Baby bags are one of the year’s best seen trends and guess what, they’re here to stay! They are efficient and cute, what more could you want? In fact, they are far more than just a pretty sight. They encourage a simplified lifestyle by supporting their owners to avoid unnecessary rubbish filling up the space. The small space encourages you to pack lightly yet cleverly. These cute baguette bags are a perfect addition to bring any outfit together whether its casual or fancy. They are quite possibly one of the most perfect accessories which can be dressed up or down.

THE

POP PUNK

14

There was once upon a time when your favourite pop-punk stars had eyebrow piercings, studded belts and fun dyed hair. It honestly was a time to be alive. Well it's good news because the pop-punk trends of the noughties era are rocking back twenty years later. Angsty teenage rebellion is in, let's take a trip down memory lane.....Shall we?

We can’t forget about Willow Smith who puts the native in ‘alternative’, with her full on rockstar aesthetic, fierce hairstyles and makeup looks. Her “transparent soul” music video, is a perfect throw back to noughties poppunk with the conventional setting of a nightclub, the fisheye lense, and the use of red, blue and yellow lighting. In the music video, Willow is also in a plaid miniskirt. There is a great amount of youthful angst in this music video and the aesthetics are to die for. Another upcoming female pop-punk artist that is baring her teeth is Maggie Lindemann. Her whole career is the perfect example that pop-punk trends are really coming back not just in the musical sense, but in fashion and beauty. In her “Knife Under My Pillow” music video common pop-punk tropes were clearly displayed throughout the music video such as the whole music video being set in a house, flashing lights, performing and dyed spiky hair.

Pop-punk is a subgenre of punk music and pop music, combining the rebellion of punk with the catchy and upbeat sound of pop. The musical genre gained mainstream popularity in the late ’90s and early ’00s with bands like Green Day, Blink-182, Avril Lavigne, Paramore and Fall Out Boy. Like many musical genres, pop-punk influenced a culture of its own unique attitude and fashion. It created an edgier aesthetic consisting of baggy pants, partially unbuttoned shirts, check patterns, skinny ties, spiky dyed hair and heavy-duty eyeliner. Combining elements of punk and skate culture, the style was distinctly its own. Now, about two decades later, it has come back to meet us again. At the forefront of the pop-punk revival is 2021’s breakout superstar Olivia Rodrigo. The music video for the singer’s chart-topping single “good 4 u” features Rodrigo in a plaid miniskirt, white knee-high socks and black latex opera gloves, belting out a vengeful breakup tune to the backdrop of a teenage bedroom set ablaze. Nothig screams pop-punk more than that honestly. Miss Rodrigo is really setting the standard for sky rocketing pop-punk music and fashion back. However, she isn’t the only female star to be dominating the pop-punk redefiniton.

All this sums up that pop-punk is making a comeback, and considering the popular Y2K craze that’s going on, it’s likely here to stay. Whether you’re an OG pop-punk fan or not, it’s time to get acquainted with the six trends that are redefining pop-punk for the contemporary moment.

Arc’Teryx lightweight jacket, £350, available at Arcteryx.

A new variation of the Athleisure trend has taken centre stage in the fashion industry and it goes by the name of Gorpcore .

One of the key pieces that makes Gorpcore recognizable is the waterproof jacket. As this trend is based off hiking and mountaineering, the jackets that are most popular are very often extremely durable, warm and so waterproof that you could probably take a long luxurious shower in one and remain bone dry. Here are a few of the most popular pieces on the market at the moment:

One of the main reasons some of the signature Gorpcore jackets are so expensive is because they’re made with a fabric called Gore-Tex. GoreTex is a breathable, waterproof textile found in high-performance clothes such as walking/hiking boots and mountain coats. Unlike synthetic textiles like nylon, the fabric stops rain from getting in but lets perspiration out making for the perfect weather enduring activewear. Gore-Tex has been around for over 50 years now and still remains at the top for water repellent materials, unless you are serious about your anoraks then it may seem like an unworthy investment, but as the UK isn’t exactly known for its arid landscapes, a Gore-Tex jacket may come in very handy not only for this

Drip is when your style or look is extremely fashionable and in trend. There are a lot of ways you can be in drip, for instance colour co-ordinating your outfit or the fitting of your outfit (either baggy or slim fitted). The main way to stay dripped is by wearing at least one expensive brand with the outfit so either the jewellery is expensive or the trainers, the bag or even the whole outfit. You can turn a normal outfit into drip simply by adding an expensive item to go with your outfit. Drip is mainly focused on the expensive item you have on you. Staying dripped looks easy but it can be quite challenging because trends change very quickly so you have to adapt to it. There are various factors which can affect your ability to adapt to drip such as, the pricing of the outfit and the availibity but depending on the type of drip you’re going for, you can make it work. Influencers are always on point when it comes to staying drippy as they can afford it, but that doesn’t mean you have to go out of your way to do the same. Anyone can dress with drip it’s all about gaining confidence in your style.

BUSY BODY

Once again, this winter is all about layered clothing. Rather than your ordinary layered outerwear, however, wearing multiple pieces on top of each other of different textures - sometimes clashing - perhaps featuring an exposed bra is all the crave. As seen on the runway by Acne Studios and by designers like Rui Zhou, enter the eclectic world that is layers, sleeves and all round busyness, that just works.

