secure its future … and the supply of his racing machines, of course. Barnato’s money, which he inherited from his father’s diamond-mining exploits in Kimberley, bankrolled the development of the 6½, 4½, and 8 Litre. Were it not for his money, the company would have been bankrupt. Were it not for his passion (and acumen) for racing (Woolf was one of the famous Bentley Boys), the company would have failed to achieve the four consecutive wins at Le Mans from 1927 to ’30. Barnato laid the foundation for Bentley’s current success. With its Breitling for Bentley Barnato 42 timepiece, the company pays tribute to these famous racing successes. The Barnato 42 features a new 42 mm steel case with cambered sapphire crystal. The dial features sporty redrimmed counters with knurled bezels, which were inspired by the control buttons found in Bentley vehicles. It uses a calibre 41B chronometer movement with a frequency of 28 800 vibrations an hour. It is a 1/4th second chronograph with 30-second and 12-hour totalisers and features a calendar. The strap is of Barenia leather, Bentley leather, crocodile leather, or rubber. Breitling is available at Arthur Kaplan; visit www.arthurkaplan.co.za

y the mid-1920s, Bentley was in dire straits. Reprieve came from a young gentleman from London by the name of Joel Woolf Barnato. He was a racing fanatic, had bought a Bentley 3 Litre to race at Brooklands and had recently learned that his favourite sportscar maker could close its doors. He purchased the company to

GMT “V8” To mark the launch of the new Continental GT V8, Breitling has created a 250-piece limited edition of its Bentley GMT chronograph. The piece features a second time-zone display, but its most distinctive feature is its metallic-red inner bezel bearing the names of 24 cities. The original design of the steel case is characterised by asymmetrical lugs and is teamed with a bracelet or rubber strap, reserved exclusively for this model. The 49 mm case houses a calibre 47B chronograph selfwinding movement. It is a 1/9th second chronograph with 6-hour, 15-minute and 30-seconds totalisers. The Bentley Continental V8 is powered by a 4,0-litre V8 engine that develops a massive 660 N.m of torque, propelling the car from zero to 100 km/h in 4,6 seconds and on to a top speed of 303 km/h.

hen Audemars Piguet released its first divers’ watch two years ago, it became one of the watchmaker’s most successful pieces. For 2012, the company decided to launch a super lightweight, updated version known as the Royal Oak Offshore Diver in forged carbon. This sporty watch boasts a black waffle-embossed dial and bright-yellow minute hand. Differing from woven carbon-fibre, forged carbon-fibre is compressed under heat, which results in a unique marbled effect. Despite being lighter, the new watch remains adept at diving to the same depths as its metal-based predecessor. The Forged Carbon has a “mega tapisserie” dial, AP calibre 3120 automatic movement, rubber strap and rotating innertiming ring. The cadence of the balance is 21 600 vibrations an hour and it has a power reserve of 60 hours. The new watch makes use of a 42 mm forged carbon-fibre case, a ceramic bezel, yellow 15-minute arc along the timing dial and, as mentioned, a yellow-tipped minute hand. Thanks to its use of a faceted, luminescent-baton hour indicator as well as its luminescent hour and minute hands, the forged-carbon watch conforms to Swiss norms. Further requirements dictate that the watch be watertight up to 100 metres (it can go up to 300 metres) and have a strap capable of withstanding forces up to 200 Newton. The Royal Oak Offshore Diver is clearly a rugged timepiece that was designed and developed to be used in normal, leisure and professional activities. It has a dive-time measurement and date function. CAPTAIN WINSOR ANNUAL CALENDAR www.zenith-watches.com

