GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

On behalf of the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago, bienvenidos, welcome to the virtual edition of the 36th Chicago Latino Film Festival. Held annually since 1985, the Chicago Latino Film Festival is nationally recognized as the largest and best Latino film festival in the U.S. We live in uncertain times. And yet, artists worldwide have found ways to share their creativity, their vision, their stories with audiences who seek not only entertainment but nourishment at a time when most have been forced to live in isolation. Times like these also show what organizations like ours are capable of and this new virtual direction we have taken is full of possibilities. The world may not be the same after this health crisis is over, but we will always have the movies and music and theater to comfort and inspire us.

2

This year, the Chicago Latino Film Festival will present 45 feature-length films and 38 shorts from Latin America, Spain, Portugal and the United States. We are truly excited about this year’s program as it features new films by such masters as Pablo Larraín, Gabriel Mascaro and Juan José Campanella as well as a significant number of films by first time directors. This is due thanks to the hard work of our Executive Director Pepe Vargas, his programming team and the Festival’s many friends across Latin America, the United States, Portugal and Spain who alert us as to potential titles that could play well in our city. So please join us for this two week celebration of Latino cinematic culture. Witness, from the comfort of your home, with friends and family, the variety of styles and themes that have made Latino cinema a force to be reckoned with this century. John Alvarado Chair, Board of Directors International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago

GREETINGS FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

¡BIENVENIDOS!... Welcome to the Virtual Edition of the 36th Chicago Latino Film Festival. Not so long ago, you could only watch films from Latin America, Spain, Portugal or made by U.S. Latinos at festivals like ours and, occasionally, at art movie houses. Today, thanks to the proliferation of streaming services, you now have access not only to the latest releases but also to those classic Ibero-American films that paved the way for the current generation of filmmakers. We joined the streaming revolution last year with the launch of CLFFMÁS, which features a carefully curated collection of shorts and now features from past editions of the Festival. But never, even in our wildest dreams, did we imagine our entire Festival would be held virtually. We were hoping to return in the late Summer/ early Fall when we announced the postponement of our Festival back in March as a result of the state of Illinois’ and the city of Chicago’s orders to suspend all events of a thousand or more attendees to stop the spread of COVID-19. We even explored the possibility of coming back as both an in-person and virtual event. But, in the end, given the continuing uncertainty, we decided to go fully virtual. These are challenging times for arts organizations across the world; but we strongly believe that the arts provide comfort, solace, even hope in moments of crisis. They lift us up, they inspire us, they connect us to our history and make us look forward to a brighter future. Even though I will greatly miss that human interaction that is such a vital part of the Festival experience, I am also excited about the opportunity a virtual edition of our Festival offers in sharing these stories with a larger audience. The possibilities are endless. We are happy to finally be able to present this robust program of 44 features and 38 shorts. From Gabriel Mascaro’s critically acclaimed Divine Love and Pablo Larraín’s Ema to the works of such first-time feature filmmakers as Carlos Lenin (The Dove and the Wolf), Mónica Mancero (Turquoise Blue) and Ana Bustamente (Asphyxia), audiences will have a chance to enjoy, from their comfort of their own homes, some of the most-talked about films of the last year. But no better film exemplifies our mission to showcase the latest trends in Latino cinema than Days of Light. This anthology film not only introduces audiences to six up-and-coming filmmakers from Central America but throws a much deserved spotlight on a region whose film output is at times overlooked. Last year, we lost a champion of cinema and a dear friend: Facets Multimedia founder Milos Stehlik. Milos was there for us from day one, hosting our Festival and Reel Film Club series at Facets, encouraging us with his advice and even interviewing our visiting filmmakers on his weekly film segment in WBEZ-FM’s much missed program Worldview. More than a friend, I consider Milos a mentor. I invite you to read director Gregory Nava’s reminiscences of Milos on page 9. We look forward to a time when we will gather together, at a movie theater or under the stars in a park somewhere in the city, to enjoy the wonderful stories our filmmakers tell and continue telling. We look forward to bringing back such programs as our Reel Film Club and the Film in the Park series. We look forward to moving ahead with our plans of turning our annual Latino Music Festival into a series of concerts throughout the year. We are confident that this too shall pass! To our sponsors, our volunteers, our staff, our filmmakers, our board of directors and, most of all, you…THANK YOU! Pepe Vargas Founder & Executive Director International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago

Yağmur Genç is a freelance graphic designer and a student of Visual Communication Design at Medipol University in Istanbul. Last year she won the Bronze Prize in the Next Generation category of Nikon’s annual photo contest for her image titled “Lonely Girl,” and third prize in Contrado’s bottle design contest. Designed as an isolated frame from a film strip, Genç’s colorfully dreamlike poster depicts a woman staring upwards towards an eye, surrounded by flowers and vegetation. “Every movie is actually a journey. All the films we watch introduce us to different worlds and perspectives. In all the movies I have watched since my childhood, I thought that the audience was actually a part of the movie. I wanted to show this idea in my design. The female figure represents the audience and the eye the connection between the audience and the movie. I also aimed to achieve a different perspective by using warm and cold tones together. The flowers on the edge of the banner reflect the multi-color of Latin American culture,” explained Genç.

