Compact FLS®-SUV LiDAR

The FLS®-SUV is a compact hyperspectral LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging system) based on Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) method. The device is used onboard of a vessel or stationary platform for observations of coastal waters and detection of oil and organic pollution. The ability of FLS速-SUV LiDAR to detect and map surface and subsurface oil can greatly expand oil mitigation and recovery options available to spill response teams by directing them in near real-time to identified concentrations not detectable by other means during reasonable timelines. HOW DOES IT WORK? Compact FLS速-SUV LiDAR The FLS速-SUV LiDAR is based on Ultra-Violet (excimer) laser and hyper-spectral detector. A pulsed laser beam senses the water body remotely. The resulting timegated echosignal is collected, spread into spectrum and recorded by detector. Read-out of comprehensive LIF spectrum per every laser pulse allows detailed analysis of its spectral shape by recognition of specific spectral patterns characteristic for oil and oil products and other chemicals in water. HOW DOES IT WORK? Compact FLS速-SUV LiDAR The system provides continuous underway monitoring of water pollution on board of travelling ship in fully unattended mode. Every measured LIF spectrum is accompanied with GPS coordinates and time stamp, and stored in the database. As a result, the georeferenced profile of oil pollution along the ship track is Typical LIF spectrum of seawater recorded. The system generates ALARM when the level of detected pollution is higher than preset threshold. Data processing and result delivery are carried out in Real-Time mode. Compact FLS®-SUV LiDAR

Installation of FLS®-SUV lidar is easy: due to its ruggedized design it is aimed at the operation on the open deck. The lidar has inclinable carriage (tilt angle 0–45o) for two operational layouts (see Figures below). When it is inclined, the laser beam is directed straight to the water surface. Another option is to use rotating mirror to direct the beam to the water. The latter is typically used when inclined installation is hampered. Onboard of a vessel or fix pan/tilt motion over oil platform.


OPERATION

Compact FLS速-SUV LiDAR

The FLS速-SUV operates in unattended mode according to preset measurement parameters. These settings are: alarm threshold for oil pollution in water; triggering setup for any external device in case of alarm; and the PRR - Pulse Repetition (Sampling) Rate. The PRR value defines the spatial resolution of the lidar in underway measurements: at the cruising speed of 20 knots and PRR=10 Hz the FLS速--SUV analyses every single meter of waterway.
