In 1830–31 he wrote a series of brilliant one-act “operettas” with piano accompaniment, to be performed by his students. Artist-in-Residence Angela Meade, whose revelatory Caramoor performance of the same composer’s Norma was hailed as “a truly perfect night at the opera” by Das Opernglas, takes on the demanding role of Imogene for the first time in her stellar career. Tenor Santiago Ballerini, who triumphed here two seasons ago in La favorite, returns as Gualtiero, joined by the brilliant young bass Harold Wilson in his Caramoor debut.

Rossini surprised the musical world by retiring from the theater when he was only 37; he astonished it by emerging at nearly twice that age to compose “the last mortal Sin of my Old Age,” his Petite Messe Solennelle (1864), containing some of his most beautiful and expressive music. Liszt’s tone poem Les préludes opens the program followed by French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet’s characteristic “fiery account” (The Washington Post) of the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Schumann’s Second Symphony tells the story of his personal triumph over adversity. Set in the bright key of C Major, this uplifting symphony brings the Caramoor summer season to a properly sunny close.
