2018 Summer Season
Audra McDonald
Music keeps moving.
Artists build new sounds from the gifts of tradition, tastes and trends evolve, and inspiration sparks new creative connections. Caramoor keeps tempo with these changes, celebrating our past while looking toward the future. This summer, we present fresh pathways for connecting to music in a personal and meaningful way — from Baroque music on a summer afternoon, to an opera performed in a garden, to music from far corners of the globe, to music by living composers and site-specific sound art. This is your music journey. See where it takes you. About Caramoor
We believe that music opens hearts and minds, igniting curiosity and joy within ourselves and each other. Founded in 1945 by Walter and Lucie Rosen, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts is a destination in the New York metro area for outstanding music, captivating educational programs, spectacular gardens and grounds, and valuable memories with friends and family. Explore our lush 90 acres, tour the Rosen House, enjoy a pre-concert picnic, and discover beautiful music in the relaxed settings of the Venetian Theater, Spanish Courtyard, and magnificent gardens.

New Artists for 2018
Music and Fun for Families
Sonic Innovations continues to expand Caramoor’s programming with an annual exhibition of sound art, curated by Stephan Moore, from artists working with sonic materials outside the traditions of concert music. Each artist has drawn inspiration from their chosen location, creating work that is mindful of the natural and human-made sounds and systems already present in the environment, while engaging each site’s unique characteristics — be they acoustic, historic, architectural, or natural.
Walter Kitundu Kitundu creates kinetic sculptures and sonic installations, develops public works, builds (and performs on) extraordinary musical instruments, while studying and documenting the natural world. In 2008, he received a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in recognition of his work and creative potential. His piece Nafasi Yako Ni Ya Kijani (Your Place is Green) will live this summer at Caramoor as an invitation for reflection and introspection.
Enjoy family concerts, our popular Dancing at Dusk series with interactive performances and crafts, acres of play space among our gardens and grounds, outdoor scavenger hunts during day-long festivals, and much more. Caramoor is a place for the whole family!
Paula Matthusen Matthusen is a composer who writes both electroacoustic and acoustic music and realizes sound installations. In addition to writing for a variety of ensembles, she collaborates with choreographers and theater companies. She has written for diverse instrumentations, such as “run-on sentence of the pavement” for piano, ping-pong balls, and electronics, which Alex Ross of The New Yorker called “entrancing.” She is creating a new installation work for Caramoor, appearing this summer. Free and open during Box Office hours and on concert days this summer. Learn more and see all of Caramoor's sound art pieces at: caramoor.org/sonic-innovations
