Editor’s note
Carbon issue 16 was a new concept to us all a couple of months ago, with many of us having little experience of what it is like to work on a magazine publication, however, I feel we have all embraced this, and created an amazing and exciting first edition, we’ve reached into, and researched what interests us, and you as readers in art, fashion, beauty, careers, entertainment and lifestyle. And what to look toward for through December and into next year. As the party season approaches, we all look forward to starting 2022 on a positive note, hopefully without the struggles we have all faced the past couple of years. We have all learned a lot about ourselves and the world in 2021, and a lot has happened; from starting the year with a lockdown to going back to a near normal, almost 2 years after the dreaded March 2020 where we said goodbye to society as we knew it. December is almost upon us, and hopefully also is our first proper Christmas in a while, Carbon Magazine has you covered with whatever you need to know about style in the thick of AW21 , from Afghan coats to Mesh party pieces... Or if you are more interested in what’s good in the entertainment world, maybe you’re looking for some career inspo for the new year, we’ve got you! I hope you read and enjoy our first edition of Carbon Magazine and keep an eye out for the talented creatives who have worked extremely hard at pulling this off. Teamwork makes the dream work!! Each year as a new set of young people take the reins and create what we think you’ll love to read; it’s a daunting but fun challenge, so take advantage and immerse yourself in our Carbon world.

As we move into the winter season, tights are making their way back into the very front of our closets, and patterned tights are the new staple of the season. From dots to hearts, to designer logos and slogan words, statement hosiery is what every on-trend fashionista is adding to their shopping baskets right now. Tights are always on trend in the last few months of the year, but they’re simple and easy. So adding a pattern or sloagn to your hosiery for this season sounds like a good idea to us. Make your black and monochrome winter looks stand out even more with this staple fresh off the AW2021 catwalk. Plus, keep your legs warm in the icy breeze and stylish at the same time. High street and online brands such as Boohoo, Pretty Little Thing and Primark have all started selling affordable versions of this new staple, along with luxury brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton, who are plastering their logos and slogans all over their new hosiery lines. Plain tights and matching boots paired with a mini skirt and leather jacket is the ultimate bad-girl biker look. But that’s just one way to style this gorgeous new trend; why not try wearing your patterned tights under a warm, flowy winter dress for example? Or a simple blaz-

er dress? This Autumn/Winter season is all about dark tones; blacks, deep reds, dark blues and browns. The patterned tights just add an extra dose of vibrancy and decoration to your outfit of the day. Winter outfits are known for being the favourite of most fashionistas out there, due to the layering, patterns and the ability to wear as many of your favourite pieces as you can (unlike summer, where fashion is all about trying to stay cool and not overheat)! As statement legwear becomes more and more prominent in the fashion world, why not try a coloured pair, such as white lace, a light pink or a patterned nude? Be on the lookout for the remainder of the year as we see these taking over the high street and the catwalk all Autumn/Winter season. Staying on trend and in style is all about breaking the mould and coming up with new ideas on how to wear your staple pieces - which is why we’re loving this trend!

As Cher is in school, many outfits have a professional vibe to them, for example collared shirts and matching co-ords. The apple green colour is trending right now where many fast fashion shops are selling similar bright green tracksuits. NEW BLACK? To create these two looks I used the Zara jersey green tracksuit £29.98 styled with a simple white vest from PLT and a black cap. For the colder days this would look great if you paired it with a black gilet or puffer coat. Keeping the outfit with neutral colours, black, white and nude, is important as its going to clash and look too much. This is more of a loungewear outfit but it could be dressed up too.

decon-STRU n o c e R
Break it down then stitch it up. Margiela, Watanabe and Kawakubo. What is deconstruction and who is doing it right?
Deconstruction and reconstruction is, at its roots, based on DIY. It’s the idea of taking things apart, whether that be household objects or a pair of shoes etc.. and reconstructing them into a new garment. The idea of DIY within fashion has always been around, that isn’t anything new, but more and more designers are incorporating this DIY theme into their collections. Deconstruction and Reconstruction encourage the idea of upcycling and reusing items to create new ones. The look below is taken from the FW 21 collection by John Galliano for Maison Margiela. This look depicts a jacket that has been re-stitched at the centre to keep it shut.
While definitley not the first to experiment with this design technique Martin Margiela, founder of Maison Margiela, was a pioneer. Margiela would often use other garments or accesorise and repurpose them into other garments. One noteable garment was the vest made out of white gloves (PICTURED BELOW). Other examples would be the repurposing of a motorcycle helmet into a purse/bag or the infamous jacket made of belts and buckles.

From earrings to necklaces, jewellery can always benefit your outift by bringing it all together with extra detail to upgrade your look to add an element of class . our top favourite trending jewellery consists of many popluar pieces from big chunky earrings to minimalist necklaces. Depending on your outfit, the right amount of jewellery turns to be the finishing touches - the icing on the cake. It can make or break a look.
Too much bling can make an outfit look clumsy and unproffessional whereas, too little can make an outfit look too simplistic and bare! Proffesionally speaking, the easiest way to decide the right amount of jewellery is to look closly at the patterning and colouring of the clothing. busy patterns and bright clothing wold mostly suit the idea that less is more and ou should stick the minimalist side. However, with plain and basic clothing the right amount of jewellery can increase the detail making a statement look.

FENDI X S
The Collaboration We Did Nicole Hardy
Weeks after Fendi broke the internet with their Versace collaboration, the Italian fashion house has unveiled another fashion collaboration, this time with Kim Kardashian solution-wear brand SKIMS. Some would say its unlikely pairing for a collaboration but somehow it works. Its set to be released November the 9th on a new website, you can sign up via a link to be notified as to when the collaboration drops as I’m sure we all know it will sell out within seconds. Luckily, we have already seen a lot of what the collaboration looks like via Skims and Kim’s Instagram’s and even Fendi’s Instagram.
Skims posted a video of Kim in one of the items and said this “FENDI and SKIMS have a cultural power very different from each other, but equally as strong. We share a desire to push boundaries and challenge convention which is how we found so much common ground collaborating.”
34
CARBON - FASHION
The drop also appears to include some of Fendi’s iconic bags like the Baguette Chain and Sunshine Shopper, new heels and a collection of leather wiggle dresses in SKIMS’ inclusive nude colour range. It looks like this new collection is honouring SKIMS’ long-held commitment to size-inclusivity. While exact sizes have not been released yet, promotional imagery shows plus-size models in the pieces. ‘My Fendi is about creating something for every woman, every different shape – and that’s something at the heart of SKIMS too,’ explains Kim Jones, Artistic Director of Fendi Womenswear and Couture.
Prices for the collection have not been released, though we are expecting prices to range between the usual SKIMS and Fendi costs. “Both Fendi and Skims have a cultural power very different from each other, but equally as strong,” said Kardashian in the press release. “We share a desire to push boundaries, think differently and challenge convention.” According to the release, the idea for a Collab came when Fendi creative director, Kim Jones, realised his co-workers were all waiting for a Skims drop in the middle of a meeting: “I thought let’s do something together.”

Faux Leather
Now we are in these cold winter months we have been adapting are wardrobe, so we are not cold and making sure we are looking trendy in winter fashion, and what else sums up winter more than faux leather. You can wear faux leather in many ways for example trousers/jeans, jacket, skirt, shorts, boots and even tops. So pretty much every item possible can come in faux leather which if you’re into the faux leather look and your style is street style then you are spolit for choice when it comes to faux leather. Faux leather has a similar look and feel to genuine leather, while being much more affordable. Traditional (faux leather) is also much less durable than (real leather) and tends to last only a fraction of the time. But faux leather is not real leather meaning no animals have died for the use of it. Faux leather is made from a plastic base and is then treated with wax, dye or polyurethane to create the colour and texture.

TThe biggest difference between the two is that real leather is truly unique, as no two hides are the same. This material has come a long way from its edgy all-black origins and is now available in a wider range of shades like burgundy, tan, white, and pink. Even if your style is far from bold, adding a contrary piece to your look is a smart way to apply the concept of “opposites attract” to your outfit to create an eye-catching, elevated look. A faux leather jacket is a classic that will stay in style for many many more years as it has already been around for decades. So we know from this that buying this item of clothing you will always get use out of it every year. Some of the best places to buy a faux leather jacket is ASOS – from here you can buy a cheaper one from £25-£40 but also spend a bit more money on one that more likely to last for many more years. Another shop is Misguided – misguided are very popular in winter for their coats and always bring it out the bag every year but they will always sell a well-made oversized or cropped leather jacket in many colours each year for a very good price for a very well-made item.
While leather bags are made from the skin of animals, vegan leather bags use faux leather alternatives like polyurethane, which is a coating put on fabric to give it a leather-like sheen. You can buy a faux leather bag from anywhere now a day as they mostly what everyone wears now because they come in so many styles like Tote bag, shoulder bag, clutch, across the shoulder, mini bag, quilted bag and the list goes on. These bags come in so many colours, sizes and as you can see from above styles and they go with any outfit.
Faux leather pants are an essential in winter months. They come in many colours but two very popular this winter are brown and black. “The Harrie Show” is a nickname created online by his fans (Harries) to refer to Harry Styles’ concerts during Love on Tour due to the variety of fashion styles showcased at the show.
Harry Styles fans around the globe have been eagerly waiting up on social media waiting to see the stars suit each night, but also to see what the fans are wearing! Some fans have compared the concerts to fashion shows as fans gain inspiration, in a new way, from their idol. So, we’re here to tell you how you can look just as fabulous when attending a concert of your own.
Some fans have taken to recreating the most iconic looks of Harry himself, including the yellow Gucci suit he wore to the Brits in 2020 as well as his pink and white look from the cover from his album. Whereas other fans are channeling Harry through their own style and in a new way, whether they’ve done it by pulling out bright colours, pretty patterns or by wearing flares, it’s clear Harry has been of some influence. A few of the lucky fans attending represent his style by wearing his signature boots or feather boa.
Some staple places to look include Zara, Asos, Pretty Little Thing and Shein. A lot of fans turn to Shein for affordability but it may not be the best option in terms of sustainability.

As we enter the midst of autumn/winter 2021, bringing the luxury of freedom with us, it is important to note that this also means freedom of expression. While locked indoors we saw the fragility of life unravel right before their eyes, deeming it too precious to not experiment the way we’ve always wanted - especially our fashion choices - once the world opened up again. This said expression of one’s self is notably historical, and the cyclical nature of fashion is clear as we find our future is nostalgic of the past. We as consumers have had more than enough time in quarantine to indulge in trends that aren’t all too new. First we have the 70s. It was a transformative and rebellious time- just like today. It was the time of the civil rights movement, feminism and spirituality, mirroring what we see now.

world has enjoyed crochet throughout the summer, many making s themselves as a lockdown hobby, and with its influence from the 70s will be carried on into a/w fashion as we explore the versatility of it ghout the season.
we did see these peek through on a niche scale throughout 2020, fast on brands and the runway have been influenced to produce these ideas vaster proximity. For some, the neutral palette of autumn and winter ranscend into saturated bold patterns and textures, as like in the 70s, ing in is no longer an option.
riad of vintage fashion will be seen throughout A/W 21. As we spent uarantine consuming the news, sustainability has been highlighted as nd ourselves being more conscious of the state of our planet. We had to clear out our wardrobes, contributing to the rise of second hand ng, whether it be shopping at charity shops, or using sites like Depop.
The glitz and glam of the 2000s has been and is still making its way back to us. Low rise everything and vintage shoulder bags. Blumarine eloquently kickstarted this notion in their F/W21 collection. Prada’s re edition of the 2005 nylon shoulder bag also shows the trend reaching high fashion houses. Consciousness is highlighted with more and more fur being purchased second hand; headbands - seen in skiwear - and other accessories, like bags, being the star of the show this A/W. Even Moon Boots are back with ASOS stocking them new, but since they were such a vintage statement, they’re sure to be featured on second hand sites as the temperature drops. This past year, we have learnt to appreciate the simple things in life, but we can’t say the same for fashion. Being indoors for so long has allowed the exploration of one’s identity and expression and with more and more brands- high street and luxury- catching on, this A/W get ready to make a statement with a futuristic take on previous decades’ trends, and make the most out of the art of silhouettes and textures from fashion’s past.

