Not a Lot of People Know That One early Rolls-Royce chauffeur used to drive his car through a pond to cool the brakes at the end of a long descent. This habit had stayed with him from his previous job driving a coach and four! In the 1920s and 1930s most Rolls-Royce motor cars were road-tested in France because the roads were faster in France and the French policemen more ‘co-operative’. One of Rolls-Royces’s few wholly unsuccessful ideas was a1905 model with the stylish name of The Legalimit. Although it had a V8 3.5 litre engine, it was designed to be incapable of exceeding the legal speed limit of 20 m.p.h. Only one was ever sold - to Sir Alfred Harmsworth, the press Baron. When Rolls-Royce cars were first exported to America, they were so quiet that the licensing authorities refused to believe they were petrol-driven cars, thinking they must be electrically powered.

The Chairman’s Bit Autumn is upon us. Looking out of my study window the trees are just beginning to turn a stunning golden yellow and red thank goodness winter is not yet here ……….. There is still time to book for Athe GM and Christmas lunch on Sunday 4th December so do please reserve your places if you have not already done so. Your committee are well into 2017 mode with a considerable amount of planning now underway, and some of that detail you will find in this PP. Coming up with new ideas is a challenge and I am always making a plea for section members to help us with ideas for events or even managing an event. So come on guys, give us a hand!
Derek Freeman - Chairman
We would also like articles and interesting facts about your cars to include in the PP, another challenge to create an informative and interesting magazine four times a year. Help Barry out. We are one of the few sections that does not charge for its newsletter and we do need advertising to offset some of the costs. If you know of anyone who would be interested in advertising please contact Barry. We have had a busy August and September. Classics on the Green at Croxley is a continual favourite, it has grown year on year and did not disappoint this August. We arranged an invitation to the Bentley Drivers Club 80th Anniversary at Silverstone with access to the Brooklands suite which was a great vantage point to watch some spectacular racing. Being able to walk around the paddocks just added to the day. The summer picnic was well attended at Champneys, a superb location, it rained, a bit, but the sun did come out. A number of us attended the continental rally in Normandy staying in an hotel overlooking the Normandy beaches. It is of course apple country so there was the odd sip of cider and calvados. We all had a great time, even Ray Hillier who spent too long with his head inside the bonnets of some less well cars. This event was attended by over 50 cars from the UK, Europe and Scandinavia plus one couple in their Silver Dawn from Australia. The section helped the SHRMF with their open weekend at the Hunt House in September offering rides in their cars to visitors. We sometimes forget what a great facility the Hunt House is and it should become more accessible to Club and SHRMF members. There is lots more about past events and the new calendar for 2017 inside this PP. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in the next couple of months. Get those cars out whilst the weather is still kind and book early to avoid disappointment.

Paris House Lunch Woburn - Sunday 12th February 2017 The only Michelin starred restaurant in Bedfordshire. Celebrate Valentine’s day on Sunday 12th February 2017 with a memorable 5 course lunch in this wonderful location. Set in 22 acres of stunning parkland Paris House is located on the Duke of Bedford’s Estate in Woburn. Paris House blends modern culinary techniques with traditional foods. Paris House was originally built in 1878 in Paris. In January 2014 Paris House was bought by the business’s award winning Executive Chef Phil Fanning. The restaurant is managed as a family business by Fanning and his wife Claire, backed by father-in-law and businessman Nik Millard. The restaurant’s tasting menus are based around dishes constructed with natural flavour combinations using the best seasonal produce available. Each menu has been carefully created to showcase the ingredients and provide you with a memorable dining experience. This is a very special day. The cost is £100 per person and in order for us to have exclusive use of the restaurant we will require the total amount payable by First Week in December. This is a unique opportunity to spend time with experts in the field of leather. The day commences with a short presentation of the work of the Leather Conservation Centre followed by a talk on the history of leather, different types of leather, and tanning and finishes as related to automobile leather. For the rest of the day, participants will study with practical work: Cleaning options for leather with examples and test pieces Repair options for leather with examples and test pieces Although you won’t be able to actually work on your own car at the centre, if you have any particular concerns, please bring it with you as there will be an opportunity at the end of the afternoon to discuss the options for your upholstery. It will be very useful if you are able to bring along an old piece of leather to use as test pieces for the practical work. The cost per person is £85.00 which will include refreshments during the day and a light lunch. Organiser: Kathy Martin Email: kathryn.martin@rrecpaulerspury.org.uk