COATS AN Whilst it’s cold out, we all need the right coats to keep us warm. Fleece jackets not only keep us warm but they can make any outfit cosy, are soft and light weight. Paired with joggers or jeans, it doesn’t matter they work with every outfit! Here are some different ways you can style this type of jacket during this chilly season.

1.OVERSIZED LAYERING Oversized clothing has been popular for a while now, and what’s better than including a fleece? When layering this jacket, you want to look for something that has a collar, this could be anything from a turtleneck to a hoodie if you want that more cosy feel. This will mean that you will get all the warmth as if it was a larger coat, but just without the weight. If you are going for the more comfortable look you can wear this with a pair of joggers and trainers. If it is more of a casual look you can wear this with a simple pair of jeans and again some casual trainers such as Vans.

2.AS A VEST Sometimes a jacket can be too much, but you still need that little something to keep you warm. A great idea is to wear a fleece as a vest. Essentially wearing it over your clothes but it doesn’t have the sleeves and weight of a normal jacket. You’ll get all the warmth in your mid-section but will have fewer restrictions on your arms. You can wear them over any long sleeve with a pair of jeans or style it up with some cargos.

Designed & Written by Aiysha Hussain.

3.COLOUR BLOCKING When you think of wearing a fleece you might think of browns, blacks and whites. However, including some colour on your fleece is always an easy way to spice up your outfit. There are many fleece jackets out there in various patterns and colours but colour blocking is very popular. You want to look for a fleece with contrasting shades. You could pair this with a pair of pale jeans or again a simple pair of cargos.

As universities don’t have a dress code, it can be difficult to decide what to wear every morning... You want to keep up with trends, be comfortable and also dress weather appropriate in these winter months.

If you’re chilling in the library, a pair of comfy joggers and a jumper in the colder months can be a staple outfit or heading out for drinks on social nights, tops paired with a pair of jeans but can also be worn on just a regular day!

These are a few outfits put together to help guide you on how to study in style!

Boots are a perfect way to dress down an outfit such as a dress and a casual jacket.

As students, it can be quite difficult to keep up with the new and upcoming trends whilst still on a budget... websites such as Missguided have a student section as well as Pretty Little Thing and ASOS, as well as majority of retail stores offering student discount as an added bonus!

COMFORTABLE

Comfort is key when it comes to uni... long days of lectures and library sessions will want you to dress as comfortably as you can. You will also want to wear a comfortable pair of shoes that wont give you blisters or hurt your feet whilst walking around campus!

QUALITY

You also want to invest in clothes that are good quality... as a student that is studying, you dont want to be buying a new outfit everyday as this is not in the budget of a student.

MINIMALISTIC

A minimalistic outfit is key. A few good minimal garments pieced together is a staple outfit! This way, you can reuse garments in other outfits that are paired differently.

TREND ALERT: NIGHT FEVER IS BACK In 2020, and the beginning of this year for that matter, the concept of a real life runway show was a distant one, but alas, the face-toface shows of Fashion Week have come and gone. Forecasters have been analysing the runways, deciphering trends ready for spring/summer 2022. While it seems we have a long way to go till then, as we brave the depths of winter, why not start early and emerge yourself in the SS22 disco trend- being that it can easily be styled to fit the colder months.

So how can this be embraced by the masses? Whether you want to wait til the warmer months or participate now, brands have already been teasing their disco fever- and here are a couple to look out for. POSTER GIRL is a female run brand, with some of the boldest looks in upcoming fashion. It is “a label manifesting confidence, ultra femininity and referencing a direct nostalgia to the designers upbringings” with a “high gloss aesthetic”. Their designs are only becoming more distinctable and daring as they prepare to launch their SS22 collection early 2022. Encapsulating disco perfectly with a brand mantra of individualism and femininity, they are able to execute their valiant styles in a similar way to the fashions of the 70s.

Originating in the underground New York gay nightclubs in the 70s, disco fashion and its boldness was eventually grabbed by a larger mainstream audience, and its flambuoyancy enjoyed by all. The hypersexual nature of the garments captured the essence of freedom at the time, and was seen on many influential people in many places- on stage, at nightclubs more famously Studio 54, an exclusive nightclub famous for its celebrity clientele.

Jaded London’s eclectic designs have evolved, alongside the pandemic, and is a perfect example of designers adjusting their motifs to fit in with social demand. Starting off as merely a streetwear brand, Jaded has become a collection of elaborate styles for both men and women, as their mission statement reads, “here to dress the bold and daring”. Essentially it’s all about bold prints, textures and colours. Glitter, feather or even sheer is the new normal. Be daring, be bold, and get your disco on- we have learnt that life is too short. Top to bottom: Christian Kowan, Ami, David Koma, Fendi, Germanier

The general mood prior to the disco movement was that of malaise, and general depression; crime rates were high, many injustices were apparent and America was in the midst of an economic recession — sound familiar? The emergence of disco was what lifted the overall mood. It enabled representation and gave a platform to artists who were of colour, and often female and/or gay. It was a time for fluidity and freedom. It created a community rooted in New York’s party scene and inspired fashion, lots of which will make a reappearance next season. The past two years, and the real world issues that emerged- while being a time of utter stress for many, was one of the most interesting for trend forecasting due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic and all the political issues that arose during it. The cyclical nature of fashion was really highlighted, and people craved nostalgia, expression of oneself and boldness- just like they did in the 70s. With the return of parties, festivals and occasions, there’s been a consumer desire to shake off the sweatpants and get dressed to feel good.” Say forecasters at WGSN, “Prints are being used to create the wow factor”. The fashion world’s reaction to post-pandemic life was that of hope, which Fashion Week runways were able to capture, and it is clear that bold party looks are on the rise- even in everyday wear. “Fendi channels Studio 54 disco at Milan’s opening show”, Jess CartnerMorley, a fashion writer, said. With Italy being the first epicentre of the virus outside China, Milan embodied disco perfectly- representing sheer liberation in their shows. Dua Lipa walked the Versace show in a metallic dress: an ode to studio 54 fashion. Germanier debuted their collection in Paris featuring bold shoulders and feathers, as did David Koma in London.

