Coffee farmer from DavSur town to join Coffee Expo in US By Digna Banzon

DAVAO CITY - A coffee farmer from Bansalan, Davao del Sur will be showcasing her green coffee in a Specialty Coffee Exposition in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States next month. Marivic Dubria, who bagged first place in the Arabica Category of the Philippine Coffee Quality Competition (PCQC), told reporters during Wednesday’s Habi at Kape in Abreeza that she will bid her winning green beans at the Boston coffee expo.

the right way because I believe we could command a good price in the market,” Dubria said.

This is the second time for Dubria to join the international exposition. The first time was in Seattle, also in the US, after winning second place in PCQC 2018.

Dubria’s coffee farm is about 2.5 hectares with a total yield of 1,000 kg. per hectare per year. She said it is not easy but following good agricultural practices and the “pick red only” fruit made their green beans special.

She said joining an international event like the Specialty Coffee Expo in Boston will give farmers more knowledge in coffee growing, processing and marketing.

She said they began selling green beans at PHP100 per kg. but their specialty coffee is now priced at PHP600 per kg.

Dubria is one of 200 farmermembers of the Balutakay Coffee Farmers Association (BACOFA), who grow coffee at the foot of Mt. Apo.

PRRD to sign 2019 budget if it’s ‘consistent with Constitution’ By EJ Roque

MANILA - Malacañang on Tuesday said it is up to President Rodrigo R. Duterte whether he will veto specific realignments in the proposed 2019 national budget.

“That’s his judgment call if he’d like to review the enrolled bill and if it is consistent with the Constitution, he will sign it,” Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said in an interview with Palace reporters. On Tuesday, Senate President Vicente Sotto III announced that he has signed the proposed PHP3.7trillion national budget “with strong reservations”. Sotto also appealed to Duterte to veto “unconstitutional” provisions amid allegations that some PHP75 billion had been realigned by the House of Representatives to various lawmakers.

24

Panelo said Duterte has the right to veto certain realignments and won’t sign anything ‘unconstitutional’. “The President says he will not sign anything unconstitutional as far as he’s concerned. Abogado si Presidente eh (The President is a lawyer),” he said. He commended the members of Congress for submitting the 2019 budget after a series of delays, assuring the President will act on it immediately. “They performed their respective jobs and they have finally settled their differences, that’s why we are happy to know that they have finally submitted the enrolled bill,” he said.