Life is in the movement

very third Sunday in August, about 200 of the most prized collectors’ cars and motorcycles in the world roll onto what can easily be called the best finishing hole in golf – the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach in the United States – to participate in the prestigious Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance. What originally started as an intimate event paired with a road race through the pine and cypress forests of Pebble Beach has grown into one of the top-ranking collector-car shows in the world. The Concours is not a contest of speed but rather of excellence. Here, automobiles are judged for their historical accuracy, technical merit and, of course, style. And the best of the best garner reward and recognition. Thousands of enthusiasts gather every year to celebrate these exquisite vehicles and enjoy the company of others who share their passion. And Rolex may just have manufactured a timepiece that will not be outshone by these automotive beauties. The company has launched a new version of the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona. Along with its 18-carat yellow-gold case and bracelet, the bezel is set with an array of sapphires in the colours of a rainbow. In fact, the case lugs, crown guard as well as the hour markers on the dial

have been gem-set, while the three counters’ gold crystals match the brilliance of the precious gems. The counters have been specially crafted from 18-carat gold-alloy in Rolex’s own foundry and are in stark contrast with the black lacquer of the dial. Paying homage to the famous racing circuit in the United States, this prestigious chronograph carries the name “Daytona” in red letters on its dial. The 40 mm case is crafted from a solid block of 18-carat gold and the fluted case-back has been hermetically screwed down with a special tool exclusive to Rolex watchmakers. The watch is equipped with a calibre 4130 self-winding mechanical movement entirely manufactured and developed by Rolex. It boasts a parachrom hairspring with a Breguet over-coil that is insensitive to magnetic fields, thus offering greater stability when exposed to temperature variations and shocks. The Cosmograph Daytona is fitted with an 18-carat yellow-gold bracelet with a latest-generation safety clasp. This solid-link bracelet also features Rolex’s EasyLink rapidextension system that allows the wearer to easily increase the bracelet length by about 5 mm – providing additional comfort when needed. Rolex presents the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, an annual driving event that showcases the elegance of the automobile in motion. It is open to all entrants in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and pays homage to road races of yesteryear – as this year’s Tour poster painted by Barry Rowe demonstrates (pictured left). It depicts the excitement of early road races with an image that features Bruce and Jolene McCaw’s 1908 Benz Prince Heinrich Two Seat Race Car speeding past a Stutz near Bixby Bridge in Big Sur. Long before its golf links were laid, Pebble Beach was famous for its scenic driving routes. The Tour traces portions of the original 17-mile drive through pine and cypress forests, and briefly pauses in charming Carmel-by-the-Sea for a gourmet lunch, before returning to Pebble Beach.

CHRONO 2012 HEUER CARRERA MIKROGRAPH 1/100th SECOND

TAG HEUER AND MOTORSPORT Measuring 1/100th of a second A brief history In 1916, TAG Heuer developed the Mikrograph, the first sports stopwatch accurate to 1/50th and 1/100th of a second. This was at a time when other timing instruments could only measure to the nearest 1/5th of a second. This technical innovation changed motorsport and ensured that TAG Heuer would be the official timekeeper to the world’s most prominent competitive sporting events ever since.

T

iming is everything in motorsport. It all boils down to fractions of a second. Unless you are Audi Sport Team Joest and have just completed the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, that is… As the #1 Audi R18 e-tron Quattro of André Lotterer/ Marcel Fässler/Benoît Tréluyer took the chequered flag at exactly 15h00, Audi secured its 11th victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Finishing a lap ahead of its rivals made accurate time measurement nearly irrelevant. This victory was also historic because of the fact that it was the first Le Mans victory by a hybrid racer. It is this technological innovation that strengthens the partnership between TAG Heuer and Audi Sport. TAG Heuer has introduced the first-ever column wheel-integrated mechanical chronograph displaying 1/100th of a second with a striking central hand, which allows for easy reading. The Heuer Carrera Mikrograph 1/100th Second Chronograph has been entirely designed, developed and manufactured in the company’s Haute Horlogerie in La Chaux-De-Fonds, the same workshop responsible for the Monaco 4. With it, the company reinvents the highfrequency dual-assortment mechanical movement and