TRIBUTE TO MILOS STEHLIK

REMEMBERING MILOS STEHLIK FOUNDER OF FACETS MULTIMEDIA By Gregory Nava “All great ideas are simple – here’s my idea – if evil people can join together to achieve what they want – why can’t good people join together to achieve what they want.” These immortal words of Leo Tolstoy exemplify the vision and life of a truly great man: Milos Stehlik, who dedicated his life to bringing good people together to make our world a better, more enlightened place. Milos was a dear friend: he had such a pure spirit and incisive intellect, and the late night hours I spent with him discussing the state of the world and cinema both here in Chicago and at the Telluride Film Festival, were always like drinking fresh pure water from a mountain spring. We never talked about making deals or making money or what a film had grossed, which are the normal conversations I have in Hollywood; we spoke about the darkness of fear that was always threatening to engulf our society and how art, and especially cinema, could be a light to illuminate our paths and bring down the walls that exist between people. Milos said: “cinema has the power to change the universe.” And it does – and all you have to do is go to Facets and see the Milos Stehlik kaleidoscope of great films that have this power. Through Facets, Milos made these films available to this city and to our nation. When Milos invited me to Chicago last year, it wasn’t to speak to the famous and the influential as is usually the case when I come to speak, it was to speak to children and to students and to teachers – because to Milos, our youth was our future and his beautiful vision not only encompassed remembering our past but bringing the healing power of film to future generations upon whose shoulders the future of our troubled world will rest. There are two ways to make films. One is films that get their power from building up the walls that exist between people, playing on our fears and hatred. The Hollywood film industry was created by such a film: “The Birth of a Nation.” But there is another kind of film, films that bring down the walls that exist between people – film as a venue of empathy and humanity – films that when we gather together in the darkness of a theater touch our hearts and open our minds. Milos was dedicated to these kinds of films, and he surrounded himself with and promoted people and filmmakers who were dedicated to these kinds of films. He made the life of this city and our country a better place as a result. We have a beautiful tradition in our Mexican culture called “Dia de los Muertos” – the Day of the Dead – where we all gather together and build altars that are gateways made of marigold flowers which represent the sun and invite our ancestors and friends to come be with us and we celebrate them, because we believe that no one truly dies until they are forgotten. And so Milos is still with us as long as we carry his passion in our hearts. As long as we work to bring down the walls that exist between people and make films that bring humanity and light into the darkness of fear and hatred, Milos will live forever.

Gregory Nava is the critically acclaimed, award-winning director of such films as El Norte (1983), My Family (1995) and Selena (1997).

For decades, a retired schoolteacher on a remote village high on the Andes has been sharing with tourists her story of how she fed Ernesto “Ché” Guevara a bowl of soup and how he rewarded her with a poem hours before his execution. But as the government prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his death, more women step forward claiming the story as their own. Shot mostly as a series of still lives and featuring an enveloping sound design, Tavoosi’s feature film debut is reminiscent of Kiarostami’s work in its poetic portrait of a community left behind by history.

Virtual Screening Dates:

September 24-26 Special video from Bahman Tavoosi (Director) at the end of the film. The deeply religious Joanna steers couples away from divorce even when her own marriage is on shaky ground. Gabriel Mascaro’s (“Neon Bull”) new film delivers a Day-Glo, synthheavy, sensual and yet oppressive view of a not-so-distant Brazil.

“Days of Light” brings together six up-and-coming Central American filmmakers to tell the story of a solar storm which leaves the area without power or telecommunications for days. Disconnected from the technology they normally depend on, the characters in each of these stories will have to face life on its most basic terms. “Days of Light” may, at first glance, be following on the footsteps of the traditional anthology films. But it is truly a collaborative effort, each director turning in a first draft of their respective stories that were turned into one cohesive whole by directors Borges and Pérez Him. The result is a narrative that is faithful to each filmmaker’s vision and an introduction to a region whose filmmaking output is often overlooked.

Amid a political crisis in the border between Colombia and Venezuela, Diana, a young pregnant Wayuu woman, her brother and her husband make a living robbing those travellers who illegally cross it. After her brother and husband are killed during a botched robbery attempt, Diana has no choice but to fend for herself as she gets lost in a series of mysterious dreams. Shot with natural light and on minimal locations, in David David’s feature debut, the border is more than a physical space: it is also metaphysical.

September 20-22 Special video from Ana Bustamante (Director) at the end of the film.