Faux fur is here to stay this winter and could be argued it is more popular than ever before. After a few years of popularity surrounding ways to upcycle, be more sustainable and the movement within animal rights - Faux fur is back and more economical than ever. new synthetic fibres have been popularised within this fabric making faux fur more consumend than ever before.
Bella Hadid looked diva-ish in an animal-print faux-fur coat by House of Harlow 1960 x Revolve while out and about in New York City
Kendall Jenner in one of cult outerwear brand Saks Potts’ signature statement coats
Even celebrities and style icons such as Bella Hadid, kendall jenner and Dua Lipa. Have jumped onto this trend and switched out real fur for faux. Bella wears a leapard print longline style paired with an all black outfit which accentuates the pattern by making it an iconic and statemnt coat to have. This is similar to kendall where she pairs her faux fur with a leather jacket in a bright green neon style which she styles clerverly, with an all white jumpsuit which doesnt take any attention away from the phospherescent slick and statemnt styled jacket. Dua chooses to go with more of an understated piece with pastel grey coloured fur that gives a more muted tone but still manages to create a statemtent piece that stands out against the rest of her clothing making it the focus point of her outfit. Sold all over the world, faux fur is becoming one of the top 10 searched items on websites such as Asos, Boohoo, Pretty Little Thing & Nasty Gal. This popularity has taken over the previous trend last year, of cropped puffer jackets. Whilst this style created a trendy look and managed to show off statement trousers or bottoms, it wasn’t the best coat to insulate yourself during the cold Winter British months as it didnt cover much of your body. This trend however manages to look and be trendy along with practical side with it kepping you warm whether you’re out just walking the dog or going out for drinks in the evening with your friends. Air Force Nike released air force 1’s in 1982 and now to this day is Nikes most popular and best-selling shoe. Everybody from super models, rappers and us, owns a pair. The AF1 was only meant to be produced for two years and then be discontinued, but instead became a fashion staple. But when everybody Is wearing the same trainer, it leaves you thinking ‘what trainers can I wear to step up my outfit? and not match everybody else on the street’.

Fall Coats 2 Nicole Hardy
WINTER COATS YOU NEED THIS SEASON Winter is now among us and is getting colder by each day, which means it’s that time of the year where the glamourous coats and jackets come out. Every year you have the same coats in style like the classic puffer coat but also there will be a certain style or certain colour or even a new
coat in going crazy. Last year there was the old school brown North Face Gillet puffer coat that went crazy and people were selling for £100s of pounds but no one could get there hand on and if you had one or could afford one you were blessed!
This year in autumn the bomber jackets went crazy and everyone wanted one and everywhere luckily was selling them, if you are into a more subtle look you could get the classic black or blue one with some patches or badges on or if you’re into the bolder look then get a colour one like a khaki green which is always a loved colour or even a white or a bright green if you’re feeling bold.
Another is of course a classic trench coat from Zara or H&M if your wanting a cheaper option or if you want to splurge then the classic and original famous trench from Burberry, this is always in every year and photographed on all celebs every year. Originally dates back to the 1860s used in the military and in the war and worn by Marilyn Monroe in her 1960 film “let’s make love” now it’s a timeless style item used for a sophisticated look.
56

2021
So, what should we be buying or
option.
Thirdly if you’re into the sophisticated classic look then defiantly a trench coat to add a bit of smart wear to your look, you can wear this to look like a boss to work or school but will also look amazing on a day out in London. You can buy this from most places but a favourite and best seller is always from H&M.
Secondly an oversized leather jacket is a must have for the edgy street style wear, you can dress this up for nights out on top of your outfit to keep you warm or dress it down and chuck on over the top of a comfy jogger co-ord, either way this is defiantly a must have if your into street style. This also can be bought from any store but I would defiantly recommend ASOS again or even Primark if you only want to spend around £20. Fourthly a colourful blazer to add that sense of summer colours to winter but keeping warm, a blazer is great for a night out or a special day trip. Summer colours are staying with us this winter they are not hyphenating waiting for next summer like normal, so keep your colourful blazers out. A great place for a colourful and good quality blazer is Bershka they had amazing colours this past summer and carried them into autumn.
WRITTEN BY - NICOLE HARDY DEISGNED BY NICOLE HARDY
First you need a classic puffer coat, can be short/cropped one or even a longline one which were very popular last year and continued into this winter. This you can buy anywhere but very good online sites would be ASOS or misguided for more of a cheaper
grabbing from the wardrobe this year ?
It’s all about matching your coat to your outfit is ultra-important and ultra-easy. This doesn’t mean your outerwear needs to be the exact same colour as what you are wearing. Yet, matching the shade is usually a good idea, Black is the best colour when it comes to making your life easy in the outerwear world. These are just 5 examples of some must have and trending coats of this season, you don’t need all of them even just having a normal puffer and one extra one is enough to look stylish AF this winter

Layering up Our carbon guide on layering through winter
Firstly, whatver the weather temerature is outside, remember to wear a lightweight top or a long sleeve that isnt to thick for a base layer as when walking you might abit hot so you can delayer yourself. It is also important to wear comfortable clothes as stubborn materials can be uncomftable to wear. Leggings make a good fit as they pair with anything and come in a lot of colours. Jeans are practicle aswell and they hug to the body more if they are skinny jeans. Dependent on weather you can have thin or thich leggings. Jeans will keep out the cold as denim is a thick hardwearing material.
Secondly a middle layer needs to be added to the outfit. This can include a thin or thick thickness of clothing which can be worn through jumpers, sweartshits or zip through hoodies. Very much dependent on how cold it is outside. A zip through hoodie saves the fear of getting too hot with all the layers on as its easy to unzip to get you to the right temperature, whereas if you get to hot in a hoodie or sweatshirt you would need to take it off which then might leave you to be cold and having to hold all these items of clothes around with you. It is easy to be unique in the way you style these clothes, for example a plain base layer with a graffiti or colouful middle layer. Or autumnal colours to match the colour sceme of the season.
58
CARBON - FASHION
Finally to top off the layered outfit, you need accessories. A cross bag or shoulder bag would compliment the outfit and bring abit more colour into the scene. Bags are also very handy to have as you can pop all your essentials in if there are no pockets on your outfit and if there are pockets can easily fill up with unnessasary junk. Layering up can be boring with plain colours so adding abit more would make the outfit stand out. Along side with shoes. A black outfit could benifit with colouful shoes with a matching bag. Jewellery is also important to wear. Earrings, a shiny bracelet and a necklace can add some elegance and class. Colourful rings can add some pop aswell.

Thirdly a outer layer. This can consist of coats, jackets or gillets. Leather looks can top of an outfit as they do look aesthetically pleasing. Leather is very durable as it will protect you from the wind and the rain. Leather acts as a good heat insulator. Big puffed coats are durable from the wind and they are made to last long. Depending on what look you are going for outer layers can justify to your outfit. Going out or have a casual gillets can provide that look for you. Reverasable coats, gillets and jackets can make an outfit unique due to being able to change it around if you manage to get bored.

How To: A good way to transform your summer pieces into winter pieces when we’re talking tights, is to layer. If you opted for brighter colours to customise during the warmer months, try layering those pieces with lower denier black tights to create a deeper colour. Don’t shy away from knitwear either, if you have any old jumpers or you’re venturing into charity shops any time soon, try grabbing a thick knitted jumper (preferably in a neutral colour) and cutting it to your desired length making sure to leave a few centimetres extra, then with your hands or scissors fray the rough edge to add some texture to your outfit. Experimenting with how you wear your clothes in the first place can be enough to refresh your outfit. For example, if you have a long sleeve midi dress that you don’t know how to style in a creative way, try wearing it like a skirt. Remove your arms from the sleeves and let the bodice

In order to break the micro trend cycle (which negatively impacts both the environment and our bank accounts) being able to adapt your wardrobe to the current season is important. Instead of burying all your cut out tights tops in your wardrobe never to see the light of day again, try dressing them up for the cold. The good thing about this trend is that it’s centred around basic pieces of clothing, pieces that are inherently versaitle as they are usually in more neutral colours and can be layered or accessorised as you like them in order to fit in with what’s currently popular.

Sneakers: from concept to shelf
62
CARBON - FASHION
Where trends tend to differientiate across the world, the globe is united by the design and fascination off sneakers, proving their significance in fashion and completing a look. So much so, sneakers are now commonplace on international catwalks and experimentation is more frequent when it comes to the design of sneakers to challenge the traditions of footwear. Designers are taking many factors, such as climate control into consideration for material innovation.
Design is the first process a brand is faced with, which helps define the brand. That nike tick never moves for a reason. The designers influence for the designns, suprisingly come from anywhere and everywhere. Tinker Hatfield took inspiration from a building in Paris, the Georges Pompidou Centre, for crafting the first Air Max. The best designers look outside fashion for inspiration.
With designing and producing footwear being so complex, big sneaker brands, such as Nike, use the industry-defining manufacturing outsorcing strategy. They use third-party manufacturers because of the cost advantages. Your shoe could travel to up to 20 factories and be made with material from all over the globe. China is responsible for 55.5% of produced sneakers, with USA being sneakers biggest consumer (responsible for 29%.)
Depending on how well known the sneaker brand is, and how well the shoe was advertised, the average reseller, such as Footlocker, will use computer programmes, such as bots to get these designed, and manufactured shoes on their shelves.
Sustainability is becoming a consumers requirement, so it is important for a brand to ensure their sneaker is eco-friendly. With the best sustainable, travel appropriate shoe belonging to ‘Tropicfeel’. They claim they are activitating the power of collaboration to challenge the status quo. By your shoe travelling to more factories, it is more eco-friendly. As they say, durability is the key to sustainability.
The future of designing sneakers includes integrated technology that tracks performance, such as running speed and calories burnt. Design movements such as ‘barefoot’ are also in the future of sneakers. This movement champions the idea that the closer we are to being barefoot, the better for our bodies. Utilising natural protective mechanisms which aim to improve foot flexibility, balance and strength.

we never go out of style from classsics to couture, hollywoods favourite pieces are making a comeback and are inspiring pieces for many current stylists.
Heavily inspired from Marilyn Monroes iconic fushia dress from ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, Anya Taylor-joy wears a beautiful pink gown to film festival promoting her most recent film “Last Night in Soho”. From the colour, to the cut, the accessories and bow anya takes pride in creating a look that evidently shows influence yet still creates some originality to divert the looks. whilst maralin’s dress consists of a strapless neckline, Anya’s creates a more formal and buisness approach with sleeves just above the elbow and a more squared neckline. This isn’t the only Marilyn inspired look that has recently taken to the red carpet. Billie Eiliesh also took influence from maralyin wearing a magnificent ballgown, styled with a bouncy blonde bob wig with glamourous makeup and a red lip. The dress has a sweetheart neckline, matched with tulle layers cascading from the waist where the corset waist ends. This old hollywood glamours style of elegance and delicacy has a continouing revival and is a magnificant trend.

