It was warm, bright Sunday morning at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Cars were being tested and getting ready for the drag strip while others were polishing and shining away at their show cars. VegasDrift was also running a practice and mini-competition not 100 yards away and putting on a good show at that. Wherever you were at LVMS you were surrounded by people whose love for performance was wild and kicking. The drag strip definitely brought out the Honda enthusiast in all of us; with Hondas in almost every running class. Regardless though, drag racing is one of the best
6
adrenaline rushes there is. A short 10-14 second run to the spectators, but ages of staging and prepping and psyching up for the driver. A great driver in conjunction with a great piece of machine is what the crowd got to see (not to mention hear) this past weekend. This was a test of the ability of engine makers and the engines themselves. Out in the lot, over 100 show cars were preparing to be presented to the judges. Lowered, cambered, stanced, crazy paint jobs, and unique vehicle wraps among other eye catching sights. Cars from all over

the west coast made an impression at this IFO. The absolute, 100% show stealer however, was the only GT-R with a Liberty Walk aero kit in the US. Jaws dropped, eyes oogled and ogled at this beauty, only seen before in Vegas at last year’s SEMA 2013 when several Liberty Walk fitted cars made their stand. Local crews made their impression in large numbers, many of whom have been featured in Carbon Magazine. A few hundred feet away, was the blaring noise of high performance motors and the smoke of tires made specifically for one purpose: drifting. VegasDrift certainly
put on a show for the spectators with their practice event. Ride-alongs (with some rules and regulations you had to follow) was also given to the paying crowd. That’s right! Spectators could discover what it took to initiate a drift at the top of 3rd gear (more or less). Tandem drifts and a mini-competition closed out the activities for the day, but still left people wanting more. When Import Face Off is in town, there’s no better place to be for the enthusiast at heart. Stay tuned for another face off heading back to Vegas in December this year.

ombining his life of soccer and passion for cars was never difficult for Etienne Barbara. Now at 31, he recalls the moment he got his license and moment he turned 18. He always had a passion for cars, and it took every fiber of his being begging and pleading and coercing his mother into buying him his ultimate dream car, an RX-7 FD3S. He remembers it fondly “It was a ‘93, silver, touring edition with a sunroof and the low wing, I loved it. You always remember your first.” It very quickly escalated from that point and he’s had 5 FD’s ever since. His life as a professional soccer player took him all over the world, playing and traveling for teams in his home country
of Malta, Germany, Canada, and in the US. He was playing the sport he loved for a living, and living the life of the ultimate auto enthusiast when the opportunity came at home. When at home, he put his cars first… Yes, car(s). His first purchase with the FD just fueled his need for more. Etienne had a (large) empty garage waiting at home for him when he wasn’t on the road with soccer, and he found every reason possible to fill it with cars. These were not just any cars. Etienne has had his share of fully modified performance cars. Legends in their own name. Some of the cars in his life in included two Skylines- an R32, R34, and let’s not forget to mention those FD’s.
Carbon Automotive Lifestyle Magazine | May 2014
9
He fondly recalls his R32 back home, “There was nothing comfortable about it. It’s a race car, and a modified one will snap your neck.” The R34 was a different story, “With that GT-R you get power and comfort all in one. Wide open throttle is no joke; it’s business. It was like a tank, when you floor it, it just feels like you’re stretching. I mean that the drivetrain never had to work too hard for the power you wanted.” His beloved FD is another story. Having a designer as a close friend who also designs cars for shows like SEMA, was a perk when it came to modifying the FD. At the time, the two friends looked to the VeilSide Fortune kit for the RX-7 for inspiration when designing their own kit. The wide body needed to be wide enough to run 13” wheels in the rear, and they succeeded. The ultimate goal at the time was to build a worthy show car, and an FD with

a widebody kit wasn’t the only idea he had. Etienne wanted something extremely unique and rare to add to his show car. He needed power. A motor that was only released in Japan is what Etienne needed to import. A rare 20B three-rotor motor was the only option. The three-rotor 20B was only used in the 1990-1995 Eunos Cosmo. It was the world’s first volume production twin-turbo setup; a super complex piece of engineering at the time. Each turbo has its own purpose- the first turbo receives exhaust gas from all the rotors to spool faster, effectively increasing low speed torque and almost eliminating turbo lag. The second turbo was on standby until the upper half of the rpm range went WOT, then the second turbo would spool up to get to full boost. When the changeover happened, it provided quick

