Dear Friends, Welcome to our Spring 2021 season. We are thrilled to present this exceptional array of artists, brought to you from our Music Room in The Rosen House. We are overjoyed that, starting April 2, we are able to bring a limited-capacity audience into this venue while we continue livestreaming our concerts as well. Over the past year, Caramoor – like many performing arts organizations everywhere – has focused on streaming concerts in a profound effort to keep the music playing. We are incredibly appreciative of the artists who have joined us on this journey, and we are deeply grateful to you, our dedicated audience members, who have allowed us to transport the music directly into your homes. Our eight concerts this spring include a vocal recital by one of today’s leading bass-baritones, two string quartets from our Ernst Stiefel Quartetin-Residence program, a spirited Baroque band, a legendary jazz singer, and more. We are also pleased to continue a new video series we started this fall, Caramoor Conversations, designed to deepen our audiences’ connection to the musicians and composers that we have presented. I am so excited to share that, in May, Caramoor will welcome Edward J. Lewis III as our new President & CEO. Ed has two decades of experience in performing arts leadership. An accomplished violist, Ed is a demonstrated leader, innovator, and musician with a long roster of accomplishments. He will be coming to us from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he is currently Vice-Chancellor for Advancement. We can’t wait to introduce Ed to the Caramoor community. Most importantly, we look forward to welcoming you back to our grounds more fully this summer. It is our hope that, by then, the world will be ready for us to gather safely to share the many joys of live music together. Warmly,

Nina Curley Interim CEO

Caramoor Conversations is a free video series that dives deeper into the pieces of music being performed in an upcoming concert. These in-depth discussions with the artists are a way for the audience to have a better understanding, and hopefully, a greater connection to the composers and their work. After their initial broadcast, the Conversations will be available throughout the current season. You can tune in at any time!

Caramoor Goes Virtual!

How Caramoor has adapted to the digital landscape and stayed close to artists and audiences throughout the pandemic. By Kathy Schuman, Artistic Director Wh o ca n f o r g et t h e w e e k o f M a r c h 9, 2 0 2 0 ? It began with us welcoming five Schwab Vocal Rising Stars for our annual mentoring program with Steven Blier, with every intention of having a public concert in the Music Room on Sunday, March 15. Well, as the week progressed, it became clear that this was not to be. By March 14, everything had shut down. But wait….didn’t we just install video cameras in the Music Room the previous year? Should we do a livestreamed concert?? Do we even know how to do that??? Well, here we are, a year and 20 livestreams later, and I’m proud to say — we know how to do that! As we launch our Spring 2021 season of livestreamed concerts, I’d love to share a few thoughts with you on the past year and what it’s been like to bring music to you in this new virtual format. In-person vs Livestream As we transitioned to livestreaming, I felt it was really important to transfer some part of the special Caramoor setting to our virtual concerts. So, we decided early on not to do any remote recordings, but only ones actually filmed at Caramoor. (We did have one exception to this, which was our quartet-in-residence, who were unable to travel from Houston, TX). I introduced each concert from a different room of the Rosen House, or from a spot on the grounds, so our audiences could learn a bit more about our unique site. Added content One of the benefits of the video concerts is our ability to add additional content and features to the programs. 05 / Caramoor

Emily Buffum, our livestream technician, hard at work

Many of our livestreamed concerts are followed by a Q&A on stage with the artists. The audience can send questions in through the chat box during the stream. These talks really help connect audiences to the musicians, and allow them to hear about not just the music, but how they’ve been coping throughout this past year. For many of these artists, our performances were the first time they played with other people, or outside of their homes, for many months. We’ve also added short pre-recorded interviews with alumni of our Rising Stars programs, and segments with or about composers whose works are featured on the programs. We even included a fun video of the Jacobsen brothers playing our theremin!

