Dear Caramoor Friends,
W
elcome to a summer filled with music throughout Caramoor’s 90 acres of verdant gardens, grounds, and Mediterraneanstyle venues. This season, Caramoor has carefully curated a diverse range of captivating music experiences for you, taking place over eight weeks. We invite you to visit us throughout the summer to explore new artists and sample our selections of classical, jazz, American Roots, and American Songbook performances. We are thrilled to welcome back a star alumnus of Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars program (from 1998) as our 2016 Artist-In-Residence: pianist Jonathan Biss. As part of Jonathan’s residency, he’ll present the New York premiere of The Blind Banister, the first work of his Beethoven/5 project, written by the rousing Brooklyn composer Timo Andres. Co-commissioned by Caramoor and Orchestra of St. Luke’s in collaboration with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, this work was recently named a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

As we continue our ongoing efforts to improve Caramoor, we encourage you to visit the historic Rosen House to see the improvements we have made inside. We have also begun the first phase of our work to preserve the outside of the Rosen House by repairing select chimneys. Please take a moment to tour this beautiful gem at Caramoor and return to hear performances in the Music Room this fall. We also want to express a special thanks to the 800+ Caramoor Members who, in addition to purchasing tickets to concerts, have made a tax-deductible donation to support Caramoor. Individual donations provide nearly 75% of what Caramoor needs each year to subsidize the quality programs you enjoy, provide education programs for students and mentoring programs for emerging artists, and maintain this beautiful historic site. For those of you who are Members, thank you! If you are not yet a Member, we encourage you to become a Member by visiting the Box Office or visiting caramoor.org. Ten Reasons to Keep Coming Back With a 90-acre estate, three performance venues, 30+ concerts, and multiple gardens to explore, we wanted to give you a quick breakdown of the top reasons to make Caramoor your summer music destination. by Emma Corey edited by Morgan Boecher, Mary Cornell
1.
Our part of the world is shockingly beautiful.
With our new Katonah shuttle, it’s never been easier to make Caramoor your go-to summer spot. This free transportation option takes you to and from the Katonah Metro-North Station, winding its way through historic Jay Street, and dropping you in the center of 90 acres of pastoral gardens and greenery. Thanks to First Niagara Foundation’s support for making this project possible!
2.
Your ears deserve great music.
Listening to music has been linked to positive body and brain function. Hearing a good tune can produce excess dopamine, mitigate pain, improve motor skills, and help with memory loss. Why wouldn’t you want to take in as many performances as possible?
You’ve yet to explore the Monkey Bedroom.
Every inch of our historic Rosen House is covered in fine art. But this isn’t your standard luxury home; it’s a veritable explorer’s paradise. Our founders were diehard lovers of culture, collecting the bed of a 17th-century Pope, jade figurines from China, and entire rooms from Italy, France, and England. Take a tour and see the world. 26 Caramoor

4.
Our burger is really, really good.
Prepared by the skilled chefs of New York’s Great Performances, this burger’s organic, locallysourced ingredients meld harmoniously into one of the most delicious things you’ll taste all summer. Our Food + Drink area also offers sandwiches, ice cream, kid-friendly options, an array of local wine, beer, snacks, and gourmet picnics.
The grass is always greener.
Where else can you hear a full symphony, dueling brass, or a lone banjo while traipsing, barefoot, through thick grass with a frisbee in hand and your family in tow? Check out our Garden Listening option for Sunday performances and while away the afternoon on the Picnic Lawn.
5.
Nothing goes better with Beethoven than an icy beverage on a summer day.
6. Zephyr and Flora want to meet you.
Have you spotted the wroughtiron pied piper on the west end of Center Walk or the stone horseheads peeking through the trees just east of the Venetian Theater? How about the Greek god of the west wind and the Roman goddess of flowers framed by a stand of 30-foot evergreens? If your answers are ‘no,’ keep reading. 28 Caramoor
Our Hide and Seek options await.