Brings the original stopwatch innovation to the wrists of racing enthusiasts

pays tribute to the Heuer Mikrograph stopwatch of 1916. Much like the calibre 360, the Mikrograph features two different balance wheels, with separate escapements and transmission systems. Unlike the 360, however, the Mikrograph is a fully integrated chronograph with a column-wheel system. It comprises a balance wheel for the watch moving at 28 800 vibrations an hour, with a 42-hour power reserve; for the stopwatch, the high-frequency balance wheel oscillates at 360 000 vibrations an hour, with a 90-minute power reserve, displaying this 1/100th of a second with the central chronograph hand. A transparent sapphirecrystal case back allows a direct and stunning view of the two “hearts” beating at different speeds and facing each other at the bottom of the complex movement. This brings the original stopwatch innovation to the wrists of racing enthusiasts. The Heuer Carrera Mikrograph 1/100th Second Chronograph is available in a rose-gold limited edition of 150 pieces. errari remains the quintessential performance-car brand. For the young and young-at-heart, the famous brand represents the epitome of motoring. For watchmakers, a partnership and relationship with Ferrari remains as desirable and elusive as ownership of a Prancing Horse remains to the average motorist. Near the end of 2011, Hublot took up the mantle and became the official watch and timekeeper of Ferrari, the official timekeeper and watch of Scurderia Ferrari (the Maranello-based brand’s F1 team) as well as the Ferrari Challenge racing series. Hublot is no stranger to motorsport, having been the official watchmaker and timekeeper of the Formula 1 World Championship since 2010. In the last two years, the company has launched the limited-edition F1 King Power series of chronographs (honouring circuits like Suzuka and Interlagos). The company has been equally eager with its five-year partnership with Ferrari and has introduced three Ferrari editions of its Big Bang collection. The Big Bang Ferrari Magic Gold and Titanium watches feature 45 mm cases and bezels (the one in polished magic gold and the other satin-finished titanium). Both use sapphire dials, sapphire crystal casings and a self-winding chronograph flyback movement with column wheel. The seconds dial in the 3 o’clock position uses yellow and red detailing to emulate Ferrari livery. The Big Bang Chrono Tourbillon Ferrari features a 44 mm case and bezel from carbon-fibre. It boasts a skeleton-form, matte-black dial infused with the Ferrari logo, coloured sapphire crystal and crocodile leather strap with red stitching. Lastly, it uses a manual-winding Tourbillon chronograph movement with a 120-hour power reserve. Hublot is available at Arthur Kaplan; visit www.arthurkaplan.co.za

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the most sought-after Ferraris, Hublot gathered 24 Ferrari 250 GTO owners and their vehicles in one place. A special watch was created to mark this occasion. The 250 GTO timepiece is based on Hublot’s Classic Fusion collection and features a 45 mm titanium case. The Tourbillon movement has been specially manufactured in a skeleton form with the barrel drum located at the 12 o’clock position, which evokes the design of the Ferrari 250 GTO’s rim. Only current 250 GTO owners are eligible to purchase the Hublot 250 GTO timepiece and they have the option of engraving their vehicle’s chassis number on the movement bridge on the case-back side.

It featured a large, robust crown system that was placed on the left-hand side of the case, remaining true to Ilvo’s designs. With the limited-edition U-42 (featured here), the company again pays tribute to the source of its inspiration. It features a unique crown that pulls outwards at 90 degrees and locks into place level with the 5 o’clock position. The back case, 47 mm case and bezel are of titanium. A brief history

18

The original “U-Boat” left-hook watch was designed by Ilvo Fontana in the early 1940s. Officine Fontana was known for the design and manufacture of high-precision instruments and components, and the company was commissioned by the Italian navy to design a wristwatch. Ilvo met the brief with a watch that was not only very sturdy in order to meet the navy’s precise technical specifications, but big enough to be easily read in any weather or light conditions. The crown was positioned to the left, which allowed practical advantages during heavy usage, such as easier movement of the wrist. Due to the instability in Europe at the time, the commission was scrapped and the designs locked away in Fontana’s safe for close on 60 years. In 2000, Italo Fontana, the grandson of Ilvo, discovered three precious designs, which were to become the inspiration for the first U-Boat timepiece. U-Boat watches are characterised by their strong identity, most notably their size, legibility and distinctive design.