HAINED UP

H eavy chain jewellery and chain accents are everywhere and on anything as of recent, from bag straps to being belts and now detailing on clothing such as jeans, hoodies and everything in between. Chain link accents are dominating the fashion scene! Let’s take a look at why this sudden trend is thriving at the moment.

Designed & Written By Sonia Osuji

Chain link accents have been around for a long run, we’ve seen it with Chanel and their vintage but classic shoulder bags with the chain link straps, same with Saint Laurent and their envelope bags. Chain link prints used to be very huge on specifically satin materialed shirts and were very popular in the early 2010s. We are now seeing more evolved versions of the chain link bag straps with brands like Bottega Veneta and Stella Mccartney having oversized chain link hand straps on their shoulder bags and pouches. We could all tell these statement chain bags would be a hit trend from the spring/ summer collections of 2021. We saw Versace, KARA and Brice Glen all exhibit chain link straps on their bags for the season. Chain link straps are in for the long run bag wise as we fast forward to spring/ summer collections of 2022 and we are still seeing them on the catwalks. Chanel, Acne Studios and Ports 1961 have all been spotted exhibiting chain link straps on their new upcoming bags of 2022.

As for accessories other than bags, belt loop chains have literally been EVERYWHERE. If you don’t have one or at least want one, you’re very far behind at this point. Adapted from bikers style, the belt loop chain is a great and stylish androgynous accessory piece to really spice up your bottom half and your outift overall. We are seeing them in many different colours, silver, gold, white, pink and even rainbow colours. It’s the perfect and easiest way to turn your outfit from a solid 5 to a solid 9 and a half. Get out and buy yourself one!

Chain accents have made their way onto clothing now and we couldn’t be any happier. It is beautifully used in jeans and many tops as connectors almost like thread. We are seeing it on jeans which skyrocketed early in the year, t-shirts and hoodies.

We can’t talk about the belt loop chains without talking about it’s sister (if you really think about it). Chain belts. Yes, belts in the form of chains. This accessory piece has also been circulating around and is a great way to dazzle up your outfit. It will instantly make you look more sleek, cool and stylish. The chain belt is a definite MUST if you want to add more chains to your outfit/ wardrobe.

75

FASHION I CARBON

The chain accents on clothes are getting more and more popular by the day. It’s exciting to see how far chain links are extending in the fashion scene and how to pull it off. It’s a very futuristic vibe and aesthetic to outfits and really takes fashion to the next level. Blending the line between accessories and clothing is a new step into the future for the fashion world. Comfort isn’t really an option or an accessibility with this fashion choice. However..... it is THE option to really make your style step into the right direction. It doesn’t hurt to amp up your style remember, beauty is pain.

We can’t miss where we usually spot chains - Jewellery. Layered thick necklaces have become a huge thing for a while now, the more the better in this case. We see many, mainly the younger generation, moving away from minimalism when it comes to jewellery. More is more in this case, minimalism used to be a huge go-to for jewellery-wearers with simple ‘dainty’ necklaces being a ‘ trendy’ look. Now it’s all about how many necklaces you can fit on your neck. We are also seeing chain rings which are the perfect hand candy, there isn’t much to see of these rings just yet but we should keep our hopes up.

CARBON I FASHION

76

Chain links and accents can be traced to the new alternative movement that happened late 2019 and is going stronger until now. In which ‘emo’ alternative trends are becoming more and more mainstream (with the help of TikTok). Dark grunge styles, that can be described as a ‘dark twist on male Kpop fashion’ has everything to do with this. With that certain style and aesthetic consisting of a lot of black, a lot of cargos and a lot of silver chains everywhere across the body. We can’t wait to see everyone chained up.

Wearing sunglasses makes you feel sexy and confident and what makes them so unique is that anyone can wear them and still look good. They are very affordable and comfortable and they come in different colours, shapes and sizes. Although there’s many sunglasses out there, finding the right one to match with your outfit is essential as you don’t want to pair them up incorrectly. Black sunglasses are the most common ones because firstly, you can never go wrong with black and secondly, they go well with nearly every outfit.

SWEATER

Sweaters are popular all year round but during the winter they become a favourite. They can be knitted sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies etc. They’re great because they keep you warm whilst also being comfortable and stylish! They can be layered for extra warmth or even if you get too hot you can take it off and tie it around your waist and it’s KNITTED SWEATERS A must for this cold weather is a knitted sweater. There are many different types of knitted sweaters to choose from.

FISHERMAN’S SWEATER A fisherman sweater is a thick jumper perfect for the colder days. They traditionally involve a range of different patterns. They’re eye-catching and always come in a variety of different colours, from bright to neutral. They can be worn as a cosy jumper to lounge around the house, or styled up and worn to brunch!