Take an hour before or after your next Caramoor performance to get a little lost. Steal a quiet moment away from the crowd or share a world of flora and fauna with family. Our lush gardens and grounds are ripe for discovery. Flip to page 19 to find yourself again.
9.
8. You like to give as much as you get.
But you love to get, too. Our audience members recognize the value of supporting great music and often become lifelong Caramoor Members, giving them access to Members-only pre-sales and events, artist meet-andgreets, free swag, and more. Member donations support everything we do—from the concert you’re experiencing today, to emerging artist mentoring and music education programs for kids, to the upkeep of this historic hideaway.
10.
High art and casual play are our bailiwick. A highlight this summer is the sheer volume of Beethoven works being performed throughout, on the programs of Wu Han, Philip Setzer, and David Finckel; Evnin Rising Stars' Showcase; the Aizuri Quartet; Jonathan Biss; Orchestra of St. Luke’s; Pacifica Quartet; our Bel Canto Young Artists; and the Danish String Quartet. We’re also presenting his only opera, Fidelio.
Caramoor is timeless.
7.
We’re seventy-one years young and evolving every day. As we push our artistic vision further and work to make your experiences better, we hope you’ll be a part of it all! Exciting upgrades are in the works which will help us continue to serve as a destination and inspiration for music lovers of all ages. Stay in the know by subscribing to our e-news, following us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and–of course–paying us another visit.
Welcome to Caramoor.

An Interview with Jonathan Biss, 2016 Artist-in-Residence.

hy devote one’s life so singularly to the music of Beethoven? Or Robert Schumann? The pianist Jonathan Biss—halfway through a nineyear recording traversal of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas, in the midst of a massive commissioning project that asks living composers to respond to Beethoven’s concertos, and having already undertaken a large-scale series that reflected on the legacy of Schumann—pondered the question in a recent interview.
This summer at Caramoor, Biss’s intellectual and artistic wrestling match will take place over three performances, as the thirty-five-year old pianist assumes the position of 2016 Artist-in-Residence. He will present an immersion in a range of repertoire, from Beethoven to Janáček to a new concerto by the celebrated young composer Timo Andres. “If you’re going to play music, one thing you need is the will to go deeply into it,” he added. “It doesn’t make it easier, but at least I never lacked the desire to find out more and more.”
“That’s just really about me being an obsessive person,” he said. It wasn’t so much a desire to uphold a great tradition, or a zeal for championing the classics, or the impetus of a particular mentor. “I don’t really think that anybody can be credited or blamed for that particular phenomenon. I guess I have that side to my personality, that when I do something, I really want to do it one-hundred-and-ten percent: look at it from all angles, turn it over in my mind, and wrestle with it.”
That thirst for depth itself has deep roots for Biss, extending past his childhood and into the womb. The semi-serious biography that he displays on his website—an example of the pianist’s dry wit—describes his “professional debut” as preceding his birth, when his mother Miriam Fried performed a Mozart violin concerto at Carnegie Hall while pregnant. Biss represents the third generation of an intensely musical family: his grandmother, Raya Garbusova, premiered Samuel Barber’s Cello Concerto. “Music 33
was around all the time,” he told me, recounting an infancy in which his mother might be practicing in the bedroom, his brother in the living room, and his father in the bathroom. “That, probably, was more important than I can even put into words: the fact that music was the spoken language in the house.” As one might imagine, such a household environment fueled a lifelong passion for chamber music. Biss plays regularly with Fried, and they will perform an evening of Brahms and Janáček with other close musical friends at Caramoor on August 4. “My mother was the first person I ever heard play anything,” he said. “There are certain things—gut feelings one has about how a phrase is shaped, and where and how one breathes—and I think we experience those things so similarly.” Biss is heralded for his collaborative spirit; a New York Times review of a 2013 performance with the Elias String Quartet described his “sensitive, elegant pianism.” As a prodigious teenage pianist, Biss wasn’t quite sure of his musical path, until a particularly memorable performance with