A post-concert chat with Gloria Chien, Anthony McGill and Kathy Schuman, Caramoor’s Artistic Director

Becoming a media company We discovered that putting on livestreamed concerts is MUCH more work than “normal” live concerts! The programs are shot with three cameras and live-edited from the basement. (Yes, practically all of our streams have really been LIVE.) So, we now have a whole livestream ‘team’ including a director, a livestream technician, an audio engineer, video graphic designer, live- chat monitor, etc. It all comes together on the day of the performance, with the extra nailbiting that comes along with that dreaded phrase “technical difficulties”! Thankfully these have been few and far between, but we will not soon forget when we couldn’t get any audio on Inon Barnatan’s July livestream and had to tell folks to tune in the next day. But that was back in July… Working during a pandemic On top of everything else, there are all the Covid safety protocols. Artists sometimes had to quarantine, there were Covid tests, there were masks, there were gloves, there were Lysol wipes, there were chairs spaced six feet apart (and colleagues with a ruler to check!). And our artist/staff meals were “enjoyed” with each of us sitting alone

at our own table. One of the oddest things for me was the 15 minutes or so leading up to each stream. Usually there’s audience filing in and chatting and the whole Music Room is aflutter with anticipation and conviviality. Now, the moments leading up to the stream are really, really quiet. The few staff members are at their ‘stations’ — the hall is virtually empty, except for a couple of us. The stage manager gives the countdown….5, 4, 3, 2, 1. After each piece, we give the artists a quiet thumbs up; there’s usually no clapping or bows.

George Lewis and Jeremy Denk in a mid-concert video chat about the composer “Blind Tom” Wiggins

As I write this, it looks like N.Y. State may be allowing small indoor audiences this spring. Whoopee! Music to my ears. Now we’ll have to figure out how to do in-person concerts simultaneously with livestreams. “Watch out, sir, don’t trip on that wire…!” / 06

About the Music.

DANIEL BERNARD ROUMAIN (DBR) (b. 1971)

“I made up my mind not to move” from String Quartet No. 5 (“Parks”) (2005) Daniel Bernard Roumain’s works for string quartet have, to date, each been inspired by iconic figures of the civil rights movement. From Malcolm X to Adam Clayton Powell, DBR has used the medium of the string quartet to examine these historic leaders, representing each through his unique compositional blend of driving rhythm, percussiveness, and emotionally charged lyricism. The three movements of DBR’s fifth string quartet, titled “Parks,” each use a highly specific compositional style to reflect on the life of Rosa Parks. The middle movement, “Klap Ur Hands,” invites the members of the string quartet to stomp and clap, a loose, groovy accompaniment to looping strains of bluesy string riffs. The third movement, “Isorhymiclationistic,” makes use of long, drawn-out chords, striking silence, and sudden shifts in dynamics, to hauntingly beautiful and dramatic effect. The first movement, “I made up my mind not to move,” featured on this program, is inspired by a direct quote from Parks herself. In reference to her defiant stance against bus segregation in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks stated: “I knew someone had to take

the first step and I made up my mind not to move.” This quote serves as programmatic inspiration for the movement, and also seems to inspire the driving yet static feel of the writing. While the piece appears to take inspiration from the minimalism of Philip Glass or Terry Riley, DBR’s piece is not meant to lull the listener into a trance. The movement is relentless, building and receding in everintensifying waves. DBR’s music holds its place, defiant and unapologetic, a fitting tribute to the “first lady” of the civil rights movement.

– Christopher Whitley

JESSIE MONTGOMERY (b. 1981) Source Code (2013) The first sketches of Source Code began as transcriptions of various sources from African American artists prominent during the peak of the Civil Rights era in the United States. I experimented by re-interpreting gestures, sentences, and musical syntax (the bare bones of rhythm and inflection) by choreographer Alvin Ailey, poets Langston Hughes and Rita Dove, and the great jazz songstress Ella Fitzgerald into musical sentences and tone paintings. Ultimately, this exercise of listening, re-imagining, and transcribing led me back to the Black spiritual as a common musical source across all three genres. The spiritual is a significant part of the DNA of Black folk music, and subsequently Spring 2021 II

most (arguably all) American pop music forms that have developed to the present day. This one-movement work is a kind of dirge, which centers on a melody based on syntax derived from black spirituals. The melody is continuous and cycles through like a gene strand with which all other textures play.

