warlord, D’Este has delivered a series of lectures on Winston Churchill at the Pritzker Military Library, the Lemnitzer Lecture at the Association of the U.S. Army, the General Raymond E. Mason, Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series on World War II at the National World War II Museum, New Orleans, and the 2010 Crosby Kemper Lectureship at the Winston Churchill Memorial and Library at Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri. He also serves as Consulting Historian and Advisory Board Member for Armchair General magazine. A retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel with service in Vietnam, D'Este has received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, and Commendation Medal for his military service. He is a co-founder of the William E. Colby Military Writers’ Symposium, based at Norwich University, and currently serves as its executive director. D’Este is also a long-time elected trustee of the Mashpee, Massachusetts Public Library and the former president of the Friends of the Kreitzberg Library at Norwich University. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife, Shirley.

PRITZKER MILITARY LIBRARY LITERATURE AWARD FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN MILITARY WRITING The Pritzker Military Library Literature Award was established to honor a living author for a body of work that has enriched the understanding of American military history. The recipient’s contributions may be academic, non-fiction, fiction or a combination of the three, and their work should embody the values of the Pritzker Military Library, which focuses on the Citizen Soldier in the preservation of democracy. In selecting the recipient of this year’s award, a national panel of historians, writers, and other individuals related to the study of American history and heritage reviewed nominations submitted by publishers, agents, booksellers, and other professional literary organizations. Our sincere thanks to all those who helped and guided this process:

JAMES DIETZ The Pritzker Military Library is fortunate to have a good friend and generous supporter in James Dietz, the award-winning military artist. Our collection includes more than 70 pieces of his work, and he was among the first artists to be showcased in our gallery. In 2007, Dietz provided original art for the medallion presented to recipients of the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing. In 2010, to celebrate the new Pritzker Military Library, Dietz was commissioned to paint a new version of that powerful image, which depicts Citizen Soldiers from three eras of American history.