The Swinging By Sonia Osuji
DESIGNED BY- SONIA OSUJI WRITTEN BY- SONIA OSUJ
2021 fashion has been greatly influenced by past era’s like the groovy 70’s with the music videos that came out last year and this year. Bright makeup looks from the 80’s on red carpets, the oversized trends from the 90’s, the naughties with Y2K being an extremely huge and popular trend at the moment, and of course, the swinging 60s era. Sixties trends have made a big comeback this year from hair and beauty, right down to shoes.

Many current trends that have been going around lately have been inspired from the famous 1960s era. This includes trends with hair and styling, clothing and accessories such as shoes and back to beauty again with makeup looks. This random 60s influence started late last year and has blown up a great amount through celebrities such as Ariana Grande and the rising want for platform boots.
In terms of clothes, 60s trending coordinates have been turtle necks pared with mini skirts and a well done clash of colours. Flare styles, bishop sleeves and babydoll dresses. As for accessories, high platform boots are very popular right now with vintage Versace collections getting lots of praise on social media platforms like Twitter. White knee high are extremely popular right now and up for many
grabs. Surprisingly, more and more women are brightening up their hosiery game with coloured tights. Headbands are also trending right now as well as low heeled sandals like the Gucci rubber slide sandals and platform Mary Jane shoes. In terms of beauty, 60’s inspired makeup looks are at large at the moment and are continuing to stay popular. We’re seeing exaggerated cut creases and accentuated bottom lashes.

Ariana Grande for ‘Positions’ MV
Ariana Grande has in no doubt swung sixties trends back to a new era. Her album ‘Positions’ that was released in October of last year was full of 1960 inspired aesthetics from the clothing to the hairstyles and the music that was produced. From this, the dolly swoop was publicised greatly and is a ver y popular hairstyle at the moment. Miss Grande is bringing back many dif ferent 60s hairstyles and no one’s complaining. The famous pop star also popularised oversized studs, a ver y cute accessor y to wear. In the Positions music video, she is the president of the United States in many scenes and her wardrobe definitely seems inspired by Jacqueline Kennedy whose style and influence were colossal during the early era of the 60’s. We also can’t forget that she is THE pioneer for babydoll dresses. Pave the way for Miss Ariana Grande, the queen swinging the 60’s back.

Back to Versace, their fall 2021 ready-to-wear collection was full of bright coloured 60’s inspired aesthetics and moments from the baby doll dresses to the splendid array of platform boots and Mary Janes. They were described to have “sci-fi fabric treatments in a slightly retro-futuristic expression”. Ariana Grande was spotted from head to toe in a Versace bright yellow look straight off the runway in her guest appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden. On the show, she celebrated the end of mass lockdowns with a “Good Morning Baltimore” parody from “Hairspray” with Marissa Jaret Winokur and James Corden. In late March, soon after the Versace fall/ winter ready-to-wear collection had dropped. Miss Grande posted a post to her Instagram page of her in a sparkly Versace dress and shoes. She looked absolutely amazing - like a 60s popstar.

Seeing someone’s bra through their clothes is no longer a fashion faux pas, but the sign of a true ontrend fashionista.

Underwear as outwerwear has risen exponentially in popularity over the past few years, with many thanks to Kendall Jenner’s love of lace tops and bras over shirts. After all, if Kendall Jenner is papped in it, we can guarantee it will be sold out the next day. From this new trend, mesh tops and dresses have taken over high street stores. Seeing someone’s bra through their clothes is no longer a fashion faux pas, but the sign of a true on-trend fashionista. High Street brands such as H&M, Bershka and Primark are now selling these new gworgeous, almost see-through pieces. So how can you wear this trend with confidence? Pick out your prettiest or comfiest bra that you want the world to see, and pair it with a sheer, long sleeved top. Some designs we’re loving at
the moment are monogram logos, slogan quotes, simple patterns, over-the-top prints and graphic collages printed all over the top. Also, if showing off your bra isn’t so much your vibe, you can always wear a simple black bodysuit or crop top underneath. Every piece of clothing can work for you, it’s just about how you style it. The mesh look is often styled to be a grunge aesthetic with street-style roots. But that’s not all it can be - many pieces are pastel, floral and pretty. They can be girly and fun, sweet and romantic, or dark and gothic. In essence, we’re telling you to embrace this style wholeheartedly, there’s no excuse not to incorporate it into your wardrobe there’s so many different styles and colours for every aesthetic and look. How daring will you be?

GRAPHIC KNITWEAR It’s official, graphic knits are the coolest way to stay warm this autumn/winter. We’ve seen them on the runways, we’ve seen them on insta, brands from high end to high street are catching on to this trend and soon the only thing in our wardrobes will be sweaters, cardigans and sweater vests. Here are some examples of brands we’re obsessed with that are all about funky knitwear right now.
Lockdown was dull and gloomy, and now that we’re free, bright colours and funky prints are in, but we still want to prioritise comfort of course, so a colourful knit sweater will be your best friend this season.

Cut out dresses are the new style this party season. It has also been named the “naked” trend. This is definantley the riskiest dress to wear on a night out but thats why its such a big trend to be bold and daring. However, cut outs can also be placed to make a dress look more elegant like a teardrop shape. It can be the simple effect can make a basic black dress look expensive. Pretty Little Thing have a range called cut out dresses which many of them are under £15. This is a great line for students wanting to look boujee on a budget. One of the trending cut out dressses is Poster Girl’s “Miranda Dress” as seen worn by Kylie Jenner and other famous influencers and Asos are selling a dupe identical for over half the price.

CRYSTAL
Carbon tells you about the latest crysral beauty trend Gua Sha...
If you haven’t heard about the new crystal beaty trend Gua Sha’s yet where have you been? Recenlty it has become one of Tiktoks skincare trends showing before and afters of how it imporves your complexion or showing how to use. The Gua Sha is a crystal shaped into a heart stone which was was inspired by an ancient Chinease ritual to massage the face and body while activating blood circulation. They would use this all over body as a massage tool to help reduce inflamation and break down scart tissue. However more recently it is used to achieve a smlimmer and younger looking face. There are so many benefits of using the tool: it lifts and tones, relives puffiness, smoothes wrinkles, gives a brighter complexion, reduces dark circles and firms face. There are two types stones you can buy; a pink rose quartz or a green jade gua sha. The pink Gua Sha is the most popular one to use becuase of the beautiful pink colours it has. It was made using a rose quartz crystal shaped into the traditional love eart shape. Rose Quartz is is also known as a healing crystal and the stone of unconditional love. It has loving vibrations within it which restores balance to the mind and heart of the user. Using the rose quartz gua sha is great for firming and lifting the skin whilst having a soothing effect. It will also help promote self love, reflection and acceptance, this is the most calming stone out of the two. The Jade crystal is a protective stone and increses love and nurturing while attracting good luck and friendship. It is the perfect stone for grounding and balancing the body. The jade gua sha will help reduce facial tension and lymphatic drainage. Both stones have similar physical benefits is the actual crystal that have differnt meanings behidnd them which are so fasinating.
How do you use it? The heart shaped tool may look confusing to use but its really so simple. Make this part of your daily skincare routine and after you have applied your favourite moisturiser or facial oil it’s the perfect time to use the Gua Sha. Having an oily base is going to help the tool move smoothly over your face instead of pulling your skin. If your looking for a sharper jawline and to emfasise your bone structure all over your face, put the dip in the gua sha on your jaw and glide the tool side to side. This is going to help drain everything to your neck and also get out any knots, you will want to drag up and down you neck after that. After using this daily you can achive the look of a slimmer face. The other popular way to use it is gliding up and down your cheeckbones and temples. This will increase bloodflow to those areas and overall imporve complexion. When you wake up and your face is a bit puffy, just using this a few times is going to help reduce swelling in the face and make you look bright and fresh. You can put it in the fridge too so it will wake you up more when your using a cold gua sha on your face. If you want to use it in its traditional way as a healing tool for your body, use the the flat side of the gua sha and use upwards and circular motions. You can use this on your neck, arms, legs, back, cheast and stomach. The Gua Sha’s used for these pictures were £3 each from ebay but you can find them in lots of drugstores like Superdrug has brands such as Revolution whpo are selling them for £8. If you are wanting to buy one of the real crystal gua sha’s, you have to be careful with choosing as there will be lots of fake ones going about.

ECCENTRIC eyes FOR WINTER 2021 For so long we’ve had the no-makeup-makeup-look, and now its time to make way for bright eyeshadows, glittery eyeliner, and funky shapes. Winter months can meansomething different to everyone, however for the majority it just feels cold and dreary. Contradict your feelings with these vibrant eye looks to make you feel your best during these times.
These looks can be worn with a full face for evening wear or daytime use as well. To fully complete the look you could add a matching lip colour to make even more of a statment.
Creating different shapes on your eyes can lead to more interesting looks. For example this pink eyeshadow dragged out makes the eye appear brighter.

CARBON - BEAUTY
To achieve these loud looks, choose an eyeshadow pallete with multiple shades of the same colours to build on your look. Image 1 was created using the Morphe x James Charles Artistry Palette, starting with a light orange colour as a base and blending a deeper orange into the crease. This helps the look have more definition and to appear less flat. Further blending allows the eyeshadow to sit seamlessly on the eye. To finish off the look, a lime green pigment on the inner corner adds another pop of colour. These colours work well together as they are almost opposites on the colour wheel.
Green can be a very festive colour around the end of the year, however it should also be used year round. A light wash of green eyeshadow on the lids draws attention and completes a makeup look. As the colour is quite prominant, matching the eyeshadow to your outfit could create a bold and powerful ensemble.
Glitter and shimmery eyeshadows can also be fun and draw attention to the eyes. Blue is seen as a cold colour so it’s only fitting to create a makeup look focusing on it, especially as we speed into icier temperatures.

