his heading could also apply rather aptly to recovering from all the over indulgence many partake in over the holiday season, myself included, but it is more about what 2011 could mean to us in cars, motorised watercraft and bikes.

many are calling the end of the recession, motorised watercraft and bikes have been a little slow out the gates. But I would like to predict that 2011 will continue to show tough and hard earned progress for the hard working people in this not so main stream industry.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante

W

ith the new Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante, Lamborghini is setting a new benchmark in the most fascinating automobile segment of all, the open top super sports car. As “Performante”, the Gallardo Spyder is even lighter thanks to CFRP technology, even more agile and even more dynamic.

The Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante is an uncompromising driving machine. Its chassis, with its mighty brakes, is a work of great precision, while the new 19-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero Corsa sports tyres are extremely lightweight.

The Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder is already at the peak of its game, bearing testament to the lightweight engineering approach pursued by the Lamborghini brand. Nevertheless, the engineers in Sant’Agata Bolognese managed to reduce the weight of the new Spyder Performante by a further 65 kilograms. The open super sports car tips the scales with a dry weight of no more than 1 485 kilograms a new best for that highly exclusive market segment. Just like its “brother”, the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, the light weight of the Spyder Performante is due in large part to exterior and interior components made from carbon fibre. These carbon composite materials are perfectly suited to super sports cars because they combine reduced weight with improved technical characteristics. The V10 power unit with a displacement of 5.2 liters generates 419 kW in the Spyder Performante and guarantees breathtaking performance – it is said to catapult the open top LP 570-4 from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.9 seconds and keeps on going to a top speed of 324 km/h. The engine with “Iniezione Diretta Stratificata” gasoline direct injection boasts extremely impressive pulling power and a virtually endless rev range that delivers a constant supply of spine tingling acoustics.

sweeping bonnet, set back passenger compartment, long wheelbase and flat waistline embody the hallmark proportions of a BMW convertible. The new BMW 6 series Convertible combines these features with a classic soft top roof in customary fin design. The luxurious ambience of the interior is highlighted by the driver orientated cockpit set up and wraps the front passenger and rear passengers in a feeling of exclusive security. The new BMW 6 series Convertible will be available with two engine variants from launch. The

eight cylinder powerplant in the BMW 650i Convertible produces 300 kW from 5 500 rpm and 600 Nm from 1 750 rpm. BMW say that it can sprint to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds on its way to an electronically limited 250 km/h. An exclusive variant of the six cylinder in line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo, direct injection and Valvetronic does duty in BMW 640i Convertible generating 235 kW at 5 800 rpm and 450 Nm from 1 300 rpm. It is said to be capable of sprinting to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Both engines team up with a eight speed Sports automatic gearbox that offers a combination of sportiness, shift comfort and efficiency unmatched in its segment. The driver can also change gear manually using shift paddles on the steering wheel. The new Convertible also underlines its progressive character with numerous BMW ConnectedDrive features that none of its rivals can match. These include a rear-view camera, Surround view, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition and BMW Parking Assistant. A range of BMW EfficientDynamics measures also contribute to reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Drive Dynamic Control allows the driver to make his own choice of suspension settings in Normal, Sport and Sport + modes using a button on the centre console. The new BMW 6 series goes on sale in South Africa in March 2011.

Fiat Freemont - International Debut

T

he Freemont is built on the base of the Dodge Journey and will be the first Fiat vehicle to come out of the partnership with the Chrysler Group.

The Fiat Freemont is in fact a ‘factotum vehicle’ designed to meet the diverse needs of families and those seeking a spacious, comfortable and versatile vehicle to cater for the frantic pace of everyday life or weekend leisure time.

To simplify the selection and purchase process, only two spec levels (aimed at different customer types) will be provided. The equipment level for both outfits is extremely comprehensive and all the main content items comply with the ‘Fiat fair price’ strategy.

The Freemont will have front wheel drive with turbo diesel power units 104 kW or 126 kW 2.0 MultiJet combined with a manual gearbox. Later, the vehicle will also be available in 4x4 versions with 126 kW 2.0 MultiJet and 205 kW 3.6 petrol V6 engines, both with automatic transmissions.

The vehicle combines flexibility and practicality with its own distinctive and original style. The dimensions (length of 489 cm, width of 188 cm and height of 172 cm) guarantee outstanding interior roominess, aided by the best wheelbase in its category (289 cm). The Fiat Freemont guarantees maximum roominess, comfort and versatility due to its seven standard seats with a genuine third row of roomy seats that is easily accessible because the doors open to 90 degrees. On-board comfort is also assured by a high driving position, new roomy and ergonomic seats, a host of storage compartments, a generous luggage area with two compartments and a flat load platform for an overall capacity of up to 1461 litres. The vehicle’s individual design includes muscular, decisive lines that are expressed in a front end with brand new bumpers and grille. The rear end has been redesigned with the adoption of a new bumper and LED tail lights.

The New Aston Martin V8 Vantage S

T

he Aston Martin Vantage range comes of age with the new V8 Vantage S characterised by a host of new driverfocused features all designed to push the honed dynamics of the standard Vantage to a new benchmark level. Aston Martin’s own 4.7 litre V8 engine has been engineered to deliver peak power of 321 kW at 7 300 rpm and torque of 490 Nm at 5 000 rpm and is coupled with a new groundup developed Sportshift II transmission specifically designed for the Vantage S with seven short ratio gears to deliver the most engaging and intense driver involvement. Dynamic revisions are central to the Vantage S, with a quickened steering rack ratio of 15:1 compared to 17:1 on the standard car and a larger diameter front brake disc with new sixpiston front brake calipers. New springs and dampers, and wider rear wheels also contribute to chassis revisions.

is the new seven speed Sportshift II automated manual transmission, offered as standard and delivers exceedingly rapid gear changes, twenty per cent quicker than Sportshift. The extra gear permits shorter well-spaced ratios taking advantage of the optimum torque, which combined with a shorter final drive ratio of 4.182:1 delivers quicker acceleration and an enhanced sporting feel. The inherent benefits of a single clutch system reduces complexity and significant weight over a dual clutch solution. The Vantage S is instantly recognisable as a true Aston Martin, characterised by its purposeful stance conveying its agility and performance capability. From the front, a new lower

front bumper finished in perfectly-aligned carbon fibre houses a larger air intake feeding the engine and front brakes. Bridging the gap between road car and race car, the Vantage S is heavily influenced by the 2011 Vantage GT4 race car. The GT4 takes advantage of the Vantage’s immensely rigid bonded aluminium chassis, providing the ideal platform for a race car. Minor racing safety modifications including an FIA approved roll cage and racing ‘bag’ petrol tank along with weight saving measures are made to the standard road car to convert it into a class winning race car. The Vantage S is available to order now from Aston Martin’s South African dealership.

A new dynamic stability control (DSC) system specifically tuned to the Vantage S along with a new brake module providing features such as Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) which provides assistance in emergency braking situations, and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Bespoke tyres have been developed with Bridgestone to optimise road holding enhancing dynamic feel. At the core of the Vantage S

The spacious, inviting interior of the Insight proves that compact cars don’t have to be cramped inside. The central innovation featuring in the latest Viano is a completely new drive offering particularly environmentally friendly operation. All engines comply with the Euro 5 emissions standard. All new Mazda 5

T

his summer the all new Mazda 5 will hit showrooms across South Africa as the successor to Mazda’s first generation compact multi-activity vehicle.

The first generation set a solid foundation, featuring a distinctive character, outstanding functionality and superior handling with its unique 6+1 packaging concept and sliding doors on both sides which the new Mazda5 has further built upon. Featuring the all new Nagare design concept, the development team set out to create a vehicle that is both contemporary and smart in its functionality. The development goals included a stylish design, dual sliding doors on both sides, a flexible interior space with multiple seat arrangements, a smooth and sporty ride and outstanding fuel economy. The result is a new type of family focused people mover that can meet the varied needs of families. Inside the Mazda5 inherits the same packaging concept, offering three rows of comfortable seating. The wider front row seats improve comfort while floor height rises up a step in the second and third row to ensure a clearer view for occupants in the back. Occupants of the two rows can take advantage of the ample legroom to stretch their legs and enjoy a more comfortable driving experience. Volvo V60

olvo say that the new V60 is a car for those who know when to play it safe and when to just get out and play. It takes driving a conventional long boot model to a whole new level and there is an engine to suit everyones needs and pocket. It is best not to call this car a station wagon, because frankly it doesnt really look like a traditional station wagon and dynamically it is just as good as the sedan bodied S60. Short overhangs, a pronounced wedge shape and the slim coupe-like roofline create the look of a big hatchback rather than a long booted station wagon. The dynamic chassis is backed up by a range of electronic systems that sharpen the sporty driving experience even further. These include advanced stability control and torque vectoring traction control. The interior is a clear example of how Volvo Car’s designers have added excitement, contrast and a playful element to the Scandinavian design traditions simplicity and functionality. The interior is lavish in terms of driver orientated details, but it is still a five seater car offering comfortable space for all its occupants. The 40/20/40 split rear seat and the fold flat front passenger make it possible to combine passengers and cargo in a remarkably flexible way. The 430 litre load area has been designed for maximum utilisation of each available millimeter.

The V60 will be available with seven different engine configurations. In the petrol department the range starts off with the 1.6 litre T3 boasting 110 kW and 240 Nm and the range is rounded off by the awesome T6, that produces 224 kW and 440 Nm from its in-line six cylinder engine. Other engine options include the 2.0T, T5 and T4. For the diesel fans there are two choices, both of which are five cylinder engines, a D5 that produces 151 kW and 420 Nm and the D3 that pushes out 120 kW and 400 Nm.

xciting cutting-edge technology from Mercedes AMG: the Mercedes-Benz CL 63 AMG benefits from a completely newly developed powertrain. This hightech package leads to a high output and torque yield, together with fuel consumption figures that are unrivalled in the competitive line-up. The AMG 5.5 litre V8 biturbo engine develops a peak output of 400 kW and maximum torque of 800 Nm. In conjunction with the AMG Performance package these figures are increased to 420 kW and 900 Nm. The CL 63 AMG delivers superior performance at sports car level: this V8 model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The 100 km/h mark is reached in just 4.4 seconds with the AMG Performance package, with the top speed increased to an electronically limited 300 km/h. Launched Ford Focus

The Future of Ford The venue: Los Angeles, California, U.S.A, The event: The launch of the all-new Ford Focus. A country known for its big fuel guzzlers and allergy to anything small, and a compact car that didn’t even make it over there in its previous generation.

T

he irony is that a headline like this a few simple years ago would have been checked to see if it was not an April fool’s day joke.

But I can tell you that the recent world recession and I guess simple logic has eventually filtered down to the Americans, and they are now amongst the first to get a bite of and own these new world car offerings from Ford. So thanks to this and the fact that the new Ford Focus that has been developed in Europe and will soon to be sold in more than 120 markets worldwide, including South Africa of course, we got to enjoy the canyons in and around Malibu with the car that will be here in the third quarter of this year. From first looks it would seem that Ford have the styling spot on, the car doesn’t look a whole lot like anything else we have going on in the hatch and sedan segment at the moment. I like it, but I do have to say that for the first time I prefer the look of the sedan over the hatch. Under the skin you have a whole lot going on in terms of smart technologies like MyFord Touch, active park assist, SYNC with traffic, directions and information, HD Radio with iTunes tagging, ambient lighting, torque vectoring control, rear view camera, intelligent Access with push-button start and Wi-Fi access. Most of which we will not be getting in South Africa! If I remember correctly we will get torque vectoring control, a push button start and ambient lighting only, with the seriously good, class

separating, stuff is not for us. And this means that the Focus will fall right in the middle of the highly competitive C segment shark tank inhabited by the like likes of VW, Opel and Toyota without what I thought were pretty sharp gadget laden teeth. As for the rest of the interior, think funky new Fiesta and you will have it about right. Basic feel and operation feels top class and there is also a good deal of space for what would be the whole family at times. Ford are

claiming that they put a whole lot of effort into their drivetrain and chassis in the new car and along with the already mentioned torque vectoring control system, that acts like a limitedslip diff by applying an imperceptible amount of braking to the inside front wheel so that more of the engine torque goes to the outside wheel for greater traction out of bends, handling was a good as could be at speeds that were never much over 55 mph (90 km/h). The true test will be when we get to test the car properly at higher speeds locally.

Talking of speeds, the five speed manual and six speed auto models we drove were the 2.0 litre direct injection naturally aspirated offerings that were said to make 160 Hp (120 kW) in American trim, we might get a slightly different spec, and to be blunt, even at sea level, these cars were no ball of fire. All this car’s serious competition have punchy force fed engines in some shape or form across their range doing their biding now, but the good news is that sometime in 2012 there will be a 2.0 litre eco boost turbocharged derivative and this will be the pick of the petrol engines I am sure. Ford locally will also be offering a turbodiesel and perhaps even a 1.6 litre petrol derivative at launch later this year and the fire breathing ST should get here late 2012 or early 2013. I hate guessing but the manufacturers never give us this info, other than to say that pricing will be competitive. Which means if you base this on current figures means plus a bit for inflation and the like, you might get the 1.6 for just under R200K, the 2.0 DGI for around R250K and the diesel for under R300K, spec dependent of course. The new Ford Focus is a good car, and local sales numbers will determine whether is goes onto to be a great car; I just feel that there might be a gadget or two and possibly an engine offering or two missing at launch that might hurt its acceptance initially.

