Welcome to the Holiday Tea Musicale. Thank you for joining us for our 2020 Holiday Tea Musicale, one of the best loved events at Caramoor. While our version of this festive annual event looks a bit different this year, we wanted to continue the tradition of celebrating the holidays as Lucie and Walter Rosen might have enjoyed them: with music, art, and an elegant tea service in their Katonah home. This year we are pleased to bring The Rosen House tour to you in in the comfort of your home with a series of videos we have created specifically for our Holiday Tea Musicale audiences. You may view them at any time convenient for you during this holiday season, but we invite you to also join us as we view the concert and tour videos together on December 18, 19, and 20 beginning at 1:00pm. During these times, Roanne Wilcox, the Director of the Rosen House, will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the Rosens themselves and the art and furnishings in their home. It will also be a lovely way for you to share with us your memories of past Holiday Tea Musicales and other Caramoor experiences. And in 2021, when it is safe to do so, we hope to welcome you back to Caramoor to visit The Rosen House for a full in-person tour. Happy Holidays!

About the Artists.

Christine Taylor Price, soprano

Gregory Feldmann, baritone

Soprano Christine Taylor Price from Tulsa, Oklahoma earned her Master’s degree and Artist Diploma of Opera Studies at The Juilliard School. She has performed at Opera Columbus as The Governess in Benjamin Britten’s Turn of the Screw and with Opera in Williamsburg as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro.

Driven by a desire to explore and express the human experience through song, New York-based baritone Gregory Feldmann is a rising young artist on opera and recital stages alike.

While at Juilliard, Price performed many roles including Pamina in The Magic Flute, Frau Fluth in Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, Serpetta in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera and Lucia is The Rape of Lucretia. Her concert work includes Symphony No. 4 of Gustav Mahler under Maestro Edward Gardner, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the New York Philharmonic, Handel’s Messiah with Portland Baroque Orchestra, Paul Agnew conducting, J.S. Bach’s Magnificat, Richard Strauss’s Deutsche Motette, as well as making her Carnegie Hall debut singing Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. She was a semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and is the proud recipient of a Novick Career Advancement Grant. She was invited to sing in multiple live-streamed masterclasses with Joyce DiDonato, Gerald Finley, Fabio Luisi, Pablo HerasCasado and Emmanuel Villaume. Price was a Schwab Vocal Rising Star in 2017 and is very excited to be back at Caramoor!

He enjoys a partnership with pianist Nathaniel LaNasa. After together winning First Prize in the Joy in Singing International Song Competition, the duo made their Weill Hall debut in February 2020. The program, Degenerate Music, focused on censored composers in the Third Reich.Their next collaborative project, Monuments, centers on the evolving relationship between society and commemorative art and music. On the operatic stage, in February 2020 Feldmann sang the role of the composer in Virgil Thomson’s The Mother of Us All, in a collaboration between Juilliard Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was a Gaddes Festival Artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2020, and was slated to sing Morales in Bizet’s Carmen, as well as cover Oliver Sacks in the world premiere of Tobias Picker’s Awakenings. Feldmann is an Artist Diploma in Opera Studies degree candidate at The Juilliard School, studying under Elizabeth Bishop. A 2018 Schwab Vocal Rising Star, he hails from York, Pennsylvania.

Nathaniel LaNasa, piano Fascinated with the intersection of storytelling, speech, and movement, pianist Nathaniel LaNasa partners with singers, dancers, and ensembles in music spanning five centuries. A consummate collaborator, LaNasa has been praised for his “stormy lyricism” (New York Times) as well as his “poise and elegance” (Feast of Music). Winner of the 2019 Joy In Singing International Art Song Competition with baritone Gregory Feldmann, the duo made their Carnegie debut in February 2020. LaNasa also performs regularly with vocalist Lucy Dhegrae, most recently at Resonant Bodies Festival and Albany’s American Music Festival. His NYC credits include Alice Tully Hall, MoMA, and (le) Poisson Rouge. “The magic,” he says, “lies in expanding the space of our shared inspiration. For me, it’s all about dancing with the tension and flow of musical dialogue.” A graduate of the Juilliard School and a 2018 fellow at Tanglewood, LaNasa joined the coaching staff at Berlin Opera Academy in 2019.

Ginger Cookies Ingredients 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard 1/2 teaspoon fine salt 5 cracks freshly ground black pepper 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature 1/2 cup sugar, plus more for rolling the cookies 1/4 cup dark brown sugar 1 large egg yolk 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 cup molasses 2 tablespoons ginger preserves (see Cook’s Note) Directions 1. Whisk the flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, allspice, mustard, salt and black pepper together in a medium bowl. 2. Beat the butter and the sugars with an electric mixer on medium-high until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the egg yolk and vanilla and beat on medium speed until just incorporated, about 20 seconds. Add the molasses and ginger preserves and continue beating until the batter is an even light brown color, 30 seconds more. 3. Add the dry ingredients all at once, beating slowly to make a soft, smooth dough. Cover the bowl with plastic and refrigerate the dough until firm, about 25 minutes. 4. Put about 1/2 cup sugar in a small bowl. With a spoon or a small ice cream scoop, portion the dough into a slightly heaping tablespoon for each cookie. Roll the dough, by hand, into balls. Roll the tops of the balls in the sugar, and space them 2 inches apart on a nonstick or lightly oiled cookie sheet. Refrigerate until firm, about 25 minutes. (The chilling is what gives this cookie a beautiful, crackly crunch on top, and a soft, chewy center.) 5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Bake until the top is crackly, and the insides peeking out are dark and moist but not raw, about 15 to 20 minutes. Briefly cool the cookies on the baking sheets, then transfer to racks to cool completely. 6. Serve or store in a tightly sealed container for up to 3 weeks. Cook’s Note: Ginger preserves give lots of flavor without the hard chunks of crystallized ginger. It is found in most grocery stores. Caramoor