The start of World War II had a widespread effect on the planet in both big and small ways. War rations impacted beauty and fashion industry trends as women were needed in the workplace and had less time for grooming while men were at war. For this reason, women had less of a beauty routine and prized easy to upkeep styles which put an emphasis on low-maintenance, medium-to-thick eyebrows. With massive changes in eyebrow trends, the ‘80s and ‘90s were maybe the most exciting time when it comes to brow history. The bigger the better was the motto for the ‘80s where shoulders pads, nails, and hair towered sky-high. Eyebrow trends followed suit with models like

Brooke Shields leading the movement with big, beautiful brows.minimalism was then pervaded over fashion and beauty which was dubbed “heroin chic.” Along with this, groomed yet natural-looking brows became the preferred look on the runway. People tried to regrow their eyebrows from the damages of over-plucking allowing the full grown brow to finally make a comeback with the help of celebrities like Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins. The center tuffs of the eyebrows were brushed up giving the look of eyebrows set fairly close together. The effects of mistreating our eyebrows in the ‘90s resulted in the development of eyebrow treatments, including balms, serums, and microblading to
stimulate regrowth. This time also brought the rise of social media and the selfie where front-facing cameras forcefully confronted us with ourselves and makeup became an important way of enhancing the face for photos. What’s better known as the “Instagram eyebrow” or the “HD brow” became popular on social media channels Our tweezers are on hiatus for now, but if history is any indication, it’s only a matter of time before they’re in high demand once again. : Y T I V I S U L C N I From the very beginning, Rihanna’s heart was set on making her brand accessible for all and this became her marketing mission. Fenty Beauty first launched with 40 shades of foundation and has expanded to 50. At the time, there wasn’t a brand that truly reached everyone from the lightest skin to the darkest. Many undertones, such as olive and pink tones were not catered to in the beauty industry. Inclusion was more than the number of shades, but this was a start to allow so many women to find themselves in the brand and feel included. The brand reportedly made $100m in just over a month, Time magazine named it one of the 25 Inventions of the Year, and what is now known as the “Fenty Effect” took hold. Suddenly beauty brands began extending their shade ranges to accommodate a variety of skin tones. 40 shades became the new standard. One key difference is how Rihanna marketed Fenty Beauty which Time Magazine noted as being part of the genius behind the success of the brand. Fenty Beauty uses models from many ethnicities allowing the brand to become known as “the new generation of beauty.” Interestingly, while “inclusivity” is the buzzword most frequently and closely tied to the Fenty Beauty venture by consumers and the media, alike, Saputo claims that the collection was not explicitly marketed that way: “We never once used the word ‘inclusive’ in our messaging. Instead, she says, “Our approach to inclusion marketing has always been about ‘showing, not telling’ … [we want] to share authentic stories that are rooted in culture and are emotionally meaningful to consumers.” That, she says, is a far better way to reach consumers than merely throwing around marketing keywords aimed at generating buzz. Unlike other celebrity lines, Rihanna didn’t just slap her name on the label and call it a day. She was 100 percent involved in the process, including packaging, marketing, and formulation—something she said was especially important to her given the number of times she’d walk away from the makeup chair only to be disappointed. Fenty was a labor of love, and she made it so no woman would ever feel that frustration. “I never could have anticipated the emotional connection that women are having with the products and the brand as a whole,” Rihanna told Time last November.

CELEBRITY PERThere are a lot of popular celebrity scents such as Kim Kardashian’s “KKW Fragrance” and Shawn Mendes’ “Shawn Mendes Signature” so when looking for the perfect scent where do you start? We’re here to give you the five best celebrity perfumes.
1. Ariana Grande’s REM
- REM is a fragrance for women that was launched in 2020. The top fragrance notes are fig, salted caramel, marshmallow and quince, the “heart notes” are pear blossom and lavender blossom and the base notes are white musk, sandalwood and tonka bean. The fragrance has a theme of outer space and that is reflected in the outer packaging as well as the the piece provided to showcase the bottle of perfume. REM is the perfect, long lasting fragrance that you need.
3. One Direction’s Our Moment - One Direction’s first perfume “Our Moment” may have been aimed at a younger audience but it still provides a unique scent desirable to most. Red currant, pink grapefruit and forest fruits are the top notes whilst the middle notes and base notes are freesia, jasmine, musk and “woodsy” notes. The packaging is a pretty pastel pink which matches the tone and femininity of the perfume.
2. Kylie Minogue’s Darling - Kylie Minogue’s fragrance “Darling” holds an everlasting feeling of nostalgia when you smell it. The top notes include a floral scent that’s finished off with a note of passionfruit whilst the heart notes provide a blend of lily and bonoria. The bottle is unique with it’s shine and sparkle and is a staple perfume in any collection.
4. Shawn Mendes Siganature - Lemon, pineapple, apple, sugar maple accord, rose petals, white cedar and skin musk are all in the three layers of notes within Shawn Mendes Signature which is a unisex perfume designed by the pop star. The scent is definitely fruity but the scent of white cedar brings it down the scent of fruit slightly to level it out nicely. The bottle is basic but has a metal embellishment in the shape of a guitar pick that has his initials scribbled on it.
5. Ariana Grande’s God is a Woman - The notes for God is a Woman are ambrette pear, rose petals, vanilla and cedarwood. There is significantly less going on which means the perfume doesn’t have as much of an overwhelming scent but that doesn’t mean it isn’t strong. The scent is feminine and holds a light scent throughout the day.

BUILDING A BRAND
George wearing the Burner tee
130
CARBON - BEAUTY
“I started off by making a t-shirt for one of my friends birthdays, people started showing interest in them and asking if they could buy one. I sold 20 and went from there.” As an FRA graduate, George has been building on his interest in fashion for a while. Eventually he found a market in embroidery and slogan work in 2017, around the same time that rose embroidered vans and Nike jumpers became a trend which he said he “regrettably” joined in on. However, since then George has come far in designing fashion graphics, each collection emulates his own personal style and interests at the time of production. “My favorite piece has to be the hand to hand joggers or the lighters, they felt the most on brand for what I was doing at the time” Whilst Visionary Studios specializes in clothing, sloganed lighters combined with bottle openers also proved to be a big hit – “Bun the zoot, don’t let the zoot bun you”. The advertising campaign for them also reads: “Some of the brightest people I know have burnt out too quick due to abusing weed. So I made these, as a reminder to bun the zoot and not let the zoot bun you”. This is a testament to George’s way of working: “I like to be organic when I work, you can tell when people are putting pieces out because they have to, I want my stuff to be authentic”. In a market where a lot of streetwear is superficial and trend reliant, perhaps stripping back the design
George explains that currently most of his pieces are printed on blanks, already manufactured garments that are screen printed onto or embellished using his own designs – a method that a lot of smaller designers start off with as it’s a cheaper and faster way of getting your designs out there. Breaking through the cut and sew barrier is something that can be challenging ,but is definatley worth pusuing. “With blanks you’re so limited to prints, you can’t include anything functional in your designs that can give you a key selling point”.
Words, Pictures, Styled By-Rosa Macvicar Modeled By- George Currell
Scrolling past the multitudes of small businesses on tiktok is all well and good, but what are the ins and outs of what actually goes into a brand? George Currell, founder of streetwear brand Visionary Studios tells us what goes on behind the scenes.
“This won’t be my firST and won’t be my last” In the future we can definitely expect to see more from Visionary Studios “ This won’t be my first and won’t be my last [brand]”, stepping away from typical streetwear logomania is something George is keen to do “I’d rather do themed capsules, brands get washed so quickly, the people I know their favourite tees usually aren’t branded” With an increasing market for archive fashion and bespoke pieces, exclusivity is certainly a selling point to consider in the future. You can find George’s work on wwww.visionairystudios. com/shop or @visionarystudiosuk on Instagram.
S
process to just going to your mates for inspiration is a step towards more authentic, slow fashion .
“MY MUM USED TO HELP ME PACK ORDERS”
“Most of the work is done by myself except for the help of two of my mates, it’s all pretty spontaneous when we work though because we’re actually friends, it’s not just people going ‘hey I fuck with your stuff lets link and build’, the best way to work is with your mates, if you can work with your mates that is.” Outsourcing can often cause complications when trying to build something on your own, using your existing connections appears to be a much more organic and reliable method of manufacturing, especially if your building a brand without any existing capital. “As you you get older there’s more things to pay for, more issues in the process, making clothes can get quite expensive… I started reselling Supreme and charity shopping to generate capital for it, my mum even used to help me with packing orders”

Reselling repertoire You’ve probably heard the term ‘reseller’ floating around a lot in the past year or 2. its a practice that has been happening for years but has struck up popularity with the sneaker and streetwear world. Reselling is the legal practice of buying an item and selling it on for a profit. Some people are able to sell items for more than 3x retail! Today I will be speaking with Joseph who is apart of a group of friends that resell with eachother. Their company is called Dunk Dealers!
What is a day like in reselling? Well it really depends on the day, a lot of the time shoes release mainly in the week. On a Sunday rarely anything releases but even on the quiet days there’s stuff to do. A lot of time goes into researching when and where items are released and making sure you are prepared with accounts for the websites on which they’re releasing. There’s constantly new things to learn as methods change but overall it’s just a lot of time online.
Is it a hard job? I wouldn’t say it’s hard but when you’re starting off, there’s a lot of information to learn and taking it to a level where you’re earning enough to live on takes full focus and a lot of dedication.
What are the most weird items you resold? Can reselling be a main source of income? Definitely. I know of teenagers who have made 6 figures a year mainly by reselling. At that level it’s more than just selling individual shoes. People can make money by creating groups focused on distributing information or by coding bots that automatically purchase shoes when they’re released on the websites. Like in any industry, the most successful people are those who innovate and don’t follow the crowd.
Whats the most fun part of being a reseller? Like any job I think the monetary gains bring a lot of satisfaction but beyond that I think seeing how trends change over time is quite interesting and also seeing how temporary some trends can be makes you appreciate that the latest releases aren’t always what are coolest.

Probably computer graphics cards or Disney toys. I don’t think most people would imagine either would sell for above retail price.
Do you really think its ethical? Some say it takes away accesibility. I think some items are unethical to resell. For example at the start of the pandemic some people were buying masks from China and selling them at a huge markup. Also, more recently a few people were reselling laceless shoes designed for those with cerebral palsy. Anything that involves health or that’s meant for disadvantaged people I avoid however most items that people resell tend to be more luxury goods. It’s not necessary for people to have the latest Jordan and due to the sneaker culture, limited shoes will always sell out so if I stop selling them, someone else will instead.

The OUAI is her most successful and well known business, boasting a variety of haircare, perfumes, hand, body and travel essentials. The hard to pronounce brand OUAI (correct pronounciation being “way”) is slang for the French ‘oui’; “I wanted it to be a conversation piece, so you can be the person at lunch correcting your friends on the pronunciation,” says Atkin. Pretty smart business move if you ask us! The websites mantra is cool girl style, and how to achieve this. On the history and philosophy page of the website it says “start saying yes to: being better IRL than on Instagram, Letting for of unrealistic expectations, and embracing imperfections” so we can tell from this that we like this brands vibe, its very cool girl insta, undone, but it also stands for something. We believe this is whats essential to starting and maintaining a successful, reputable business. The founder Jen says “I get it. I am an overstimulated consumer myself. I’ve used every hair product on the market and spent years talking to my clients and social followers about their hair. I’ve struggled to find a haircare brand that my friends and I could relate to. It was my goal to take these conversations and create the first socially-connected haircare brand.” Along with owning OUAI, Jen also owns Mane Addicts, which a hub for all things hair: “Founded by Jen Atkin, Mane Addicts is the THE destination and leading digital hair community that gives access to the world’s top talent for both hairstylists and consumers. We feature the best products on the market and instructional how-to videos, along with professional profiles, original content and cutting-edge education all delivered to our audience via our cool, modern voice. From growing up in a conservative Mormon community, where girls were discouraged from pursuing their ambitions, to striking out on her own and finding success on the celebrity style circuit, to building the cult-status brand OUAI—Jen reveals with refreshing candor, the lessons, mistakes, and memorable moments that have paved her road to success. Jen also offers insight into the values that have allowed her to thrive in the modern digital landscape, including the importance of creating authentic content, investing in community, and building social conscious into the ethos of a business. We really recommend this book to our budding business women. We all know its harder as a woman to earn respect as business people, which should never be the case, but in todays climate is the case. With the beauty business taking a major knock during the pandemic, Carbon spoke to Jolie Nubani, Co-Founder of Shade M Beauty, about how her brand rode the Covid storm.
Because we’re a makeup brand and we only had one product range, which was matte liquid lipsticks, our biggest challenge was people were not wearing makeup during Covid, especially when it came to everyone wearing masks. It became a major issue to convince people to continue purchasing from us. Another challenge we faced was teaching people that they could still wear our lipsticks under their masks and encouraging them to wear our products on their zoom calls and work calls from home. We wanted to try and keep our customers excited to wear the lipsticks to make them look and feel good sat at home.
What advice would you give to any brands struggling to succeed post pandemic? I would say to figure out how to cut back on as many expenses as you can, and to run your business for as little as possible to really optimise and save on where you’re spending your resources. My second piece of advice would have to be to find a way to make your product relevant again to everyone’s lives as they re-enter society and re-acclimatise to normal everyday life. Help your customers to remember what and how your products can work for them and be a good addition to their lives.
What would you say was the biggest factor when it comes to your continued success post pandemic? Our biggest success post pandemic has definitely come from working with and alongside influencers and getting our products onto affiliate programmes such as Liketoknowit. The influencers we work with can share their links, enabling their followers to shop with us with ease and earning commission off of the products sold.
How do you plan on staying relevant and growing further as we approach 2 years since COVID-19 hit? We’re definitely trying to fundraise more and be able to create new products post pandemic so that we stay relevant to people’s needs and what they’re after from a makeup product. That’s our biggest objective post covid. Another way we’re trying to stay relevant is by figuring out what kind of products people will be looking for next. We’re trying to create what their needs are for the future rather than what they are right now, being more mindful and creative when it comes to product development and creation.