the Indianapolis Symphony. “That was the moment when performing became a thrilling thing,” he said. “That was when that really overtook me.” For the most part, he managed to avoid the rat race of competitions that mark the typical early careers of pianists, instead engrossing himself in study. He discovered Schumann’s cycle Kreisleriana—the first piece that he worked on that wasn’t assigned by a teacher—and became consumed with the composer’s fantastical, stream-of-consciousness writing. A few seasons ago, he mounted “Schumann: Under the Influence,” a multifaceted project that advocated for the oft-derided Romantic and examined his impact in music history. At age sixteen, Biss entered the elite Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with the legendary performer and pedagogue Leon Fleisher. He was drawn to “the intensity of his integrity, the sense 34 Caramoor
that he gives his students and listeners of being honest and being the guardian of the composer’s idea.” And Biss was fascinated by Fleisher’s sound: “It gives the illusion of the piano not having hammers: the sound seems to glow, and sustain endlessly.” “I’ve been searching for something very related to it, in the fifteen years since I left his studio,” he added. It was at Caramoor, in fact, that Biss crafted a stronger connection to his mentor. As a Rising Star in 1998 he worked side-by-side with Fleisher, in the nonhierarchical environment that Caramoor’s mentoring programs have always fostered. “Everyone plays together, eats meals together, and there are no teachers and students,” he said. Despite Biss’s old-world tendencies as an interpreter, he has recently found himself embracing the kind of entrepreneurial career increasingly necessary in the twenty-first century. Along with teaching at Curtis—the prodigal son joined the school’s faculty in 2011—he designed an online class on Beethoven’s sonatas through the web platform Coursera. More than 35,000 people registered for its first session. “Practically at birth, I’ve been around great musicians, and I’ve been the beneficiary of a hell of a lot of musical knowledge,” he said. “I don’t know if I can pass it on, necessarily, but it’s nice to feel that you’re part of a process by which information continues to be transmitted.” And his eloquent writing about music, not unlike the aesthetic discourses of the kind for which his idol Artur Schnabel was known, exists in a cutting-edge platform: he has published two e-books for the Kindle. Lately, Biss has preferred involved projects to one-off concerts. Curating three evenings as Artist-in-Residence at his old stomping grounds of Caramoor, then, represents an opportunity to explore all the facets of his musical personality. “It’s concerto playing and recital playing and chamber music,” he said. “A cross section of all the different things that matter to me.”
As a classical musician in an economy increasingly precarious for the arts, Biss is hesitant about, but also encouraged by, the new climate. In a 2014 convocation address at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, he celebrated the new and unforeseen artistic challenges that online courses and do-it-yourself concert programs offered. “‘Career’ is such an ugly word, particularly for something that ought to be a calling,” he told the students. “There really is not any good reason, at all, to be a musician other than that you love music,” Biss said to me. “It’s a great thing that young musicians don’t necessarily have to wait to be offered a debut, or win a competition, to bring projects into the world. But I also think that because you can do things your own way, there are so many more wrong ways of doing things than there used to be, and wrong reasons for
“There really is not any good reason, at all, to be a musician other than that you love music …” doing things than there used to be. I really hope that the people who are entering the world of music now see it as not just a possibility, but a responsibility to ask themselves, ‘What do I love about music? What is it about music I really would like to share?’ And then find a way to do it.” That sense of responsibility has informed his recent commissioning project, Beethoven/5. Over five years, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra will present five new works written for Biss which each respond to a different Beethoven piano concerto. The composers include an eclectic mix of figures, from the Pulitzer Prize-winning Kanye West collaborator Caroline Shaw, to Italian avant-gardist Salvatore Sciarrino. Biss isn’t drawn to any particular style of contemporary music, instead letting his ears be his guide. “The two kinds of music that I know of are the music that I like and the music that I don’t like,” he said.