Launched Hyundai

Changing Perceptions

Over the last few years Hyundai has been through an evolution of quality, with a shift to customer orientated quality management. In the year 2000 Hyundai was the 10 th biggest car maker globally, by 2009 they moved up to the 5th position.

I

n todays global marketplace they have become a force to be reckoned with. They invited us to Korea to see just how they achieved their success and also for us to drive four brand spanking new models. Hyundai have also adopted a policy of investing five percent annually into Research and Development, no matter how good or bad the company does. They believe that your R & D must never be left to stagnate because then you will quickly get left behind by the competition. During our visit to Korea we also got to see the Hyundai R & D facility and it is truly a state of the art complex

with a wind tunnel, crash testing facility, various test tracks and research labs for all areas of the vehicle that is easily comparable to that of major European manufacturers.

become one of Hyundai’s top selling global models. The seventh generation Accent is set to continue this trend with a refined modern design and an emphasis on high quality.

Hyundai also owns their own steel plant, which produces pressed steel that they use to build their cars while also selling a large amount off to other companies.

The new Accent continues Hyundai Motor’s Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy that injects sophistication and dynamic angles as well as elegant lines resembling a calligraphers strokes into the shape of the vehicle.

During our visit we also got to drive four brand new models, two of which will be hitting South Africa within the next year. The all new Accent, began life as the automakers first product, the Pony in 1976 and has

The vehicle is built on a 70 mm longer platform that helps to offer more space and comfort for front and rear seat passengers and it also delivers great luggage capacity that is wide enough to fit four golf bags and three overnight bags. The longer wheelbase also contributes to a smooth ride with enhanced stability and McPherson struts on the front wheels provide fully independent suspension with sensitive steering and controlled maneuverability. Features inside the Accent include a USB port for iPod, MP3 player or other portable multimedia device as well as an integrated Bluetooth system. All new Accent will be powered by the new generation Gamma engine, these 1.6 litre or 1.4 litre DOHC four cylinder engines feature multiport fuel injection with CVVT. The 1.6 litre engine produces 92 kW and 156 Nm while the 1.4 litre is capable of 81 kW and 136 Nm. These engines will be mated to a four speed automatic transmission or a standard five speed

manual gearbox. The Elantra is the second model that will be coming to South Africa. It has reached cumulative sales of six million units worldwide and received high marks from a number of world renowned car rating agencies since the first generation, which was launched in 1990. Now in its fifth generation there have been upgrades in all departments and it now projects an even more progressive image. The Elantra will continue its successful tradition of offering class leading performance and fuel efficiency thanks to cutting edge technology and powertrain. The styling department once again applied their Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy but used a design concept called Wind Craft, mimicking a piece of sculpture crafted by the wind. By lowering the roofline, creating muscular wheelarches and adding sharply creased character lines that flow from the A-pillar along the hood and into the front bumper, the

sedan has a powerful and assertive stance. The lower roofline and low rear deck also produces a slicker and sportier profile with a drag coefficient of just 0.28, reducing wind resistance and improving fuel economy. The new Elantra comes with a choice of two all new engines a 1.8 litre MPI and a gamma 1.6 litre MPI D-CVVT. Both are mated to six speed auto / manual transmissions. The 1.8 litre is capable of 112 kW at 6 500 rpm and 179 Nm at 4 700 rpm. These figures are achieved thanks to Dual CVVT camshafts. A plastic two stage Variable Induction system enables switching between long and short intake manifolds, resulting in increased across the board performance. The 1.6 litre Gamma MPI four cylinder engine is equipped with D-CVVT to boost horsepower to 97 kW at 6 300 rpm and allow lower exhaust emissions while delivering best in class fuel economy. Peak torque measures 157 Nm at 4 850 rpm. This engine is mated to a six speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic

manual control or a standard six speed manual transmission. Developed and manufactured entirely in house, the all new six speed automatic transmission is the worlds first to be designed for engine applications in small mid sized passenger cars and it is smaller, more compact and lighter than any other six speed auto transmissions on the market today. Keeping things safe is the Vehicle Stability Management, ESP and a six airbag system. We also had the opportunity to drive the BleoOn and the Sonata Hybrid. The BlueOn is a full speed electric vehicle, which is based on Hyundai’s small hatchback, the i10. It is equipped with a highly efficient electric motor powered by an innovative 16.4 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. The BlueOn boasts maximum power of 61 kW and 210 Nm. But the amazing thing is the way that it delivers this power. Maximum power is available the instant you stomp on the throttle,

ISSUE 67

13

no waiting for the engine to rev up or turbos to spool up, it simply rockets off the line. The Lipoly battery delivers the same power as more conventional Nickel-metal hydride batteries but with 30 percent less weight and 40 percent less volume. The BlueOn accomodates dual recharging methods, a 220V household supply or a 380V industrial strength power, which promises quick recharging speeds. Under the household power, the battery will be fully recharged within six hours. Under the quick charge method the battery can be recharged to about 80 percent of its capacity within 25 minutes. The BlueOn boasts a maximum speed of 130 km/h and does the 0-100km/h sprint in 13.1 seconds, which is better than some petrol engines in the same class and can travel around 140 kilometres on a single charge. BlueOn also features a Virtual Engine Sound System, which creates an artificial sound for the safety of pedestrians, as electric vehicles make little to no

14

ISSUE 67

sound when driving at low speeds. Lastly we drove the Direct Hybrid Blue Drive system. This vehicle boasts a powertrain entirely developed in house by Hyundai that includes several technical firsts. These innovations allow the Sonata to provide performance and efficiency improvements not available in other hybrids. The system used in the Sonata is a full parallel hybrid system and the vehicle can be driven in zero emissions, fully electric mode at speeds of up to 100 km/h or in blended petrol-electric mode at any speed. When the car comes to a stop and the electrical load is too low, the engine is shut down to completely eliminate idle fuel consumption and emissions. What makes the Hyundai system unique is that it uses a Transmission Mounted Electric Drive layout where the motor is seperated from the transmission gear set. The mid sized transmission in the Sonata is used in conjunction with

a 30 kW motor to provide full hybrid capability including electric drive at speeds of up to 100 km/h. This permanent magnet synchronious electric motor produces 205 Nm from zero rpm. A multi disc clutch pack sits within the inner circumfrence of the traction motor and is used to de-couple the motor from the 2.4 litre inline four cylinder engine for idle stop and electric drive modes. The Sonata is also the first full hybrid to use a conventional step ratio automatic transmission while the electric motor gets power from a innovative Lithium Polymer battery pack. Although these two models are not yet planned for the South African market it is good to see that they too have the ability to build these cars and make a success of it. It is no longer a case of the Koreans are coming, they have well and truly arrived.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Alfa Romeo SA Reveals Giulietta

It’s here! The wait is finally over a fitting symbol of the brand’s 100-year motoring evolution, the all-new Giulietta is unveiled in South Africa.

T

he Giulietta story began in the 1950s when this extrovertly-styled sedan caught the imagination of the driving public with its racy appeal, attractive looks and accessible pricing. Now, over 50 years later, the Italian sporting car manufacturer is celebrating its centenary with an all-new namesake which goes on sale in South Africa. The latest incarnation of the Giulietta has been designed to take on the best in the midsize C segment – and that’s no easy task considering the excellence of the competition in a category that now accounts for the second largest number of passenger sales in South Africa. To take on this challenge, Alfa Romeo has penned an all-new car that sits on an all-new Compact platform. This employs a combination of advanced engineering and sophisticated technical solutions to ensure the Giulietta can accommodate the needs of all customers in this category. The result is a model that combines impeccable safety credentials, Italian style, comfort and functionality with the dynamic qualities taken for granted in Alfa Romeos. In addition, every customer can adapt the new car to their specific driving requirements thanks to Alfa Romeo’s D.N.A. (Dynamic, Nor-

16

ISSUE 67

mal or All-Weather) selector. But this is just one of the electronic systems that the Compact platform was designed to integrate and exploit. Others, fitted as standard to every model in the range, include the Electronic Q2 differential and the VDC system. At launch, the new Giulietta range comprises three turbocharged petrol engines including

the 1.4 TBi Progression boating 88 kW and 206 Nm, the MultiAir 1.4 TBi Distinctive capable of 125 kW and 250 Nm and the 1 750 TBi Quadrifoglio Verde producing an astonishing 173 kW and 340 Nm. Highlighting the eco-friendliness of the new Giuliettas, it’s noteworthy that both 1400 turbo variants combine Start&Stop technology and a gearshift indicator to enable drivers to achieve the best economy possible. The most

powerful petrol engine in the range is the 1750 TBi, a twin overhead camshaft, direct injection, variable valve timing engine that brings the classic 1750 capacity back to the Alfa Romeo range but with a modern twist. This innovative turbocharged unit provides more horsepower and torque per litre than any other four-cylinder petrol engine found in this class of car. The resulting performance is said to be equivalent to a three-litre while economy remains in line with a compact four-cylinder engine. But the Giulietta isn’t just about being fun to drive or having an interior trimmed with all the creature comforts one has come to expect from a premium brand (electric windows, remote central locking, high-end stereo system, steering wheel controls, and Blue&Me communication are just some of the standard interior niceties). Whichever the model, owners will get one of the safest cars on the road. The new Alfa Giulietta was recently awarded a Euro NCAP fivestar crash safety rating and an overall score of 87/100: an impressive result that makes it the safest compact car built to date.

Evidence of this, for instance, is provided by the adoption of the most advanced electronic dynamic control systems (for braking and traction): the Vehicle Dynamic Control system which manages key functions like Hill Holder, traction control and emergency braking; the MSR system which prevents wheel locking when the throttle is released; the DST (Dynamic Steering Torque) system; Electronic Q2 which electronically simulates the presence of a self-locking differential, and the brandnew Pre-Fill system, which alerts the braking system that the accelerator pedal has been released, to decrease intervention time and consequently braking distance.

MINI Countryman

ALL4 All Rounder

The MINI Countryman is the first MINI to come with four doors and a large tailgate. It is also the first member of the MINI family with a body measuring more than four metres in length, and which can be ordered as an option with all-wheel drive. Add the slightly raised seating position, and the MINI Countryman becomes a pretty functional crossover vehicle.

T

wo petrol engines are available in South Africa. The selection of petrol variants available in South Africa ranges from the MINI Cooper Countryman, which develops a naturally aspirated 90 kW, while the MINI Cooper S Countryman’s turbocharged 1.6 litre four-cylinder produces 135 kW. A diesel is likely to follow given this MINI’s new role and slightly different appeal. The ALL4 all-wheel drive is governed by an electromagnetic centre differential positioned directly on the final drive. This varies the distribution of power between the front and rear axles. The system is available only for the MINI Cooper S Countryman and makes quite a remarkable difference on slippery surfaces. The launch drive included quite a few kilometres of dirt roads and the Countryman Cooper S handled them particularly well. Grip levels were high and the car very stable. A newly developed suspension includes a front axle with MacPherson spring struts and forged

track control arms, multi-link rear suspension and the electromechanical power steering system EPS. The ride is pretty firm which was not always ideal on the dirt sections as it was harsh over bumps. The car felt a touch more twitchy at really high speeds on tar, probably a combination of the steering system and some pretty poor country roads. The MINI Countryman comes standard with a three-seater bench in the rear or – as a free option – two individual seats for the passengers. I spent some time in the back and there was plenty of space, a far cry from the rear of the two-door versions.

the innovative Centre Rail storage and fastening system. Clip-in fixtures have a flexible range of positioning that allows the storage area to be divided up as desired, and items to be kept close at hand at all times. Added to which, the Centre Rail creates an unconventional visual and functional connection between the front and rear compartments, when specified with two individual seats in the rear between which it runs. The list of standard equipment for the MINI Countryman includes air conditioning and a CD audio system.

The rear seats slide fore-and-aft individually or in a 60:40 split (three-seat bench), the angle of the backrests can be adjusted, and the backrests can be folded down either individually or in a 40:20:40 split (three-seat bench).

A wide range of customisation options are also available such as exterior paint finishes and interior colours designed exclusively for the Countryman, a host of upholstery variants, trim elements and model-specific equipment items, and high-quality audio and navigation systems.

This allows luggage capacity to be increased from 350 litres to a maximum 1 170 litres. The MINI Countryman is also fitted as standard with

functions. For the petrol engine variants a sixspeed automatic transmission with Steptronic is available as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual. A Tyre Defect Indicator with runflat tyres (across all models) also comes as standard. Customers can also specify a large panoramic sunroof, Adaptive Headlights with xenon lights, a heated windscreen, 17 to 19 inch light-alloy wheels, sports suspension (with the vehicle height lowered by 10mm) and John Cooper Works performance components. The Cooper S uses its 135 kW and 240 Nm 260 Nm with Overboost to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. Top speed is 215 km/h while average consumption according to EU standard is 6.6 litres / 100 km. The naturally aspirated version makes 90 kW and 160 Nm to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in 10.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 190 km/h. Average fuel consumption is only marginally better than the “S” at 6.5 litres / 100 km.

side airbags, curtain head airbags covering both rows of seats, three-point inertia-reel seatbelts for all seats and ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear. The technology contributing to the MINI Countryman’s active safety includes Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which is fitted as standard. BMW 1 Series M coupe

The One And Only

The introduction of the BMW 1 Series M coupe will be the first time that an M model will be available in the premium compact segment. Hot hatches watch out.