“The FD is a whole different car. You can feel its soul. It’s like a wild beast in the light chassis. The car just wants to go, go, go.” acceleration and a wide torque curve throughout the entire rev range. He had fulfilled his goal of owning a three-rotor motor. Arguing with family is hard. Arguing with family across the globe is even harder. Arguing with your family to go over to your house and turn on your cars once a week while you’re thousands of miles away, is the hardest. For two and a half years while he was away, this was his weekly rou12
tine, and once he finally found out he was making a permanent stay here in the US, he had to make the hard decision to sell them all. His short rest from the modified car world, was just that, short. Being a semi-retired professional soccer player has its perks. Etienne is able to be close to his wife and young daughter while still doing everything he loves. He is now the Director of a soccer sports academy here in Henderson. He’s

still the same performance enthusiast; with more time than ever before, to really hone in on the specific car he wants. So when the moment to jump on another 20B motor here in the states came up, he seized the opportunity with the support of his understanding wife and love from his 3 month old daughter. This is his new monster. Etienne knew his decision to stay with the FD was the right choice. The FD will always be a part of his life.

cooler than average Sunday April morning at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s outside road course was the perfect venue for most of the turbo’d machines hitting the track for VegasDrift ProAm Round 3 of 2014. An exciting morning of qualifiers led to the top 16 who would be competing in the afternoon finals. If you know anything about the drift world, you’d know this morning was especially exciting with judges such as Forrest Wang, Odi Bakchis, Pat Mordaunt, George
16
Garcia, and Danny George making their job all that more difficult. The judges and spectators demanded plenty of ONE MORE TIMEs, only making the excitement grow. The end all came with the exciting end to the event, with veteran podium winner Spike Chen in first place with his supercharged S13, second place Cameron Moore in his SC300, and rookie Riley Fremont in 3rd place with his S14- his first ever podium finish with VegasDrift.

achery Yao Hitchcox, 27 year old has been a veteran in the drifting world since 2007. His first drift event was on the flight line at Nellis Air Force Base with VegasDrift 007, and to this day he’ll never forget that event and how he’s been hooked ever since. He recalls when Formula Drift had its inaugural series in 2004 in Long Beach. Zach fondly remembers making the trip down with friends. “We were a bunch of Honda guys at the time. Integras with B20 swaps; it was cool back then” Zach jokes. He loved his car at the time, but Formula Drift made such an impact on his enthusiast being, he knew it was time to kick the old habit and aim for a new adrenaline outlet. Enlisting in the Air Force in 2005 and serving 4 years in the branch, Zach was able to save the money and purchase the very same 240sx he uses today. Using the very popular “I’m not going to modify it, I just need it as a daily driver” spiel, Zach convinced his girlfriend (now wife) to give him the OK to purchase the car. With spirits high, he jumped right into drifting with the stock KA motor at the time- only to blow it the first time out drifting. After that bit of excitement, Zach opted for an SR20 swap and “Its been progressing ever since.” Don’t let the clean exterior of what you see now fool you though. Just like with any drift car, it’s been through some accidents here and there. The most memorable one being sliding backwards at 45mph straight into a K-rail. Even through that little tiff, Zach stayed faithful to his beloved chassis. Where most people would have decided to take the existing parts off and put it into another shell, Zach just worked through the hard times with his car. “I’m really attached to this chassis. We’ve been through a lot together. I’ve had it since before my kids were born. So just as long I don’t completely destroy it, I plan on keeping this for a long time.” Tailored toward reliability, power, individuality and being all around different is why Zach decided to go with a 1JZ GTE motor. He gives

credit to the team at Get Nuts Labs for influencing his decision to go with the JZ motor, “The guys over at Get Nuts really influenced me. They know how to build a 2JZ motor, and they build it right.” Importing his motor from Canada had to be one of the sketchiest things he’s ever had to so. Trusting that the compression testing was correct, when he received the motor, he lucked out and everything fell into place. Get Nuts Lab offered help in the motor mount setup and overall tips on making the best build. One of the first cages that Forrest Wang ever built is in Zach’s car. So began the build on his latest machine. A huge re-haul on the car has allowed Zach to take on lots of drift events both local and out of state. He is competing VegasDrift ProAm 2014 season, and also plans on attending Top Drift in California, and any other kind of seat time he can manage. Zach has come to realize his passion for drifting doesn’t come close to anything else. “One thing I’ve realized is that you can throw money into a machine as much as you want, but you can’t replace seat time and the experience you gain. Whether you’re working on the car or having seat time on the track, experience is experience and that can’t be replaced.” Any kind on enthusiast, drift or not, knows a car is never 100% complete. This is so for Zach’s car. Future refinements include chassis stiffening and bracing, opting for the V160 transmission, or rebuilding the current R154 and make it as bulletproof as possible. For now, he’s enjoying as much of this life as he can and he certainly makes the most of it. Through the ups and downs of his drift adventures, his family has stayed supportive and right by his side. He thanks his wife for dealing with random boxes being delivered on the front steps, and thanks his kids for being good to their mother while he’s off pursuing his passion. He also thanks Jessie at JS Fab, Get Nuts Lab, Forrest Wang, his crew Team Verzus, his sponsor Wiring Specialties and his little brother Eric that has been constantly making the trek across town to make sure he has the parts to succeed. 26