“Working on new music is something that feels very necessary,” he added. “Right now I’m working on the Schubert A-Major Sonata, and the most distinctive features— the ones that I’m sure were part of the germ of the piece—they’re not there, in the sketches. I understand, really, very little about how a great composer comes to an idea and then expands upon it. And getting to work with living composers makes me a little bit less in the dark about this whole process.” On July 10, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Biss will present the New York premiere of Timo Andres’s rippling concerto The Blind Banister. “I certainly did have Jonathan’s playing in mind,” Andres told me. “There’s an angular quality to his performances that I wanted to capture and play with, a decisiveness and distinctiveness to each gesture.” And the composer provided evidence that Biss’s inquisitive spirit extends far beyond the keyboard. “I went over to Jonathan’s apartment for dinner a couple months ago, and I brought as a housewarming present a jar of kumquat marmalade I’d made,” Andres noted. “Over the next day, I received a flood of questions about the marmalade from Jonathan, who planned to serve it alongside a cake he’d made—did I think the marmalade belonged on top of an almond cake, and if so, should it be applied just after baking, or after cooling? Should the marmalade be warmed prior? Or maybe it should be an optional accouterment? Powdered sugar, or no?” “The takeaway from this is that Jonathan is not just a surprisingly accomplished baker, but a highly thoughtful and analytical one, as well.” William Robin is a Ph.D. candidate at University of North Carolina, currently completing a dissertation on contemporary classical music in the United States in the twenty-first century. He is a regular contributor to The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Bandcamp. In the fall he will begin a position as assistant professor at the University of Maryland. As part of the League of American Orchestras’ Orchestra Management Fellowship Program, Mr. Haydon worked with the Baltimore Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and Seattle Symphony. Paul Rosenblum Managing Director
Appointed Managing Director in 2001, Paul Rosenblum had been General Manager of the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts since the summer of 1992. As part of the management team with then-Executive Director Howard Herring and Artistic Advisor André Previn, it was his particular mission to enhance Caramoor’s unique status and stature through the modernization and upgrading of the facility, artistic administration, staff, and marketing. Moved by a special affinity for Caramoor’s timeless and magical serenity, beauty, intimacy and elegance, Mr. Rosenblum has used his experience to contribute to Caramoor’s blossoming and recognition as the home of one of America’s finest summer music festivals. Paul Rosenblum is a native New Yorker. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School and received the degrees of Bachelor of Music and Master of Science in Music Performance from The Juilliard School, where he studied the French Horn. In addition to extensive professional experience in orchestral and chamber music, and ten years in the advertising business, he was Director of Operations for Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the resident orchestra of the Caramoor Summer Music Season, prior to becoming General Manager of Caramoor.

Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL) is one of America’s most versatile and distinguished orchestras, collaborating with the world’s greatest artists and performing approximately 80 concerts each year—including its Carnegie Hall Orchestra Series, Chamber Music Series at The Morgan Library & Museum and Brooklyn Museum, and the Caramoor Summer Season. In its 41-year history, OSL has commissioned more than 50 new works, has given more than 175 world, U.S., and New York City premieres; and has appeared on more than 100 recordings, including four Grammy Award winners and seven releases on its own label, St. Luke’s Collection. Pablo Heras-Casado is OSL’s principal conductor. OSL grew out of a chamber ensemble that began giving concerts at the Church of St. Luke in the Fields in Greenwich Village in 1974. Today, the 21 virtuoso artists of St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble make up OSL’s artistic core.
including more than 400 ensembles and artists such as Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Itzhak Perlman, Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Valery Gergiev, James Levine, James Taylor, and Sting. OSL hosts hundreds of neighbors, families, and school children at its home each year for free community events. Through its Education & Community programs, OSL has introduced audiences across New York City to live classical music. OSL brings free chamber concerts to the five boroughs; offers free interactive music programs at The DiMenna Center; provides chamber music coaching for adult amateurs; and engages 10,000 public school students each year through its Free School Concerts. In 2013, OSL launched Youth Orchestra of St. Luke’s (YOSL), an intensive in- and after-school instrumental instruction program emphasizing musical excellence and social development, in partnership with community organizations and public schools in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. More information at OSLmusic.org.