T

he BMW 1 Series M Coupe is a fascinating entry to the world of BMW M cars, a modern interpretation of hallmark M characteristics with an outstandingly low power to weight ratio and a level of agility, efficiency and performance which is unsurpassed within the segment as motor racing expertise were used as a basis for drivetrain, chassis and aerodynamics technology. The car will be a four seater with characteristic coupe proportions and the unmistakable features of a BMW M car including a front section with precisely defined air ducting including air curtains. Athletic side section with typical M gills, strikingly flared wheel arches, a powerful rear end and dual tailpipes on both sides. The dynamic proportions with which the BMW 1 series Coupe proclaims a brand of driving pleasure unique within the competitive field provide the perfect foundation for the instantly fascinating appearance of the first ever high performance model in the compact segment. In order to opitimise the aerodynamic properties, so called air curtains are used for the first time in a production vehicle. The inflowing air is routed into two ducts by means of openings in the outer section of the front apron. These openings are designed so that the air flows along the inside of the front

20

ISSUE 67

apron in a closed duct to the wheel arches, where it is discharged through a very narrow opening at high speed, just passing the outer wheel flanks. The escaping air stream covers the side of the front wheels like a curtain, thereby reduc-

ing aerodynamically unfavourable turbulence around the wheel arches. An in line six cylinder engine with outstanding performance, sensational free-revving properties and long lasting thrust provides the BMW 1 series M Coupe with its power source

for delivering supreme driving dynamics. The 3.0 litre power unit combines hallmark M performance characteristics with contemporary efficiency. It has been modified in M style so that it will be able to handle the requirements of both everyday traffic and the race track.

two engine curves to choose from, a cooling system tested on the race track and a powertrain system equipped with a six speed manual transmission. Thanks to all this BMW claim that it can sprint to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and is limited to 250 km/h.

on all road surfaces. The DSC of the BMW 1 series M Coupe includes elements such as ABS, ASC and brake assistant Dynamic Brake Control, a drive off assistant, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), an anti fading function and a dry brake function.

With an engine output of 250 kW, the BMW 1 series M coupe achieves almost exactly the same performance of the third generation M3, while in terms of driving dynamics it is set to be superior to that model, which was replaced just a few years ago.

The M-specific chassis features weight optimised components, typical M axle kinematics and forged aluminium control arms, M differential lock, compound high performance brake system and driving stability regulation including M Dynamic Mode (MDM).

The interior is characteristically M design and exclusive materials are used including trim strips, door panels, cockpit scoop in Alcantara and sports seats in leather with orange contrast stitching.

The M TwinPower Turbo Technology used consists of two relatively small turbocahrgers, are active even at low engine speeds, each providing three cylinders with compressed air.

In creating the vehicle set-up, a procedure which included test runs on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, the interaction of the engine, chassis and body was optimised to create a characteristic, consistent overall set of properties taking into account the low vehicle weight of 1 495 kilograms.

This results in unusually spontaneous level of responsiveness and the maximum torque of 450 Nm is available from as low as 1 500 rpm and is available up to 4 500 rpm and can be increased by another 50 Nm by means of an overboost function. Other features include

Another standard feature is the variable M differential lock. This generates lock-up torque as required and is completely variable up to 100 percent, thus providing optimum traction

The two door model shows its practical qualities with features like four fully-fledged seats, a level of comfort which is geared towards covering lengthy distances and a luggage compartment with a capacity of 370 litres. The BMW 1 series M Coupe goes on sale in South Africa in May 2011.

Jaguar XKR Black Pack

Speedy Surprise Many people’s perception about Jaguar’s are that they are simply all about luxury like the British love to do it. But these perceptions need to change very quickly and models like the XKR Black Pack are doing their best to change this.

Y

ou see, Jaguar designers have taken the already quick XKR and waved some magic over it that they like to call the Speed Pack and the Black Pack.

The Black Pack for added visual impact and to ensure that everybody knows that this is a very serious car and the Speed pack backs up the looks with a significantly increased maximum speed. The model we tested was luckily fitted with both, because we don’t think that the car would be as good fitted with only one of the two. The 5.0 litre supercharged engine delivers 380 kW at 6 000 rpm and 625 Nm of torque at 2 500 rpm in what Jaguar call the most advanced and efficient supercharged engine ever produced. Thanks to the optional Speed pack, the maximum speed of the XKR is raised from 250 km/h to an electronically limited 280 km/h thanks to recalibration of the engine management system. The scary thing is how quickly and effortlessly the car sprinted to this speed, with the speedo indicating 280 km/h the Vbox testing equipment was reading a very impressive 292.59 km/h. Simply by raising the XKR’s maximum speed the car has extended its sporting credentials and is now seriously knocking on the door of much

22

ISSUE 67

more expensive supercars. The Black Pack allows customers to create a bold, extrovert XKR, with the addition of dramatic gloss black 20 inch Kalimnos alloy wheels, gloss black finish to the front air grilles and side Power vents, red brake callipers, a body coloured aerodynamic pack, including a front chin spoiler and larger rear spoiler. The front aerodynamic splitter and larger rear spoiler are there to help the XKR remain stable at the increased top speed by providing in-

creased balanced and a reduction in lift and do a good job of it as the big cat remained calm and controllable all the way to its top speed and back down again. The computerised Active differential control also adjusts to reduce steering sensitivity at very high speeds, further improving stability and driver control. The state of the art six speed automatic transmission has seamless gearshifts, the gearbox can also be put into a full manual mode where the driver can then control the shifting via the

paddles on the steering wheel for an even more involved drive. While an advanced Active differential Control and Adaptive Dynamics suspension system further optimises traction and handling ensuring the supercharged car accelerates even faster, handles even more precisely and sets new standards of ride and comfort. On our test strip this all translated into a 0 – 100 km/h sprint time of 4.8 seconds and a quarter mile crossing in 12.95 seconds. The immense reserves of power and acceleration impressed everyone who experienced it. The performance potential of the supercharged V8 engine comes courtesy of its highly advanced design. The all aluminium four cam power unit has a number of features that deliver power with high efficiency, including spray guided direct injection and dual independent variable cam timing. The engine is built around a stiff, aluminium block with cast iron liners and cross bolted main bearing caps to reduce noise, vibration and harshness. The block is high pressure die-cast, providing a superior finish and greater dimensional accuracy. The engine uses aluminium heads, with four valves per cylinder and spheroidal graphite cast iron crankshafts and forged steel connecting rods. A sixth generation, twin vortex system supercharger provides the forced induction. It is a compact Roots-type unit, feeding air through twin intercoolers. The high helix rotor design improves the supercharger thermodynamic efficiency by more than 20 percent. It also improves noise quality to the

point where the unit is virtually inaudible, unfortunately making the supercharger’s whining a thing of the past. However in addition to the fully active exhaust system in which valves open to provide a more rewarding note, the XKR has been engineered to provide an intake feedback system to enhance the V8 sound character that is normally absent on supercharged engines. Intake manifold pressure pulsations are fed into an acoustic filter at the rear of the engine that is tuned to provide an edgy sports car crescendo at high revs. The filter is controlled by the engine management system, which only allows the sound to enter the cabin under the appropriate driving conditions. This new intake feedback system combined with the fully active exhaust system ensures that the XKR sounds as good as it goes. The driver is the centre of attention in the XKR Special Edition, with exciting new features including the acclaimed JaguarDrive Selector and high levels of specification such as the seven inch touch screen, 16 way heated and cooled memory seats, Jet suede cloth premium headlining and flint grey premium carpet. The Jaguar XKR Speed Pack and Black pack are available as special order, but when we heard the price, R1 300 000, we couldn’t help but wonder how Jaguar did it. Here is a car that looks like a supercar, has the performance of a supercar and is as luxurious as one would expect a Jaguar to be, for far less pennies than most.

Renault Megane Sport Cup

Le Sacre Bleu !

The hot hatch segment is a very popular category in our South African market. Almost every enthusiastic male interested in cars, will or has, owned a hot hatch in their lifetime. This is where a high level of performance can be experienced for a relative amount of money spent.

T

he previous Renault Megane F1 Team R26 was a very strong competitor in the group and took a few accolades over the GTi, OPC, MPS, ST and so on. But now the all-new Megane Sport has been launched in two models, optimised for different target customers. You get your standard Megane RS, and the model we had on test, the Megane RS Cup. The standard RS is tailored for everyday use, but the Cup on the other hand was born to tear up circuits and the street. Compared to the Sport, the chassis, wheels, seats, onboard computer and transmission are notably the major differences between the two. One can see why the Cup belongs on the track, as all of these variations are the ďŹ rst things you look at when setting up for track time. The chassis on the Cup sees anti-roll stiffness that has been increased by 13 percent in front, thanks to a thicker 24.2 millimetre anti-roll bar, along with a seven percent gain at the rear. You also get ultra low-proďŹ le 235/35 19 inch tyres and a limited slip differential (LSD) as standard, and this keeps the cup glued to the road. Braking performance features four-piston Brembo callipers combined with 340 millimetre ventilated discs in front and 290 millimetre discs at the rear. In the case of the Cup, the discs are

24

ISSUE 67

grooved and the callipers painted red. The stopping power is phenomenal! The only hot hatch that I think that may compete with the RS Cup on the whole suspension set-up is the Honda Civic Type R. Other than that, the Megane blows the competition out of the water. The Megane is just so convincing. The powerplant in the Cup is based on the previous 2.0 litre turbocharged

F1 Team R26, but has been revised with more than 25 percent new engine components. The result is that this Megane now delivers 184 kW of power at 5 500 rpm, matched to 340 Nm of torque at 3 000 rpm. Very strong indeed, but unfortunately the Megane did not take the top spot in the sprints,

as that still belongs to the much weaker Golf 6 GTi. The GTi does however come equipped with launch control so that helped it when compared to the manual Renault. Against the clock, we got a quick 0-100 km/h time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 242 km/h. These times are still really good. I even taught a few of the older modified hot hatches a lesson or two when I caught them on the road while driving the Cup. A new feature of the Megane RS is the Renault Sport Dynamic Management three-mode ESP system, which allows the driver to choose the degree of electronic aid required in different situations, in three stages. This includes the default ‘On’ mode, ‘Sport’ for less intrusive ESP action, and ‘Off’ for ultimate driver control.

caro, tuck you in and hold you in place while you throw the car around. A chunky steering wheel with yellow stitching and distinctive Renault Sport badging on the door sills, headrests, rev counter and dashboard all add to the race appeal of the cabin. I absolutely loved the Renault Megane RS Cup and I think it’s the best driver’s hot hatch that money can buy! It retails for R399 900 which includes a five year / 100 000 km Service Plan along with Renaults comprehensive five year / 150 000 km warranty.

Another function that is equipped in the Cup only is the Renault Sport Monitor in the centre console. It displays an array of real-time data, such as power, torque and turbo pressure, and performance data such as 0-100 km/h, 400 metre and 1 km standing start times. Which of course you should not be trying to watch while flying around a track or anywhere else for that matter.

Refined Performance Putting high performance cars against each other in a highly controlled road test shootout environment is nothing new. Take a group of cars to a circuit, put the same highly trained test driver in each of them and attach your state of the art test equipment, read the numbers, and voila you have a winner.

B

ut what happens when you put these same cars into the real world with everyday drivers using a set of real world rules by which to settle the shootout, and the naked eye to judge who has got away from who?

best car was going to win when the lights went green… And from that moment, things went all Jeremy Clarkson; you know where he sits all day and night in a car just trying to vocally input a SAT NAV destination, and you think, this can’t be real, this is just TV.

Well I can assure you, the results are nothing short of completely useless and inconsistent, and are also totally entertaining in a way that would make the average German car engineer commit suicide by slamming the bonnet of his car on his head a few hundred times.

Well I can tell you it is not, because the lights changed green and the C63 smoked and snaked away in simple auto mode as it has no launch control. The M3 sat there for a moment or two because the launch control flag had dropped before the lights changed and had to be reactivated before it could get away.