This Swiss watchmaker celebrates the 24th running of the Mexican rally with a special timepiece

Defn. Chronometer: A chronometer is a watch that has been tested and certified to meet certain precision standards by the COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Control) in Switzerland.

T

he La Carrera Panamericana remains one of the rarest motorsport thrills. It is the last open, top-speed road race of its kind in the world. It is a seven-day, 3 300 km dash over closed, paved roads through spectacular South American countryside. The modern event is a revival of the famous international Pan Am that was conducted between 1950 and ‘54. Many of the world’s most celebrated drivers, including F1 world champions Phil Hill and Juan Manuel Fangio, came to Mexico during these years to test their cars, skill and stamina. After the Mexican section of the Panamerican Highway was completed in 1950, a five-day race across the country was organised by the Mexican government to advertise this feat and attract international business to the country. The race ran almost entirely along the newly laid highway, which crossed the country from north to south for a total distance of just over 3 300 km. By 1955, it had served its purpose and the event was cancelled, only to be revived as a pro rally by Mexican and American auto enthusiasts in 1988. Each car is given a route book with detailed instructions to follow for the entire seven days. Every turn along the entire route is listed and rated according to degree of difficulty. Warnings are given about dangerous conditions. Speed bumps and fuel stations are also noted, but there can always be a surprise lurking around each blind corner. Each day’s route is divided into transit and speed stages. The former are run from town to town on regular

highways and in regular traffic. But several times a day, the racers line up for the speed stages. After the Mexican Federal Highway Patrol clears the road, the cars are released in 30-second intervals. The cars may then travel as fast as the driver’s skill and road conditions allow. Unlike other events, there is no limit on the speed of the cars or any handicap system. No driver is asked about his intended level of participation, but the “tourist drivers” generally have more fun. Regardless of his intentions, a driver’s determination and skill are pushed to the limit. Frédériqué Constant perfectly captured the classic feel of the participating cars in the La Carrera Panamericana with two limited-edition timepieces. Both make use of 43 mm diamond-polished stainlesssteel cases and come equipped with a new FC-435 handwound calibre with small second. The silver dial is finished either in stainless steel or with rose gold-plated, handapplied indexes. Both versions feature the original logo of the race on the dial, will be limited to 1 888 pieces each and be delivered in a special gift box including an engraved metallic plate showing the 2011 route of the race. Frédériqué Constant is not available at Arthur Kaplan. Please contact Picot and Moss on 011 669 0500 or visit www.picotandmoss.co.za

A more recent history Since 1988, the La Carrera Panamericana has become one of the most iconic car rallies in the world. This year sees the 25th running of this historic event. Last year’s rally, which was sponsored by Frédériqué Constant, attracted 180 cars with drivers from 15 countries. The race stretched from Huatulco on the south coast of Mexico to the finish in the colonial city of Zacatecas seven days later. Frédériqué Constant has been sponsoring classic-car events since 2004, in particularly Healey events like the European Healey Meeting. In 2010, it sponsored the historic Peking to Paris Rally, and the company will shortly announce its future classic-car sponsorship initiatives.

he ties between Aston Martin and Jaeger-LeCoultre date back to the 1920s, when the latter developed dashboard instrumentation for a number of British automakers. At the time, Edmond Jaeger had been creating an illustrious name for the company in the area of precision instruments in the automotive field. World War One seriously impeded watch production and, in 1920, LeCoultre & Cie (in cooperation with Edmond Jaeger) turned to diversification. LeCoultre and Jaeger exported over 20 000 counters to the United Kingdom. In 1921, Jacques-David LeCoultre and his Parisian partners at Jaeger established a small workshop in London which specialised in automotive-dashboard instruments. Jaeger became the prevalent supplier to the most prestigious car companies. The success of Jaeger in this field continued unabated and the dashboard of the 1,5-litre Aston Martin LM from the 1930s, a class winner in international motorsport, was equipped with Jaeger instruments. The modern partnership between the two companies has continued unabated. It cannot be denied that both Aston Martin and Jaeger-LeCoultre produce beautiful, sleek products. The modern tie-up between the two brands started in 2004, when Aston CEO Dr Ulrich Bez and Jaeger CEO Jerôme Lambert announced the first collaborative timepiece from the two companies. The AMVOX collection was born. It derives its name from Aston Martin (AM) and JaegerLeCoultre Memovox (VOX), which was the first automatic