Dr. Dawnn Karen:
Fashion psychology Dr. Dawnn Karen is the founder of fashion psychology, specifically the fashion psychology institute. The institute holds online classes for students and Dr. Dawnn Karen herself, is the author of ‘Dress your best life’, a must How would you define fashion psychology? The formal definition is the study and treatment of how colour, image, style, shape and beauty affects human behaviour, while addressing cultural norms and cultural sensitivities. So as a woman of colour, I think it’s very important to highlight the cultural norms and the cultural sensitivities within fashion psychology because those do play a role in how you’re being perceived by the outside world. But the informal definition is, the science behind why we wear what we wear or styling from the inside out. The formal definition is the study and treatment of how colour, image, style, shape and beauty affects human behaviour, while addressing cultural norms and cultural sensitivities. But the informal definition is, the science behind why we wear what we wear or styling from the inside out. When did you decide fashion psychology was the career path for you? I created this about 11 years ago. I was attending a university to be a traditional psychologist and I created it. I actually bought it to the Fashion Institute of Technology, someone there actually went on sabbatical and then bought my proposal from there to London college of fashion (LCF.) And someone basically stole my entire intellectual property. So it was really terrible. But as a woman of colour, I felt like I didn’t have a voice, I felt disempowered. And so it’s only recently, in 2020, the person that ended up stealing it stepped down from LCF, because the students there were figuring it out. Like I didn’t need to have to say anything. They actually came and told me but I knew the whole time. So, I guess then, you know how the universe works out, so I’m just happy I’m getting the recognition. Even though Carbon doesn’t know the backstory you recognise this is the founder. So I’m really happy just to be interviewed by you Carbon.

you are in? Yeah, I’ve been through a lot of racism. I hate to say that but I’ve been through a lot of racism and ageism, so I’ve been discriminated against a lot. It came out in the New York Times in 2020. There’s an article, the beginning of the title says upheaval at the Fashion Institute of Technology. My name and my face is in the article, and the chronicles of discrimination that I faced. Has your career been impacted by the pandemic? Believe it or not, I was actually working like this like before the pandemic. So I was already, just like being an innovator and a pioneer, several years ahead. Yeah, I was already doing like teletherapy with my clients like, we were talking on the phone or we were talking on at the time, I think what was hot was like Skype or FaceTime. So I was already doing this type of work with my clients and then students. I had students at the Fashion psychology Institute, so I really made that school online. So honestly, the pandemic didn’t really shift anything for me because I was already like lightyears ahead. The only thing is, during the pandemic, my work just increased. how would you say it increased? So I have more clients, I have more students, I have more media interviews. My book actually came out during the pandemic, so I was doing a lot of speaking engagements around the world. Even though I was like in my home though, so yeah, my my work just really increased because my book my book came out around that time too.
About your book, do you believe that the content would have changed if it was written today? -Oh no, no. That’s the whole point when I was saying, I have to be lightyears ahead so I was already thinking ahead, now granted I had no idea we were gonna have a pandemic, but I was already thinking like that. So like, obviously with black lives matter that happened globally, people become more conscious of racism and discrimination. I have things like that in the book. I Have things like how to improve your mood in there. So you can imagine, being ahead, and people not understanding the concepts like years ago. So I was happy when I got a publisher because I’m signed to Penguin, Random House, UK, and then I’m signed to Hachette here in the US. I was happy for my publishers to actually believe in what I was saying, even though I was like, years ahead like they could see it. So the thing is, I was talking about some of these things then, but now the pandemic hit, people actually are like, oh, like they believe me now.
Would you say that fashion psychology has helped you as an individual? - So my my number one theory that I utilise is mood enhancement dress, I nicknamed it dopamine dressing, being the creator. Which is dressing to optimise your mood or uplift your mood. So that’s my number one thing that I use, but I think one that I use that I don’t even really pay attention to is the theory called Fashion situational code switching, and it’s just literally how it sounds fashion situational code switching. It’s basically when you change your dress based off your social situation. So like, if I’m going to miss my family, maybe I’m not going to dress as glamorous as I usually do. So I think I practised that a lot and I just don’t realise it, but those are like the two theories that I utilise every day with myself.
A lot of our readers are generation Z, would you say your message would help increase their mental health? The people that I actually made my field for was this generation and younger because you get it. The ‘dinosaurs’ didn’t really believe me.
What impact do you believe the pandemic has had on consumers behaviour? Yeah, people are paying a lot of attention to what they wear. I have a chapter in my book, It’s called ‘are you dressing for yourself or for someone else?’ And I feel like pre pandemic, people are dressing for someone else. Post pandemic, I feel like now people are dressing for themselves. Before they were seeking external validation, now they look to themselves for that internal validation. I feel like because I mean that we spent like a year and a half like inside so they just focus on themselves now like what do I want to wear? How do I want to look? How does this make me feel as opposed to dressing for others?
What do you believe this means for brands? Brands have to pay attention to mental health, they have to incorporate it more. They can’t just like gloss over it just like how they had to start incorporating eco friendly or eco conscious like making sure their things are made like in a principled manner. I feel like now it’s like very similar like the sustainability factor like now they have to have like a mental health factor and I’m excited about that because I’ve been talking about this forever. I think the pandemic like finally shifted the consciousness of the people and like now they get it.
Would you say your book has positively impacted
Do you believe standards have eased?
your amount of followers and their understanding?
There has been anxiety, like, are we going to go back into another lockdown, but I don’t feel like they’re putting pressure on themselves. I just feel like maybe they’re under like they are under post pandemic traumatic stress disorder. If that’s what the pressure there’s any pressure that they thought I think it’s just post pandemic stress.
Oh yeah, definitely a lot of followers. I get a lot of fan mail. My book is in five languages. Even if you go on justyourbest life.com you’ll see all the retailors. Ukrainian Czech, Russian, Spanish, English, and I’m hoping to get it in French and Mandarin eventually, it was important for me to have a more global appeal. But I would say yes my followers did increase.

Interview with a tattoo apprentice, now junior artist Cristina Ribeiro. If you`re thinking about getting into the tattoo industry here is a little insight from her point of view.
1.Let`s start by introducing yourself! I was born in Portugal, Porto. I lived there until I was eighteen years old, and then I came here to Southampton to study at Solent University. I studied digital animation which I liked a lot at the beginning but during uni I realised that it`s not quite for me but regardless of that I ended up getting my degree.
2.So art has always been in your life, right?
Written by: Alexandra Toth
I’m sure it has. In school back in Portugal you have to choose the area that you would like to study. My dad always wanted me to be a doctor or engineer. I did a year in science, I hated it, made sure I failed so I could pursuit arts instead. I got into one of the best public arts school in my home town. It was an amazing and intense three years of my life. After I finished high school I wasn`t sure which direction I wanted to go, I just knew that I want to try new things and be independent like most people at 18 years old so I decided to apply to university in England and that`s what got me here, to Southampton.

CARBON - BEAUTY
3.Have you always known that you wanted to work in arts or be a tattoo artist at all? Since the beginning it was always art for me. Of course, when I was a kid, I would say I want to be a vet but whenever somebody gave me a pen and paper I was in my own world and imagination. After I came here during uni, and even after uni I worked loads of different jobs, but I never really found joy in them. Even though I`m just a “baby” in my journey as a tattoo artist I can finally say I love what I`m doing and I can actually see myself doing it for the long term.
4.What do you like most about it? I like that it`s true art but you still meet and work with so many different people. Not every day is the same, you always see and hear new ideas, tattoo different stories, it`s a new challenge every day. Obviously as a junior artist I still struggle with certain things but it`s all about learning like in every job and profession. Also, when I see people around with my work on them is such a great feeling. Knowing it means something to them and we could both be a part of each other’s journey is amazing to me.
5.How is your progress going? What styles are you tapping into? At the moment I do whatever I can basically. I want to try different stuff, I`m still in the progress obviously. I think my style is more illustrative, which is not too surprising considering my digital animation background. I`ve been doing some bits of realism and tribal tattoos so I`m slowly tapping into different things. I have good days and bad days just like in any industry, the only thing that, this one is a little bit more permanent, and you can`t always fix mistakes that easy. I haven`t yet made a mistake that is not fixable but it`s still frustrating when you go home, look at the picture and see what I could`ve done differently. Luckily, my mentors Casper and Martin Redmer are always there for me whether to say I did a great job or `okay you messed this up here`s how you fix it`.

6.Tell me a little bit about the shop you work at. How did you end up there? It`s been a long journey to get here. I visited other tattoo studios just to see the environment, but I never gave my portfolio to any of those shops. I wanted it to feel natural for me to be there, in a place where people actually care to teach me and not just consider me as someone who`s helping out in the shop. Redmer Ink tattoo studio uploaded to Instagram that they were looking for tattoo apprentices, so I took the opportunity and applied. I came to the shop which I already really liked, it was very clean, and the guys were great to me as well. Not long after, lockdown happened so I had to put this project on pause. After the lockdown they put up the same post again, so I applied. I filled out the form, left my portfolio with them and after that it was just waiting for a yes or no. On Halloween night, nearly a year ago I got the call from them that they`re want me as an apprentice so that night I went out very happily to celebrate. Since then, I`m here, it`s a good environment to be in. We all get along, joke around, and like to spend time together as it should be.
8. What is the most stressful part? Starting, meeting the person I don`t know and planning everything out. Also, when the person I`m tattooing has little pain tolerance and moving too much, but I`m sure that with experience I`ll learn how to deal with all of that.
9. What is your inspiration? Where is your art coming from? It comes on a day-to-day basis, by meeting people, different personalities. For example, if I`m sitting on the bus and see a person with a very nice face or I see something that stands out, I just grab a pen and paper and turn it into my own. There`s a Portuguese rapper, Sam the Kid that inspires me as well. He started from nothing and everything he`s done so far was all by himself and it reminds me that I came here on my own and I must work hard for what I want to achieve.
10. What are your experiences on being the only women artist in the studio? Do you already have any insights on being a woman in the industry itself? I can`t speak for the whole industry because I haven`t been the part of it for a very long time. With being the only women in this shop, I don`t have any bad experiences, they treat me equally as good as they treat everybody else.
from the customer`s side?
7.How did you start and how was your first tattoo? I started tattooing on melons, fake skin, and I had to do a lot of drawing. I slowly started picking up stuff from all the other artists. I was just trying to watch and absorb everything. About my first tattoo…I was stressing out two days prior. My first victim was my boyfriend Andre, I tattooed a barber knife on his leg, I was shaking so much that if you look at the tattoo closely you can see a little dot next to it which is not supposed to be there. I did okay for a first tattoo though. He already has half of his leg done by me since then so it`s a progress for both of us.
No bad experiences from that side either so far. I mostly book with people that I already know or people that are friends of friends, so they already know what to expect from me. But even if I tattoo complete strangers, they also know what to expect from me because all my work is on social media. That is how people can book with me as well. My Instagram is @tiny_needlez where everybody can check out my work and if they like it, they can make the booking through DM.
11. What advice would you give to people who are thinking about joining the industry? Based on my experiences so far, just like in every industry it`s hard to start if you`re doubting yourself too much. Believe in yourself, do the work, put the effort in. Not everybody will like your work all the time and that`s okay. Just work hard and you`ll get recognised. Make sure you take time for yourself though! It`s not always about work.

