Welcome to Caramoor!

T

hank you for joining us to celebrate our 70th summer season.

There is a palpable sense of excitement at Caramoor these days. We have a fantastic program with new partners and old friends, but we also have ambitious plans for Caramoor itself – facility improvements, experience upgrades, and expanded programs. Caramoor built its legacy by presenting the leading artists of the day, including Marian Anderson, Beverly Sills, Alicia de Larrocha, Wynton Marsalis, Richard Goode, Peter Oundjian, Sonny Rollins, Julius Rudel, Sir Roger Norrington, Tokyo String Quartet, André Previn, and many more. We were also early presenters, and often mentors, of promising emergent artists. That list is even longer and includes Angela Meade, Yo-Yo Ma, Vivica Genaux, Emerson String Quartet, Lawrence Brownlee, Edward Arron, Diana Krall, Jonathan Biss, Alisa Weilerstein, Emanuel Ax, Lang Lang, Eric and Colin Jacobsen, and many others. These artists return often, and Caramoor’s Rising Star residency programs continue to develop the stars of the future.

Caramoor’s deep sense of place draws us together. Walter and Lucie Rosen, Caramoor’s founders, created an oasis to experience music, art, architecture and gardens, intermingling conversations and food with friends. This vision continues to inspire us today. We experiment with new programs and artists each year. In combination with our traditional genres we create a vibrant and refreshing experience, taking advantage of Caramoor’s idyllic campus. We are excited to be implementing further improvements at Caramoor. Last year we upgraded the Venetian Theater, and established the picnic cafe area. This year we are providing enhanced WiFi throughout the grounds for all visitors to enjoy. Going forward, we will be modernizing elements of the Rosen House – renovated restrooms, new chairs and risers in the Music Room, air conditioning and an enclosed cloisters area will be some of the improvements you’ll see next year. And there is much more to come! Your support has enabled us to make these wonderful programs and key improvements possible. Thank you. We are proud of our first 70 years and are excited about Caramoor’s future. Enjoy the music!

A Music Homecoming:

Artist Alums Reflect on Their Caramoor Experience By William Robin

“I

sn’t it always nice to come home?” Violist Nicholas Cords was not, in fact, musing about a comfortable return to his Brooklyn house. He referred instead to a home away from home: Caramoor. Since his earliest years as a professional musician, the member of acclaimed quartet Brooklyn Rider and of the Silk Road Ensemble has returned to Caramoor nearly every season to perform in intimate chamber music evenings—first as an Evnin Rising Star, and today as an alum. “You don’t have to spend time getting to know the environment and the people,” he added. “It’s more about hitting the ground running.” This summer’s festival is packed with superb artists who also plan to hit the ground running: dedicated alumni of Caramoor’s unparalleled mentoring programs for emerging professionals. Between the Bel Canto Young Artists, Evnin Rising Stars, Schwab Vocal Rising Stars, and Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-inResidence programs, Caramoor’s season is filled with brilliant and energetic young musicians who have formed lifelong bonds with the festival. In June and July, audiences can hear three acclaimed string quartets, each alums of the Stiefel residency, a year-long mentorship in which quartets balance rehearsals and performances with outreach to local schools. “It’s a quartet retreat,” said Sam Quintal, violinist of the Jasper Quartet (Stiefel alumni from 2009– 11). He fondly recalled re-organizing the record collection in the Gifford Residence and cooking dinner with his cohorts—an essential “quartet bonding experience.” Caramoor’s semi-seclusion was perfect for a youthful quartet in need of a break from the intensity of competitions but still