BLACK TURTLENECK Black turtlenecks are very practical pieces of clothing. You can layer a thin fitted style underneath clothing or tucking, whilst the oversized is better for feeling cosy and can be paired with a simple pair of black leggings, or a skirt with tights and a pair of black boots.

Designed & Written By Aiysha Hussain

CARDIGAN Cardigans are extremely versatile pieces of clothing. Whether you pair it over the top of a dress or crop top, or have it buttoned up and are wearing it as a top it always has the ability to look stylish and keep you cosy! Neutral tones are usually more common with this type of sweater, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find them in some bright colours. They work so well as you can go for the more simple, casual look with some neutral tones but also spice it up with a vibrant colour of your choice.

HOODIES

Hoodies are always a good choice for this type of weather but can be quite repetitive. Here are some easy ways to style up your hoodie outfits.

BOLD TROUSERS An easy way to style a plain hoodie is to wear something more dramatic below. Patterned trousers are a great way of doing this. Bright colours or eye-catching patterns add a bit of spice to simple trousers and a hoodie to make it look a lot more fashionable. The plain hoodie gives it a much more efortless feel and makes sure you dont look overdressed.

STYLE WITH A BLAZER If you’re wanting to look somewhat chic but still be cosy, a blazer is the perfect match layered over a hoodie. Adding a tailored blazer on top gives the perfect edgy look a sophisticated touch. It’s perfect for day trips out or even a dinner. A black hoodie paired with some leather or latex trousers is already a very fashionable look, adding a blazer just gives it more of a formal feel.

CROPPED HOODIE If you aren’t feeling the oversized look so much, cropped hoodies are a great way to go. They give the same comfort of a regular hoodie but let you show a little more skin. You can pair it with a pair of joggers or leggings for that comfier look. You could also match them with the joggers if it is more of a plain hoodie. Co-ordinating colours matched with the right shoes and accessories makes your outfit seem more put together and turns it from loungewear into a more stylish outfit.

For thousands of years, astrology has been used to predict events and personality traits by studying the movements and positions of celestial pieces in Space such as constellations, planets and stars. The number of people believing in astrology and other new ages beliefs & practices such as crysal healing, yoga and tarot, has grown rapidly over the past few decades. It’s travelled across to the Western world and is o longer seen as unrealistic or unbelievable. This may be because of the increased evidence and studies into the practices, or just the spreading of information all over social media such as Tik Tok and Instagram. Tik Tok has flooded since it first began with spiritual creators (often tarot readers, astrologers and spiritual influencers) posting videos about new age practices to help people find their own spiritual path, learn to relax in such a busy, over-complicated modern world, and to give advide and guidance to people watching through the use of divination. Divination has become a huge practice in the past year or so, with sales of runes, cards and even crystal balls accelerating rapidly. Divination is defined as “The practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means.” according to the Oxford dictionary. It’s a form of fortune telling and includes the use of tarot & oracle cards, pendulum reading, crystal readings, scrying , runes and tea leaf readings. Astrology can also be used as a form of divination as astrologers believe the stars and celestial objects above can affect events on Earth. It is believed that they can also affect how people act - this is how horoscopes are written. An astrologer studies how the planets and constellations will move over a chosen period of time, and uses this to determine the effects they may have over the Earth and its inhabitants. So how can you use astrology to help you? Firstly, you need to approach it in the right way. As it’s a pseudoscience, you should always place evidence-backed, real science first. It’s best to use astrology and other new age divination practices in a fun, enlightening way. For example, if you see a horoscope telling you that today is a good day to rest, or that maybe you’ve been feeling burnt out or stressed lately, then take that time to sit and reflect on your mental health and if you’ve been looking after yourself well enough. It’s a great way to reflect and think positively towards anything in your life. Meditating, another popular new age practice, is also a great way to reflect and relax. Focus on your breathing, close your eyes and place your hands on your belly. Feel each breath as your stomach moves in and out slowly. If you like, why not think about your zodiac sign, and what it may mean for you. Research the good and bad parts of your zodiac traits, and think about how that reflects in your day to day life. If you are interested in astrology, you can search online to find your “birth chart”, which may tell you even more about yourself and how the stars aligned when you were born.

Aries March 21 - April 19

Taurus April 20 - May 20

Gemini May 21 - June 21

Mars enters Sagittarius on the 16th of January, creating very favourable financial situations for you. There’s a big focus on money for the first half of the year, and lots of romance is expected. Jupiter enters Pisces in April, increasing your wealth even more so. Watch out for the Solar Eclipse in October though, as it may make you feel a little insecure and anxious. Make self-care a priority at this time.

You’ll be feeling very sociable and optimistic this year, Taurus! June’s astrology welcomes in wealth and positive career moves. 2022 is looking like a great year for money and affluence in general, but for your sign, your career is a huge focus this year. You’ll enjoy your career a lot more, and if you’re not there yet, you are very much on the road to getting your dream job. Believe and you will achieve!

Mars may bring a little love trouble in January, but by April, Venus in Aquarius may make your feeling a little more detached. Try not to get too overwhelmed - don’t overcatastrophise and overthink. This year is looking great for starting new projects, particularly in August and September with Mars in Taurus. In June, Venus will be in Taurus, creating a positive time for love. Embrace it!