THE GREATEST S B A L L O C T S I T R A THIS YEAR Continuing on from 2020 , 2021 has brought out many amazing collabora-
tions from artists. Big celebrities have collabed which have sent their fans into a daze. Even celebrities you wouldn’t even have dreamed of have collabed. The songs they have released have all been huge hits this year and counting. With the effects from the pandemic, artists had to find other routes to promote their songs whether it be through Tiktok, shocking music videos or with other artists. Here are some of the biggest collabs from this year so far.
unexpected collabs
1 Ariana Grande - 34+35 (Remix) ft. Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion - This remix was released 15th Jan with an additional music video releasing a month later. The remix was amazing carrying 3 great top female artists at the moment. 2
Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, Silk Sonic - Leave the Door Open - This amazing hit song came out 5th March and had all the vibes and feels you could ask for. Bruno Mars blended perfectly well with Silk Sonic. There was also lots of black female representation. 3 Maroon 5 - Beautiful Mistakes ft. Megan Thee Stallion - Released 11th March, no one would’ve expected a collab such as this one. With both artists’ vibes being completely different, they managed to flow so well together in this hit song and fun music video. 4 Justin Bieber - Peaches ft. Daniel Caesar, Giveon - Released 19th March, this song was a huge hit throughout spring/ summer and still continues to be on replay all throughout the year. The 3 did that. 5 Doja Cat - Kiss Me More ft. SZA - Released 9th April, this hit pop song quickly became a cult favourite on Tiktok and everywhere else. Both Doja Cat and Sza looked absolutely stunning along with the pretty pink Planet Her aesthetics. 6 The Weeknd & Ariana Grande - Save Your Tears (Remix) - This great pop duo came to bless our ears once again with a new collaboration on The Weeknd’s song Save Your Tears. Released on 23rd April, Ariana’s vocals on this song were God sent in the song. We hope for more magic from these two in the future.
7 Doja Cat, The Weeknd - You Right - These two came together to collaborate on Doja’s ‘Planet Her’ album and made literal magic. A beautiful song with an equally beautiful music video on top of that. The Weeknd’s verse on the song was amazing. The music video was released on the 25th of June, and was one of the two music videos fans got from the album. 8
Normani - Wild Side ft. Cardi B - The song was released on 16th July and fans went into a frenzy. It has been so long since Normani has released a single. There was a lot of hard choreography in the MV that impressed many fans too. Cardi B’s feature did not disappoint and was wholesome because of the cameo normani had made in her ‘WAP’ MV. 9 BTS Butter (feat. Megan Thee Stallion) - Probably the most unexpected collab of the whole year has to be this summer hit. Megan did what had to be done on her featured verse in BTS’ summer song ‘Butter’. The Collaboration between the biggest kpop stars and a rapper was so wholesome. Fans absolutely loved the remix and are still bumping to it. We hope for more cultural collabs like these in the future. 10 Coldplay X BTS - My Universe - This alternative/indie song was released 29 Sept 2021 and blew up immedietely. It was an amazing crossover with these two popular boy groupsThis collab has been anticipated for since February of this year when BTS covered their song “Fix You“. Coldplay loved the cover and the two groups got together to make a song together. The song is both touching and meaniful with music being represented as something sentimenental. The mix of english and korean is absolutely beautiful to the ears.

Lil Nas X
MONTERO - The Debut Album
Although Lil Nas X made a legion of Tik Tok fans very happy, the release of his debut album wasn’t warmly received by everyone, especially among many conservative critics. The “issue” was with his use of clear religious disregard. The majority of critiqued artists move on from critics and controversy but the rapper decided to reply to haters on Twitter, he said: “I spent my entire teenage years hating myself because of the shit y’all preached would happen to me because I was gay,” “So I hope u are mad, stay mad, feel the same anger you teach us to have towards ourselves.” Lil Nas X celebrates and is proud of being an unashamedly Black, queer artist who is reaching mainstream success. “People will be angry, they will say I’m pushing an agenda. But the truth is, I am. The agenda to make people stay the fuck out of other people’s lives and stop dictating who they should be.” There is a lot of hidden messages inside each song and lyric in “Montero” but Lil Nas X’s true intention is to reach out to kids that are just like he was and tell them that they can fight back, embrace who they are and love whoever they want to love. Who doesn’t love it when a new album comes out? When it’s one of our favourite musicians it makes it that bit better. To make things easier for you, we’ve compacted a collection of new albums so that you know all the latest hits to listen to!
ADELE ‘30’
Now we can all admit we love Adele, who took a break from releasing music for some time now but lucky for us she’s got a new album out called ‘30’. She’d previously released the lead single ‘Easy On Me’ which had people in their feelings whilst also breaking streaming records. Aswell as the album, Adele has also got two big headline shows in Hyde Park on 1-2 July. Adele’s albums are always popular amongst her fans and others, no matter how old they get people always seem to love them.
Adele is very well known for having very meaningful lyrics. Every sentence has meaning and that’s why when you listen to each song on her album, every single one has a deeper meaning behing it that is very personal to her and she uses that to create her music. The singer finalized her divorce to ex-husband ‘Simon Konecki ‘ back in January. This album in particular is about her divorce. There are many people that can relate to the process of a divorce, emotionally. Adele’s listeners are able to listen to the lyrics and interpret them whilst some are listening and re-living the emotions. The album is powerful. The album consists of the 12 following songs: 1. Strangers by Nature 2. Easy on Me 3. My Little Love 4. Cry Your Heart Out 5. Oh My God 6. Can I Get It 7. I Drink Wine 8. All Night Parking (With Erroll Garner) Interlude 9. Woman Like Me 10. Hold On 11. To Be Loved 12. Love Is a Game Bonus Tracks: 13. Wild Wild West 14. Can’t Be Together 15. Easy on Me (With Chris Stapleton)

LITTLE MIX ‘BETWEEN US’
As you may be aware, in December 2020 Jesy Nelson decided to leave Little mix and take on her own solo career. This album has been the first since and it’s safe to say it’s been a hit. In late October/early November Nelson had been in the middle of getting cancelled through her ignorance towards the ethnic minority and trying to play the victim. Since the scandal Little Mix fans have began to start to form a dislike towards Jesy, making their album even more popular. The album is a great listen and considering they’ve lost a member of the group, the album is doing very well for itself.
TAYLOR SWIFT ‘RED’ (TAYLORS’ VERSION)
Taylor’s new album is a bit different to the rest. It’s actually just a re-recording of her very popular album ‘Red’ which was released in 2012. This is the second album that Taylor has re-recorded. The reason behind why she wanted to re-record her albums was because she wanted to be in charge of her own music and not by a record label. She’s re-making them in her own way how she would’ve wanted to from the beginning but never got to because of big music management. Swift decided she would re-record the albums that were recorded under Big Machine Records but do it in her own way this time instead of other people telling her she can only do it one way and one way only.

TISSUES TOP 6 FILMS TO GET YOU IN YOUR FEELS
We’re all guilty of getting deep in our feelings every now and again and what’s more perfect than a film to get our emotions on the go. These are just a handful of the top films for getting feelings flowing, so get cosy, grab the tissue box and preapre for a rollercoaster of emotions.
Romance Films
Me Before you
Although not being a new film, the 2016 romantic drama has people clutching the tissue boxes. The film starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin is a complete rollercoaster of emotions. One minute you’re happy and the next you’re in tears. The movie involves sensitive subjects but portrays it so perfectlly, that it will make you ball like a baby and gets you right down into those feels. It deals with subjects such as depression and suicide which for some can be a very sensitive subject but makes the film so beautiful that you just can’t help but love it.
UP
ANIMATION
This animated film is popular with many because it is the type of film where you get very emotionally attatched with the characters. Even though it’s animated as soon as they explain his story, you start to empathise and emotions start flowing. As the film progresses you get even more attatched to the characters and want the best for them. It may be a film ‘targeted towards children’ but there was a deeper message that the director revealed in an interview in which he stated ‘the message of the film is that the real adventure of life is the relationship we have with other people, and it’s so easy to lose sight of the things we have and the people that are around us until they are gone.’
inside out
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS The teen romance gets everyone in their feels, it’s hard not to. The film is about two unwell teenagers who meet at a cancer support group. The two share lots in common and almost immedietly you begin to love the two of them together. They share the same intrests, make eachother happy and dont let their illness ruin their attitude and love towards one another. This film is one to make you feel grateful, but also gives an insight of what life can be like for people that have to suffer with terminal illness’.
Inside out is a film involving a young girl who has her emotions controlled by little ‘people’ in her brain, they essentially are her emotions. They are able to keep her memories and view them or even control her movements. When the stress of moving house causes problems her emotions in her brain, her memories start to get effected and Joy and Sadness have to go on a big adventure to try and get them back without putting Riley at risk. Throughout this journey you come across new characters to form emotional bonds with and overall this entire movie is a complete rollercoaster of emotions. It’s a great watch because it gets you thinking back to your childhood and although again being a film ‘targeted towards children’ there are many components of the film that are more for the older audience that children wouldn’t necessarily watch.
AND TV crime documentaries
Blackfish If you love a good documentary then you might already know ‘Blackfish’. This documentary opened people’s eyes and changed how people view SeaWorld. The rate of people that attend to the ‘zoo’ has dropped by an enormous amount. Out of all animal documentaries, Blackfish is one of the most well known. The movie focuses on the ocras killer whales that are kept captive in SeaWorld. There is a lot of controversy about an ocra that killed three people. However, the movie provides multiple sourses of evidence to show that because of the abuse it had recieved in his life it has all led up to him lashing out and killing the three people. Blackfish is a great watch if you want to get more insight into the reality of the animal world but be prepared for tears as it’s not always an easy watch.
Dear Zachary:A Letter To a son about His Father This documentary was actually made for a son whos father was murdered. The whole point of the documentary was to show the son, Zachary, what his father was like through interviews that were had with his family and friends about him. However, what makes this documentary more upsetting is that there is a very unexpected twist in which will make your toes curl and emotions rise. To this day, this movie is known as one of the best crime documentaries out there because it puts the victims at the front and centre rather than the murderer.
drama
The Notebook The romantic drama never fails to bring people to tears no matter how tough you think you may be. The film starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams is full of different emotions. If you’re wanting a big cry just put this film on! It will have you falling in love with the storyline in the first 10 minutes. The relationship these two characters hold are ones that are the most beautiful and most people’s typical ‘dream romance story’. The love they share for eachother is so strong that even that alone is enough to make you want to start the waterworks. Their love is so strong but looked down upon because of their financial differences and after they go their seperate ways, everything begins to take a turn and becaomes a reality that true love really does let you find your way back to one another.
The Pursuit of Happyness
Words and design by: Aiysha Hussain
Life isn’t easy for Chris Gardner. He is a single father with a job that’s not earning him enough money, evicted from their apartment he and his son find themselves with no money and no home. He ends up finding an internship that doesn’t pay, but has the motivation to keep going because he knows he has to provide for his son and make something of his life. they move from shelter to shelter but he doesnt give up and continues to strive for a better life for him and his son. This film will be sure to bring in the waterworks as they are very loveable characters in this film and when everything just seems to keep going wrong he doesn’t stop tyring. This is the perfect film to sit cozy and get emotional over, so what are you waiting for? Go for it!

