November 14, 2014 Shelter Inc. 1616 Arlington Heights Road Arlington Heights, Illinois 60004 Greetings! As Governor of the State of Illinois, I am pleased to welcome everyone gathered for Shelter, Inc.’s 27th Annual Charity Ball. For 27 years, Shelter, Inc.’s Charity Ball has raised funds to address the needs of abused and neglected children in Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs. Your dedicated work has positively impacted the lives of countless youths throughout the years, and this annual fundraising event helps to ensure that your efforts to help and protect children in need will continue for many years to come. I commend everyone in attendance for lending your support to Shelter, Inc. The long history of Shelter, Inc.’s Charity Ball is truly a testament to the strength of your organization, community, and staff. This anniversary is an opportunity for you to celebrate your success, while also reaffirming the dedication that has supported your organization for thirty-nine years. I encourage you to use this occasion to reflect on everything that Shelter, Inc. has accomplished throughout its history.

On behalf of the people of the Land of Lincoln, I offer my best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable event. Sincerely,

Pat Quinn Governor

2014 Honoray Chairs Dear Friends, Welcome to this year’s ‘Winter’s Golden Touch’ Annual Charity Ball. This marks Shelter’s 27th Annual Gala. Tonight, we celebrate the wonderful work Shelter has been committed to since 1975. Throughout the years, Shelter has provided many programs and services to children in need. Not only do these programs give physical care, but they also allow the children to finally see a light in their lives. We have all probably heard this traditional African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This is a perfect way to describe the heart behind Shelter’s mission. It truly is remarkable to see so many people come together to help these beautiful children and families. Without the help of Shelter, many children would not have the emotional and physical support needed to live a happy and healthy life. It has been such an honor to have met so many amazing people here at Shelter who work tirelessly for these children and adolescents. Our support here tonight is crucial for Shelter to continue their mission. As we all gather here tonight, let us all be a part of this village and give these beautiful children the life that every child deserves. Many thanks for your gifts and support,

2014 Buckholz Winner Jim and Jan Dobbs

Since joining Shelter as foster parents in early 2001, and adopting their son Jack later that year, Jim and Jan Dobbs’ wholehearted belief in Shelter and commitment to our services have helped Shelter make a significant difference in the lives of children and parents. Jim and Jan Dobbs own Woodfield Financial Advisors, Inc. They served as Honorary Chairs of Shelter’s annual Charity Ball in 2006. Jim Dobbs also served as Honorary Chair in 2011. Together, the Dobbs have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for our programs. They have told the story of the adoption, and post-adoption of Jack for audiences ranging from our Legislators to guests attending the Charity Ball. They co-founded their successful business, Woodfield Planning Corporation, in 1982. The company received numerous awards for outstanding customer service and business practices. In 2005, they were named Illinois “Broker of the Year” by the Illinois Association of Mortgage Brokers. They were also recognized by industry leader Freddie Mac in 2000 for innovative process improvements in the mortgage lending business. Both Jim and Jan Dobbs are natives of the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Married for more than 30 years, they have three adopted children, and are active in several community organizations. It is Shelter’s great honor to present Jim and Jan Dobbs with Shelter’s highest honor, the Paul Buckholz Award.