Cancer June 22 - July 22

Leo July 23 - August 22

Virgo August 23 - September 22

You’re already a rather emotional sign Cancer, but you may start to feel a little overworked in the first part of the year. Prioritise self-care. Create some emergency relaxation activities so you don’t feel overwhelmed or burnt-out. In February, focus on your family and home, you’ll feel better for it. Rest and relaxation are super important for you this year, and any relaxing routine you create may last for decades to come!

Health should be a huge priority for you this year Leo! Why not try out a new gym or learn some new healthy recipes over the Christmas break? March is a particularly important month for focusing on your health, but avoid excess strain. This year is about balance - look after yourself. The Mars Retrograde in September & November may throw up some mixed emotions, so keep calm and take care.

What a great financial year for you, Virgo! Especially halfway through the year, you’ll see your finances increase a lot. Work hard and you will be rewarded tenfold. August sees some intense emotions, so focus on self-care throughout the beginning of the year to help yourself deal with this a lot better. August also sees a great love appear... There’s a huge focus on friends, colleagues and romantic partners for you this year.

Libra September 23 - October 23

Scorpio October 24 - November 21

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21

The beginning of 2022 brings you an abundance of joy and contentment, you lucky thing! Around halfway through the year, there may be significant gains to your career, but don’t over exert yourself. Keep a low profile. Rest. It’s also super important to communicate this year with everyone you love. Talk to people - and listen back to them. You’ll create some amazing friends this year if you remember this.

January may be a little emotional for you this year, but February is looking very positive in terms of your bank balance and career. There’s a theme of pessimism running through the year for you, so watch your inner thoughts and try to re-word your negative thoughts and feelings into positive ones. Affirmations are a great way to combat this. You’re sensitive Scorpio, even if you don’t show it. Take care.

You’ll be reaping the results from all your hard work throughout 2022, Sag! April is a great time for you to start a new venture or project. Your career is also improving, it’s only getting better and better for you. Travel is calling to you this year, even if it’s just a few day trips across the country. Either way, it’s a great year for you to explore and expand your horizons. Start new projects and embrace meeting new people.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19

Aquarius January 20 - February 18

Pisces February 19 - March 20

Keep your focus on being physically fit and healthy this year, maybe get a new gym membership, find a new exercise you love such as boxing or yoga, and work on your food intake. Any changes you make for the better in this area of your life will stay even after this year us over. May and June are looking great for romance, and you’re reminded to participate in teamwork wherever possible.

Focus on your health this year, particularly in March and April, as this will help you prosper in all other areas of your life. You should prioritise relaxation in June and July - spend time in nature as much as you can and rest up. 2022 is a great year for money (according to numerology), but keep your finances private and save as much as you can. You’ll thank yourself in the months to come.

Your career will be thriving at the start of this year, so maybe do some overtime if you can, and enjoy it! You’ll be recieving tremedous amounts of support from your friends and family this year, so make sure you thank them and show your gratitude. Take time to pay them back. The stars also want you to be persistent in everything you do in 2022. Don’t give up! The Universe is on your side.

So what does my zodiac sign mean? You can use websites such as Cafe Astrology, Chani Nicholas or Astro Charts to find out your entire birth chart (this is a record of the placement of all the planets, constellations and celestial objects at the time of your birth - make sure you double check with your parents your birth time for accurate results). Your sun sign (the signs to left) is the sign that most people know and identify themselves by (“what sign are you?” “Oh, I’m a Pisces.”). This is a great start, however, your sun sign is actually not as big as part of your astrological chart as people

often think. The most important parts of your birth chart that people mention, particularly all over Tik Tok, are your sun, moon and rising/ascendant signs. Your sun sign is the sign the sunw as in at the time of your birth. It tells you about your core personality, it governs your basic identity and indicates your true path and purpose. For example, Leo is a sign known for its fiery nature and confidence, so if your sun sign is Leo, you will likely be an extroverted, fiery person on the outside. Your moon sign is the moon was in when you were born. It’s all about your emotions and how you handle them. It’s your inner self, who you are in private and indicates your comfort zones. If your moon is in Cancer, for example, you may be a very emotional person, who gets upset quite easily but is rather introverted, particularly with their emotions and showing them. Your rising sign, or Ascendant sign is the sign that was rising when you were born. This is your outer self, and how you appear to others. It is the first impression you give off to strangers. It’s who you are or appear to be on the surface. These three parts of your chart are the most

95

important parts to remember as they are what make up the core parts of your being. Have you ever met someone who is the same zodiac (sun) sign as you, but you feel they are quite different to you? Although the sun changes sign roughly every 28 days (see to the left), the moon changes sign every couple days or so, meaning two people born underneath the virgo sun sign, may have two completely different moon signs. For example, one may have a Leo moon, while the other has a Cancer moon, making the way they handle their emotions rather different. Now how are you supposed to know what all the signs mean? If your moon is in capricorn, that’s not going to mean anything to you if you don’t know the traits of the capricorn sign. It’s good to take some time to research each sign and their traits, then apply this to that area of your chart. It may sound a little confusing at first, but once you know a little more about what each zodiac sign means, the easier it will be for you to decipher your chart and discover more about yourself. Maybe you can even learn to read other people’s birth charts, and find out all their secrets...