The catalyst for this test was the arrival of the much-anticipated Audi RS 5 Coupe at our offices. This car is said to be Audi’s answer to BMW’s mighty M3, Merc’s monstrous C63 and Lexus’ clinical IS-F. So to prove its street cred, we took to the ‘streets’ and set up a shootout with a few friends who drive the likes of an M3 and a C63. We couldn’t find anybody who drove an IS-F though, so it became a three way challenge amongst the Germans. Our ‘streets’ was still a controlled environment for safety and moral reasons, but as mentioned, the rules were as per the street, and we had a good old-fashioned red to green traffic light as our starter, and the cars would each be driven by their owners. To the line we went, testosterone flying all over the place, the bets were down, the moment of truth had arrived, forget power claims, the

26

ISSUE 67

The RS 5 on the other hand did nothing, but sort of leave the line at a fairly decent pace and then try and make up the difference lost at the line, because the launch control refused to activate. Right! Back to our ‘traffic lights’, and again the C63 smoked and snaked away in prehistoric auto only mode, but this time the driver of the M3 had got the timing of the lights right and blasted through the tyre smoke and got ahead of the C63. We had a new winner. The RS5 once again decided to opt out of the fight and refused to activate its launch control. And this

And as for the RS 5, it continued to refuse to take part in our test (Audi SA – we read the book, we then called, we did as you said and we changed drivers, it did not activate) and had to come in last, because without being able to launch in this sort of company, even with 331 kW and 430 Nm of 4.2 litre V8 naturally aspirated power underfoot, these cars are going to hammer you. Ironically though, the next day when we took the RS 5 to Gerotek and strapped all the test equipment in and let the car know that it was time to get serious as these were the numbers that were going to go down in our test record book, launch control worked each and every time without fail, and has continued to do so??? For the record, the RS 5 got to 100 km/h in 5.41 seconds, crossed the ¼ mile and 1km mark at 13.62 seconds and 214.98 km/h respectively, which is still fractionally slower than the others, but it is right in the performance ball park.

was to remain the story of the day. The Merc and the BMW would swap wins and the Audi would sit back and watch. The C63, properly tested at 5.10 seconds to 100 km/h, would go all day long in any environment, but it did so in a cloud of expensive and sprint time robbing tyre smoke without any electronic aid. It is like going fast for dummies, and as such, it is our number 1 choice for straight-line street racing. The M3 with a full 200 Nm less torque than the Merc, did the proper test at 5.22 seconds, but at our real world test it was only competitive when you could time the changing of the lights perfectly to the cars self made decision as to when it will launch, and comes in second.

Audi say you can order your RS 5 with the option of a higher 280 km/h speed limiter, which will let you see off the others who stop long before then, and our test car ran an impressive 275 km/h true at the power sapping altitude of The Reef. I will go so far as to say that had the launch control worked when it should have, the RS 5 might have been at the top in the street battle due to the superior grip offered by quattro permanent all-wheel drive. This then brings us to handling, and once again I say that the RS 5 would be the quicker car from A-B on the road or the track in the average person’s hands. It is stable and surefooted make no mistake, but if you are skilled and enjoy your ride to a little bit more of an entertaining affair, then this luxury coupe is not for you. I was going to get into detail about the fuel consumption of the RS 5 at this stage, but to

be honest; I am not so sure how many owners who are paying at least R907 540 for a top of the range performance coupe are really going to care. I will say that getting even close to Audi’s 10.8 litres / 100 km should prove impossible, expect to see 15 litres and above more often than not, I averaged 17. I liked the RS 5 in a ‘car you would drive every day’ kind of way, it has style, although too similar to the S5 for my liking, lots of luxury, class leading build quality and decent performance to round off a top class package. But I can’t see myself getting all excited and rising early on Sunday morning to clean my car so that I can take it out and go for a breakfast run with the boys. I can see myself doing this in BMW’s M3 though, and that is why the M3 is my overall pick in this impromptu shootout.

system output. This model is driven primarily by a supercharged three litre V6 with direct gasoline injection developing maximum output of 248 kW.

First up is the Cayenne 3.6 litre that uses a V6 engine to produce 220 kW transferring this power through a six speed manual gearbox but the eight speed Tiptronic S is available as an option.

The modern power unit interacts with an electric motor delivering 34 kW output and peak torque of 300 Nm maintained consistently up to a speed of 1 150 rpm.

The Cayenne Diesel makes use of a 3.0 litre V6 to produce 176 kW that is delivered through the standard eight speed Tiptronic S gearbox. The Cayenne S features a 4.8 litre V8 that produces 294 kW. It also uses the eight speed Tiptronic S gearbox while PTM with active all wheel drive ensure traction in all conditions. This is the first time that Porsche is using a V6 with direct injection and supercharging as the primary source of power. Cayenne S Hybrid is a parallel full hybrid that uses a 3.0 litre supercharged V6 and synchronous electric motor to deliver a 279 kW overall

Lastly the Cayenne Turbo boasts an awesome 368 kW thanks to its 4.8 litre biturbo V8. Gearchanges are taken care of by the very capable eight speed Tiptronic S gearbox. Porsche Traction Management (PTM) with active all wheel drive keeps traction in check. Porsche say that the Turbo is capable of a 0 – 100 km/h sprint of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 278 km/h. Porsche also say that the significant reduction in fuel consumption was due to, among other things, the new eight speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission complete with Auto Start Stop and an even wider range of gear increments, thermal management on the engine

and the transmission cooling circuit, recuperation of the on board network, variable overrun cut-off and a reduction of weight thanks to a lightweight construction. Porsche has developed the first Tiptronic S with eight gears for the new Cayenne. This transmission stands out for its efficiency and fast gearshifts that ensures supreme shifting and driving comfort. The overall range of gear spread is up by approximately 20 percent and that means that the extra two gears are genuine overdrive or economy gears consistently keeping the engine in the optimum speed and load range at all times. Benefiting from intelligent shift programs, the driver is able to control the shift behaviour of the transmission through the gas and brake pedals. The gearbox also offers an offroad mode that comprises of a gearshift program specifically tailored to off road requirements with focus on extra traction and the precise dosage of engine power. As a result, the new Cayenne offers even more driving pleasure than before both onroad and offroad, combined with even greater everyday driving qualities, enhanced comfort and supreme elegance.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

More Than Grand Jeep’s are known for offering the ultimate in all-terrain capability, enabling owners to go past paved roads and enjoy adventures other SUV owners can only dream about.

A

s the inventors of the SUV segment you can be sure Jeep knows what they are doing when it comes to building a SUV offering real-world capability. The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee certainly lives up to its profound heritage. At first glance you can unmistakably identify it as a Jeep thanks to some key characteristics like Jeep’s classic seven-slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel arches. What makes this new model so revolutionary is that every surface of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is treated for aerodynamics. This improves fuel efficiency and puts more fluidity into the design while delivering an 8.5-percent improvement in drag compared with the previous model. This also improves the off-road capability due to the fact that there’s little space underneath the vehicle where ground-clearance is compromised. From the side, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee features an athletic, muscular but sleek profile which sits on stunning 20-inch wheels, standard on Overland models. The Grand Cherokee also has an All-new dualpane panoramic sun roof; it extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle. Comprised of two glass panels with power open / close sun shade. It also has an all-new power rear liftgate

32

ISSUE 67

for effortless remote up/down convenience. It’s very clear that from the outside the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is a force to be reckoned with, but what about the interior? As soon as you enter the vehicle you are greeted by pristine interior you might not expect from such a capable vehicle. It’s very clear that Jeep has paid equal attention to the interior, using only premium soft-touch interior materials for all models, including leather instrument panel and door trim on the Overland model. It doesn’t just look great, it also offers worldclass interior features like real wood and leather, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, four-way power lumbar controls, rain-sensitive wipers, Keyless Enter-N-Go, ParkView rear back-up camera and power tilt/telescoping steering column with memory. There’s also been an increase in storage space throughout the entire car. Now that’s enough about the looks, let’s see what this off-road conquering SUV is capable of. Our destination was the Legend Golf & Safari Resort in Limpopo, we departed from the Royal Elephant Hotel in Centurion, and this meant we had about 300 kilometres to see how the Grand Cherokee fares on normal everyday roads. First on the hit list was the legendary 5.7-litre, multidisplacement System (MDS) V8 engine capable of delivering 259 kW and 520 Nm of torque at

4 250 rpm. After only a couple of metres it was very clear that this vehicle means business. It handled superbly for such a large vehicle thanks to the all-new front and rear independent suspension, delivering premium on-road manners with isolated front and rear suspension cradles and variable-rate rear springs that combine to enhance on-road character and ride comfort. The Grand Cherokee feels surprisingly at home on the wide open road. After a quick pit-stop I found myself in the passenger seat, this gave me some time to play around with the entertainment system. Like you would expect it has an amazing built in navigation system for taking your adventure off-road. The entertainment system combines the features of a Global Positioning System (GPS), with numerous other features like in-vehicle voice-activated phone and Bluetooth capability. The built-in phone book’s sync feature automatically downloads as many as 1 000 phone book entries from supported phones, which can then be selected by simply saying contact name. The hands-free option promotes safety, freedom, value and flexibility. The Grand Cherokee features premium audio system with nine speakers, surround sound and a 506 watt subwoofer. The Grand Cherokee is also one of the

ride height. And if you’re looking for increased performance aerodynamics, the Aero Mode setting is just the thing for you; it lowers the vehicle 15 mm from NRH. Aero mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts for optimal performance and fuel economy. Quadra-Lift adds up to 104 mm of lift span that is supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride. Quadra-Lift operates automatically, or may be controlled manually via console controls. In addition to the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the all-new Selec-Terrain traction control system allows customers to choose the offroad setting for the optimum experience on all terrains. This feature electronically coordinates up to 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, Traction Control and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

safest SUV’s ever produced thanks to numerous cutting-edge safety features like Electronic Stability Control (ESC) which includes Electronic Roll Mitigation, Hill-start Assist, Trailer-sway Control and Hill-descent Control. It has full-length side curtain air bags and seatmounted side thorax air bags, blind spot/Rear cross-path detection, Adaptive Cruise Control (late availability) and Forward Collision Warning (late availability) making this one tech-filled, adventure hungry, bush conquering SUV. After a good night’s rest we were ready to hit the trail, our route takes as through some of the most amazing off-road terrain in South Africa. Now we can see what this new Grand Cherokee is really capable of as off-road capability is what Jeep’s all about, and let me tell you it didn’t fail to impress. As we ventured into the unknown it was clear that this was no ordinary SUV, it made mincemeat of any obstacle we encountered and once again proven it has stayed true to its Jeep heritage. Something that largely contributed

to the Grand Cherokee’s capabilities was the new Quadra-Lift air suspension system and electronic Limited-slip Differential. The QuadraLift air suspension system features five height settings for optimum ride performance. Firstly there was the Normal ride height setting. This sets the car at a respectable ride height of 270 mm for good clearance that offers improved fuel economy and improved aerodynamics during on-road driving. Secondly there’s the Off-road 1 setting which lifts the vehicle an additional 33 mm for added height in clearing obstacles. And for some hardcore off-road driving there’s the Off-road 2 setting, this setting delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and provides an additional 66mm of height for 270 mm of ground clearance. Something that may prove very handy is the Park Mode setting; it lowers the vehicle 40 mm from NRH for easy ingress / egress and roof rack loading. NRH and Park mode are driverselectable, giving the driver control over vehicle

The Selec-Terrain’s control dial allows the driver to choose from five driving conditions in order to achieve the best driving experience on all terrains. The options include Sand/Mud, Sport, Auto, Snow and Rock, making this the ultimate all-terrain vehicle. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in a all-new flexible-fuel 3.6-liter V6 engine which produces 210 kW and 347 Nm of torque at 4 800 rpm and of course the legendary 5.7-liter Multi-displacement System (MDS) V8 engine which delivers 259 kW and 520 Nm of torque at 4 250 rpm. Launched BMW X3

Conquer New Terrain The launch of the new X3 sees the introduction of a second generation Sports Activity Vehicle with significantly increased space, optimised functionality and enhanced driving comfort.

T

he design of the new BMW X3 combines the typical BMW X character with a dynamically stretched silhouette. Thanks to a generous amount of space and a high degree of variability in the interior, it is possible to adapt travel comfort as well as transportation capacities to suit each personal requirement. Compared with the predecessor model, the BMW X3 is characterised by a significant increase in comfort and interior space. Yet in terms of exterior dimensions the car is not hugely bigger,

length is increased by 83 mm, width by 28 mm and height by 12 mm.

35i, while a 3.0 litre diesel will be added to the lineup later in 2011.

With a volume of between 550 and 1 600 litres, the luggage compartment of the X3 is one of the leaders in the segment. Variability with which space can be adapted to suit your needs is unique as the backrest can be split at a ratio of 40:20:40, whereby the three sections can be folded down individually or together.

The BMW X3 xDrive20d straight four cylinder diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger and common rail direct injection. It produces 135 kW at 4 000 rpm and 380 Nm from 1 750 rpm. BMW claim that it can sprint to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 210 km/h. This model impresses with the lowest fuel consumption and CO2 emissions levels in its class. BMW claim that it will only use 5.6 litres / 100 kilometres which equates to a range of more than 1 000 kilometres.

At launch the X3 will be available with two engine choices, the xDrive20d and xDrive

4x4 Test

Nissan Pathfinder 3.0 dCi 4x4

On The Right Track At the heart of Nissan’s latest flagship 3.0 V6 dCi, lies a true modern masterpiece of cutting edge engineering and thinking. This is the engine which is destined to power the future of Nissans luxury off roaders and LCV’s into the future thanks to its combination of power, environmental friendliness and extra smooth driving experience.

T

he amazing thing with this engine was the lack of clatter, normally associated with a diesel engine. More than one occasion we struggled to convince people that this is a diesel Pathfinder as they were adamant it sounded like a petrol engine.

and a smoother, more integrated bumper. The bonnet is also new and contributes to the improved aerodynamics. In terms of styling we like the rear handle and the lines which looks much more European than some of the Japanese competition.

pleasure to drive. When testing the Navara we commented that the Nissan 4x4 system was very easy to use, but in the Pathfinder it is even easier. With an auto setting it is basically always in 4 wheel drive, transferring power to the wheels that have the best traction.

The V6 turbodiesel produces an impressive 170 kW at 3 750 rpm and a mammoth 550 Nm at 1 700 rpm as well as improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

Inside both models have been made more appealing thanks to the use of higher quality materials that contribute to a remarked improvement to cabin fit and finish. A new switchgear complements the centre console.

