Quality education, not revolution: Surigao Sur tribal leader By Alexander Lopez
BUTUAN CITY- A tribal leader has welcomed the government’s plan to put up a school in an upland village in the Surigao del Sur town of Lianga that the military considers a hotbed for the communist insurgency. Hawudon Jumar Bucales, the Indigenous Peoples’ Mandatory Representative (IPMR) of Lianga, alleged that the two tribal schools currently operating in Barangay Diatagon have links to the New People’s Army (NPA).
“We need quality education, not revolution,” he added. Bucales joined top government officials led by Surigao del Sur Governor Alexander Pimentel and Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Director Francis Cesar Bringas during the site inspection for the establishment of a government-run tribal school in Sitio Kilometer 9, Barangay Diatagon, on Monday (March 2).
“Our tribe wants our children to access quality education with the hope that someday, we can produce professionals who can uplift and help our tribe preserve our culture and traditions,” Bucales told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Tuesday.

Mindanao News MinDA Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said in a forum here that the orientation delved on production technology, market prospects, and funding. MinDA’s Sorghum Development Program aims to reduce poverty, increase productivity, and sustain the peace gains of the government by generating jobs and providing alternative livelihood options, Piñol said. “We will orient you on what you could do with the crop, how the LGUs (local government units) could assist in the financial aspect, and MinDA on its part, will be reaching out to our funding agency partners and also link you up with a ready market,” he said.
Sorghum stalks are used for silage for goats and cattle.
MinDA’s program partner, PILMICO Foods Corporation -- a supplier of feeds for aqua, hogs, and poultry -- has been tapped to provide the marketing component of the project.
He said MinDA aims to develop 100,000 hectares of marginal lands and ancestral domains by 2021, which would generate PHP15 billion every year.
Glen Banogon, PILMICO assistant vice president for nutrition, explained the nutrient composition, quality, and processing of sorghum as considerations in ensuring its market potentials.
During the seminar, sorghum experts facilitated a series of presentations and discussions for various representatives from the provinces of Davao del Norte, North Cotabato, Sarangani, Zamboanga Sibugay, Lanao del Sur, Bukidnon and Basilan which are slated to receive sorghum seeds donated by Scott Seeds of Texas, USA.
Piñol noted that currently, most of the sorghum requirements of domestic feed manufacturers are being sourced overseas.
“The three main considerations for sorghum are its nutritional value, availability, and cost. Press freedom ‘very much alive’ in PH: Andanar MANILA — Media outlets in the Philippines currently enjoy press freedom under the watch of President Rodrigo Duterte, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar said Tuesday. During a media engagement at the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, Switzerland, Andanar stressed that press freedom is “very much alive” since Duterte became President in 2016.
“The Philippines enjoys a longstanding history of press freedom. This should attest that press freedom is very much alive in the Philippines,” he said. His statement came as critics slammed the current administration’s supposed attempts to curtail press freedom. Some have claimed that the alleged effort to block the renewal of local broadcast firm ABS-CBN’s legislative franchise, which expires on March 30, is clearly an issue of press freedom. Andanar said the narratives against Duterte and his administration are “written out of context, some without basis, and others, outright lies.” “There are a lot of stories criticizing the government of President Rodrigo Duterte, including issues regarding media information… It is our job to challenge and to clarify these inaccurate stories, and to simply tell the truth,” he said. Andanar denied that private media companies are under attack. He said the existence of baseless and false reports to discredit Duterte merely proves that Philippine media can freely exercise the freedom of the press.
Andanar noted that the Duterte government has created an “enabling “The fact that such articles, media environment” and a “safe reports, and accounts exist, indicates

HB 2746 also creates a Commission on Press Freedom and Media Security that will serve as media workers’ safeguard from all forms of attacks and as a development center for journalism.