OSL owns and operates The DiMenna Center for Classical Music in Midtown Manhattan, where it shares a building with the Baryshnikov Arts Center. The DiMenna Center is New York City’s premier venue for rehearsal, recording, and learning, having quickly gained a reputation for its superb acoustics, state-of-the-art facilities, and affordability. Since opening in 2011, The DiMenna Center has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors, Orchestra of

Caramoor’s Mission at Work. Dear Reader,
S
ummer is a time of excitement and exploration, and the days and nights at Caramoor are filled with both this year. All year long, artists, artistic directors, and our staff are planning and preparing for the musical journey we will go on together during the summer season — and now it is here! Thank you for coming with us as we discover new works, savor classic favorites, celebrate new rising stars, and reacquaint ourselves with old friends. We will all, no doubt, leave Caramoor changed by these experiences. The journey we take together this summer is only possible because of the generosity of the many Caramoor supporters who are listed in the following pages. Three-quarters of our revenue comes from contributions. It is because of these remarkable people, foundations, and businesses that we are able to be here, in this beautiful place, listening to the artists and to each other. Everything we do is infused with gratitude to our donors. With every note played, we say thank you to them for helping us bring music to Caramoor and the community around us. Caramoor’s contributors come from all over the county, the country, and the world, and bring different musical interests and perspectives with them. They value their experience at Caramoor and the musical journey that they have joined. We are truly grateful to them for their generosity. We hope you, too, might consider joining this group of passionate explorers and support Caramoor with a contribution of your own. Again, thank you for coming to Caramoor this summer. We’re glad to see you. With gratitude,

Caramoor / Support. Caramoor Members Caramoor Members are an integral part of the Caramoor community through their financial support and their devotion to music. Member support helps make possible year-round musical performances, young artist mentoring, and the arts-in-education programs. As some of our most dedicated concert-goers Caramoor Members have the opportunity to witness how their support significantly advances our mission. The Rosen Society The Rosen Society is composed of Caramoor donors of $2,500 and above. Rosen Society members enjoy a number of benefits, such as an invitation to the annual Rosen Society Dinner hosted by Caramoor’s Chairman and CEO, and access to select private rehearsals and concert receptions. Walter and Lucie Rosen established the Caramoor estate, bequeathing it to the public as a center for music and art in 1946. Annual contributions from the Rosen Society enable Caramoor to provide world-class musical experiences each year. Thank You to our Donors Caramoor is appreciative of all donors and their support of our mission to create inspiring artistic experiences. Space limitations do not allow us to publicly acknowledge the many individuals who have made gifts in the past year under $250; however, we are grateful to all donors as every dollar contributed positively impacts Caramoor. aramoor’s special events are a vital part in raising necessary funds for our core programming, as well as a great opportunity to thank our members who help foster musical inspiration. Events from the past year included Cabaret in the Music Room, a decadent Wine Dinner supporting the Education Programs, Paris Jazz Soirée in the Rosen House, a sparkling Opening Night Gala, plus Members-only meet and greet receptions with the artists. Caramoor is grateful to the event cochairs and committees for making these occasions so successful and memorable.

Create Your Legacy at Caramoor
Through a charitable bequest in your will or living trust, you can ensure that the “encores” keep playing at Caramoor.
We have established the Encore Society to recognize those who include Caramoor in their estate planning, and we encourage you to join this important group for Caramoor’s future. Planned giving is a wonderful way to establish your legacy and make a lasting impact on this vital arts center. Your bequest will enrich the lives of our visitors, concert-goers, arts-in-education program participants, and performing artists for generations to come. This act of forethought may well be one of the most lasting one-time gifts you ever make. All you need to do is tell us your plan is in place and that you are willing to be publicly listed as a Society member. By doing so, we can continue to applaud your generosity for years to come. If you would like more information about the Encore Society or to notify us of your intention to include the Encore Society in your estate planning, please contact Nina Curley, VP and Chief Development Officer, at 914.232.3681 or nina@caramoor.org.