This is very safe as the all wheel drive system will always be there to help you on slippery or dirt roads, without the need to fiddle with any knobs or buttons.

These class leading levels of torque and highly competitive specific power outputs are delivered thanks to the fitment of a large single turbocharger, mounted within the 65 degree vee of the engine, an intercooler and the use of the latest generation Bosch common rail fuel injection. This translates into strong low end performance with refined delivery and exemplary throttle response. In addition the engine helps provide strong towing performance, with the Pathfinder capable of towing a 3 500 kilogram braked trailer. Although the V9X engine is undoubtebly a highlight of the vehicle, Nissan has reinforced the sophisticated demeanour with a revised front end and enhanced interior design. The exterior is updated with a chrome gilted grille design

38

ISSUE 67

Occupant safety is comprehensive. There are front and side airbags for both front passengers and curtain airbags to absorb the side on incidents. ABS, EBD, BA and VDC as well as Active Brake Limited Slip are all there to help the driver stay out of an accident situation. These systems compliment the Intelligent Driving Control 4WD setup and in the Pathfinder this system has an Auto mode which relegates this decision to the myriad of sensors positioned around the vehicle and a high speed, dedicated microprocessor. With all of this technology under the bonnet, attention was also given to upgrade the suspension with new spring rates and shock absorber rebound calibrations. This added chassis balance and ride quality make the Pathfinder an unmatched

Driving in tricky situations one can feel the system transferring power which is a good thing for S.A roads. When provoked on a dirt road the Pathfinder tends to oversteer then understeer thanks to help from the 4x4 system and not oversteer like a bakkie, which could be dangerous as it is more difficult for an inexperienced driver to correct. Visibility is good in all directions, even out the rear and the reversing camera also eliminates the need to twist your neck when reversing. Lionel commented that on bad roads it drives better than a sports car. The 17 inch tyres are good, but this did mean that the tyres were slightly too low in terms of their profile, the trend is however for bigger rims on cars these days. Climbing into the rear is easier than some

of the competition and rear legroom is fair, one must however make sure that you extend the headrest fully or else it is going to irritate you in the middle of your back. There is also rear aircon, cupholders and very comfortable door armrests to keep passengers in the back happy. If need be folding of the rear seat is simplified as one simply needs to pull on the webbing tabs, an advantage of this is that there is no risk of accidently sitting on any hard seat folding levers. Ergonomically the Pathfinder impressed in all areas, while the centre console and dashboard also impressed with good levels of quality and the use of high quality materials. The only criticism we had is that the boot door is too low for tall people to stand under it, an easy fix would be for the boot to be changed to a barn door style. Another thing that we did find is that, due to the fact that the front doors open so wide one really has to reach out of the vehicle to get to the handle in order to close the door once seated inside the vehicle. Another thing that bothered us on the Pathfinder, like on the Navara was the rather low ground clearance, mainly due to the low side steps. We also felt that the radiator was also still vulnerable underneath, as experience has seen radiators damage from impact on 4x4 adventures in the past. In the bigger scheme of things these are fairly minimal snags as they can easily be overcome by the guys at your

local L.A Sport branch. The Pathfinder uses a keyless entry and starting system, with a turn knob in the place where one would normally insert and turn the key. This is nice for when you don’t have a spare hand to get the key out of your pocket, but when inside, where do you put the key, if not in your pocket, and when leaving the car you still have to press the lock button to lock the car. This is not only true for the Pathfinder but for many keyless entry equipped vehicles, call us old fashioned but we still prefer a traditional key, like the Navara has. At R620 000 Lionel did however feel that the vehicle was a bit expensive, there is a lot of good 4x4 SUV vehicles available in this price segment, making the choice so much more difficult.

Honda Marine BF115

Cleaner And Meaner Honda Marine Introduces BF 115 hp outboard engines featuring improved levels of performance and fuel economy.

H

onda Marine announced that it will improve upon its award-winning lineup of fuel-injected four-stroke outboard engines with the new BF115.

The BF115 is derived from the inline four cylinder 2.4 liter DOHC engine platform used in Honda’s award-winning and popular Accord automobile the largest displacement engine in its class. As a result of the outstanding performance of this engine, coupled with the advanced technologies it incorporates, the BF115 is able to produce class-leading performance with outstanding fuel efficiency and reliability. For example, holeshot and acceleration are dramatically improved via the use of Honda Marine’s exclusive BLAST system, which advances

42

ISSUE 67

ignition spark timing to within one degree of the knock limit during ‘hammer down’ acceleration. At that point, the Engine Control Module (ECM) steps in to increase injector timing, creating a more potent air/fuel mixture. In fact, the ECM receives constant input from 18 different sensors to deliver instant starts, smooth operation, strong performance and excellent fuel efficiency. Specifically, the BF115 reduces fuel consumption by 19 percent over the previous model, per Honda R&D internal testing data. The resulting boost in available torque at low rpm contributes to a strong holeshot to get the boat up on plane quickly. The ignition spark timing is appropriately adjusted under slower throttle advancement, resulting in a leaner air/

fuel mix and class-leading fuel efficiency. The in-line four cylinder BF115 outboard engine features a powerful and compact Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) design that creates more valve lift to pull in more air for increased horsepower. In addition, a Multi-Port Electronic Fuel Injection system (PGM-FI) accurately controls ignition timing and fuel flow during start-up to provide instant throttle response regardless of weather conditions. The system also helps improve overall fuel efficiency by maintaining an optimal air/fuel mixture across the rpm range. Further contributing to the engine’s outstanding fuel efficiency is Honda’s exclusive Lean Burn Control, which pairs the ECU with a linear

air/fuel sensor to adjust the air/fuel mixture according to speed and load, maximising efficiency in cruise mode. For smooth engine operation, twin counter balancing shafts have been integrated into the new BF115. This addition provides ultra low vibration operation throughout the entire RPM range. The engine’s 55-amp alternator (40 amps of battery charging) ignition and other critical electrical components are mounted near the top of the powerhead to ensure that all are kept cool and dry. By extension, a camshaft-driven, automotive-style oil pump ensures long-term durability of critical engine components. The BF115 utilises an Engine Alert System that monitors vital engine functions and helps in preventing engine damage by alerting the operator of overheating, low oil PSI, over-rev, water in fuel, battery condition and other critical engine functions. Honda’s exclusive double-sealed and multilayered 4-Front Corrosion Protection (paint) System has been incorporated into the design of the BF115, as well as several other features designed to minimise damage caused by the harsh marine environment. Specifically, painted

interior cooling passages have been added to the engine’s design for long-term durability. For anglers, a dealer-installed option is available to allow for push button variable speed control. With a simple push up or down of a button, customers can control their speed in increments of 50 rpm from 650 rpm to 900 rpm. In addition to improved fuel efficiency and performance characteristics, the BF115 incorporates a number of features designed to facilitate maintenance. An automotive-type oil filter and colour-coded oil fill and dipstick simplify fluid level checks and changes. The low-maintenance design of the DOHC engine allows for easy adjustment of the rocker arms, preventing the need for multiple shims or trial-and-error adjusting - also making the design compatible with Honda’s HDS portable diagnostic system to facilitate on-water service. All new Honda outboard engines sold for recreational use offer a three year, non-declining limited factory warranty that is the same on the last day as it is on the first. Important to most boaters, the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) on the new BF115 outputs signals

that are compliant with National Marine Electronic Association (NMEA) 2000 standards. This design enhancement allows engine ma-nagement information such as engine rpm, fuel consumption, cruising distance and alerts to be displayed on a variety of NMEA 2000-compatible onboard electronic display devices, such as sonar and GPS. Honda Marine pioneered four-stroke engine technology, setting a new benchmark for fuel efďŹ ciency, quiet operation, and low emissions. Honda’s outboards share the same outstanding durability, quality, and reliability of its legendary automobiles. With models ranging from 2 to 225 horsepower, Honda Marine’s full line of current production models meets rigorous California Air Resources Board (CARB) three Star standards, ensuring their availability and regulatory compliance across the world.

How to be safe

How To Be Safe

To avoid impeding the operation and to decrease the risk of injury and increase the safety of all persons on board, the operator of the craft should not overload the craft, in excess of the “Recommended Gross Load Capacity” or the “equivalent number of adult persons”

A

lways position the persons on board and the gear so as to evenly distribute the weight: too much weight in the bow makes the craft plow through the water with a risk of swamping; too much weight in the stern, raises the bow which wastes power and makes it difficult to see and try to keep the load as low as possible on the craft.

1. Moor the boat securely to prevent spillage.

Always lash the gear, or stow the gear in lockers to prevent uncontrolled movement of the gear.

6. Turn off electrical switches and batteries, and refrain from operating electrical devices.

The operator of a pleasure craft should inform persons on board about the following safety points. Firstly the location of personal floatation devices and/or life-jackets; the techniques for putting on personal floatation devices and/or life-jackets when in the water; the importance of wearing personal floatation devices and/or life-jackets at all times. He should also point out the location of the emergency kit and the importance of keeping oneself low, on the center line, and holding on to a rigid part of the pleasure craft while moving around on board. Make everyone aware of the importance of keeping one’s hands, arms and legs inside the pleasure craft when approaching or leaving a dock. Also keep in mind the effects of the motion of the pleasure craft has on its passengers, this includes the amount of sunlight, waves, wind, sound and alcohol on them. Also inform your passengers of their roles in the event of emergencies. Follow these procedures, step by step, when refueling. It only makes good sense, it’s the law.

46

ISSUE 67

2. Shut off all engines. 3. Insist that all passengers go ashore. 4. Extinguish all open flames. 5. Do not smoke while refueling.

7. Close all windows, portholes, hatches and cabin doors. 8. Remove portable tanks from the boat before refueling. 9. Know the capacity of your fuel tank and don’t overfill it; you have a duty to prevent leakage or spillage or fuel into the hull or water. 10. Operate the engine compartment blower for at least four minutes immediately before starting up the gasoline engine. Any enclosed space that contains fuel-burning engines or appliances should be well ventilated. In addition to the fire hazard, fuel-burning apparatus can pose an unseen threat - Carbon Monoxide, a colourless, odourless gas, can build up undetected below deck. Enclosed gasoline engine and fuel tank compartments must be fitted with a blower and an under way ventilation system in accordance with the Construction Standards for Small Vessels. While on your boat, you must attend

to an open flame heating, cooking or refrigeration system that uses gaseous fuel. Gas fumes and leaking propane or butane are all heavier than air and will flow rapidly into the lower parts of the boat. These substances are extremely difficult to remove and are highly explosive. Also, any portable cooking or heating appliance should be secured to guard against leakage due to any unexpected movement of the vessel. Be sure that the fuel-burning equipment installation is in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended practices. It is very important to slow down in bad weather and to adopt a safe speed, described as one that allows proper and effective action to be taken to decrease the risk of causing injuries or loss of life to persons on board. A boat travelling at high speed requires increased stopping distance and gives the operator less time to react to an emergency.

The Aquatic Motorbike SeaDoo Challenger 230

What could be better then zipping across the surface of the water at highway speeds? Pulling hairpin turns, jumping boat wakes, and ripping zig-zags tighter then a scared jackrabbit being chased by a bobcat?

H

ow about doing all of this without ever coming close to losing control, without having to worry about running aground, and without having to worry about a spinning meat-cleaver under the hull of your boat? Sea-Doo’s new 230 Challenger SE lets you barrel through the bay without any of these worries, thanks to a direct drive propulsion system which depends on a water jet instead of a prop. Yeah, yeah, I know: jet drives lose a bit more power than a prop as they transfer the engine’s torque into thrust. But don’t worry about that; the 230 Challenger has a whopping 510 horses (provided by twin 255’s) throbbing belowdecks (430-hp models are also available), which is an outrageous amount of power for a boat this small in the first place. Any oomph that’s lost in translation is more than made up for with cubic inches. The powerplants are Rotax 4-TECs, the latest version of a “clean” two-stroke jet drive engine. And clean they are, meeting the California Air Resources Board requirements for a threestar “ultra low emissions” rating. Power is turned into thrust via a 6 ¾-inch axial-flow jet drive with a stainless-steel impeller. Just how fast does the 230 go with this much power? While testing it we busted past 90 km/h even though there was a wind-swept two-foot chop. In calmer waters, I’d expect to easily get two or three more km/h out of the boat. And acceleration is nothing short of head-snapping, with a zero-point-nothing time to plane. I found the ride surprisingly smooth, too. Many sport boats in this class aren’t really designed to handle waves over a foot, and pound or bang when they hit a serious chop. But the 230 has a 21-degree transom deadrise (as much of a deep-V as many center consoles offer) and plenty of beef to back it up—displacement comes in at 3,500 pounds. It was a dry ride, too, which surprised me a bit considering the swept-down angle of the bow. A closer look, however, shows that the upper section of the bow is unusually broad and has a chine designed into the upper portion. It effectively throws spray down, where it belongs, and keeps it out of the cockpit. Is there a down-side to this unique design? None I could identify, except for the unusual looks. Despite the (small) overall power loss there are some serious benefits to running via jet; the most obvious, of course, is the elimination of the propeller. For water skiers, toy-towers, and wakeboarders, this is a big advantage. That “what if” that’s in the back of every captain’s mind as he approaches a person in the water is forever erased. On top of the safety advantage, running aground with a jet drive is a lot less expensive (read: no lower unit and propeller repair bills), draft is reduced to one foot (at least nine inches less than a prop-driven boat running on plane), and bowrise when coming onto plane is practically eliminated. The control boost you’ll experience, however, is an entirely different advantage.