Nose rings are pretty much as common as having your nails painted right now. The popularity of nose piercings grew rapidly after the peak of lockdown and everybody took matters into their own hands, turning their bedrooms into piercing shops. Currently, there’s a rise of having multiple rings in your nose too. More detailed, faux jewellery to achieve this illusion without needing multiple piercing holes has also become widely available to purchase among small jewellery companies. Nostril piercings became a massive beauty trend in and around India in the 1500’s, it was believed that having a nose piercing relieved pain from childbirth and menstruation. The nose piercing then had been adopted by hippy, punk and goth culture in the 60/ 70’s, at this time having a nose ring was massively considered rebellious and unprofessional. Now nose rings are faced with not near as much controversy and are socially acceptable.

Top 10 tips to improve flexibility Get a massage

Breathe deeply

A stronger impact on the muscles means going deep. A massage can dig deep, find the tightness and loosen it. Releasing the tension in the muscles will increase flexibility.

Your body needs oxygen more than any other nutrient. Stress causes muscles in the chest to tighten, restricting breathing. Research has found body posture and position influences the chemistry in the brain. If you are not breathing deeply, it is promoting stiffness in the muscles. Deep breathing is also beneficial for all health, mental and physical. Putting this into your daily routine could also improve you fitness levels.

Get warm Despite it being harder to do so in winter, it is more important too. With many mistaking stretching for a warm-up, blood flow in the required muscles actually prepares the body for stretching. A five minute jumping exercise video will definitely get that heart rate up and reduce the tension placed on the muscles. For a no jumping alternative a brisk walk will be less intense. Not only is there a reduced risk of injury after warming-up, there is also increased flexibility. With the muscles being the most flexible, there is more chance of increasing this.

Keep hydrated Similarily, hydration is important for all levels off health, but it can also aid loosening the muscles. Dehydration can cause stiffness in the muscles as the tissue loses its elasticity and bounce. When stretching, you are losing water through sweat so replacing that is important to stretch to your full potential to get the most benefit.

nervous

The brain has a set point for every muscle telling how long and short it can be. When you reach this, the brain induces a contraction to stop you going any further. This is not the physical end of the muscle, just the stretch reflex. While the stretch reflex is important, especially for protecting the muscles, you can safely trick your nervous system. The hamstrings are essential when it comes to this, to get your stretch reflex to go to deeper and deeper range. If successful, there is natural improvement to flexibility as it allows a further set point for all stretches. This tip is certainly mind over matter.

Static stretching is out and dynamic stretching is in. To reduce the risk of micro-tearing your muscles connective tissue, letting your body move naturally within a stretch, whether that is pushing it a little further or relaxing the stretch, this technique increases muscle strength. Move more, rather than pose more.

Nutritious food is essential for rebuilding your muscles by providing amino acids to the muscles. This also increases the energy store that can be used later. Vitamins, especially vitamin A , are important for muscle growth as well. Vitamin A guides protein synthesis, an essential element for flexibility.

Hold stretches

Yoga challenges

On the other hand, holding stretches for thirty seconds develops a new set-point by the power of muscle memory, a balance of both is best.

A change in routine can bring back the fun and motivational element to improving flexibility. Challenges also aid a growth mindset.

Most importantly: Take a break! Taking a break and not pushing your body too hard is the best thing you can do to improve flexibility. Your muscles need time to recover and adjust to the new set point, sometimes just moving is enough. Just like any exercise, having cheat days is a reset, mentally and physically. If you don’t feel up for it that day, that is okay. The less pressure, the less stress, the looser the muscles. Listen to your body.

Is Barbie still the “ideal” body type in the 21st Century?

Words by Jenna, designed by Amy. Photographed by both

Body positivity refers to the assertion that all people deserve to have a positive body image, regardless of how society and popular culture view ideal shape, size, and appearance. Body positivity is not just about challenging how society views people based upon their physical size and shape, however. It also recognizes that judgments are often made based on race, gender, sexuality, and disability.  Body positivity also aims to help people understand how popular media messages contribute to the relationship that people have with their bodies, including how they feel about food, exercise, clothing, health, identity, and self-care.

CARBON I LIFESTYLE

104

Body Positivity tells us we’re okay as we are. Loving our bodies is more important than what we look like. In fact, if the traditional Barbie doll was a real woman, she would be 5’9” and weigh 120 pounds. Her body fat percentage would be incredibly low. After years of having this Barbie, the American toy company Mattel has decided to create three new bodies for barbie. Three new bodies: petite, tall and curvy. Body positivity is, by its very definition, about viewing our bodies as something that is not only perfectly acceptable but entirely wonderful. In a world where the overriding mentality is that we should be ashamed of our bodies (particularly if our bodies are large, scarred, or in some other way ‘abnormal’), this is an overwhelmingly powerful message. However, in recent years, the movement has

105

become more commodified. Body positivity seems to now be a ‘free-for-all’ movement monetised and politicised by brands and public figures, in ways that often result in individuals above a certain size and of a certain ethnicity being excluded from the conversation — when they were the ones to effectively start it in the first place. While the movement has done wonderful things for bodies often left out, and has created amazing opportunities, it has also dangerously created its own standard of beauty that a lot of underprivileged bodies feel they cannot aspire to. We’ve gone from seeing the movement be all about plus-size adulation and celebration to it now being centred on ‘acceptably fat’ women: beautiful women with extreme hourglass shapes, typically white or light skinned, with small waists, big hips and high cheekbones...

What would you say influences your fashion style and why? “Nobody, I’m a very different and weird individual ha! Well, I like to think so anyway, I’m very much a do what you want to and do whatever makes you happy kind of gal, so if I want to wear flared jeans from the 90’s then I’m going to kind of thing, I don’t think anyone should have a say about it! It’s your choice and I just dress how I feel my personality is best reflected.” How would you describe your own fashion style?