Girls Bathroom
meet the influencers behind the girls bathroom; the podcast that navigates relationships, friendships, business and everything inbetween. Podcasts are something that just about every influencer or celebrity has nowadays, like makeup or skincare brands. However, the podcast world doesn’t get over saturated like the beauty and fashion industry because of how much a podcast is centered around personality and how niche you can make your brand of podcast. The Girls Bathroom is a podcast by Youtubers and Insta girls Sophia and Cinzia, which explores friendship, relationships, growth and career topics. The format of the podcast is an agony aunt system; the listeners email in their dilemmas every week and the girls answer a select few each podcast. A really successful element to the podcast is the idea that the dilemmas are all real and real people are going through it, which allows other listeners to relate and empathise with eachother
‘The Girls Bathroom is a place we all know to be full of girl chat and gossip, the place we often confide in girls we’ve never even met before!’ Reads the intro to the podcast on streaming service Spotify. The girls met at primary school, and went through the trials and tribulations of school together, which are often reminisced about over the podcast; offering advice to young adults navigating their way through sixth form. In their interview with ‘Heat’ the dynamic duo say ‘I don’t know what the secret to a long friendship is? What’s the secret? I feel like it’s because when we met we were younger’ which Cinzia replies with ‘I think so. It’s much harder as adults to maintain and form a friendship’
‘is the idea that the dilemmas are all real and real people are going through it, which allows other listeners to relate and empathise with each other’
Words and design by: Ellie Atherley
The girls bathroom is a relatable, funny podcast where the girls share their own problems, being more than open with their listeners
The girls spoke in a recent interview with ‘Heat’ on why they think the podcast is successful, recently after celebrating 10 million downloads; they said ‘its actually crazy... actually crazy’
t s a c d o P ‘I think its because we’ve had these discussions ourselves like if Sophia had a boy problem or friend problem or if I had a boy problem , I’d come to Sophia and literally ask her. So its kind of like we’re all just friends and share advice and dillemmas and just try and get through it’
“So it’s kind of like we’re all just friends and share advice and dilemmas and just try and get through it” The girls are now moving towards franchising the Girls Bathroom brand with the addition of the clothing collections and recently brought out a card game, both of which sold out. The podcast looks as though its set to do nothing but rise with recent collaberations such as joining the ‘Private Parts’ podcast hosted by Jamie Laing, and their most recent guest Melissa’s Wardrobe who is a celebrity stylist and entrepeneur. The girls always know who and what topics are going to please their listeners down to the ground!!

HOUSE OF
he House of Gucci tells the story of how Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci (portrayed by Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, respectivey) plotted to kill her husband, the grandson of infamous fashion designr Guccio Gucci. The much-anticipated film will be hitting cinemas at the nd of November this year, with the tagline “A legacy worth killing for.” he movie was filmed across Florence and Tuscany, paying homage to the ashion houses’ family roots. Casting was a long process, with Angelina olie, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Margot Robbie and Natalie Portman initially being considered for Lady Gaga’s role of Patriia Reggiani. After the release of the first official trailer for the film, a lip from it went viral on Tik Tok, showcasing Lady Gaga’s attempt at an talian accent. Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, has italian oots herself, with many therefore believing that this role was made for her. Comments about her accent are mixed, however, with many claiming he sounds Russian instead, and others exclaiming how excited they are o see her in this new role. Alongside Lady Gaga, are many other famous names within the industry such as Jared Leto as Paulo Gucci, Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci, Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci and Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci. But what exactly is the murderous past of this famous fashion house? Patrizia Martinelli met the heir to the Gucci house Maurizio in 1970, and hey married two years later. However, they divorced 24 years later. Alhough legally she was no longer allowed to use the Gucci surname, she ontinued to do so, saying “I still feel like a Gucci – in fact, the most Gucci of them all.” On the 27th March 1995, Patrizia wrote in her diary one word;
“Spanning three decades of love, betrayal, revenge,
and ultimately murder, we see what a name means, what it’s worth, and how far a family will go for control.” - IMDB
“p an Pa di be
paradeisos”, the Greek word for paradise. On this day, Maurizio was shot nd killed by a hitman just outside his office. Around two whole years later, atrizia was arrested, and the trial garned immense interest from the meia, who nicknamed her “The Black Widow.” The hitman was found to have een hired through a close friend of hers. The trial resulted in a 26 year
sentence, although Patrizia only served 18 years, due to good behaviour. So how exactly do the Gucci family feel about this upcoming film? Well, not great... Maurizio’s second cousin, Patricia stated on behalf of the Gucci family to the Associated press that they were “truly disappointed” by the film. Nevertheless, interest in the film is growing exponentially, and the public’s thirst for a juicy murder movie filled with sex, gossip and some of the world’s most extravagant outfits is still looking to be quenched. In March earlier this year, Patrizia praised the casting of Lady Gaga in the film, admitting that she looks like her, but also expressed annoyance that Gaga did not meet with her before accepting the role. Fans are impatiently waiting to see if she will play Patrizia justice, and some see an Oscar or two on the horizon...

The Roaring twenties are officially back into full swing, looking back the fashion choices are different in the extreme. In 2021 our going out fits seem to be a mishmash of various different decades and micro trends. Halter neck influence from the 90s/2000s, prints inspired by the 60s/70s, tanned skin, blown out hair, long lashes and full lips. The 20s seem to be in stark contrast. The flapper girl fashion then was somewhat scandalous as it was seen as one of the first steps after WW1 to women’s liberation from the patriarchy. Hemlines and hair got shorter, flashy dresses and feathers with extravagant jewelry was introduced (for those who could afford it). Dresses didn’t just get shorter for political defiance however, it was also for dancing. At the time the
Charleston had become very popular, and long restrictive dresses were just no good for moving in. Restrictive corsets also proved to be a big issue, so it was in 1923 when Coco Chanel introduced the ‘garçonne look’ – higher hemlines, dropped waists and straight sleeveless tops. This created the signature boxy silhouette that we associate with the 1920s today.
Art and fashion often coincide as movements and trends tend to stem from real word issues and cultural influences. Naturally the art of the 1920s also influenced the flapper style. Art Deco was popular at the time, some of it’s key themes were progressive modernity, luxury & glamour and sports & leisure, all of which were shared with the flapper style. Moving away from the prudish Victorian ideal of femininity was important when the style developed, the life style of the flapper girl was reflected in the way she dressed. Women could now drink and smoke freely, learn to drive be promiscuous if they choose to be (however not without stigma unfortunately). Makeup was dramatic and glamorous, made to last all night and be noticeable, unlike the natural beauty of the demure Victorian lady. Faces were pale and powdered with rouged cheeks, small painted lips and criminally thin eyebrows – their faces and bodies became the art canvas.
THE ROARING 20sTHEN VERSUS NOW So what has changed one hundred years later? In many ways we’ve carried on the legacy. Hemlines have gotten shorter, but dresses are no longer the only option, we have the freedom to choose an extreme feminine silhouette or a more gender neutral one. The party girl aesthetic is glamourized and sought after by many and makeup trends yoyo between dramatic and natural. Whilst dancing may not be the main priority when we dress to go out now, dresses are still made to be relatively comfortable and easy to move in. Unfortunately elbow length gloves and feather headbands have gone out of fashion, but maybe the 2020s will surprise us.

TAKE A TRIP TO ICELAND...
Now that we’re in winter and the opportunity for a warm close-to-home holiday has gone, going on a “winter” holiday to somewhere more on the chilly side might be for you. A top destination for winter breaks at the moment is Iceland, only a 3-hour flight away from the UK. It truly is a magical country, as soon as you get off the plane you will be astounded by its natural beauty.

One of the first things on your sight seeing list should be the Blue Lagoon. It will relax you like no Spa ever could with the water temperature in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon averaging at 98–102 °F. The warm waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur, bathing in it is reputed to help some people suffering from skin diseases such as psoriasis thanks to its properties. The Blue Lagoon is famous for its incredible skin treatment, and a big part of this is the products it provides. In the lagoon itself, all guests are treated to the silica mud mask, an algae mask can also be purchased if you fancy it.
Secondly, you need to pay Geysirs a visit. Geysir is a famous hot spring in the geothermal area of Haukadalur Valley, found in south-west Iceland. There are boiling mud pits, exploding geysirs and the lively Strokkur which spouts water 100 ft into the air every few minutes. Generally associated with areas that have seen past volcanic activity, the spouting action is caused by the sudden release of pressure that has been confining near-boiling water in deep, narrow conduits beneath a geysir. This is a is a once in a lifetime experience, it’ll truly leave you stunned
It goes without saying that the Northern lights are a must see. Whilst patience and a certain level of endurance may be required for this one, it’s worth it. The best time to view the lights is 10pm to 2am from September to March as that’s when the nights are longest and the sky is at it’s darkest and clearest. For a clear view of them there also needs to be solar flares present on the sun or solar wind (prepare for the sciencey bit) the Aurora Borealis happens when particles from the sun enter the earths atmosphere and collide with gas atoms The Northern Lights occur high above the surface of the earth where the atmosphere has become extremely thin, at an altitude of 100-250 km. They are truly stunning.
Last but not least is Gullfoos Waterfall. Gullfoss is located in the heart of the famous Golden Circle in Haukadalur, South Iceland about 107 km (66,4 mi) from Reykjavík. There is a trail around the Gullfoss Waterfall so you can see the fall from many angles and heights. Around 1 hour is more than enough to enjoy it fully and if you get hungry, there’s a cafe and a visitor centre nearby. It’s not the biggest one in Iceland but it’s one of the most popular. Scientifically, there are claims that the concentrated amount of negative ions found in waterfalls somehow increase serotonin levels, which ultimately helps our mood. So, a visit to a waterfall will almost definately put a smile on your face.
Iceland is a place of surreal beauty and is somewhere everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime, you wont regret it.
A G N U H These Hungarian designers and brands are knocking on international doors. In August 2018 the Hungarian Fashion & Design Agency and Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (National Chamber of Italian Fashion) signed a strategic agreement together to support Hungarian talents who are entering the international field. The strongest point of this partnership is the participation in Milan Fashion Week where these brands are provided the opportunity to get their big break by showcasing their talent to international audiences.