ISSUE 67

49

The boat is steered via directed thrust, and response at the wheel is instantaneous and enhanced. The boat feels more like an extension of your body—think of it as driving a Porsche, versus a Lincoln. Dockside handling is also enhanced, with the ability to more or less hover in place thanks to “Docking Assist”. This feature tweaks the engine RPM as you turn the wheel, allowing you to pirouette the boat on a pinhead, much less spin it on a dime. Added Bonus: the Rotax has a closedloop cooling system, so cooling intake problems are a thing of the past and longevity is extended. On the flip side, there are jet intake problems to deal with. In most cases, however, these are limited to sucking up weeds or plastic bags, which usually fall off when the boat is shut down, or can be removed by hand. Another plus to this power arrangement is the ability to use every square inch of the boat, from stem to stern. There are no big outboards hogging the transom, and no giant motor box protruding into the cockpit. Instead, you’ll find seating that extends all the way through the stern, an easy transom walk-through, and then a swim platform. Flip up the stern seat to access the powerplants. The bow mimics this arrangement with easy forward boarding from beaches and docks, thanks to that down-swept design.

50

In the bow cockpit, surround-seating creates a cushy environment for a half-dozen passengers and a hatch at the front stows tow-toys, anchors, or whatever you like. What about those water skis? They’ll fit into the longer stowage compartment under the seats. Helm and passenger’s chairs are swiveling flip-up bolster seats. They’re comfy but in my case, seemed to be a bit too low in the boat. I wanted to stand while operating it but then the windshield was too low – I was darned if I did, and darned if I didn’t. Luckily those seats are adjustable; the windshield, of course, is not. It could just be my frame, but check to see if you find the arrangement appropriate for your body size before you buy. Overall, these different parts of the boat provide room

for an even dozen people. Even though this is the largest Sea-Doo on the water, that’s one heck of a load for a 23-footer. When we tested the 230 there were only three of us aboard. Still, with the amount of elbow room I experienced, I’d say you won’t feel cramped with the entire family and a friend or two aboard. Additional touches like snapin cockpit carpet, a removable bow cockpit table, a six-speaker satellite-ready AM/FM stereo with MP3 player, a sunpad, and a removable cooler boost the comfort factor even farther. How did Sea-Doo cram so much space into a 23-foot, 6-inch LOA platform? Part of the secret is in the beam: the Challenger 230 is 8-feet, 9-inches wide, a full three inches more

than the beam found on most boats in this class. It gets you the interior space boost, no doubt, but in many areas of the nation it’ll also get you a ticket if you try to haul it down the highway; in most states 8-feet, 6-inches is the maximum allowable width without a special permit. Then again, who cares? Why would you want to banish this puppy to land-travel, when you could be zipping to your destination on the water, ripping zig-zags and pulling hairpin turns along the way?

Launching a Boat

Launching a Boat

Proper preparation is the key to safely launching your boat. The time spent getting ready prior to launching your boat will save time at the ramp and reduce the pressure to rush the process at the last minute. Think of it as a courtesy to your fellow boaters and a way to ensure good karma. Your turn will come someday as you patiently wait for the inept driver making their fourth attempt at backing the boat trailer down the ramp.

A

n inspection of your boat prior to using it again is important. There is always the possibility that an outdrive was damaged, a thru-hull fitting has failed or damage has occurred to the hull. Damage can occur while you use the boat or trailer it to the water. Before you try to back down the launch ramp, take a few steps to ensure the boat comes off the trailer as it should. Raise your outdrive or outboard motor to prevent it from striking the ramp surface. Remove tie-down straps and binders. Make sure the boat winch is engaged and attached to the eyebolt on the bow of your boat. Boat trailers come in a few different styles. One version out there is a trailer that uses rubber rollers to hold the boat on the trailer and allow it to slide off the trailer easily. Roller trailers work as intended. If you forget to attach the winch to the boat, the boat will roll off the trailer as you back down the ramp. While you are waiting to launch your boat, check the fuel level, vital fluids and that you remembered all your safety equipment. Check that you installed the drain plug. Some launching checklists mention this item at every step. Launching a boat is always easier with a friend. It has also started many domestic conflicts. Have one person back the boat down the ramp and another holding a pre-attached line to

ISSUE 67

guide the boat off the trailer. Boaters launching at many lakes need to have an operator in the boat ready to drive it away from trailer once it is in the water. Now you know how to prepare for life at the launch ramp.

ing on the region, some launch ramps can be very long and possibly very steep. Now is the time to demonstrate your superior skill in backing the boat trailer down the ramp. Practice really does help.

Take a look at some of these pre-launching preparations. Firstly prepare your boat for launching away from the ramp as a courtesy to others and to prevent rushing during the launch. Ensure that there has been no damage to the boat caused by the trip to the harbour.

As the trailer enters the water, keep your rear wheels out of the water. Wet brakes are less effective. Salt water will cause damage to the brake components and it can leak into the rear differential as well.

Visually inspect the launch ramp for hazards such as a steep drop off, slippery areas and sharp objects. When everything has been double checked, proceed slowly to the ramp remembering that your boat is just resting on the trailer and attached only at the bow. The ideal situation is to have one person in the boat and one observer at the water’s edge to help guide the driver of the tow vehicle. Next we take a look at taking the plunge at the launch-ramp; it’s time to get your boat wet. Actually launching your boat should be easy. You are prepared, right? Most public launch ramps are busy places. As you approach the ramp, watch for traffic and observe any directional signs. Watch other boaters as they line up for the ramp and follow their example. Some facilities will have employees present to help direct traffic. Depend-

Set the parking brake and insure the transmission is in park. Place manual transmissions in the lowest gear that is in the direction of roll. This would be reverse! If it is possible to leave the driver in the vehicle, this is your safest option. Now you need to get the boat ready. Lower the outdrive or outboard motor into the water. Ensure fuel lines are connected and primed. Look for leaks. If your boat has an engine compartment blower installed, turn it on to reduce the chance of explosion. Start the engine and check to see if cooling water is circulating properly. Now is the time to unhook the winch from the boat. Drive the tow vehicle and trailer off the ramp as soon as you can. The next person in line will thank you.

New Aprilia Tuono V4

T

he new 120 kw (162 hp) V4 Tuono has kept the style and soul of the bruising V-twin it replaces, according to the man who designed it.

The new bike follows the basic design principles of the original RSV1000 Tuono, which was a sportsbike with a super-naked restyle but few mechanical changes. It’s a formula that worked extremely well – the Tuono was enduringly popular, and is still regarded as one of the best sporty naked bikes. But the RSV twin has been phased out, so the next generation Tuono took the all-new RSV4 superbike as the basis – the first Aprilia superbike with an engine designed and built in house. Miguel Galuzzi spoke at the Milan show as the RSV4 Tuono R was unveiled, explaining that it took more than tearing the plastics from an RSV4 to create it. He said: “We wanted to keep the DNA of the old bike,” he explained. “That was the most difficult part, because the old bike was a big bike, and the new one is small. It was a bike you could ride hard, and we wanted to follow what the Tuono is and should be. “It rides much better than the old bike, but it has kept the spirit of the old Tuono with the new Aprilia feeling.”

2011 KTM RC8R Gets Smoother And Slicker

K

TM is giving the RC8R its first significant update for 2011, with engine, suspension and cosmetic tweaks. The changes are intended to make the RC8R more competitive against revamped opposition such as the 1198S – making it a more attractive proposition to new buyers, rather than a must-have new model for owners of the old bike. The key change is a new crankshaft and flywheel – the change in mass is claimed to give smoother running than the first incarnation of the 1199 cc 75 degree V-twin, which was criticised for its lumpy, rough-edged power delivery. New cylinder heads use two spark plugs per cylinder, and contribute to the claimed 5 bhp increase in peak power, which now stands

something too extreme, they want something they can use daily, and with this bike hopefully they can.” Designer Valerio Aiello said that his main concern was striking the right balance between performance and practicality: “We wanted to make a bike with a sporty image of course, but it had to be comfortable, could take pillions, go on weekends trips, be used day to day, and could also be entry level and easy to use.” “I think we’ve achieved that, but we hope the customer thinks so too!”

The chassis is essentially the same – the tubular steel chassis with fully-adjustable WP suspension front and rear uses the same hardware. The internal settings are revised, with a claimed improvement in ride quality on the road. The rear shock is now on an adjustable eccentric mount for ride-height adjustment to give different geometry on track. New colours mark out the new bike – white/ orange or black/orange bodywork, both with orange frame and wheels. The styling is unchanged.

The Triumph Trophy Is Back

T

triple and 1200 four guises, and including one significant facelift in 1995, went onto to become one of the longest lived of the original Hinckley machines (only finally going out of production in 2003) and a vital steady seller.

When Triumph relaunched 20 years ago its first bike wasn’t a Daytona or a Tiger or even a Trident (although two of those three were to follow shortly after) – it was with the 1200 Trophy.

Back then the Trophy certainly wasn’t cutting edge. But its solid, durable engineering, credible performance and contemporary (if conservative) style and spec were revolutionary enough at a time when British motorcycles were either jokes or classics or both.

he Triumph Trophy is back and better than ever. With Triumph’s recent success dominated by Speed and Street Triples and big tourers being absent from its range since 2003, it’s easy to forget how significant the Trophy is to the Hinckley marque.

In fact the word ‘significant’ doesn’t say the half of it. The 1200 Trophy did just that – and more in fact. Over the subsequent, formative Hinckley years, the big tourer, both in 900

2011 Japanese Line-up

The Way Of The Samurai...

2010 was a monstrous year in the world of motorcycles, but just when you thought the highways and byways where safe once again, you’re in for a rude awakening as 2011 promises even more‌

L

et’s take a look at what 2011 has in store for us as numerous leading Japanese manufacturers are presenting us with some totally new models.

First up on our wish list is the superbike surrounded by the most hype of them all, the Ninja ZX-10R, new-from-the-ground-up for 2011. It’s the meanest and most talented Ninja yet, offering the most advanced traction-control system in all of production motorcycling. Because of the electronic throttle actuation, an advanced Power Mode system allows riders to choose the amount of power and the character of delivery available from the engine, which is pretty handy considering how bad some of our roads are. At the heart of the 10R is an all new 998 cc, 16 valve, DOHC, liquid cooled inline four, easily the most advanced engine from Kawasaki. Emphasis was placed on linear power delivery, to accomplish that; peak torque was moved to a higher rpm range, which allows racers and track-day riders to open the throttle earlier and with more confidence. Of course, the second half of the handling equation lies in an all-new aluminium twinspar frame of just seven pieces that features optimized flex characteristics for ideal rider feedback, cornering performance and lighter weight.

58

ISSUE 67

A first for the 10R, a 43 mm open-class version of the Big Piston Fork (BPF) found on last year’s Ninja ZX-6R makes its way here. Out back is a horizontal back-link suspension design that positions the shock and linkage above the swingarm. Full adjustability, including low- and high-speed compression damping, is still available. Information is displayed on a speedometer straight out of MotoGP and SBK. Revs are indicated via a very neat and awe inspiring LED instrumentation, ensuring you always know what revs you’re at with a simple glance. For track use, the LCD display can be set to “race” mode which moves the gear display to the centre of the screen. Surprisingly, this sportbike is one you can actually take on a long ride in relative comfort. And because its 10 kilograms lighter than last year’s bike, the new ZX-10R will be quicker and more nimble in any environment you choose to ride it in. Looking at this beautiful but aggressive looking beast, you might be thinking, what the hell was Kawasaki up to for the last couple of years? As this technological marvel holds true to Kawasaki’s racing origin. The first Kawasaki ZX-10R was the closest thing to a race-bike that money could buy in 2004, and the brutally quick litre-class superbike rewarded its designers by winning the prestigious international Masterbike Shootout for two years in a row in ’04 and ‘05. It was also voted Bike of the Year and Superbike of the Year by a host of specialist motor-

cycle publications and earned a loyal following amongst hard-riding motorcyclists worldwide. The second-generation Kawasaki ZX-10R carries nothing forward from the old except the name and the pedigree. Along with its all-new frame, wheels, suspension and engine, the latest ZX-10R now also offers cutting-edge race-type traction control and ABS brakes. The race-style cassette transmission of the 2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R offers revised primary and final reduction ratios to minimise rear end squatting and lifting in response to throttle input, and the top three gears now enjoy closer ratios to enhance racetrack performance. With the revised engine layout the cassette is now located high enough to be accessed without allowing the engine oil to leak out. The list of other changes is seemingly endless. The all-cast frame is made from fewer sections and is lighter. The seat height is lower by 17mm and the rider’s footpegs are adjustable for track or street use. The front and rear three-spoke wheels are 330 grams and 490 grams lighter respectively, and the new instrumentation now features self-adjusting LED brightness, a shift indicator, and a