26 Caramoor

seeking an intensity of music making. “It’s not isolated but it feels like it,” Quintal added. “You get the musical world of New York and that diversity of arts and culture, but in a setting which is beautiful.” Members of the Dover Quartet (2013-14 Stiefel alums) concurred. “Caramoor was the one time we could really stay in one place and nurture ourselves as a whole,” said violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt. “It was truly a respite from the stresses of touring, while also being an invaluable learning experience.” For Stiefel quartets, learning comes in part from the closequarters bonding inherent to playing together in the same place for an entire season. These experiences have paid dividends; since their residencies, each quartet has won major chamber music competitions. But these residencies also represent professional development opportunities for young quartets: a chance to develop a brand, explore marketing strategies with the festival’s seasoned administrators, and create an ongoing dialogue with Caramoor’s loyal audiences. Perhaps the most valuable lesson the quartets glean from Caramoor is its embrace of the new: each year, Caramoor commissions a string quartet for its Stiefel residency from a distinguished composer. “One of the major things that changed the course of our quartet was the opportunity to commission a piece,” Quintal remarked. Working with living composers at Caramoor pushed the Jasper Quartet to become advocates for contemporary music. It is a role that they will continue on June 28, when they return to the Venetian Theater to play the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis’s String Quartet No. 3—another commission sponsored by Caramoor. Imbuing young quartets with a zeal for 27

new music is a vital and unique aspect of the residency program. Since first working with composer David Ludwig in its Stiefel year, the Dover Quartet has also regularly commissioned new works. As much as the quartets learn as part of their residencies, they also teach: Stiefel musicians participate in Caramoor’s Student Strings program in secondary schools. “Performing and working with so many different schools and kids was a special memory for the quartet,” said Dover violinist Bryan Lee. “To be so involved and integrated with the surrounding communities and to see the profound effect that music has, it's extremely rewarding and gratifying.” The Jasper Quartet had the rare fortune to serve as Quartet-in-Residence for two years in a row, and Quintal described his enthusiasm for building longtime relationships with the students, with whom he has stayed in touch. “It was a great opportunity to have a very concentrated quartet time, together with giving back to the community, and connecting to the younger generation,” said Sasha (Alexandra) Kazovsky of the Ariel Quartet, in residence from 2008–09. The collaborative spirit of the Stiefel residency will certainly be on display on July 5, when the Ariel and Dover Quartets combine forces for Mendelssohn’s sparkling Octet. Members of the two quartets have played with each other in varying capacities over the years, but this marks the first time that all eight players will be united on stage. “It’ll be a reunion and a new relationship all at once,” Pajaro-van de Stadt said. “Collaborating 28 Caramoor

with another quartet is very special, because every group is different and works differently, and it's always fascinating to realize how much we share in common and how similar things can be done differently,” Sasha added. Caramoor’s mentoring programs, of course, are not limited to the world of strings. The festival’s strong grounding in bel canto opera allows for emerging singers to work closely with seasoned pros, with concentrated training in classical technique and historical performance. Last summer as an Apprentice Artist, mezzo-soprano JoAna Rusche worked closely with Director of Opera Will Crutchfield and performed alongside distinguished soprano and festival regular Angela Meade. “At Caramoor, each singer is not only trained to perform their music beautifully but also to perform it, essentially, within a historically informed performance practice,” she said. Rusche is excited to return this year and sing the role of Soeur Mathilde in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites (July 25): “Caramoor is as beautiful as it is inspirational, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to perform again at one of my favorite places.” Working closely with many of the instrumental artists—while always remaining a part of the community—is cellist Edward Arron, who has performed at Caramoor for every one of the past twenty-two years. “I can almost track my own evolution as a musician by just thinking back across all those experiences that I had there,” Arron told me. Those two decades of experience have included everything from stepping

onto a Caramoor stage for the first time as a sixteen-year-old student, to playing Vivaldi’s Double Concerto alongside YoYo Ma on Opening Night, to consistent torrents of rain accompanying each of his concerts. (Arron referred to himself as “the Caramoor rainmaker,” as nearly all of his summer shows were interrupted by what he called “biblical rainstorms.”)

André Previn, the legendary conductor, composer, pianist, and former Caramoor music director. “What was amazing about that experience – and this is built into the ethos of Caramoor – was that it actually could be an ageless musical experience,” Arron said. “Once we were actually rehearsing, there was no hierarchy, but that we all behaved as equals.”

