Bukidnon vegetable region gets EU MINPAD RISE support Bukidnon’s vegetable production region, IMMATASULA, will be one of the focus areas of the European Unionfunded MINPAD RISE program which will be implemented starting this year. IMMATASULA stands for Impasugong, Malaybalay, Talakag, Sumilao and Lantapan, five towns identified as production areas for high value vegetables by both the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and the Department of Agriculture Northern Mindanao Region. MinDA initiated a technology transfer program in the area by conducting the Caraga INFOCUS
Mindanao Vegetable Derby while DA has started the construction of a cold storage and consolidation facility in Talakag town. The EU-funded MINPAD RISE interventions would include the establishment of irrigation facilities, farm roads and other infrastructure needed to improve the quality and increase the production of vegetables in the region. The development of the IMMATASULA Region is part of MinDA’s advocacy to create agro-industries with complete value chain targeting local markets as well as nearby foreign
markets, especially among the member countries of the BIMPEAGA sub-regional grouping and Singapore. Among the potential high-value products expected to come from the area are Potato, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Organic Lettuce, Cabbage, Carrots, Bell Pepper and Chinese Cabbage. A potato project which was implemented by the DA and Universal Robina Corp. when I was Secretary of Agriculture posted a record harvest of 50-metric tons from one hectare which proves the production potentials of the area.
