Dear Caramoor Friends,
T
hank you for an exciting 70th anniversary summer season! We enjoyed seeing so many of you make Caramoor your summer music home by exploring a number of classical, jazz, and American Roots music performances. Our programming now shifts to Caramoor’s historic Rosen House. This Mediterranean Revival style home offers a rare perspective on the Gilded Age and the important role art served in inspiring the daily lives of Caramoor’s founders, Lucie and Walter Rosen. Exploring the house on a tour, experiencing one of the famous teas, and hearing music in the intimacy of the Music Room provide new perspectives and memorable moments. Some of our most endearing moments at Caramoor are when children visit. This school year alone, we anticipate welcoming over 6,000 students and
James A. Attwood, Jr. Chairman
their families to our education and family programs in the Rosen House. They will explore the Renaissance, Chinese art and culture, music and architecture, and our Rising Stars in residence. This season, we continue our chamber music concerts and American Roots performances, and we look forward to welcoming jazz into the Music Room series as part of our new collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center. Over the course of the next year, you will continue to see even more improvements with the addition of WiFi, new seats, and expanded restrooms. Please contact us with any suggestions or questions you have, and don’t forget to share your pictures and enthusiasm for Caramoor online with your friends. Thank you for joining us.
Jeffrey P. Haydon CEO
P.S. Thank you to all of you who have also become members to support Caramoor as a non-profit organization; we greatly appreciate your donations! 6 Caramoor

The Bel Canto at Caramoor Young Artists Program.
E
ach year, about three dozen young singers participate in six-to-eight weeks of intensive training in vocal technique and specialized study of the ornamentation that characterizes bel canto singing. Selected by Opera Director Will Crutchfield to participate in the mentoring program, the singers study the repertoire and participate in full scale rehearsals of the summer operas presented at Caramoor, such as those listed below for 2016. The Young Artists act as understudies to the principal roles, are cast as ensemble members and in some of the supporting opera roles, and perform in recitals. Many graduates of our Bel Canto mentoring program have gone from the Caramoor stage to the world stage. Saturday / July 16, 2016 / Venetian Theater Aureliano in Palmira by Gioachino Rossini Will Crutchfield, conductor Aureliano in Palmira marks the American premiere of a major Rossini score that had remained nearly unknown until Will Crutchfield's 2014 production at the Rossini Opera Festival (Pesaro), which won first place for "Best Rediscovered Work" at the prestigious International Opera Awards presented in London by Opera magazine. Andrew Owens, Georgia Jarman, and Tamara Mumford sing the virtuosic principal roles. Jonathan Biss, 2016 Artist-in-Residence
Artists-in-Residence: Creating Personal Musical Dialogues “With increased possibility comes increased responsibility — responsibility to make your musical choices with absolute conviction and integrity. It is not selfishness, but the very essence of artistic generosity, to ignore what the world may be clamoring for, and instead ask what it is that you want to share with the world.” — Jonathan Biss In 2016, Caramoor welcomes Rising Stars alum, consummate pianist, and newly minted music educator, Jonathan Biss as Artist-in-Residence. A prodigious student of Leon Fleisher and Evelyne Brancart, and descendent of greats such as his grandmother Raya Garbousova (one of the earliest well-known female cellists, for whom Samuel Barber composed his Cello Concerto), and mother Miriam Fried (violinist), Biss returns to Caramoor in three deeply personal concerts: Sunday / July 10, 2016 Performing with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Biss delivers a program featuring the New York premiere of a Timo Andres work, written for Biss as part of his Beethoven/5 project and inspired by and paired with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Thursday / August 4, 2016 Joined by his mother, Miriam (violin), Hsin-Yun Huang (viola), and Marcy Rosen (cello), Biss presents works by Janacek and Brahms. Friday / August 5, 2016 This solo recital gives a deserved spotlight to the pianist The Telegraph calls “in complete command of an excitingly virtuosic performance.” 44 Caramoor