watch with an alarm function. The AMVOX1 Alarm was the first in the new line and featured counters that hark back to the dials found in vintage Aston Martins. Then, in 2005, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the AMVOX2 Chronograph, with a vertical trigger case allowing actuation of the chronograph by simply pressing the crystal. In 2008, the AMVX2 DBS Transponder made its debut, which allowed the wearer to start or stop his or her DBS with the watch itself. How very Bond… The latest model in the collection is the AMVOX5 World Chronograph. The piece was designed to recall the Aston Martin DBR1-2 Coupés that were piloted in endurance races between 2009 and 2011. The turning flange gives instant visualisation of the time in any of the world’s 24 time zones. The AMVOX5 World Chronograph will be made in a limited series: 300 with ceramic and titanium cases, and 200 with a ceramic and 18-carat pink-gold case. Two Racing versions will also be produced in ceramic and titanium, with a black or white dial. These are limited to 100 pieces for each version. As the name suggests, the racing pieces have been inspired by the successes of the Aston Martin Racing LMP-1 endurance racers and feature chronographic counters executed in carbon-fibre, punctuated with a flash of orange on the world-time disc, the chronographic second hand, and the overstitching on the calfskin leather strap. AG Heuer and McLaren: both names that share a rich motoring and motorsport heritage. In fact, TAG Heuer can trace its motoring roots back to 1911 when it received a patent for the “Time of Trip”, the first dashboard-mounted chronograph that not only displayed the time of day, but in a smaller dial at the 12 o’clock position measured the duration of a trip (up to 12 hours). It then went on to produce numerous timepieces for automobiles and aviators, and by 1953 had developed the “Auto-Graph”, which featured a tachymeter scale on the dial and a hand that could be pre-set to a specific point on the scale. This allowed a rally navigator to determine speeds over a measured mile. Further automotive-related items followed, most notably the Master Time (eight-day clock), Monte Carlo (12-hour stopwatch), the Super Autavia (“AUT”os and

“AVIA”tion), Sebring (60-minute, split-second timer) and the Auto-Rallye (60-minute stopwatch). The company soon became a popular choice among automobile racers and was a leading producer of stopwatches and timing equipment. It was therefore the first company to develop chronographs specifically for sportscars and to break the barriers in measuring 1/10 000th of a second digitally and 1/100th of a second mechanically. Many auto enthusiasts, racers and mechanics started wearing the company’s chronograph wristwatches, a trend which continues to this day. Its brand ambassadors have included Alain Prost, Juan Manuel Fangio, Steve McQueen, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, and the company has been the official timekeeper of Formula 1 and is currently a sponsor of the multiple race-winning Audi Le Mans team. But, it is TAG Heuer’s relationship with McLaren that is worth mentioning. It started in the mid-1980s

In 1964, Jack Heuer designed the Carrera chronograph in honour of his love for the La Carrera Panamericana road race in Mexico. It has since become one of the company’s most successful collections. The company is the main sponsor of the 25th running of the Pan Am this year.