Long Distance Driving Day - Wednesday 5th April 2017 In response to several requests from section members for an event with greater emphasis on driving content, a long distance driving day has been arranged for Wednesday 5th April 2017. True to our section name, we will meet at the Hunt House in Paulerspury at 10.30 a.m. for tea and coffee, prior to leaving around 11.15 a.m. for a drive of around 120 miles through Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, on to Warwickshire and back into Northamptonshire, arriving back at the Hunt House around 4.15 p.m. A lunch break of around an hour and a half is planned at half distance, where food and drinks are available (at your own cost). The route comprises mostly old fashioned A and B roads, virtually no dual carriageways, and certainly no motorways. Due to legal constraints, we will not travel in convoy, and you are free to follow the planned route at your leisure with no pressure to travel at a set speed – and therefore is ideally suited to cars of all ages. A detailed guide to the route will be provided on the day. There is no cost for this event, but we would welcome a donation of £10 per car which will be used to supplement the section funds. Summer Picnic at Champneys - Sunday 21st August Rolls-Royce and Bentleys - The perfect combination The very name Champneys coupled with the illustrious iconic names of Rolls Royce and Bentley, all, beyond doubt, synonymous with luxury, elegance and style (and as the song says, “you’ve gotta have ‘style’” and all in the very best in taste. Choosing this venue was truly inspirational of Steve and Janet Dolan which complemented the surroundings making our motor carriages look truly at home. We all seek an excuse to drive our beloved cars and what better excuse than this backdrop of elegance. Seriously though, it really was a great location, easy to find, ample parking and of course the bonhomie of the all who made the effort. Arriving at Champneys is in itself impressive and swinging into the drive after being directed by Janet herself to join the others for the photo call outside the house. House, is not quite the description, sophisticated residence is more fitting for a dwelling originally built in French 2nd Empire style and occupied by such famous persons as the infamous Thomas Cranmer former Archbishop of Canterbury and lately Lady Rothschild. Ah, what blend of elegance?

We then adjourned to park on the lawn in orderly fashion only to be caught in a shower which brought on groans and umbrellas. Fortunately, not for long as the sun favoured the brave and within minutes out came the picnic tables with some picnicking more than others with champagne corks popping and Marks & Spencer’s finest adorning the tables. Then, as usual with such an array of models it was motor inspecting time with bonnets up and much chatting as to the comparisons and merits of our different models. Although we do this at most meetings, looking and inspecting the other models never seems to lose its interest, perhaps that’s why we continually attend these gatherings. Driving our beloved cars is always a delight, especially for those of us with up and down tops. Time again for refreshments with afternoon tea. We are especially lucky with a certain accountant who shall be nameless but goes by the name of Sean, who has a penchant for cooking magnificent fruit cakes. His offering was devoured in double quick time. With all this excitement it was time for little shut eye for some of us older gentlemen in order to refresh ourselves for the drive home. With the sun beginning to dip it was time for one last cheerio and wend our home after such a wonderful day. Purring down the A1M with Mrs P beside me, the hood down and the sun shining was just as good as the first time I ever drove one of our splendid cars many decades ago. I know I echo the sentiments of all of those who attended our get together when I say a big thanks to Steve and Janet for organising this fabulous event and giving us the excuse to take our machines out to an especially great venue. We members of the RREC & BDC are so fortunate not only in the exclusive venues that open their doors to us but also in the time an energy that members give to our clubs in organising events. Not an easy task. What more can be said, when’s the next one.

BDC Silverstone - Saturday 6th August 2016 Having not been for some while, it was really good to revisit this action packed day that the Bentley Drivers Club have put on for the last sixty seven years. saying “you can’t park there” and other inanities. Arriving bright and early found Karen Hillier assembling the pennant and starting the line of Section cars until one of the few officials we did see offered us a far more prominent parking position nearer all the action. Although we were not that many, we were still able to attract a good few people to study and inspect our Section cars even though there was only one Rolls-Royce present, well done Mike Martin, every other attendee was in a Bentley.