Her multicultural upbringing is a major source of inspiration for her with the contrast in heritage being the focal point in a lot of Popradi’s designs. Why is Budapest a go to destination for Gen-Z and millenials? Back in the day Budapest was pushed to the side and ignored but for quite a few years, now it’s a hotspot for young travellers from all over Europe. The city is a beautiful mismatch of contradictions. The Danube River splits the city in half, creating two sides: Buda and Pest.
Words and design by: Alexandra Toth
Food
One side has all the castles, beautiful architecture, and culture, while the other side is a bit more lively, full of markets, ruin bars, stores, and a big piece of Budapest history. This “divide” creates this interesting narrative which attracts more and more people each year to find out more about what this city has to offer.
Eating and drinking out is extremely cheap for tourists from abroad. Our generation is constantly confused and stressed about spending our money on travel, eating, experiencing different cultures or saving up for the future.
One of the good things about Budapest, that you can go out, experience the traditional dishes and drinks which by the way are amazing and you don`t have to spend a fortune on it. The city is known for having the cheapest drinks in Europe, for example you can have a pint of lager or a glass of wine under £1 or famous cocktails under £5.
Sights As mentioned before the city has some breath-taking architecture and attractions, such as the Gothic Parliament Building, the Fisherman’s Bastion, the historic Heroes’ Square or Gellert Hill that gives a beautiful view of the whole city. Next to all the sightseeing there are countless things to do. You prefer a relaxed afternoon? Go on a river cruise with one of those cheap glasses of wine and enjoy the sights. There are plenty of museums to see if you’re an art junkie; Museum of Fine Arts, Hungarian National Art Gallery or the Ludwig Museum. If you’re interested a bit of history I recommend going to the east side of the city (Pest) and check out House of Terror, the Shoes on the Danube or the Hospital in the Rock which is on the west side but it`s worth a visit.
Nightlife There are multiple historic Turkish Baths all around the city. Hungary is known for its great thermal water supply, and you can enjoy that in one of the many Turkish Baths that Budapest has to offer. You can relax and enjoy a piece of history all at once. The most famous baths are Szechenyi Baths and Gellert Spa. During the summer Szechenyi Baths offers parties after dark which is a must do if you are in Budapest. Enjoying the pools while having drinks and music with incredible lights makes for an unforgettable night. Ruin bars are all over the city and they don’t only look great but they offer great outdoor and indoor partying with live events which brings together the diverse community of Budapest, especially during the summer. The most popular ruin bars are Szimpla Kert and A38 ship.
Festivals Hungary can be proud of the great festivals they have too. One of Europe’s biggest festival takes place on Hajogyari Island. Every year a mix of A-list and smaller artist get to perform, there are lots of different fun activities to do as well. But the one thing to point out about this festival is the cultural diversity and atmosphere. All you see is people uniting to listen to their favourite artist, creating art together in one of the activity tents and just being happy in general. This festival just brings people together on the highest level, it’s all about love, acceptance and music with incredible lights. It’s truly an unforgettable experience.

ZULU BEADWORK
A huge part of South African culture is the tribes that make up part of the population. The Zulu’s form the largest ethnic group in South Africa. Beadwork is a form of art that the Zulu’s use to present themselves. The art and skill of beadwork takes part in the identification of Zulu people and acts as a form of communication. The men and women both serve different purposes in society in order to function as a whole. Today the Zulu people predominantly believe in Christianity, but have created a syncretic religion that is combined with the Zulu’s prior belief systems. Each colour of beads has a different meaning, both positive and negative.
BLACK Positive meaning - Marriage Negative meaning - Sadness and loneliness
BLUE
The Zulu’s only use one geometric shape in their beading and jewellery work – the triangle. Those who have studied the craft say that this is a representation of the father, mother and child unit. Here is what the triangles on the jewellery mean: A triangle pointing down represents an unmarried woman. A triangle pointing up represents an unmarried man. Two triangles joined at the base represent a married woman Two triangles joined at the points in an hourglass shape represent a married man.
Positive meaning - faithfulness and hope Negative meaning - hostility
GREEN Positive meaning - contentment Negative meaning - jealousy
PINK
Positive meaning - high status and promise Negative meaning - poverty and laziness
RED WHITE
Positive meaning - strong emotions and love Negative meaning - anger and heartache
Positive meaning - purity, spirituality and true love Negative meaning - none Each corner of the triangle has its own representation, just like the Catholics have the holy trinity representing the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, for the Zulu Community, each corner of the triangle signifies Father, Mother, and Child. With that, there are different ways you can design it, first if the triangle’s tip is pointing up it means that the woman is unmarried. For men if the triangle’s tip is pointing down, then it means unmarried man. To signify that a woman is married, they put two triangles together in a form of a diamond, which to them as well is a universal fertility symbol for the Zulu community. For married men, they make the two tips of the triangles meet that forms sort of an hourglass shape. Zulu people are a fierce ethnic tribe from Southern Africa and have been renowned for their artistic beadwork and colourful craftsmanship. The world of fashion has evolved and this has seen different cultures incorporated into fashion trends, which has resulted in diversity and more people embracing cultures that are different to theirs and appreciating the fashion that comes from these respective tribes.

Words and design by Sofia Wells
We all know loungewear is back and better than ever since the pandemic locked the world down. But is this for fashion or an updated lifestyle?
184
Undoubtably lockdown dramatically changed everyones lifestyle and this, two years’ on has never fully returned. Although it seems as though the pandemic’s impact is gone, it is actually just fading and will be around for a while yet. One huge impact of the pandemic was fashion. It forced us to strip back to our natural unfiltered selfs with no reason to wear those jeans that are a nightmare to get on or that glittery, but oh so itchy top. Since lockdown, loungewear sales increased by at least 1303% by the end of 2020, and nearly a year later, these sales are not backing down. However, as the pandemic is fading, this trend is not.
CARBON - LIFESTYLE
One of the featured looks on our instagram feed was Princess Diana’s classic cycling shorts and oversized jumper combination, recreations of this iconic look skyrocketed. The craze for this look will never truly disappear, loungewear in fashion or not. This is a great example of how lifestyle has an impact on our fashion choices, and how an individuals style is more to do with their lifestyle than staying on trend. The loungewear trend could be a desperate nostalgia for simpler times, whether that is when Princess Diana was still alive, or before the rise of social medias beauty standards. While this may be a deep analysis of trends, the return of Y2k and 90s fashion certainly supports the idea that comfort has blended into our lifestyle.
Currently, the trend could be staying for the cold weather approaching, but it could also fit the need to be simultaneously comfy and put together. As US Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley says, “cosy gives you security. Cosy affords you to be comfortable enough to project your best self to the world.” Each outfit an individual wears communicates nonverbally to society and loungewear can have positive effects on this. It is better for self-esteem and being seen as equals. Clothing comfort is a state of mind.
Surprisingly, there is a lot of scientific and psychological research into fashion. Studies’ have found people being less open and find it more difficult to relax when they are not wearing loungewear, which helps us
become more friendly and creative. Science has found clothes affect our behaviour, personality and confidence, loungewear makes individuals feel more confident.
So, as a society, we should be doing more to maintain the loungewear fashion trend into our lifestyle for positive affects on society. More pj days at work and school, and suddenly those deadlines are met. Lounge lifestyle for the better.

WELCOME TO THE
Words and Design by Amy Dulwich
You can’t even click on any on-trend website without seeing something about crystals and their healing properties that have left Generation Z absolutely obsessed. The google search for “nearby crystal stores” has grown so exponentially, that starting a crystal shop sounds like a very good idea to any budding entrepenuer. So why have crystals taken the next generation by storm? We have certainly seen an increase in demand for new age practices such as meditation, yoga and tarot card readings. They’ve taken over social media such as Intsagram and Tik Tok, offering a form of escapism and stress relief for internet-obsessed young adults. So how exactly are crystals supposed to heal you? Here’s how it works: In order for crystals to help you, you must hold the belief that everything in the Universe has a certain vibration or frequency level. As crystals are forms of rock, they have very specific and high vibrations from deep below the Earth’s surface. These then align with what is believed to be the frequency of ailments and parts of your body such as your stomach or throat. This may sound like a lot of hear-say if you’ve never heard or crystal healing or any new age practices before, but don’t worry! That’s normal. It takes a lot of practice and research to make this work for you.

How can you use the healing powers of crystals to help you? CARBON - LIFESTYLE
But for now, here is a starting point. First, we’re going to tell you how to use crystals to heal you (although if you want some crystals just to decorate your space and look pretty, be our guest!), then we’ll give you some specific crystals that may help you with some common issues you may face day to day. Some ways to use crystals are: • Sit and meditate with the crystal. Think about what you are using it for, for example if you are using it to help calm you, imagine the crystal relaxing you with each and every out breath as you meditate with it. • Wear it as jewellery - crystal necklaces, bracelets, rings and even earrings have taken over small businesses recently as top sellers. • Place them around different areas of your room. If you look into feng shui, there’s a lot of information on where to place crystals around your house in order to best make use of their energies and healing properties.

7 Tips to Emotionally Prepare for the Holiday Season
190
CARBON - LIFESTYLE
The Christmas holidays are fast approaching and while everyone is beginning the big rush for festive food and the ultimate can Christmas gifts the season can also elicit so many emotions for us. Happiness, joy, jubilation…but how about anxiety? stress? overwhelm? sadness? With the holidays can come a lot of pressure to entertain and perform. It can require a lot of energy to plan and participate and after lockdown and a global pandemic the thought of mass gatherings and full-on party season is daunting. With the obvious emotional highs can come the psychological lows so it is important to prepare for the holidays and have a game plan and be prepared. Whether you find yourself dealing with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), struggle with distant relatives or you are just feeling a little off, having a plan can help make the festive season much more enjoyable.
Stick to healthy habits It can be easy to overindulge with the rest of the crowd during the holidays. However, one of the best things you can do to make sure you feel good, mentally and physically is to try and stick to your healthy habits. Here are some tips: Make sure you have a good meal or snack before heading to a gathering. Maintain your workout schedule. Get enough sleep. Take time out to breathe, just be and breathe.
Reach out You may be surprised at how many people are alone or feel depressed at Christmas. Reach out to those that uplift you or perhaps that you uplift and make a plan to get together during the holidays. This can be small or large, whatever makes you enjoy. Here are some tips: Make a coffee date with a friend. Go to the gym once a week with a buddy. Plan a movie date to see a new movie – there are some great festive offerings coming this December. Take Vitamin D Supplements With the weather getting colder and the sky becoming cloudier, many can experience vitamin d deficiencies. This lack of light can leave you feeling lethargic and down than usual. Adding vitamin d supplements into your normal routine can help to combat the negative effects of the winter weather.
Light therapy
Light therapy is one that mimics the outdoor light that you may be missing because of the winter weather. Participating in light therapy can cause a “chemical change in your brain that lifts your mood and relieves the symptoms of SAD”. Talk to your health care professional about your own light box options and recommendations. Make a festive to-do list Sit down with a pen and paper and make a list of all the activities that you would like to do over the festive season and put those plans in action. This could include making Christmas cookies, listening to your favourite festive music, watching your favourite holiday movie, or going ice skating. Be realistic – there is nothing worse than an unfulfilled to do list. There can be a lot of pressure to make Christmas perfect. Remember that each holiday does not have to be like the last nor does it have to be like those in the holiday gift shop window. This might mean finding new food to make for the holidays, finding new ways to engage with relatives, and embracing new traditions of your own.
Put the Phone Away Put down the phone. It is very tempting to want to see what others are doing on social media, however, comparing the highlights of their season with yours is not the healthiest. Feel free to take a break from social media and create your own highlight reel. Allow yourself to say no. Sometimes saying yes to everything can leave you feeling rundown and overwhelmed. Find your own balance so that you can still do what makes you feel happy and feel calm. If there are engagements you can’t miss out on, perhaps remove another engagement from your list to balance that time with you time. Why say no when you can say yes? Yes, you may have the time. Yes, your schedule. may be open. However, ask yourself if it is best for you. Make time to schedule time for you to mentally regroup and recharge before your next social outing.
Find the Funny The holidays can seem like a big mess of chaos. When you start to feel overwhelmed or stressed, take a step back and find some funny. This could be in the form of a comic or funny movie. It could also just be as a game for yourself to find something amusing in the situation.