Caramoor’s Mission at Work. Dear Reader,
W
e are so pleased that you are able to experience Caramoor’s more intimate, quieter side: our indoor seasons. Each year, after the buzz and bustle of the summer, I feel comforted and renewed by the Rosen House. This place of serene beauty comes alive again when the children return with their school groups to learn about music and art, and when the musicians bring their magic to the Music Room stage. The indoor seasons are also beautiful examples of our donors’ investments at work. Our education program and our musician mentoring programs—all of which rely almost exclusively on charitable donations—happen in the fall and spring. The Rosen House itself, as well as the maintenance of our beautiful gardens and grounds, are visible examples of the generosity of our donor community. And the music. The music is why we do everything we do. Each of the individuals listed here has been touched in some way and has made a choice to support the music, and for that we are grateful. Three-quarters of our operating budget comes from charitable contributions, so we work hard to make that investment visible, tangible, and valuable. Our supporters keep us moving forward with focus and gratitude. I hope you will consider joining this important family of donors and supporting Caramoor with a donation of any size. With gratitude,

Caramoor / Support. Caramoor Members Caramoor Members are an integral part of the Caramoor community through their financial support and their devotion to music. Member support helps make possible year-round musical performances, young artist mentoring, and the arts-in-education programs. As some of our most dedicated concert-goers Caramoor Members have the opportunity to witness how their support significantly advances our mission. The Rosen Society The Rosen Society is composed of Caramoor donors of $2,500 and above, and is named for Walter and Lucie Rosen, who established the Caramoor estate, bequeathing it to the public as a center for music and art in 1946. Annual contributions from the Rosen Society enable Caramoor to provide world-class musical experiences each year. Thank You to Our Donors Caramoor is appreciative of all donors and their support of our mission to create inspiring artistic experiences. Space limitations do not allow us to publicly acknowledge the many individuals who have made gifts in the past year under $250; however, we are grateful to all donors as every dollar contributed positively impacts Caramoor. We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this listing. If you find an error, please accept our apology and alert us by calling 914.232.5035 ext. 259. The following are individuals and organizations who have donated during the period January 1, 2014 through August 15, 2015. Dollar-level listings reflect cumulative giving to the Annual Fund over that 18+ month period. Benefit ticketbuyers are included in this list.

The Power of Partnership: Caramoor’s Local Collaborative Programming
Caramoor@Waveny brings new musical life to the former home of the Waveny Chamber Music Society. When WCMS closed its doors in 2014, we jumped at the opportunity to present emerging artists at Waveny’s charming, 19th-century Carriage Barn in New Canaan, CT. Next Up: Sunday / April 10, 2016 / Aizuri Quartet Cultural Katonah is an alliance of three key cultural organizations – Caramoor, John Jay Homestead State Historic Site, and the Katonah Museum of Art – dedicated to providing thoughtful interdisciplinary programs that showcase Katonah as a destination. The group presents sets of thematic events year-round. Caramoor@Katonah Museum of Art is a unique collaboration that showcases emerging artists across a variety of genres in KMA’s beautiful outdoor Sculpture Garden. These early evening performances during Caramoor’s Summer Festival are ideal for families, picnickers, and adventurous music lovers. 60 Caramoor

Create Your Legacy at Caramoor. Through a charitable bequest in your will or living trust, you can ensure that the “encores” keep playing at Caramoor. We have established the Encore Society to recognize those who include Caramoor in their estate planning, and we encourage you to join this important group for Caramoor’s future. Planned giving is a wonderful way to establish your legacy and make a lasting impact on this vital arts center. Your bequest will enrich the lives of our visitors, concert-goers, arts-in-education program participants, and performing artists for generations to come. This act of forethought may well be one of the most lasting one-time gifts you ever make. All you need to do is tell us your plan is in place and that you are willing to be publicly listed as a Society member. By doing so, we can continue to applaud your generosity for years to come. If you would like more information about the Encore Society or to notify us of your intention to include the Encore Society in your estate planning, please contact Nina Curley, VP and Chief Development Officer, at 914.232.3681 or nina@caramoor.org.