One of our own was featured in the programme as last year Sean O’Connell won the opportunity to have his car painted by a professional, on canvas that is, not with spray guns and lacquer. Sean is pictured being presented with his prize by Timothy Potts, the artist. You never know we may be able to persuade Sean to bring it along to the AGM so we can all see the result. All in all, an excellent day and thanks go to Karen for initiating and organising everything. Perhaps next year will see a greater presence of the Section now we all know what to expect.
Steve Dolan Classic on Croxley Green - Wednesday 3rd August As has become the norm for those attending the Croxley Green car event at the beginning of August, met at the Boot pub in Sarratt for food and refreshments before leaving in convoy for the long and arduous 3 mile journey from the pub to the Green. We were directed on to the smaller rather than the larger main Green, where we all managed, after a fashion, to park in a couple of rows and set up the picnic tables. We were joined by rarely seen Club members Brian Gilmour and his wife in their Phantom I, who fortunately living a few hundred yards from the pub, were able to lead us all successfully to the Green. We were also joined by Pete and Liz Stabler in their Series II E-Type Jaguar. Peter lives near Dunmow but found that he has shared the Just a few of the Section cars that turned out

same barber in Watford with Brian for about forty years, and finally met having heard from the barber, each other’s car stories without knowing who the other person was. We also met up with Jane Weitzman who came in her Iso Grifo, just one of her collection of around 35 cars (although no Rolls-Royce or Bentley at present). I also spoke with a man who thought that he was a previous owner of my car because it came from Hadley Green Garage and was the same colour as the one he had. However, number plates change and he didn’t know the VIN number, so the chances are it was not his car. There is plenty of variety to see at this event with cars arriving and departing throughout the afternoon and evening, and an array of stands selling their wares. We presented a good selection of Rolls-Royce and Bentleys to add to the variety of toys on display at a relaxed event.

A Slippery Slope Part 4 Slightly later than estimated, the chrome plating has been returned from Colonnade, including the centre trim from the radiator shutters which was thought to be lost. The cost of having a copy made would have been over £200. The boss at Colonnade claimed that the chrome on my car was some of the worst he’d seen in fifty-five years, and it all took much more work to get it right. Bet he says that to all his customers! Nevertheless, the results are top class, and the price was reasonable. It’s the small things that are proving difficult and time consuming. For instance: the winter/summer heater and demister taps had been badly re-worked and had leaked, and new or even good second-hand ones seemed impossible to find. However, I posted a query about them on the RROC USA website, and was directed to Albers (Bentley Zionsville) in the USA, who make good copies. Overall, just those two items must have taken ten hours of searching the internet and e-mailing suppliers before finding suitable replacements. When I first drove the car I noticed the tachometer needle oscillating madly, which was probably due to a damaged drive cable. Again only poor second-hand ones were available from the regular spares suppliers, but by chance I obtained a new/old stock cable from the Bentley factory in Crewe. After fifty years the lubricant had dried out but once I’d cleaned and re-lubricated it, the cable’s perfect, with no discernible loss of motion between ends: the old one, by comparison could be twisted half a turn between ends. I was determined not to over-restore the car, but have adopted Henry Royce’s maxim “Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough.” Over the years corrosion has identified many weaknesses in design, not least the many fasteners found to be rusted and seized, despite the liberal use of cadmium plating. In areas such as body mounts and similar out-of-sight fixings, I’ve specified stainless steel fasteners. Other corrosion points on the coach-built cars in particular are the junctions of dissimilar metals. These components have been completely re-manufactured from the same metals, but each has been coated with epoxy paint before riveting together. The door skins were removed because much of the structure needed re-making, as all of the inner aluminium panels were in a very poor state. Particularly the front inner panels had been removed very many times to gain access to the electric window drives, and instead of re-fitting the panels with fasteners in the original position, dozens of selftapping screws had been used in new locations, and the edges of the panels were very fragile with many previous fixing holes. As shown in earlier photos, the body had been carefully braced with welded square tubing, so that it wouldn’t distort when removed from the chassis. This preparation paid off when the body was re-fitted without a hitch. Paulerspury People - Autumn 2016

A noticeable difference in the construction of James Young’s cars compared with – say – Mulliner is that the edges of the door skins weren’t wrapped round the frame. (In the previous article I believed that the edges had been folded but they had been dressed to look like a folded edge.) Instead the raw edges were aligned and the skin was spotwelded to the frame. The edges were then filed and rounded to create an even gap between panels. Few body restorers have welders powerful enough to spot-weld aluminium (the metal conducts heat away from the weld very quickly), so the skins will be plug-welded to the frame. This entails drilling 6 mm diameter holes through both parts and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding the hole to join the parts permanently. Effective, but more time-consuming than spot-welding. Over the years the car had suffered several accidents and inept repairs resulted in the profiles of the front wheel arches being markedly different. Wooden formers (“bucks”) were made to re-shape the arches to match. On the mechanical side, the engine block has been thoroughly cleaned, new liners fitted, and is now being re-assembled. But … a crack was noticed in the aluminium head, running between a spark-plug hole and inlet valve. I’ve been told that cracked heads are not unusual, and it might have been OK to chance leaving well alone, since there were no obvious problems when driving the car, but I decided to have the crack repaired by welding. That hasn’t gone too well: the contractor was unable to remove the steel spark-plug threaded insert - not surprising since he’s been asking around for an insert removal tool for a Bentley Continental GT! I’ve decided he’s not the man for the job and have recalled the head. So the search is on for a head repairer with an IQ above that of a mussel shell …

