Colour Formation The physical conditions necessary to colour a diamond occur very rarely. Forged from carbon atoms deep within the earth, Natural Fancy Coloured Diamonds acquire their many hues from additional trace elements or plastic distortions to the typical diamond structure.
Carats’s Natural Fancy Coloured Diamonds are completely naturally formed. Geological quirks, billions of years ago, altered the diamond’s brilliant crystalline lattice and transformed it into a true Natural Fancy Coloured Diamond wonder. Many ‘Colourless’ or ‘Transparent’ diamonds possess very subtle hints of Yellow or Brown and are still classified within the D-to-Z colour scale reserved for this category of jewels. But when the colour is strong enough, or of a different
hue, the diamond becomes known as a ‘Natural Fancy Colour Diamond’, which exists as a special class of its own. There are 12 different main Fancy Colours and many shades in between. Hue and Saturation All Natural Fancy Coloured Diamonds are graded by their saturation, hue and tone. This special classification system is used to describe the complex characteristics of these rare jewels.
Saturation means the strength or intensity of the colour; Hue indicates the dominant colour of the stone; and Tone describes how much lightness or darkness the stone retains. Most Natural Fancy Coloured Diamonds possess combinations of different hues and shades. Secondary hues are known as ‘overtones’ or ‘modifiers’.