– Jessie Montgomery

TANYA TAGAQ (b. 1975) Sivunittinni (2017) Sivunittinni is the product of a collaboration between genredefying Inuk vocalist Tanya Tagaq and intrepid new music pioneers the Kronos Quartet. The piece was composed in 2015, and is one of a series of rich collaborations between Tagaq and Kronos. Transcribed from a series of vocal recordings, Sivunittinni challenges each member of the ensemble to recreate the richly textured and powerfully expressive timbres of Inuit throat singing. In her artist statement, Tagaq writes: “Sivunittinni, or the future ones, comes from a part of a poem I wrote for my album, and is the perfect title for this piece. My hope is to bring a little bit of the land to future musicians through this piece. There’s a disconnect in the human condition, a disconnect from nature, and it has caused a great deal of social anxiety and fear, as well as a lack of true meaning of health, and a lack of a relationship with what life is, Caramoor

so maybe this piece can be a little bit of a wake-up.” The piece makes use of a variety of non-conventional bow techniques to represent highly specific vocalizations like breathing, growling, and gasping. The instrumentalists trace circles with their bows to evoke “bubbling,” “percolating,” and feelings of anxiety. The sonic textures not only suggest the sound of the human voice. Tagaq’s preoccupation can be heard in the slow tectonic cello writing, and the bleak emptiness often heard in the softest passages of the piece. The work ebbs and flows, building to visceral heights, then dissolving into almost primordial stillness. In one climactic moment, the quartet is asked to create the sound of “sawing through bone.” With Sivunittinni, Tagaq creates a powerful and impactful work, with dramatic and gripping instrumental techniques seldom heard from a classical string quartet. Sivunittinni, arranged by Jacob Garchik, was composed as part of the Kronos Quartet’s 50 for the Future project. In the hopes of creating a new repertoire for the future of the string quartet, Kronos has commissioned 25 male and 25 female composers around the world and has made the scores, parts, and other learning content for each available for free online.

PAOLA PRESTINI (b. 1975)

This then divides into the following

The Red Book (2020) World Premiere, Vol. 21 of Caramoor’s commissioning project: A String Quartet Library for the 21st Century

1. The Tree of Life 2. The Watering of Roses/Soul 3. Serpentine Hands/Roots 4. Underwater 5. Sun God 6. The Piercing of the Soul 7. Moon Tree/Night Sky

The Red Book is a string quartet written in seven movements for the Thalea String Quartet, inspired by Liber Novus by the psychologist Carl Jung. The theme was chosen well before this moment in time, but it has gathered more meaning for me as, for the first time in my life, I've felt bound by a collective consciousness. Jung integrates the following threads: an attempt to understand the "human" personality in general, the relation of the living and the dead, an attempt to understand the psychological and historical effects of Christianity, and the future religious development of the West. I've grappled with different subthemes that have helped me choose seven directions for this extramusical work, with the visual elements of The Red Book being the guiding sources of structure. The work is tied together by the thread of overcoming our contemporary malaise of spiritual alienation through this moment of collective consciousness. This is represented by a prominent theme that weaves through the movements.

This is the first extramusical work I've embarked on in a long time and I took the idea of seven movements because my favorite string quartet is Beethoven's Opus 131. Very little aside from the seven-part structure is retained aside from the cyclical nature of the quartet, which in this case relates to the cyclical nature of life, and to the visual mandala, which served as a binding image for Jung. A legend of images and icons accompanied his mandala, which, among many others, include the soul, the serpent, the sun/eye, fullness and emptiness, with at its center humanity, which ends and begins the cycle. These icons are represented in my work by different themes and music motifs that are interpolated and developed throughout the cycle.

About the Artists.

Thalea String Quartet The Thalea String Quartet brings together artists of Nigerian, Venezuelan, Japanese, and Canadian heritage. With repertoire as diverse as its members, and every bit as exuberant, Thalea connects with audiences on a musical, emotional and personal level, from first-time listeners to chamber music aficionados. Top prize-winners at both the 2018 Fischoff and Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competitions, Thalea was founded in 2014 and made its U.S. début at the Kennedy Center in 2016. They have since performed across North America and in Italy, France, Belgium, and China, and were chosen by Canada’s Début Atlantic to give a two-week tour of eastern Canada in 2020-21. Thalea was honored to be the Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence at Caramoor in 2019-20, joining an elite roster of quartets who have held this esteemed position. Caramoor commissioned Paola Prestini to write a work for them during their residency, but the premiere was postponed due to COVID-19 until today. Thalea co-commissioned, with pianist Michelle Cann, a chamber Caramoor

