DepEd Caraga regional director Dr. Beatriz G. Torno, the 1st Regional ICT Summit is aimed to provide a forum to update DepEd ICT practitioners on emerging technologies; establish a culture of sharing on the best ICT practices implemented in the schools divisions; and to orient them on he current projects and future planes pertaining to ICT implementation within the department.

Construction of the the various facilities of the Butuan Medical Center (BMC) is in full swing as Butuan-LGU continues its commitment to enhance and improve the services of the hospital. In keeping with one of its thrusts to promote capability building of educators, the Department of Education (DepEd) Caraga, through the Caraga Regional Association of Secondary School Administrators (CARASSA), convened some 600 secondary school principals, district and division supervisors from the 12 divisions for a three-day 18th CARASSA Congress held on November 7-9, 2017 at the Gateway Hotel and Convention Center, Surigao City. Dr. Teodoro Plaza, President of CARASSA underscored that the annual activity aims to help improve the schools’ operations with the new knowledge that the participants acquired from the plenary sessions

conducted during the congress. “By joining this gathering, participants will be able to get updates on the teaching strategies, competency standards, and be reminded of the 11 - 17 November, 2017


capability of school heads values in the workplace and stewardship in the school setting. We are hoping for a more productive event in our quest for quality leadership,” said Plaza. Also, the congress aims to provide updates on the implementation of K-12 basic education curriculum and to coach the pool of school heads on how to maximize media relations. In behalf of Dr. Gilda Berte, Schools Division Superintendent of Surigao City, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Florence Almaden, noted that said congress signified that CARASSA remains firm and faithful in upholding quality education for all school learners. “I do believe this congress is a testimony to the fact that CARASSA as an association remains united and steadfast in its pursuit to high standards of school leadership, a larger perspective as a driving force in effecting quality education to our children,” Almaden said in her welcome message. In a press briefing on Tuesday (Nov. 14), at the International Media Center in Pasay City during the 31st ASEAN Summit, Mr. Geri-Geronimo Sañez, Hazardous Waste Management Section chief, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) said the joint statement will be delivered by the ASEAN at the ongoing High-Level Segment of COP23, in Bonn, Germany. DAR Project ConVERGE hosts IP forum By: Joie L. Ceballos

BUTUAN CITY – With the aim of mainstreaming the indigenous people and their welfare in the over-all implementation, the Project Convergence on Value Chain Enhancement for Rural Growth and Empowerment (Project ConVERGE) project hosted the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) Forum in Butuan City on November 7 to 8, 2017. Attended by over 100 members of various IP groups from the areas covered by the project in Regions 9, 10 and Caraga, the forum expects to integrate the IPs in the entrepreneurial activities.

Aguhob explained that the project targets to benefit not only agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs), but also the IPs, women and youth.

Under the project, 30 percent increase in income is expected, to include at least 15 percent of the IPs in areas where it is possible. Trainer Arnold Cahagnaan, an event organizer based in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur, shared to the participants the basics of floral and balloon arrangement. He also demonstrated floral arrangements suitable to various occasions such as weddings and debut. Centerpiece arrangement, ones used for bridal cars, wedding isle floral arrangement, and presidential table pieces and bouquets were introduced and demonstrated to the participants Immediately after, the participants were given time to replicate the arrangements. The balloon design was done in the morning, allowing the participants make butterflies, flowers, pillars, and arc. Meanwhile, the floral arrangement was done in the afternoon. All the outputs of the participants were used during the PESO Conference. After the agency’s activity in Siargao, the products were donated to their local government unit (LGU).

In line with the activity’s goal to empower the OFWs in their eventual venture to enterprises, Olimar Sulapas, Negosyo Center coordinator of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Siargao, introduced Negosyo Center to the participants. Sulapas informed the participants of the presence of Negosyo Centers in Siargao, where small business owners can visit to seek assistance for business registration and the like. The “unli-rice� phenomenon is proof that rice is the most commonly consumed food item of Filipinos. Rice is the staple food among Filipinos which contributes about 35.7 percent of the average daily individual food intake, making it the major source of carbohydrates in the Filipino diet. The Food Consumption Survey (FCS) by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) showed that the daily rice intake per person has risen from 272 grams in 1993 to 291 grams in 2003 and 307 grams 2008.

DSWD welcomes P60-M relief supplies from Australia

MANILA – The head of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) thanked the Australian government for its gift of PHP60 million (AUD1.5 million) worth of relief goods and associated funds. “We welcome the Australian government’s continued support. With Australia’s assistance, the DSWD has strengthened its disaster response by implementing more efficient systems – and reaching people in need more