What is your opinion on fast fashion? “In regard to fast fashion- I think a lot of clothing is overpriced these days and for what reason? There is none. You won’t catch me buying a £60 dress to wear on one a night out. I would rather buy some jeans and a cute top for £30 from a better and well branded company than a company who overcharge and don’t treat their staff correctly.” What are your favourite brands/where do you shop? “I mainly shop online on Shein or Zaful or cute little boutique websites where I can find

Can we expect new music coming soon? “New music of course!! I have just released my full second album on Soundcloud a few weeks back, but I am already working on new music, I am very dedicated and hardworking when it comes to my singing!” Who influences your music style/who inspired you to start writing your own music? “My dad, he was in a band when he was younger, so I have been brought up with music. He taught me how to play piano and I also self-taught. He is currently still teaching me the guitar; music runs in my blood. Music is one of the only things I am good at, writing lyrics comes naturally to me, give me a beat, topic and five minutes and ill have wrote half a song in that time. So starting with arriving into London around 11am, head to Oxford Street for some shopping then head to Bond Street and Carnaby Street to see all the lights and decorations then as you will be close head to Leicester Square Christmas markets open till the end of January, or if you don’t really like Christmas markets then head to Covent Garden to see the big Christmas tree and every hour for 1 minute it snows! After all that walking you will probably be hungry and ready for some lunch, there are loads and loads of restaurants in London but some of the most recommended to feel Christmassy is 34 Mayfair. It’s a bit pricy but definitely worth it, as the food and decorations are insane. If you want something on the cheaper side but still special, then Harry’s has got delicious food and a great aesthetic or there’s the Ivy in Chelsea. After some food, it’s time for an activity. If you want a fun activity to do then defiinitely head to Winter Wonderland, nothing beats this experience! Winter Wonderland has grown into an extravaganza with ice skating, shows, roller coaster rides, street food stalls, festive bars and live music. It’s a great day out for all ages, or even a night out for the over 18s. If you’re not into busy spaces and rides, then how about a night trip to the Natural History Museum for some ice skating under the lights. Then follow up at the end of the day visiting the Canary Wharf light show best seen at night. Come January 2022, a stunning showcase of neon, LED, and everything illuminated will see light artists from around the world gather in London, to show what an unbridled imagination and state of the art light technology can do. As this doesn’t come till January, if you’re visiting in December then go see one of the many Christmas markets there are around London or even the Christmas carols in St Pauls Cathedral.

Book ahead, especially at busy times, or check out your other winter ice skating options in London” “I went here for a night out with some friends, we went to the German markets and drank beer and mulled wine all night long whilst listening to great live music. You feel very Christmassy here!”

Next is CANARY WHARF LIGHTS “This area is always beautiful but, particularly so during the Winter Lights festival. Up to 30 different light installations light up the path between Canary Wharf and West ferry. A must do!” “Had a great day out with friends in Canary Wharf. we spent a few hours walking and stopping for the odd drink and a bite to eat. We saw the gardens on the roof, and found an amazing walking tunnel straight out of Star Trek.”

Next up is NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM ICE SKATING “Is a magical festive day out, a must during December and January. Definitely worth the price even though at first you may feel as though it’s too pricey, its all worth it” “Can be busy, but that just adds to the atmosphere, I would recommend going at night time as the lights makes it truly magical” “Couldn’t recommend any more”

Last but not least LEICESTER SQUARE CHRISTMAS MARKETS “One of the best markets to visit over the festive months, it’s beautiful and buzzing with atmosphere” “It’s a very busy market because of where it is in London, so if you enjoy a quieter market then I wouldn’t recommend this one but if you love the busy atmosphere then give this a visit”

LIFESTYLE I CARBON

Written and designed by Amy Dulwhich. Modelled by Ella Gutfreund

A lot of thoughts and feelings arise when we approach a new year - often unpleasant ones. We’re already sat wondering how the next year is going to look, not long after the Christmas dinner has barely settled in our stomach. Take a break from that thought for a minute, as we’re going to look at what specifically the fashion industry has in store for 2022. If you ever come across the rare combonation of a trend forecaster who is also a numerology, they’d tell you all about how the upcoming abundance of 2s hints at a supremely

CARBON I LIFESTYLE

feminine force arising. Perhaps this is telling us to embrace our feminine energy throughout 2022, whether that be through how we act, the things we say or how we dress. A trend forecaster may say that trends such as mini skirts (we are forever greatful to Mary Quant for that one), lace and leather, silk dresses and floral patterns may be coming back in for the next year, and we can’t say we’re mad about that. The catwalk shows in September showing the Spring/Summer 2022 collections from a mix of prestige and up-

116

and- coming designers featured many of these trends, yet also a very futuristic theme. After all, the past couple years have paved the way for an even more up-to-date world full of so many techinological inventions and advancements. The rise of Artficial Intelligence has also helped shape the continously growing and rapidly improving society that we live in. It leaves us asking daily, “What else could there possibly be?” Every day, new discoveries and inventions become easily

accessible to us in the comfort of our homes. It really does feel like we are now living in a futuristic world straight out of an 80’s Sci-Fi movie. So how will this affect our clothes? Well we know bold shoulders and masculine blazers are making a come-back in the new year...though this does contrast with the ‘feminine energy’ that we previously mentioned 2022 signifiying. Perhaps we will see a rise in aviator sunglasses, puffy sleeves and studded jackets or maybe we are simply moving too fast in time, and we’ll

outgrow them before they even come back in. As for futuristic colours, we are absolutely loving white and blue for this winter season. Glittery blue eyeliner is all the rage, and we see that continuing all throughout the cold months. Why not pair your silver and blue eyeshadow with a perfect white winter coat and warm, fluffy boots? Wherever you can, add some blue motifs such as blue earrings, rings and patches to your outfits to give them that extra wintery buzz. We want to look like we’re fresh out of the snow this season,