version of the Piano Concerto by Florence Price, contributing to the resurgence of interest in this neglected African-American composer. They performed the work with great success at Caramoor and on a tour of the West Coast. Beginning August 2020, Thalea has been in residence at University of Maryland as the Graduate Fellowship Quartet. For the previous two years, they were the Young Professional Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Texas-Austin’s Butler School of Music, and prior to that they were the inaugural Quartet-in-Residence at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Thalea has shared the stage with the Borromeo Quartet in the Mendelssohn Octet, with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer/vocalist Caroline Shaw, with Geoff Nuttall of the St. Lawrence String Quartet, and with pianist Tao Lin. Thalea participated in the 2017 Kronos Festival and have been Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel Associated Artists under the mentorship of the Artemis Quartet. Other mentors include the Miró Quartet and members of the Juilliard, Kronos, Takács, Pacifica and Danish String Quartets. During multiple residencies at the Banff Centre they worked with Gilbert Kalish, Mark Steinberg, Alasdair Tait and the JACK and Miró Quartets. Individual members also perform jazz, compose for interactive visual art, sing in choirs, dance ballet, and occasionally act on a hit TV show.

Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence. Since 1999, one extremely promising string quartet is chosen for this year-long residency, during which they perform at Caramoor throughout the season and lend their time and talents to Caramoor’s Student Strings, a classroom-based program of concerts and conversations in secondary schools. These burgeoning quartets often return in the years following their residencies to perform at Caramoor among its roster of distinguished musicians. During each residency, Caramoor offers the quartet the opportunity to commission a new work from a composer of their choice, resulting in fruitful artistic relationships with the composers. Through this aspect of the program, Caramoor is proud to have helped bring into existence an exciting new library of 21st-century string quartet repertoire. The Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence is supported, in part, by major endowment gifts from the Ernst C. Stiefel Foundation. The success of this mentoring program relies on the generosity of donors interested in furthering the careers of promising chamber quartets. Emi Ferguson and Ruckus Flutist Emi Ferguson (“wonderful,” The New York Times; “irresistibly vital,” Portland Press Herald) is joined by the continuo band Ruckus in a wild technicolor romp through some of Bach’s most playful and transcendent works reimagined and realized for 21st-century fans of 18th-century performance practice. Having earned widespread critical acclaim for its fresh, visceral approach to early music, Ruckus’ core members form the baroque equivalent of a rhythm section: guitars, keyboards, cello, bassoon, and bass. The ensemble aims to fuse the early-music movement’s questing, creative spirit with the grit, groove and jangle of American roots music, creating a unique sound of “rough-edged intensity” (The New Yorker). Highlights of Our Fall Special Events.

For our annual Cabaret benefit, Laura Osnes and Tony Yazbeck celebrated Gershwin and the American Songbook in a Livestream from the Music Room.

C

aramoor’s special events play a vital role in raising funds for our core programming and are a great opportunity to thank our donors who help foster musical inspiration. We appreciate the support of our event donors, especially in this strange past season as they withstood reschedules and modifications aplenty. Our Opening Night Gala was cancelled though received generous support from ticket and table reservations converted to donations. Our Cabaret in the Music Room instead became live on screen from your own living room and even included some fancy-footed dance numbers. And we were able to host a small, outdoor, socially distant, and compliant fundraising dinner – the Fall Fête – in the careful hands of our friends at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. Caramoor is grateful to the event committees and patrons that helped guide us in making sure these occasions were memorable and successful.

Leave a Legacy.

C

aramoor Center for Music and the Arts was established by Walter and Lucie Rosen to operate their estate in perpetuity as a home for art, music, and inspiration. The Rosens were touched by the pleasure their friends took while visiting Caramoor, and they decided to leave their home as a legacy for all to enjoy. It is thanks to the vision, energy, and estate planning of this inspirational couple that we enjoy Caramoor today. The Rosens had the forethought to make plans for Caramoor’s future, and we hope you will think of Caramoor when considering your future. We would be so honored if you would consider adding us to your estate plans

and joining with the Rosens in growing your legacy. You can help ensure a bright future for Caramoor. Generosity comes in many forms, and it is often the best way for you to support causes that matter the most to you. When you give to Caramoor, you help us to make a difference. One long-term way is to Leave a Gift in Your Will. If this is appealing, please contact us for suggested language to review with your attorney and/or financial planners. When you have made these arrangements, please let us know you have done so. We will be happy to welcome you to our Encore Society with other like-minded Caramoor donors.

If you would like more information about planned giving at Caramoor, or to notify us of your intention to include Caramoor in your estate planning, please contact Nina Curley, VP/ Chief Development Officer, at nina@ caramoor.org or call 914.232.3681. 19 / Caramoor