Today, the cellist leads Edward Arron & Friends, a series of chamber performances that bring together various Caramoor alumni. On June 26, Arron is joined by Cords and three other alums in an evening of Hummel, Beethoven, and Richard Strauss. It is a quintessential Caramoor experience, with familiar faces shedding light on unfamiliar repertoire (in this case, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to hear Ferdinand Ries’s peculiar piano quartet arrangement of Beethoven’s epic “Eroica” Symphony).

Returning summer after summer builds not only a deeply cooperative musicianship—that artists can, together, hit the ground running each season—but also an essential sense of constancy. “Giving an artist the feeling of that kind of loyalty, back and forth, creates more confident artistry,” Cords said. “It also allows an audience to come along that journey with you, and to see the way that things develop over time.”

“Caramoor is as beautiful as it is inspirational …” – JoAna Rusche, Bel Canto Young Artist The common thread between these mentoring programs is that they represent a rare opportunity where boundaries between student and teacher, young professional and seasoned master, are blurred to the point that true musical encounters take place. “I learned the aesthetic of chamber music,” Cords said of his early Caramoor seasons. “The degree to which you can be flexible with somebody else’s idea, and incorporate that into the best version of yourself as a performer.” Cords and Arron both had powerful memories of playing alongside

Arron added, “I don’t really know of another place quite like Caramoor— that can allow for things to evolve so organically and be so inclusive of anyone who is or has been a member of the family.” For its 70th festival this summer, Caramoor represents not only a space for bold exploration of new music and egalitarian collaboration but also, once again, a family reunion.

f all the operatic works restored to life in our age of revivals, the most extensive and enduring group has been the products of the bel canto school – Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, Vincenzo Bellini, and the young Giuseppe Verdi. Between 1808 and 1850 these masters produced some 125 works of musical theater in a style that made Italian opera the world's most popular art form. Later, the shifting winds of taste swept all but about ten of these operas from regular use. But beginning with the spectacular example of Maria Callas, and continuing through Marilyn Horne, Joan Sutherland, and Beverly Sills, exciting artists have rediscovered the lapsed skills of bel canto singing and revealed dozens of masterpieces anew to modern audiences. In 1997, following the success of a Caramoor production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola that introduced Vivica Genaux to New York, we decided to establish a formal concentration on bel canto opera, and Bel Canto at Caramoor was born. 1997 Handel: Alcina Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro Rossini: La donna del lago 1998 Donizetti: Lucrezia Borgia Handel: Deidamia Mozart: Don Giovanni

Why Music?

I

By Katie Steedly

have been thinking about the world of hard edges, steep climbs, and too many clenched fists. I have been thinking about connection, escape, and roots. I have been thinking about rhythm, harmony, and tone. When I was a child, music was my refuge. I would sit for hours listening to my bright yellow 8-track tape player and sing at the top of my lungs. I did not mind that no one was listening. Joy needs no audience. Simple freedom wrapped in a melody was all that mattered. What I knew for sure was nothing could quiet my soul when I connected with music. I was fully alive.

Music changes hearts, and changed hearts change the world. Can you recall your first memories inspired by music? Your first dance, your first vinyl record, your college fight song, your national anthem, your favorite hymn? Music locates memories in a particular time and space. Music transports with the force of a tidal wave and the finesse of a bird’s wing. Music has the power to situate, evoke, and inspire. There is something simultaneously individual and communal about music. Music is the intersection of personal memories and shared experience. Music is where emotions stand side-by-side, and numbness and indifference are shed. Two plus two equals more than four when set to music. Music is the soil of common ground. Music changes hearts, and changed hearts change the world. Caramoor was founded on the belief that music matters. Walter and Lucie Rosen understood music matters in profound, vital, and 34 Caramoor