60

ISSUE 67

Race Mode display for when you get down to business at the racetrack. At such times you’ll appreciate the quickly detachable indicator lights, taillight and mirrors, as well as the adjustable footpegs that can be raised for track use and lowered for comfort around town. The motorcycle also now offers three Power Modes – Full, Middle and Low – that allow the rider to select a power delivery style compatible with his preference and track conditions. All of these features make the 2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R Ninja a very special motorcycle. The factory went considerably further, though, in making sure that its blinding performance is matched by state-of-the-art electronic aids to make it all safely available to a much wider spectrum of riders who enjoy riding their motorcycles around racetracks. First comes the new KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System) that uses input from various sources to stop not only wheel slippage under braking, but to limit rear wheel lift and kickback. This is the world’s first mass-production motorcycle ABS system that monitors wheel speed and front calliper hydraulic pressure, as well as

information from the ECU, including throttle position, engine speed, clutch actuation and gear position. By monitoring back-torque the system recognises rear wheel slip due to engine braking and doesn’t trigger the ABS, allowing the rider to maintain full control of the rear brake on the racetrack. That takes care of the shop while the clamps are on. What about wheel slippage under acceleration? With 200 horsepower on tap wheelspin could be a real problem and highside crashes a far too regular occurrence. The new Kawasaki comes standard with S-KTRC (Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control) that helps skilled riders experience the thrill of riding a devastatingly quick two-wheeler right at the limits of adhesion. This system, based on MotoGP racing technology, is altogether different from the anti-skid KTRC system used on the Kawasaki 1400 GTR ABS that was designed to offer the rider reassurance on slippery surfaces. The Ninja’s S-KTRC was purpose-built to retain forward drive and allow riding on the very limit of traction by constantly measuring slippage, allowing a certain amount to occur, and then intervening when it senses that things are about

to get ugly. Some of the more talented hooligans out there will be very pleased to hear that, unlike all the other traction control systems on offer, the Kawasaki system can distinguish between smooth, well controlled torque wheelies, and abrupt uncontrolled front wheel elevation caused by ham-handed use of the throttle and clutch. In such cases, Nanny Green steps in and gets things back under control, but well controlled wheelies that don’t get the sensors all aquiver with fright are left alone. The 2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R Ninja is Simply the Best, as Tina Turner would have said. It is an improvement in every possible way on the bike it replaces, offering an unsurpassed mix of brutal power, lightweight handling and modern electronic traction control in a package that’s sure to prove simply irresistible to the redblooded superbike rider. It’ll arrive at your local dealer early in January, with a 24 month unlimited-distance warranty. The price is yet to be announced. But while we’re checking out some hot superbikes hitting our streets next year, there’s no way we can leave out the all-new 2011 Suzuki GSX-R600 and GSX-R750, sure to keep diehard Suzuki fans happy and maybe even make one out of you. It wasn’t by accident that the original GSXR750 redefined the high-performance Supersport and shocked the motorcycle world when it was introduced in 1985.

It was a product of integrated design, a talented group of Suzuki chassis, engine and electrical engineers making history by working together to build a more compact and lighter 750 cc Supersport. With an unmatched combination of excellent throttle response, linear power delivery, strong braking, confident handling and class-leading power-to-weight ratio, it was the closest a mass-production four-stroke; four-cylinder streetbike had ever come to being a racebike with lights. The original GSX-R set a design theme Suzuki engineers have followed with success ever since: Make the GSX-R respond to the rider and do what the rider wants, when the rider wants, how the rider wants. Concentrate on overall performance, not simple fashion. Take what is learned in professional racing, and apply it to production models in a continuous loop of engineering improvement. In the decades since then, the GSX-R750 has consistently outperformed anything else in its class, proving the slogan, Own the Racetrack. Would-be competitors finally gave up racing against the GSX-R750, and then stopped building 750 cc Supersports altogether. And while the GSX-R750 was proving that it truly was in a class of its own year after year, the serious engineering work continued, improving and expanding the GSX-R line with the introduction of the GSX-R600.

There are still experienced riders who appreciate a state of the art 750cc engine combined with the compact size of a 600 cc Supersport. For those riders, the GSX-R750 delivers unmatched excitement on the street and on the racetrack, during track days and in club races alike. But there are also knowledgeable riders who prefer a true 600cc Supersport, eligible for 600cc classes on the racetrack. For those riders, there is the GSX-R600. Which brings us to the newest GSX-R750 and the newest GSX-R600, two outstanding Supersports developed in parallel by the same team of Suzuki engineers. Sharing race-proven advanced engine technology, with broader power delivery, improved throttle response, lower emissions and about 10 percent better fuel consumption as measured by Suzuki engineers using the standardized Worldwide Motorcycle Test Cycle. Built on a more compact, 15 mm shorter wheelbase with race-developed chassis geometry, suspension and brakes, with simplified and lighter aerodynamic bodywork. Both delivering a breathtaking combination of outstanding engine performance, nimble handling, compact size and light weight. The newest GSX-R750 is over 7.7 kilograms lighter, with a curb mass of 190 kilograms. And the newest GSX-R600 is almost 9 kilograms lighter (a staggering weight savings over the previous model)

ISSUE 67

and has a curb weight of 186 kilograms, giving it the class-leading power-to-weight ratio for production 600cc four-cylinder Supersports. For some riders, the GSX-R750 is the best choice. For other riders, the GSX-R600—The Top Performer in its class—is the best choice. Both are built and proven to own the Racetrack. But if you’re looking for something for those long cross country trips, you need to direct your attention to the newest addition to the Kawasaki family, the Vulcan 1700 Vaquero. The Spanish word vaquero means “cowboy.” Well, if that cowboy happened to be independent, adventurous and sported handmade boots and a custom hat, he’d probably ride a 2011 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Vaquero. It starts with the beautiful Ebony or Candy Fire Red paint on the abbreviated fairing, sculpted tank and curvaceous bodywork. Luxurious chrome accents provide a beautiful counterpoint to the glossy paintwork. The Vaquero’s 1 700 cc, SOHC, liquid-cooled V-twin, boasts the very latest in engine technology yet looks like a throwback to the past, all the while delivering 146 Nm of torque. The Vaquero’s advanced electronic fuel injection optimizes engine response without detracting from its distinctive V-twin throb. A water-cooled alternator produces a staggering 46.8 amps, plenty to power a selection of electronic accessories to enrich motorcycle travel. The Vaquero offers true touring-bike convenience in the form of its electronic cruise control system, conveniently operated from the right handlebar and usable at any speed between 50 and 140 km/h in any of the top four gears.

62

ISSUE 67

Additional touring acumen shines through the engine’s six-speed transmission with overdriven 5th and 6th gears, which contributes to a relaxed ride and excellent fuel economy at highway speeds. And that chopped, customlook fairing? Although lower than a traditional windshield or full fairing, it still cuts a decent sized hole in oncoming atmosphere, giving the rider a useful still-air cocoon in which to enjoy the ride and all the convinces the Vaquero has to offer. Lockable side loading hard bags set the Vaquero apart from its Vulcan 1700 brethren. They’re beautifully integrated and spacious, and styled

to highlight the bike’s long, low look. A scooped saddle offers a comfortable rider perch, while a minimalist passenger pad sits atop a wildly shaped rear fender that integrates equally stylish taillight and turn signal assemblies. It all adds up to a truly top-of-the-line bagger that encompasses a perfect combination of traits, making it the perfect tool in any touring rider’s arsenal and gives you the perfect reason to take the long way home.

BMW Concept C

The Scooter Of The Future Recent years have seen radical changes in the world of individual mobility, specifically in the conurbations, and the number of registrations has rocketed for virtually all individual transport concepts. However, the space available to traffic has not grown to the same extent, so individual mobility must come to terms with the new circumstances.

A

gainst this background, BMW Motorrad will be expanding its present motorcycle adventure world to include the big scooter. This new product segment will first give rise to two innovative premium scooters with internal combustion engines. The differing characteristics of this concept will appeal to a broad target group. In addition, some thought is being given to a future alternative drive with electric motor. BMW Motorrad will be combining in these scooters the outstanding handling of the motorcycle with the particular agility and conceptual comfort of the scooter for the maximum experience of dynamic riding – a big scooter made by BMW Motorrad. There are plans to manufacture these future production vehicles at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin.

64

ISSUE 67

BMW Motorrad is continuing its strategy of strong and sustainable growth and so will be intensifying its traditional work in the enduro, touring, and sport touring fields. Following its successful entry to the super sport segment, BMW Motorrad will now be expanding its range yet again to include a highly promising business line. This path leads straight to the big scooter segment. These high displacement vehicles with dynamic handling characteristics have gained considerable popularity all over the world. Moreover, they present an interesting alternative to returnees who up to now were undecided about motorcycles after long periods of abstinence. New ideas and concepts on the subject of two-wheeled mobility are a decades old tradition at BMW Motorrad. Countless times, concept studies and drafts have

been presented that reflect the power of innovation and future orientation of BMW Motorrad. With its Concept C study, BMW Motorrad is yet again embarking on a new path and demonstrating a fascinating mobility option for the future. Here, C stands for “commuter”. Particularly in view of the traffic development in urban areas, it presents the prospect of an innovative, sporty big scooter for the future premium segment. As usual at BMW Motorrad, there is more to this study than just an attempt to present a big scooter for the highest demands. Rather, the designers and engineers of BMW Motorrad focused above all on the emotive component in addition to the technical function and quality – and the thrill from the very first moment on. When unveiling its Concept C at EICMA in Milan, BMW Motorrad will be directing the maximum possible emotion to its interpreta-

tion of this subject, which will bear witness to the primary claims of maximum, all round functionality. Concept C as a vision of the big scooter is immediately recognisable as a member of the BMW Motorrad family. For instance, it also presents the so-called “split face”, a visual tripartite of dynamic response extending from the front silhouette to the front wheel cover and beyond. In the style of highly sporty BMW Motorrad models, such as the S 1000 RR, Concept C also features a twin-tipped front spoiler. Unlike the L shaped side view presented up to now by big scooters, with their predominantly vertical body lines and colour scheme, Concept C has ventured on a new, much more sporty and dynamic path. The body lines sweeping up to the vehicle’s rear underscore this big scooter’s active riding character. The high rear section emphasises the lightness and agility of Concept C’s powerful two-cylinder engine. Sportiness and dynamism are also underscored by the close cut, speeder-style windscreen. The functional side of this scooter is expressed in stylish design elements, such as the aluminium look of the bash plates with the air intake adopted from the BMW GS. The black chromium of the suspension and frame parts

form a thrilling, dynamic relationship with the aluminium chromium, silver, and blue paintwork of the body parts. In addition, the black satin sections present a high-contrast emphasis on the vehicle’s central area. This highly technical and high-quality elegance is borne further by finely worked details, such as the fuel tank cover reminiscent of aircraft and the short, sporty muffler. The visionary facet of Concept C is presented by the tyres with flanks and treads of blue. Concept C presents unusual and innovative solutions that offer a wide prospect of what in future can become reality in this segment. For instance, Concept C features a highly complex monolever mechanism with hollowed-out shaft connected to a suspension strut visible from the outside. In this study, front-wheel control takes the form of an upside down fork.

CVT transmission). Engine power, torque, and therefore performance will be moving towards the top of the segment. Light is cast on a more distant point in the future by the LED headlamp integrated into the face panelling. This future vision is also continued by the deliberate absence of conventional rear view mirrors, which will be replaced in Concept C with two video cameras in the rear. These record the area behind the vehicle and transfer the images to two LCD monitors in the cockpit within view of the rider. The road speed, engine speed, and other data appear on a third LCD display integrated at the centre of the cockpit.

The End

The stable twin disc brake at the front features two radial brake callipers that also underscore the dynamic sportiness of Concept C. In addition, the single disc brake at the rear and the BMW Motorrad ABS provide the maximum possible safety during braking manoeuvres. The dynamic and equally comfortable driving force behind Concept C is provided by a new, two-cylinder inline engine in conjunction with

2011 Euro Line-Up

Euro Flavour Taking on the Japanese is no easy feat, let’s take a look at some European manufacturers that have proven they’re capable of running with the big boys, well not even running, but out running in some respects.

