Celebrate the arrival of the 2019 Summer Season at this year’s Groundbreaking Gala! On Caramoor’s biggest and grandest night of the year, we begin to enjoy the sounds of summer and break ground on the improvement projects that will happen at the end of the season. The evening begins with a cocktail reception and dinner. Then, enjoy premium concert seating in the Venetian Theater and stay for the After Dark post-performance party for dessert and dancing under the stars. Tickets for the Gala start at $750, inclusive of the concert. Individual and Table options are available. A portion of the tickets is tax-deductible, as provided by law. 8:00pm / Spanish Courtyard Tribu Baharú’s exuberant performances of champeta music — a fusion of Colombian, African, and Afro-Caribbean styles — are driven by lively vocals, sparkling Congolese guitar, and high-energy bass and drums. A Tribu Baharú performance recreates the joyous, impromptu spirit of the verbena dances that are popular in Colombian neighborhoods during festivals. With traces of soukous, zouk, calypso, soca, rap, and more, Tribu Baharú celebrates the colorful Colombian musical spectrum.

New Works for 2019 Gayle Young and REITZENSTEIN: Tonally Inclined Gayle Young explores the nature of environmental sound through a process she calls tonal landscape, extracting and amplifying the harmonic frequencies of natural soundscapes. REITZENSTEIN, the Allegorical Minimalist, creates sculptural artworks using inverted trees and parts of the natural world immortalized in bronze. In their new

collaborative work for Caramoor, an uprooted tree leans against a system of tuned tubes, from which voices emanate. Miya Masaoka: Listen Ahead Miya Masaoka is a composer and artist who creates works involving perception, temporality, and interaction between objects, people, and nature. Masaoka’s new work for Caramoor is first encountered as traffic signage that anticipates a space for listening. Later, a wooden listening hut is discovered.