when Techniques d’Avant Garde (TAG) supplied turbo engines to the McLaren Formula 1 team. Its partnership with McLaren Automotive dates back to 1993 when it developed a special watch for the launch of the McLaren F1 road car and has recently been revived with the production of the TAG Heuer Carrera MP4-12C Chronograph. This timepiece reflects the design, colour and materials used on the MP4-12C. Its carbon-based dial draws its inspiration from the MP4-12C’s carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. By using sapphire crystal, a cut-out in the dial reveals the inner workings of the timepiece. A titanium case with the McLaren “Speed Marque” logo in the crown houses a new automatic movement, featuring a semi-perpetual calendar that needs to be adjusted only annually. Alcantara is used as a lining for the strap, while orange stitching mimics the looks of the McLaren’s sporty seats. Enthusiastic drivers may make use of the “flyback” function that allows the chronograph to be reset and immediately restarted by pressing only once on the push button. Only 1 000 pieces of the Carrera MP4-12C Chronograph have been produced. TAG Heuer is available at Arthur Kaplan; visit www.arthurkaplan.co.za. Chopard adds a sense of occasion … and timing

CHOPARD MILLE MIGLIA CHRONO 2012

CHRONO 2012 CHOPARD MILLE MIGLIA

CHOPARD AND JACKIE ICKX Mille Miglia welcomes Chrono Lady and GT XL Chrono Speed Silver

“I

n this sport, luck and tragedy are only a few 100th of a second apart from each other” – Jacky Ickx. Part of Ickx’s racing success cxan be attributed to his ability to always stay a step ahead. In an interview with the late Russell Bulgin in 2000, the Belgian exracer recalled: “The reason I was able to last so long was because I was able to move from one category to another … I never waited for somebody to say ‘you’re not fast enough, bye-bye’. I always tried to be just one step ahead – and it was a very satisfactory solution.” Ickx was a pragmatist, both on the track as well as when he switched to full-time sportscars after having achieved 25 Formula 1 podiums. He had raced with such teams as Ferrari, Brabham and Team Lotus, and against Jackie Stewart, Jochen Rindt and Emerson Fittipaldi, and remained competitive in the era of Niki Lauda and James Hunt. Ickx had on many occasions punched above his weight; in the 1968 German Grand Prix, where Jackie Stewart won in heavy rain and fog, Ickx qualified on pole and finished fourth. In his debut season, he qualified on the front row of the F1 grid while driving a Formula 2 Matra. Ickx went on to achieve six victories at Le Sarthe Circuit at Le Mans – an achievement that gained him an Honorary Citizen of Le Mans award in 2000.

In 1988, Chopard launched its Mille Miglia collection in honour of the revival of the epic Mille Miglia saga. Today, the Mille Miglia Storica attracts close to 400 vintage and classic cars that attempt the picturesque and ancient route from Brescia to Rome and back. Last year, the company added a feminine touch with its Racing in Pink timepiece and this year it has introduced the Mille Miglia Chrono Lady. The 42 mm piece is finished in white, features a mother-of-pearl dial and sports a 1960s Dunlop racing tyre-tread motif on the strap. It is also available in an all-steel version. Also in 2011, Chopard paid tribute to Italian racing cars with the Mille Miglia GT XL Chrono Rossi Corsa. This year, the focus has

shifted to Germany with the adoption of silver livery. The origin of racing colours dates back to the Gorden Bennett Cup, a race that pitted national teams against one another. This completion gave rise to vintage blue (France), rosso corsa (Italy), British racing green, speed yellow (Belgium) and speed silver for Germany. The new Mille Miglia GT XL Chrono Speed Silver features a 44 mm polished titanium case. Its brushed silver-toned dial with hollowed and snailed counters echoes the colour of the stitching on the black leather strap. The minute numerals have been transferred on the inner bezel ring, which is reminiscent of dashboard speedos. Legibility is enhanced by a sapphire crystal that is glare-proof. Its aerodynamic titanium pushers, along with its tachometric scale engraved on the bezel, enhance its sporting nature.

