LOOKING TO PAINT YOUR

HOUSE? Ask Yourself These Questions Before DIY’ing

With the warm weather here, you might be outside more, and therefore, spending more time around the exterior of your home. Is the paint on your exterior chipping or peeling? If so, it might be time for a touch-up or full-blown paint job. Now, it can be tempting to do-it-yourself – after all, it’s so expensive to hire pros, and not that hard to do, right? Well, not really. Before you decide to go at it alone, ask yourself these important questions. They might leave you realizing you need to call in the professionals.

Do you have the time? Repainting a home can take a full week or two. For many people, that translates to a lot of vacation days or weekends. Are you willing to make that sacrifice? By hiring professionals, they can paint your home during the day while you’re at work.

Do you have the right stuff? The highest quality acrylic latex paint costs more than S20 per gallon, and you’ll also need ladders, scrapers, sandpaper, brushes and/ or rollers and safety equipment. Do you have these items? If not, are you willing to invest in them?


Do you have the patience? While painting can be fun and psychologically rewarding, good surface preparation – the sanding and priming essential to any successful paint job – can be very tedious. Will you take the necessary time to properly prepare the surface before yielding to the urge to paint? Consider renting power-washing equipment to speed surface preparation, or have the professionals prep your exterior for you. Can you afford a professional? By doing the job yourself, you can save a lot of money; however, having your home professionally painted will be faster and eliminate the need for buying equipment, preparing the surface and doing the actual painting yourself. You must think to yourself – how much is that time and effort worth?

Can you do it? Have you painted a home’s exterior before? It’s tough the first go around, especially if you’re unfamiliar with surface preparation and application techniques. And are you afraid of heights? Look up at the highest point of your house? Can safely paint up there on top of a ladder? You also must have the physical ability to hold yourself on a ladder while reaching out and painting – it gets tiring quickly. If you decide to tackle your painting project on your own, proceed with confidence. However, should you choose the safer route and hire a professional, there are plenty of licensed and experienced painters in your area that would be happy to do the job for you.

Refresh Your Home for a Brighter

Spring As temperatures rise and flowers start to bloom, it’s time to wipe away the colder months and refresh your home. Spring and summer are all about airing out your space and spending more time outside, which calls for cleaning and perking up your routine.


While a big clean and seasonal overhaul can sound daunting, here are five simple steps to help make your preparations for warm weather a breeze.

Add a Pop of Color

Declutter to De-stress

Say goodbye to winter grays and blues and invite color back into your home with affordable and small swaps to celebrate the colors and hues of the season. Replace white table napkins or plain placemats with patterned prints or shades of magenta, red and orange for a pop of color, or snip a few buds from the garden and place in different sized vases and jars to decorate the table spaces and windowsills around your home. Incorporating pastels, yellows and greens also helps reflect the sunny, blooming outdoors.

While disinfecting and removing odors are the cornerstone of spring cleaning, it’s also important to re-evaluate items that were hoarded over the winter months. For example, revisit your warm weather wardrobe and pick at least three items to get rid of or donate to a clothing drive for every new item that you plan to bring in. Start by eliminating what doesn’t fit or what’s no longer needed. Cleaning out your wardrobe is an easy way to declutter your space.

Clean Out the Fridge Before tackling messes around the house, start at the heart of the kitchen by cleaning out your refrigerator. Get rid of old leftovers, forgotten frozen meals and expired condiments. By removing perished and never-used contents from your fridge, you’ll get rid of lurking odors and have plenty of room for all the fresh produce that spring and summer have to offer.

Soften and Eliminate Odors from Fabrics Throughout the cooler seasons, warm weather clothing like t-shits and shorts that have been stored away can take on musky odors and become stiff and wrinkled after being folded for so long. Preparing your wardrobe is an essential step to ease into the seasonal transition.

Update Your Calendar After you refresh your space, revisit your calendar to update with spring and summer sports, holidays and events. Warmer weather and sunnier days mean a fuller social schedule, and keeping your calendar organized is just as important as keeping your home organized. Hanging a whiteboard calendar in a central location is an efficient way for the whole family to make real-time updates. Add flower magnets or use pink and green dry erase markers for a seasonal touch. Make the most of your spring cleaning with these tips to start enjoying a more fresh, colorful and organized home.