Crack Between Spark Plug Hole and Valve Seat 20/11/2016, 20:24
A couple of tappets were slightly below the wear limit, and new ones were obtained from Flying Spares. It didn’t stop there though because they are supplied oversize and had to be centreless ground to quite a tight tolerance. Although the water pump had been running satisfactorily, assuming it was the untouched original, it was prudent to dismantle it and check the seals. Well, it paid off because the “O” rings had become brittle and a polished thrust face was worn, so a new shaft complete with bearings and seals was fitted. As supplied, each end of the new water pump shaft had been sawn off! The tolerance should be around 0.005", and the one supplied to me was nearly ¼” longer. Fortunately I have a lathe … Should be good for another fifty years. Still to do are the locks. All were in a fairly bad state – the boot lock in particular – and need re-pinning. The problem with lock refurbishment is that they have to be completely dismantled before rechroming. Fortunately I’ve found someone who appears to have all the remaining stock of Yale pins and springs. I’d been putting off doing the locks but so far I’ve not found anyone able or willing to take them on, so it’s down to me now. The boot lock had been badly repaired and I’ll have to make a new outer part from scratch. An after-market air conditioning system Boot Lock (Right) had been fitted in the late 1980s and worked very well. The compressor was mounted on a modified water pump plate, which had been assembled to the engine and welded together in situ. All done to the most awful standard of workmanship and very visible at the front of the engine. Another example of carelessness was the misalignment by about ½” of the compressor pulley with the crankshaft pulley, further exacerbated by having the wrong size of V-belt groove. The compressor was designed to use R12 refrigerant, which has now been outlawed because of its alleged deleterious effect on the ozone layer, so it has now been remanufactured with new seals compatible with the latest fluid R134a, and fitted with the correct V-pulley. I decided to design a new compressor mounting plate on the same modified water pump plate principle, using stainless steel to avoid corrosion where the water pump is fixed. The parts were then laser cut from 6 mm plate, and TIG welded. Paulerspury People - Autumn 2016

Laser cutting is a very useful and cost-effective method of making one-off parts that would be very expensive if made by older traditional processes. For example the headlight backing rings, which usually rust badly, are made from thin sheet metal with several different-sized holes and cut-outs, and would cost at least £150 a pair if made by conventional methods, but only £15 in laser-cut stainless steel. However a simple computer drawing is required for the laser machine: I do my own, but a first year engineering student could do the same for the price of a case of beer. I pour myself a G&T … A number of setbacks are threatening the original target to complete the restoration in one year. As reported previously, the original polished woodwork restorer suffered an accident and the new contractor has had the work for eight weeks so far, and won’t give a firm completion date. The wood was first sent out for restoration in July last year! Re-trimming hasn’t started yet, and there has been a problem obtaining Connolly Vaumol leather, on which matter I’ll expand in a future article. Quite a few parts from well-known after-market suppliers have been of Redesigned Compressor Bracket (Computer Image) poor standard and required work, or were incorrect and had to be returned. A new wiring loom was ordered four months ago and still isn’t finished. The main restoration company is not to blame for the slippage, but many subcontractors appear indifferent to agreed completion dates, are incompetent, corrupt (yes), and careless. Although I’m perfectly able to select principle contractors, they often have to sub-contract parts of the work, so project control can get rather messy, with each contractor blaming the other when things go wrong. Furthermore, and understandably, most companies will give priority to their regular customers, so my job gets pushed to the back of the queue. I believe that my experience is common, and since most cars of this age are in a similar condition, I’m not surprised that the established good restorers quote two years minimum for a full restoration. I should mention the enormous help I’ve had from Norman Geeson. He restored the Paulerspury People - Autumn 2016

differential, but since then he has volunteered most useful information about the crankshaft damper assembly, camshaft and other critical parts of the mechanical rebuild. The knowledge he has acquired over many years is not readily available anywhere else, and future generations of restorers will find it much more difficult to restore our cars without the Geesons of today. Cost of the restoration so far about £260K. Sounds a lot, though top restorers are now charging over £400K for work to this standard.