He had fierce resolve. And a sense of timing. It is this uncanny timing that brought Ickx to a Chopard boutique in Geneva a few years ago. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Chopard co-president and a classic-car aficionado, was there and took time to tell Ickx about the company and its history. He was later invited to the Chopard Museum, and has since then regularly joined Karl-Friedrich in the Mille Miglia vintage-car parade. The development of the Jacky Ickxedition timepieces within the Chopard Classic Racing

collection was very much a natural move. The latest version is the Edition V (pictured), which features a 43 mm stainlesssteel case, with either a black or white dial. The reverse side is engraved with Jacky Ickx’s signature. The rubber strap features a 1960s Dunlop racing tyre-tread motif, but handsewn alligator leather straps are also available. The self-winding movement chronometer beats at a frequency of 28 800 vibrations an hour and has a 40-hour power reserve. It drives the hours, minutes and small seconds at 9 o’clock, a date window at 12 o’clock, a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a 24-hour counter – to honour Ickx’s achievements at Le Mans – at the 6 o’clock position. The Edition V is produces in a limited series of 2 000 pieces. Chopard is not available at Arthur Kaplan Jewellers. Contact Picot and Moss on 011 669 0500 or visit www.picotandmoss.co.za

Defn. Perpetual Calendar: A perpetual calendar is a mechanism that automatically takes into account the varying number of days in each month as well as leap years. This generally means that the watch will not need to be reset for more than a century assuming the movement keeps running.

MICHEL HERBELIN AND THE NEWPORT YACHT CLUB Classic style for those sailing days

F

rom Michel Herbelin’s flagship Newport collection, the Two Tone Newport Marine timepiece combines the practicality of a sports watch with the simplicity of a more classic style. The lacquered dial is in midnight blue with indexes and hands in 18-carat gold plate to complement the case. The hands are coated in a luminous material for maximum legibility in dark conditions. The 28 mm, 18-carat gold-plated case has a brushedsteel bezel and the crown is in stainless steel. It is inspired by the America’s Cup and the race to Newport, Rhode Island. All Newport Marine watches feature details such as the ship’s wheel logo at the 12 o’clock position on the dial and embossed on the crown. The case back is engraved with the Newport Marine Yacht motif. The blue sharkskin strap is made from the softest of leathers with a natural lining for maximum comfort. It is water resistant to 10 atmospheres, which means that, despite its style, it can cope with the rigours of life on a yacht. The club is located on the northeast corner of the harbour where members, their families and guests enjoy one of the finest yachting facilities that New England has to offer. Bell & Ross pays tribute to WW2 bomber navigators

A

ccurate timekeeping is arguably the most crucial factor for an air force pilot or navigator. It allows for precise navigation and positioning, and the calculation of flight speed. This was no more crucial than during the bombing campaigns of WW2. Now Bell & Ross has decided to pay homage to the time-keeping instruments used by bombers in the late 1930s and ’40s. The Vintage WW2 Régulateur Heritage is the third timepiece of Bell & Ross’s Vintage collection of “war” pieces, with the company having launched a WW1 pocket watch and wristwatch in 2011. The Vintage WW2 takes its inspiration from the timing devices used by bomber navigators. These devices emphasised clear legibility and ease of use, even while wearing gloves. The Vintage WW2 thus incorporates several traits found on these original timepieces, including a 49 mm stainless steel case with PVD finish, a bezel with widely spaced notches that can rotate in both directions and an oversized crown positioned at 9 o’clock.

The watch makes use of a Dubois Depraz movement. The emphasis is placed on the classical regulator dial (with large, central minute hands and sub-dials for hours and seconds), as the minute hand was a crucial indicator for pilots and navigators who needed to make accurate readings of short intervals of time over their position and flight speed. The dusty-yellow numerals are a perfect combination for the dark sand-coloured dial, while the strap is made from distressed calfskin. Overall, the watch displays modern technology but with a clear vintage style. Bell & Ross retails at Vereeniging Jewellers (011 678 9161) and Bellagio (011 883 2217). CHRONO 2012 BREMONT P-51

BREMONT AND THE P-51 MUSTANG

The Bremont P-51 is more than just inspired by a WW2 fighter…

Fragile but Agile Fragile but Agile (serial number 44-12016) rolled off the assembly line in Dallas, Texas, in December 1944. It was despatched to the Far East and assigned to the 342nd Fighter Squadron of the 348th Fighter Group, which was stationed at San Marcelino Airbase just north of Manila Bay. It was assigned to lt. Bert Lee Junior and was credited with two confirmed kills during the war: one, a Japanese A6M “Zero” fighter, and the other a twin-engine “Betty” bomber. Both Lee and his Mustang survived the war.