Ed Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, 27-year-old Ed Mansour made the move to Las Vegas just a couple years ago. Although Youngstown didn’t have much to offer when it came to the car scene, it didn’t stop him from having an interest in cars since the age of 15. These days, after a day at work, he’ll come home and order car parts for his daily-driven 2003 Subaru WRX wagon that he’s slowly started to mod up since it was picked up two years ago in Houston. However, Ed is into more than just his WRX. Yes, you can find him bike riding, snowboarding, and even kayaking. So naturally, he needed something that would blend his outdoorsy lifestyle with his love for cars; this is where his wagon comes in. Starting with
34
a Turbo XS FMIC, a turboback exhaust, and a few exterior upgrades, Ed has even bigger plans for the future of which he shared with the Carbon team. This includes a whole new EJ20H Legacy GT twin turbo motor and a new set of Work wheels ready to go on once he gets his new suspension setup. The rest? Well, that’s a secret. For now, you can see this beauty at many of the upcoming car shows. “It’s a good time to meet up with other car guys and hang out with my Uprising friends.” says Ed, who’d like to thank Matt, Zach, and Ricky for allowing him to come on board with Uprising and push him to make his car better and appreciate it more; to not just beat it up everyday.

ISS Forged & Continental Tire! Written by Jasmine Tamimi | Photo Lauder Corea
In Carbon’s last issue we presented you with a recap of the journey thus far in Lauder’s Evo X. He came from humble beginnings to show car status. Lauder knows the road is a long and arduous one, but the support from sponsors and his peers have been a great aid along the way. The next step in Lauder’s shoes has to also be reflected in the shoes belonging to his baby. Being a graphic designer has its perks when it comes to influencing Lauder’s next esthetic decision. Set after set after set of wheel rendering and designing and Lauder knew he had to do some research on which company to pursue once he found a design he liked. Months of endless searching and rendering finally brought Lauder to make his decision on what wheels he wanted to add to his growing list of modifications. Wanting a classic design, that is unique, that is more or less one of a kind, (double standard, yes) left Lauder with only one option really. Next addition to Project: be:CALM is thanks to ISS Forged. The decision to reach out to ISS Forged came from research about a company that takes pride in its decision to not mass manufacture their wheels. The benefit to no mass production meant that ISS Forged had the ability to give personal attention to each and every one of their wheels and clients. Review and staging, machining and finishing, and quality control and packaging are the very tedious steps ISS Forged takes in ensuring service unlike any other. Opting to go with the sport compact series ISS Forged FS-6R, the 3-piece, T-6061 forged aluminum wheel provided a look of classic inspired design that is handcrafted and engineered for performance. In addition to the new kicks, newest sponsor Continental Tire provided Lauder with brand new ExtremeContact™ DW tires to complete his new look. Hi Tiffany! Why don’t you tell our readers a bit about yourself? Well, I was born in San Diego, then raised in Vancouver, Washington. I came to Las Vegas when I was 19 years old and pursued Medical Aesthetics. I’ve been working in salons, doing modeling on the side, and have been building my portfolio since I was 18. I’ve also been in two music videos; one for Riff Raff and another for Collie Buddz. Whaaaaat?! We love Riff Raff! Do you have any interesting hobbies? I like to eat. Oh! Hanging out with my boyfriend is a hobby! We take walks and go shopping together. I love my car and it always has to be clean. It’s a hobby of mine. I just hate when it’s dirty. Nice! So what do you have? A 350z, its my baby. I worked hard for that! What cars have you owned? Hmm.. a piece of sh*t Saturn, but thank you Dad! He is amazing as he bought that as my first car. Then I had a Honda, a Subaru, and now a 350z. Do you have a dream car? An Audi R8 or a Cadillac.

... SWEET GIRL WITH A PUNCH Beautiful! What would you say is your biggest pet peeve? I’d have to say when I’m talking and people try to talk over me. Also, when I feel like I’m right, even when I’m not right, I just want to be right! Haha! You just have to win! So we know you work in salons, but what exactly do you do for a living? I work at a salon as a concierge and do spray tanning on side. We’re actually having a plastic surgeon come into the salon and have her facility there. When that happens, I’ll be doing medical aesthetics and microdermabrasions also. That’s why your skin looks so perfect! What would you say was your worst job? Red Robin, when I lived back in Washington. I worked there for a day and they fired me the next. Oh wow! Well, what’s one thing you’d like to accomplish? Getting my name out in the Salon and Medical Aesthetics industry because I’m really good when it comes to it since it’s my passion. I like to do microdermabrasions and medical peels. When you get it done, you can see a difference. When you do it religiously, you see an even bigger difference in their skin. So when I feel like I’m helping someone, not just selling them a product, but actually doing a difference in their skin, it makes me feel accomplished in what I do. Nice! That’s truly genuine! But, let’s talk food. What’s your favorite? I don’t have a favorite, because I eat all the time. However, my boyfriend cooks me steak all the time and I love when it’s extra fatty! Wait! No! Crawfish! That’s my favorite food! Okay, how about three words that best describe you? Loud, aggressive (yet very gentle), and adventurous.
