News Briefs DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña together with other DOST officials and Philippine Science High School (Pisay) campus directors in the country attended today’s 5th anniversary thanksgiving celebration of Pisay Caraga held at Almont Inland Hotel in Butuan City. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) calls for direct dependents of active Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who shall enroll or currently enrolled in any four or five year baccalaureate course. For school year 2017-2018, the agency now accepts applications for the degree-granting scholarship programs.

The Department of Energy (DOE) emphasized the need to streamline regulatory processes for energy projects to speed up the provision of stable and affordable energy throughout the country. Nutrition Month is held every July of the year to create greater awareness on the importance of nutrition among Filipinos (Presidential Decree 491 s. 1974 or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines). The National Nutrition Council (NNC) leads and coordinates the nationwide campaign. The Embassy of the United States in the Philippines and its affiliated offices will be closed to the public on Tuesday, July 4, in observance of the 241st Anniv¬ersary of U.S. Services will resume on Wednesday, July 5, 2017.

UTUAN CITY- The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 13 (MGB-13) disclosed that as of June 30, 2017, there are 25 mining companies operating with permit in Caraga region. 4

Regional News BUTUAN CITY – The Caraganon students, parents and teachers have witnessed the campus inauguration and Thanksgiving celebration of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) on Thursday here, with the presence of Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Dela Peña, in his message, bared that the newly-inaugurated campus of Pisay will now be used during the opening of classes in August 7, 2017.

“Philippine Science High School (Pisay) Caraga Region Campus is the 13th Pisay campus in the country,” said Sec. Dela Peña. He also said that it will soon have its own gymnasium before the end of 2018. Also, the good secretary expressed his warm thanks to the Caraga State University (CSU) for facilitating the provision of temporary campus/classrooms for Pisay students for a couple of years while it awaits the completion of the new Pisay building. “As of now, the Philippine Science High School has 343 scholars from Grade 7 to Grade 10. We are optimistic that these scholars will be able to reach their goals and become scientists in the region,” Dela Peña highlighted. Agusan del Norte 1st District Representative Lawrence Fortun also stressed that Caraga needs more scientists that could also help enhance the agricultural facilities/technologies that farmers use.

Fortun, further elaborated to the students the importance of having a good education and encouraged them to continue to learn, and develop their skills and talent in innovating the technologies today that will also benefit the next generations. Meanwhile, Butuan City mayor Ronnie Vicente Lagnada personally congratulated all the participating students, parents and teachers. DSWD-Caraga’s assistance to Marawi IDPs reaches P14.4M

Dinagat Islands PDRRMO wins 3rd in Gawad Kalasag National Award 2016

SAN JOSE, Dinagat Islands The provincial government of Dinagat Islands through the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) was awarded by the National DRRMC as third place winner for the 2016 best PDRRMC during the18th Gawad KALASAG National Awards held in Manila. Authorities nab rebel instructor in Surigao City

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte - An alleged political instructor was recently apprehended by the joint elements of the Philippine Army (PA) and Philippine National Police (PNP) here. BUTUAN CITY - The provincial government of Agusan del Norte is now regulating the sale, manufacture, distribution and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices in the province. This came into law after the Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed and approved Provincial Ordinance No. 457-2017, otherwise known as the “Firecrackers and Pyrotechnic Devices Ordinance in the Province of Agusan del Norte,” authored by Provincial Board Member Elizabeth Marie R. Calo, during its 44th regular session recently.

The local government units through the local chief executives are mandated to cause the enactment of an ordinance that regulates the manufacture, sale, distribution and use of any firecracker and pyrotechnic device and promote an alternative form of revelry.

Any person violating the said ordinance shall be punished by a fine of P5,000.00 or imprisonment of not less than 6 motnhs or not more than 1 year, or both fine and imprisonment at the discretion of the court, in addition to the cancellation of license and business permit and the confiscation by the province of the inventory stock. Former rebels receive cash, livelihood assistance in AgSur By: Jennifer P. Gaitano

BUTUAN CITY – Three former rebels in Agusan del Sur received cash and livelihood assistance from the government thru the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Caraga on June 23, 2017 in Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur. According to 2Lt. Romel Arnado, Civil-Military Operations (CMO) Officer of 26th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army, of the three former rebels, two surrendered to 26IB while the other one surrendered to 3rd Special Forces Battalion. Arnado added that the three received from DILG and DSWD the P50,000.00 livelihood assistance and P15,000.00 cash assistance. The names of the beneficiaries under the Comprehensive Local Integration Program (CLIP) were not disclosed for their safety/security especially when they go back to the mainstream society. “The government wanted to help them cope with the normal life in their respective community and with the livelihood assistance given to them will be a good start. They can also avail of

the other programs of the government when they need to,” expressed Arnado. GSIS offers P66M emergency loan for members, pensioners in 3 VisMin areas

MANILA - The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) earmarked a total of Php66.36 million in emergency loans for active members and old-age pensioners in the municipalities of Kalilangan in Bukidnon, who were hit by a magnitude 6 earthquake, and those in Carmen and Compostela in Cebu, who were affected by Tropical Depression Crising. Active members are qualified to apply for the loan if they are residing or working in the calamity-declared area, are not on leave of absence without pay, have no arrears in paying premium contributions, and have no unpaid loans for more than six months. Deadline for filing of loan application for Kalilangan is on July 7; and for Carmen and Compostela on July 14. Those applying for the first time may avail of a Php20,000 loan, while those with existing emergency loan may borrow up to Php40,000, from which their outstanding balance will be deducted. Active members may apply through the GSIS Wireless Automated Processing System (GWAPS) kiosk located in all GSIS branch and extension offices; provincial capitols; city halls; selected municipal offices; large government agencies such as the Department of Education; Robinsons Malls; and selected SM City branches in
