Low water intake adequacy among Filipinos - FNRI By: Ross Hettinger and Marilou R. Galang

BUTUAN CITY – Did you know that water intake adequacy was low among Filipinos? Data from the 8th National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) were used to estimate water and fluid intake of the Filipino population across age groups. Fluids are liquids that have been prepared for human consumption. These include water, milk and dairy-based beverages, juices, softdrinks, coffee, tea, alcoholic beverages and many more.

30

It was found that the average total fluid intake of Filipinos was 1691 milliliters per day or an equivalent of seven glasses of fluid per day. Drinking water contributed the highest percentage of fluid consumption (65.3%) followed by water from food (9.1%) and coffee and tea (7.8%). Of those surveyed, children in the age group of 6 months to 5 years old had the highest percentage of individuals meeting their water adequacy at 38.6% and the lowest was noted among lactating mothers 23 - 29 December, 2017

at 6.7%. The mean energy intake of Filipinos from fluids was only 139.3 kcal per day wherein almost onethird was contributed by the intakes of softdrinks (32.7%) followed by coffee and tea and milk and dairybased beverages.

Pinoys satisfied with Duterte admin’s ‘pro-poor’ programs: Palace MANILA - The Palace on Saturday, Dec. 23, attributed President Rodrigo Duterte’s very good satisfaction ratings during the last quarter of 2017 to his administration’s pro-poor initiatives.

Social Weather Stations’ (SWS) Fourth Quarter 2017 survey showed that the President’s gross satisfaction rating rose to 71 percent in December from 67 percent last September. In a radio interview aired over Radyo Pilipinas, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar said the President’s “very good” satisfaction rating can be credited to the government’s thrust to push for a more inclusive economic growth.

The Secretary particularly lauded the administration’s economic team and the members of Congress for working towards the enactment of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act (TRAIN). He said majority of Filipinos stand to benefit from the tax measure, which he also described as “pro-poor.”

“Ito po ay malaking tulong sa ating mga kababayan sapagkat nubenta’y nuebe porsyento na mga kababayan natin ay bababa ‘yung kanilang income “This government is really the most tax or tuluyang mawawala. More than pro-poor government,” he stressed. 80 percent na mga kababayan natin

Furthermore, the Presidential Communications Chief noted that the additional revenues to be collected through the TRAIN Act would be used to fund the government’s priority projects on education, social welfare, and infrastructure. Among these programs are the provision of free tuition in all state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the country, conditional cash transfers, and big-ticket infrastructure projects under the “Build, Build, Build” campaign.

DSWD brings e-campaign #HelptheHomelessPH closer to homeless families; holds reach out activity in Luneta

MANILA – As part of its newly launched advocacy campaign, #HelptheHomelessPH, which aims to raise public awareness on the real plight of homeless families, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) held a reach out activity for them on December 28 at the Luneta park. DSWD-Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Emmanuel Leyco lead the reach out activity. The DSWD prepared a simple meal of lugaw with chicken and egg for homeless families who

units in coming up with humane and sustainable efforts to address the plight of the homeless and care for them so they can recover and improve their lives,” said Leyco.

Through the campaign, DSWD intended to raise public awareness on the actual situation of homeless families and the reasons why they stay on the streets. It was also a call to action for everyone to take part in addressing the concerns of this vulnerable sector.

He further said, “We have programs for homeless families like the Modified Conditional Cash Transfer (MCCT) and the Comprehensive Program for the Homeless and Sama Bajau (COMPRE), but the department cannot help all homeless Filipinos on its own, given our limited budget and mandate. We appeal to various groups and private citizens to take part in this humane campaign to help the poorest families the responsible way. Let us help the homeless by sharing our time, effort, and resources. Makibahagi tayo sa ating mga naghihirap na kababayan at magbahagi tayo sa kanila ng tulong.”

The campaign also redirected public perception on giving alms on the streets which was not aligned with responsible help as it only poses more dangers to homeless families. “We must push for better and more concrete actions and programs that will end homelessness and give those who currently live in extreme poverty and want on the streets and alleyways of our cities and municipalities.