life-affirming ways. They celebrated innovation by sponsoring new music. They connected music to story and culture to keep history alive. They embraced travel and curated global consciousness through music. In founding Caramoor, they created a place that fosters artistic excellence across generations by sponsoring music residencies and mentoring opportunities. Caramoor bears witness to both their love for each other and music. Walter and Lucie’s story resonates on many levels. I can picture Lucie performing on the Theremin. I can picture Walter playing the piano as a child. I can picture Lucie introducing concerts at Caramoor later in her life, and hosting grand parties with music wafting through the Caramoor estate. Music was in their hearts and they brought music to the world. Walter and Lucie knew the same thing I know. Music matters because it speaks to the human spirit. Music says, “In darkness, may you find light. In despair, may you find hope. In weakness, may you find strength. In listening, may you find understanding. In celebration, may you find connection. In appreciation, may you find joy.” Katie Steedly is the creator of The WideAwakeness Project, and author of The Stage is on Fire. She holds a Ph.D. in Education, and her work has been featured in such publications as Washingtonian Magazine. Learn more at www.katiesteedly.com. 35

R

oots Music is music with terroir – a sound with a sense of place. That place might be a juke joint in Mississippi, a front porch in Appalachia, a dance hall in the Texas panhandle, or a church in Oklahoma. Could be the silence of the plains, or the swamp of the bayou. And embedded in that place are the hopes, dreams, desires, fears, and sentiments of everyday folks – all expressed in Roots Music.

Lucinda Williams

This summer, we feature a veritable gumbo of artists – all in the context of Caramoor’s unique terroir. So bring your ears, a friend or three, and enjoy the rich variety of American Roots Music with a little folk, country, blues, string band, bluegrass, gospel, early jazz, and inventive variations on all. n this colorful and wide-ranging outdoor fall event, The Knights team up with the inimitable cellist Yo-Yo Ma for music that bursts with individual creativity and fresh insights. For the young Mendelssohn, immersion in the arts and culture of Italy inspired a new symphony. In Federico II, Giovanni Sollima takes inspiration from the 13th-century Holy Roman Emperor who paved the way for the advances of the Renaissance. In Osvaldo Golijov’s Azul (written for Yo-Yo Ma in 2006) the composer combines two perspectives, simultaneously observing the Earth from afar, as if from the heavens, and also plunging into the turbulent depths of the human and earthly experience.

Caramoor’s Mission at Work. Dear Friends,

W

elcome to Caramoor! There is no better place to be during the summer season, and we’re so glad you’ve chosen to spend some time with us in this beautiful place.

As a not-for-profit organization, Caramoor relies significantly on charitable contributions as the key source of income. On these pages, you’ll find the names of long-time donors, special event attendees, friends and family members honoring loved ones, and people who prefer to donate anonymously. We are always delighted to find new contributors when Festival guests, like you, choose to become Members by making a contribution. All these donations are part of our Annual Fund, which provides more than 70% of our operating budget each year. Members provide the bulk of Caramoor’s revenue and are the lifeblood of our organization, allowing us to continue investing in musical presentation, musician mentoring, and music education. We are grateful to all donors for supporting these three pillars of our mission, for allowing us to flourish, and for the generosity they show us each year. None of what you see (and hear) is possible without them. Thank you for taking to time to be here with us this summer. We hope that you’ll come back and see us many times in the future. Please consider joining with those you see on the following pages as contributors to this very special place.

Create Your Legacy at Caramoor. Through a charitable bequest in your will or living trust, you can ensure that the “encores” keep playing at Caramoor. We have established the Encore Society to recognize those who include Caramoor in their estate planning, and we encourage you to join this important group for Caramoor’s future. Planned giving is a wonderful way to establish your legacy and make a lasting impact on this vital arts center. Your bequest will enrich the lives of our visitors, concert-goers, arts-in-education program participants, and performing artists for generations to come. This act of forethought may well be one of the most lasting one-time gifts you ever make. All you need to do is tell us your plan is in place and that you are willing to be publicly listed as a Society member. By doing so, we can continue to applaud your generosity for years to come. If you would like more information about the Encore Society or to notify us of your intention to include the Encore Society in your estate planning, please contact Nina Curley, VP and Chief Development Officer, at 914.232.3681 or nina@caramoor.org.