T

hey might not be as influential and as well funded, but they have proven, on a world stage like SBK, they know what they are doing. 2011 promises to be yet another strong year as two of the most popular out of the bunch are launching totally new and rebuilt motorbikes. Let’s take a look at one of the strongest European manufactures Triumph, and see what they have been up to. Firstly there’s a legend in the making, a bike that might be much sought after in the coming years, I’m talking about the new Triumph Speedmaster of course. Bad boy good looks, slash cut pipes, engine cases in black for real attitude, this is what it’s all about, looking good and riding hard. This bike pays tribute to a lost generation of tattoos, leather and bad attitudes. When riding was still riding and there was nothing between you and the open road. This hardcore package sits on black cast wheels with machined detail. Making it stand out and establish it as not just another cruiser. Air-cooled 865cc parallel-twin, 270 degree crank engine promises unbelievable riding pleasure. Unique ‘hot rod’ style is the very essence of this low-slung, old-school cruiser re-invented

for the demands of today’s rider. New for 2011, short guards, big wheels and a totally new feel. Ready to roll if you’re ready to rock. Next up is another addition to the Triumph family, the Speed Triple. It offers real world performance for riders who know what they want. It’s the definitive streetfighter, the benchmark, the best, in a word - Legend. New for 2011, Triumph has taken all that’s good about the Speed Triple and created an all new model. A new chapter in the legacy. Allnew chassis is the sharpest tool in the box. And that 1050 cc triple. Oh yes, the engine. And the look? Short, stubby and aggressive. It has twin headlights, a single sided swingarm and alloy bars. It’s a pure Speed Triple - improved. The best selling motorcycle of the new era of Triumph needed an update, and it received a very successful one. The 2011 Speed Triple is more modern, refined and a much better motorcycle, overall. 16 years ago the Triumph Speed Triple emerged from Hinckley, and has been the most charismatic bike, and the best seller of the reborn Triumph, captained by John Bloor. With three changes of displacement to date (855, 955 and 1050 cc), the look of the bike has not changed

too much over the years . . . until now. The big naked from Hinckley is known for its great personality, particularly the double headlights that emerged several years ago, and of course, being propelled by the muscular, three-cylinder engine that is the house brand. But now it is time for a fresh interpretation of this classic. In terms of looks, the two round headlights that were the signature of the speed triple in the past are replaced in favour of the more modern, asymmetric units that will undoubtedly disappoint some of the faithful. We also get a new look to the gas tank, which is black at the front (holding the battery in its new location) and new radiator side covers. The back of the bike has a fresh look, and the tail light is an LED. The mufflers exit up high in the back, but are now oval in profile and 1.3 kilograms lighter. Triumph is also offering a set of arrow mufflers for an additional 3 hp and even less weight. Finally, a single muffler that exits down low is available, and provides a 6.8 kilogram weight reduction. The new chassis is more compact and narrower, resembling the smaller displacement Street Tri-

ple and Daytona. The slim profile helps you get your feet on the ground easier, and the riding position is slightly more upright and relaxed. Steering geometry is changed somewhat, and the single-sided swingarm is now 18.5 mm longer, providing increased stability and traction. Moving weight to the front tire patch, Triumph relocated the battery from under the seat to in front of the tank. Although the displacement has not changed, Triumph thoroughly revised the engine, and relocated it in the chassis. The result is further weight over the front, and an increase in peak power of 5 hp. More torque is available over a broader range, and the engine pulls harder earlier. The weight of the 2011 Speed Triple is down by roughly 3 kilograms. A contributor is lighter wheels, but earlier speculation and rumour had many enthusiasts expecting a much bigger weight drop. The first thing previous Speed Triple owners may notice is the improved rider ergonomics. The narrower profile doesn’t spread your legs so much, and the closer handlebars allow you to assume a more relaxed position on the machine. This is clearly an entirely new feeling aboard the big triple, and a welcome one.

creased tire size (from 180 to 190). The speed Triple has an improved spread of torque, making it short-shift friendly and easy to pull out of a corner in a higher gear. But to really appreciate this well crafted machine you need to take to the streets. Here, the new bike really shines and reminds us of its little brother, the Street Triple, but this big brother has a lot more torque and effortless acceleration. The handling is nearly perfect, agile but stable and with good feedback. The brakes are plenty powerful, but not brutal. For the street, the brakes are just about perfect, and the lack of strong initial bite can be an asset on rough textured roads and unexpected surfaces, found all over South Africa. The old Speed Triple is a legend in its own regard, It is a bike filled with character, but the new one is much better. Improved in virtually every respect, and new look is very modern an eye-catching. The price shouldn’t change much, but buyers will get a more refined and rideable package, with all the fun and excitement of the old model. Next we take a look at a European manufacturer that’s in a league of its own, one of the big boys, Ducati.

The new handling characteristics helps place the bike on its intended path and gives the rider more confidence and it’s quick to change direction thanks to improved weight distribution and reduced overall weight.

And they made something totally new and revolutionary, simply known as the Ducati Diavel, and it’s about to make you wish you had one, no really. The Diavel’s slogan says it all “You can avoid eyes, but not admiration”

The Speed Triple may not take to the track quite as adeptly as Ducati’s Streetfighter with its superbike motor, but the bike is fast and has a friendlier nature that will really shine on the street.

The Diavel project was born when Ducati designers applied their wish-list of bike “basic instincts” to a blank canvas.

The improved traction in the rear comes not only from the longer swingarm, but from the in-

over a pure-bred competition motor had to be met with determination and a delicate touch, and the result is a frontal area that looks like a power athlete on the starting blocks,” explains the team at Ducati Design responsible for the project. “With the front wheel kept close to the Diavel’s body and using the short tail of a sport bike, we were able to blend this muscular design with a chassis that matched.” The stance of the Diavel is that of readiness, dominance, and confidence bordering on superiority. With lateral radiators adding muscle to its broad “shoulders,” which then taper down across the engine and into the belly-fairing with oil cooler, the athlete took shape. A massive 240 section rear tyre was a perfect example of how Diavel designers used a nocompromise attitude when applying their wish list of features. Ducati’s philosophy for innovation has always been to push the boundaries of design in the name of exciting motorcycles. “ The Diavel is a true Ducati, born from a passion for motorcycling and designed to deliver authentic Ducati performance in every respect. The Diavel has very recently been launched in South Africa and you might be happy to know that South Africa is the first country, besides Italy, to showcase this beautiful beast so soon. So be ready for an epiphany as the Diavel is set to hit our streets sooner than you might have thought.

Harley-Davidson Blackline

Less is More... Lean as wire, hard as iron and dark as a tar road at midnight, the new Blackline motorcycle is a Harley-Davidson Softail model pared to the bone. A rebellious creation of the Custom movement, the Blackline celebrates three fundamental elements of motorcycling: mechanical beauty, internal combustion, and the long black line of the road ahead.

T

he Blackline balances allegiance with rebellion, discarding previous conventions of colour and chrome for a Custom look that’s honest, functional and attainable. Visual elements of the original bobber movement are combined with the raw, hand-hewn style embraced by today’s young custom builders. The Blackline throws new fuel on a fire that burns across generations, an unquenchable desire to ride.

The compact headlight and speedometer are tucked low into the wide, FX front end, and there’s just enough shine to make the black parts look blacker. Black rimmed laced wheels complete a look that’s tough, tempered and undeniably Harley-Davidson. Kawasaki Z1000SX

What About Both? Kawasaki’s very popular Z1000 has gained a fully clothed sibling that fills the gap between the naked hooligan bike and the track-focused ZX-10R superbike just perfectly.

S

upersport seduction with everyday versatility. That’s the concept of the new Z1000SX. The bike offers street riding excitement wrapped in seductive fullfairing styling that embodies its sporty performance. Add a number of convenience features and the result is a unique package more than able to satisfy a rider’s every desire. So just what kind of person is likely to lust after the new Kawasaki Z1000SX? The short answer is anybody who appreciates powerful motorcycles that are equally at home covering long distances on the road as they are on the racetrack. Superbike riders who want to enjoy greater comfort without sacrificing too much of the performance they’re used to will find that the new Kawasaki fits the bill perfectly, while those who want the ability to circulate briskly on the occasional track day are likely to look long and hard at the new Kawasaki. Based upon the very popular naked Z1000, the Z1000SX fills the gap between that machine and the racetrack focused ZX-10R superbike perfectly. Which, let’s face it, may not be the perfect motorbike for everyone out there, this is where this beauty steps in, offering the best of both worlds. The Z1000SX uses the brawny liquid-cooled 16 valve 1 043 cc four-cylinder engine as the Z1000, but with taller gearing to take advantage of the streamlined fairing of the new model that increases both top speed and rider comfort levels at speed. Power output at 135 Hp is the same as the Zed, with both models reaching peak output at 9 600 rpm. Maximum torque of 110 Nm at 7 800 rpm is also identical, but just about everything else on the new bike is differ-

ent. The aluminium frame is longer, narrower and taller than that of the Z1000, adding highspeed stability, while the engine is now rubbermounted at the rear. The fuel tank has grown from 15 to 19 litres, but the midsection of the new aluminium frame dispenses with the need for side covers and is narrower than that of the naked bike, offering riders a shorter reach to the ground. Kawasaki’s engineers have paid close attention to mass centralisation in their latest designs, and the Z1000SX is no exception. The new bike uses Horizontal Back Link rear suspension that positions the rear shock absorber and its linkage above the swing-arm. Much like that of the 2011 ZX-10R. This adds the benefit of holding the shock far enough from the exhaust pipe that it is unaffected by the heat, as well as leaving room below for a larger exhaust pre-chamber, which in turn allows the silencer to be shorter and tidier. The back shock features rebound and preload adjustability, while the inverted 41 mm front forks offer stepless compression and rebound damping along with spring preload adjustability. Braking is taken care of by 300 mm petal discs gripped by opposed four piston radial mount calipers in cahoots with a radial pump master cylinder up front. The rear stoppers consist of a single piston caliper gripping a 250 mm petal disc, and an ABS version will also be available. Unsprung weight is kept low thanks to the use of lightweight six-spoke alloy wheels. Only the ABS version will be imported to SA. The Kawasaki Z1000SX is obviously going to be frequently used over long distances, so the designers went to great lengths to build in comfort features that were not really neces-

sary for its street-fighting city-boy sibling, the Z1000 or the ZX-10R superbike. The riding position is similar to that of the Z1000, but with the handgrips moved about 10 mm inward, and the thick urethane seat covers aid and abet the dampers fitted underneath the seat to reduce felt vibration. The front footpegs are rubber mounted, and the foot guards have rubber-mounted weights attached to keep things smooth. Best of all, the windscreen height is speedily adjustable over three positions spanning 500 mm. There’s many a superbike owner out there who’d give his teeth for such a feature. So there you have it – Kawasaki’s new arrival that can be used to go cruising with the missus over the weekend, then spirited off to Kyalami for an afternoon’s fun on Wednesday while the boss is playing golf. The Kawasaki Z1000SX arrives in South Africa early this year. Pricing to be announced shortly. It includes a two-year unlimited distance warranty. Ride it just once and you’ll be hooked!

Burchmore’s

MOOD AMONGST USED CAR BUYERS IS UPBEAT!

Used car buyers are considerably more boyish, now that interest rates have been cut yet again. “They are considerably more positive.

W

e are seeing a lot more floor traffic; there are more registered buyers at our auctions. The interest rate cut may have been relatively small… but it is having a substantial impact on the used car market,” says Darryl Jacobson, managing director of Burchmore’s. The SA Reserve Bank recently cut the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5%, and the banks announced that their prime rate would fall to 9%. The interest rate is now the lowest in South Africa in 30 years. According to Jacobson, there was some hesitation amongst buyers prior to the repo rate cut. “The market certainly was not depressed, but buyers were far from optimistic. With the latest reduction in interest rate – albeit small – we are seeing improved demand. The outlook is considerably more positive,” he notes. In fact, some buyers are so upbeat that they are “buying up”. “Prior to the interest rate cut, our customers were predominantly interested in value for money and securing the most bang for their buck. That is definitely still the case today – that is why they shop at Burchmore’s; they want to buy at wholesale prices. But we are noticing that customers are willing to spend a little bit

78

ISSUE 67

more; they are definitely buying up. The general sentiment is a whole lot more positive,” Jacobson says. Given the reduction in interest rates, Jacobson advises buyers to fix interest rates if they are financing the purchase of their used cars. “I don’t claim to be a financial expert but, when rates are low, it makes sense to fix the rate. The banks are willing to fix at 1.5% above prime if

you are a good customer,” he reveals. “This is exceptionally good news for used car buyers. We have good stock levels – meaning that car buyers are afforded a good selection of quality used cars, many of which have full service histories. And, with the access to affordable finance, it is good news on all fronts!” he concludes.

Toyota Invests

Toyota Announces Major Investment Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) announced a R363 million investment into a new Parts Distribution Warehouse in the Ekurhuleni municipality. The warehouse is being developed in two phases and will serve TSAM’s local and export markets.

T

he new warehouse represents the largest single investment by TSAM in the Gauteng Province and it follows a five year R8 billion investment programme into its manufacturing facilities in Prospecton, Durban. Upon completion the new facility will cover 80 000 m2 and it will be the largest of its kind in Africa. “The development of a distribution warehouse of this size and scale is one of the clearest signs that we are committed to South Africa and intent on remaining South Africa’s most popular vehicle manufacturer,” says Dr. Johan van Zyl, president and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors and Managing Officer of Toyota Motor Corporation. According to Van Zyl the new Parts Distribution Warehouse will allow the company to further improve the availability of service and replacement parts on all of its vehicles, while the efficiencies gained from its world class management systems will serve to contain the cost of these parts. The new Parts Distribution Warehouse will boast state-of-the-art management and workflow systems that will ensure optimal man and machine separation. By utilising these technologies the new facility will become one of the

80

ISSUE 67

most modern facilities in the global TMC network. The first phase of the new Parts Distribution Warehouse will open in May 2012 with the first round of daily deliveries to the more than 220 Toyota, Lexus and Hino dealerships in Southern Africa. This phase will feature 39 000 m2 of warehouse space and 3 000 m2 of office space. More than 800 of TSAM’s staff compliment of 7 793 employees will be based here. The second phase will include a further 38 000 m2 of warehouse

space and is scheduled for completion by or before 2015. “Toyota South Africa will remain an integral member of Toyota Motor Corporation and will continue to produce vehicles in South Africa. In making this a reality we believe that the government, through the actions of the Department of Trade and Industry and the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP) has created a stable and predictable environment in which we as manufacturers can make investments such as the one that we are announcing today” says Van Zyl.