Ana Bustamante’s mother thinks Ana’s occasional asphyxia may be the result of that time she stopped breathing while carrying Ana in her womb on the afternoon of February 13, 1982. That was also the moment her father Emil, a political activist, was detained and disappeared by Guatemala’s military. Now a filmmaker, Ana is determined to recover her father’s memory but she is met with silence, resistance and pain. Winner of the Ibero-American Documentary special jury prize at the Guadalajara Film Festival, Bustamante’s debut documentary is a haunting and deeply personal exploration of a country that has yet to come to terms with its past.

Soccer ties all these four interlinking stories of violence, romance, suspense and drama: a Honduran immigrant who must fight for his life, a soccer hooligan with a dilemma, a cameraman for a news channel who must do everything possible to get a story, and a legend of the Honduran National Team from the 80’s that revindicates himself. A soccer match traditionally lasts 90 minutes, but the consequences of the decisions made by these characters will last a lifetime.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Many young girls would probably answer this question with “princess or ballerina.” But ever since Emma was hit in the face by a ball during her communion, she has been firmly convinced that she will become a ‘saint’. Neither the nuns of her Catholic school, nor her parents can dissuade her from this idea. But when Andrés, who is not interested in faith and religion, joins her class, she takes him on as her first mission. During a visit to a stadium Emma realizes that she can influence the game in favor of her favorite team by praying. In her everyday life as well, she notices that, if she asks God for it, she can have an influence on things happening around her situations. But this also has consequences. Emma has to learn that as a saint she cannot arrange everything according to her wishes and convince everyone of her faith.

September 19-21 She was considered Mexico’s most beautiful woman in the 20s and 30s, an artist in her own right and an inspiration and muse for numerous artists, including painter and writer Dr. Atl with whom Carmen Mondragón (a.k.a., Nahui Olin) lived a passionate and turbulent affair. Their relationship lies at the heart of Gabriel Retes’ loving and bitingly sarcastic historical drama about Education Minister José Vasconcelos’ and President Álvaro Obregón’s project to use the arts as a vehicle to uphold Mexico’s national identity. Featuring a who’s who of the period’s most significant figures, “The Revolution and the Artists” beautifully captures the intellectual effervescence of the era. This virtual presentation is dedicated to the memory of its director Gabriel Retes, author of such landmark films as El bulto (1991) and Bienvenido/Welcome (1993) —both official selections of the Chicago Latino Film Festival, who passed away on April 20.

September 20-22 Every Sunday, Chano walks from his village to the street market to sell the jaguar figurines, or tecuanes, his grandfather Cenobio handcrafts. Following the advice of two tourists who buy the tecuanes, Chano convinces his grandfather to move to the city where they can earn a living with their handcrafts but they end up marginalized. Meanwhile, their figurines land in the hands of a foreign filmmaker who trademarks them and the legend they represent. Sánchez del Villar brings to life these legends through a fusion of animation and live action while critiquing the commercial exploitation of a millennial culture.

Virtual Screening Dates:

September 20-22 Eduardo Guillot’s passion project (this was supposed to have been his debut feature instead of last year’s Festival selection “All Can Fall”) centers on lawyer turned poet and guerrilla fighter Javier Heruad (19421963). Shot chronologically, the film follows Heruad from his university years to the many trips he made (including one to Paris where he was interviewed by Mario Vargas Llosa) to his recruitment by Peru’s National Liberation Army and death. Featuring a spellbinding performance from Steffano Tosso as Heruad, “Javier’s Passion” sheds light on a figure little known outside Peru.

Virtual Screening Dates:

September 25-27 Special video from Miguel Barreda (Director) at the end of the film.

Juan, the young son of a stone cutter in the quarries of Arequipa, witnesses his father’s apparently accidental death. He suspects his uncle Carlos of being behind it. When he finds out that his mother Gabriela is having an affair with Carlos, Juan, like Hamlet before him, decides to take matters into his own hands. Barreda’s film is more than a very Peruvian take on Shakespeare’s classic; it is also a critique of the country’s impunity and the abuses suffered by workers in such riskprone jobs as mining.

No one was immune to his charm, his talent and, most importantly, his joyful, melodious, proudly Puerto Rican voice. But he was more than the actor we all admire: he was also a doting father, a loving husband and a social warrior before the term was even coined. Ben DeJesús’ comprehensive and touching documentary not only pays tribute to this icon who left us too soon but also introduces his inspiring life and work to a new generation.

Diego lives with his father in a house without any material objects. When he finds a chair in the woods and his father forbids him from bringing it home, a desire for possession arises. Diego convinces his father to change his mind, but when he returns to the woods, something has happened. Something big.

El Cobre, a historic town in Cuba, is home to the oldest copper mine in Latin America. Though the mine is now closed and the town’s main export has changed, the people of El Cobre live the memory of the town’s history, celebrating cimarrón tradition and remembering the first slave uprisings.