M

any timepiece manufacturers claim to find their inspiration in the automotive, nautical, and aviation spheres, but few are as closely aligned to these muses as Bremont and the company’s limited-edition pieces. The latest in a long line of desirable timepieces is the Bremont P-51, a chronograph manufactured with original parts from a famous WW2 Pacific war veteran 1944 Mustang P-51 K-10 fighter. Original aluminium metal from Fragile but Agile, as the plane was affectionately known, is integrated into both the dial and the movement of the timepiece. The design of the dial itself is inspired by the clocks found in the P-51 and incorporates a rotor next to the 9 o’clock position on its face. The clear reverse side sports a hand-crafted rotor made from the aluminium skin of the P-51, with blue and yellow detailing that mimics the livery of the donor fighter. The 43 mm hardened steel Trip-Tick case, using Bremont’s B-EBE2000 technology, integrates the new rotating Roto-Click inner bezel that houses four ball-bearings inside the case. The P-51 is assembled at the company’s atelier in England and houses a modified Swiss BE-54A automatic chronometer

movement that also shows UTC time. Production has been limited to only 251 pieces. Bremont is not distributed in South Africa. Visit its online boutique at www.bremont.com

A brief history The British Bremont was started by brothers Nick and Giles English in 2002. It offers a range of highly developed aviationinspired timepieces of exceptional quality and high aesthetic value. If you’ve missed the opportunity to purchase the P-51, the company also has plans to manufacture a timepiece that makes use of materials from the historic HMS Victory.

he Swiss watch manufacturer Alpina Genève launched its Sailing collection in 2011. The range was inspired by a close collaboration with the Italian Extreme 40 Catamaran team Niceforyou. The Extreme Sailing Series

CHRONO 2012 ALPINA EXTREME SAILING

Q&A with Peter Stas, CEO of Alpina Why is Alpina involved in sailing regattas? The star product of the Alpina Sailing Collection is an automatic chronograph with regatta start function. It has a unique, easy-to-read regatta display; Alpina is the only watch manufacturer that offers such a calibre. To promote this watch, we have brought it to sailing enthusiasts during regattas. You are at the helm of the Alpina Swan 80 yacht. What drives you? I have sailed since I was a child, as a sailing instructor and for leisure. Starting in small boats in the Netherlands, later I sailed larger boats in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Hong Kong. Being on the water is a passion and participating in regattas is extremely exciting. It demands ultimate concentration. The teamwork during a regatta is a learning experience that doubles as management training. There is no margin for error during a regatta because lives are at stake. The team on a boat must run like clockwork. What are your plans for 2012? The Alpina Swan 80 recently raced in the Palmavella and will race in the Loro Piani and Giraglia regattas in June. Later this year, we will take part in the Voiles des St. Tropez and the Middle Sea Race regattas.

Now in its sixth season, the ESS has given sailing a proper dusting off, bringing the action of sailing to the public with Stadium Sailing. The series sees numerous teams at the helm of multi-hulled vessels pitted against one another to ensure action-packed rivalry. The Extreme 40 vessels were designed by Olympic champions Yves Loday and Mitch Booth, and are capable of reaching speeds usually reserved for motorboats. The series has gone global and in 2011 had 21 Olympians, four gold medallists, 50 trans-Atlantics and seven round-the-world circumnavigators competing. For more info, visit www.extremesailingseries.com Innovation and uncompromising quality are the hallmarks of FrĂŠdĂŠrique Constant. Driven by an unparalleled passion for precision and craftsmanship, our watchmakers manufacture Geneva timepieces of contemporary, classic design and exceptional value.