117

and what better way to start the new year than by glowing in warm, fluffy coats and cosy gloves? Maybe even hop down to the local ski resort if you’re so lucky as to have one near by... So what have we learnt about the future of fashion in 2022? We see feminine trends such as florals and satin dresses to make us feel more girly and at one with our femininity. And we see futuristic trends like bold shoulders and thick framed sunglasses staying around all year. What trend are you looking forward to?

Fitness is a thing enjoyed by millions of people. Some do it to compete, some do it just as a hobby. There are many ways to maintain your body`s wellbeing. One of these is pole dancing which still tends to cause some controversy.

3.) Are there any career opportunities in it? This performance art form takes place not only in „stereotypical” gentleman's clubs as erotic dance but also as a mainstream form of fitness, practiced in gyms and dedicated dance studios. To sum up, you can be a pole dance instructor in the future, there is also a possibility to offer private classes

24-year-old Kinga has answered a few questions about this beautiful form of sport, breaking down the benefits of it, the stigma around it, and telling us how to get into it.

4.) How do you feel the stereotype/stigma around pole dancing? It's just an outdated stereotype among the elderly to me. I have never been judged by anyone. I would be more inclined to say that people admire (especially in my age) it and are impressed because they know how hard this sport is and how hard it is to make seemingly easy figures at times. So, to sum up, I do not care about the opinion of others, it is important that I enjoy the pole, it helps to de-stress, sculpt my figure, and spend time amongst great people.

1.) How did you get into pole dancing? I was bored just going to the gym every single day and doing the same exercises all the time. When I was a teenager, I used to dance, and I wanted to start this hobby of mine again, so I started looking for a dance school. Couldn’t find anything interesting for me, until I found Urban Aerial`s account on Instagram. I decided to go to a class and try something new, I enjoyed it very much and I`m doing it since then.

5.) How would you recommend getting into it?

2.) What do you love about it? What are the benefits?

Just do it! Definitely don’t overthink about it! Just grab a pair of shorts and join this amazing society!

Pole Dancing is a fantastic way of exercising! It strengthens and tones your entire body, develops your cardiovascular stamina, increases your flexibility, and is loads of fun. Among the health benefits of pole dancing, it helps you achieve weight loss from both a cardio and strength perspective. The intensity of the sessions helps you burn calories, and all the lifting, climbing, and holding will help you build muscle. I have two amazing instructors Charlie (@charcharpole) and Claire (@ claireblaire) who are lovely, talented, and very patient with us. Each time when I try a new figure, it seems unrealistic to me, but with their help, I`m always able to do them at the end, after one lesson. I keep pushing my limits, learning new things, and getting stronger, I think that`s amazing.

“Pole dance exercise classes are incredibly popular among people who might be looking to express their sexuality, confidence and stay fit through physically challenging, and creative movements.”

Confidence. We all struggle w ith it from time to time. For some, it comes naturally and some of us have to learn to build it up. Definitely a hard task but not impossible. Carbon is here to help you out w ith a few tips that could make your journey to confidence and self-love easier. Affirmations

Mindfulness

Pretend

Confidence all depends on how you treat yourself first. That is why positive self-talk and affirmations are very important. Grab a notebook or stand in front of a mirror where you can tell yourself your affirmations. Whatever technique you come up with that works for you make sure you do it with kindness and believe it. Telling yourself reassuring things is going to take you a long way because at the end of the day you`re the one who needs to believe in you without a doubt.

Of course, physical health means nothing if your mind is not in the right place. Our days can get very stressful with all the deadlines and work but it`s important to forget about those sometimes and destress and clear your mind. Journaling could be a great way to do that, you write down all your achievements and goals and document your progress. Imagine reading it back when you achieved those goals!

As Rihanna said: pretend…and let me tell you it does wonders. Once you start acting confident you`ll see how different things go and you`re going to like it. After a while, you won`t even have to pretend it because it`ll just come naturally from within. Ever heard about Sasha Fierce? She is Beyonce`s alter ego who is aggressive, strong, and sexually confident.

Care to doll up

L earn to say no

I`m not saying that you have to go outside in full glam and the best outfits every single day because who has the energy for that right? But when you feel a bit down a little makeup and a visible effort put in to the outfit will make you feel a hundred times better.

Setting your boundaries and leaving people-pleasing behaviours behind is the best thing you can do for yourself. Not only other people but you will learn that you`re not going to tolerate anything that does not please you in any way.

Be kind

Surround yourself w ith the right people

Spend quality time w ith yourself

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Don`t be kind only to yourself but to others too. Whatever you put out there, the same will come back to you.

I feel like this is very self-explanatory as well. Having people around with who you can uplift each other, and you can talk to is a key thing to feel great.

This is when you put all of your devices down and you stay alone with your brain, which can be scary but you need to learn how to overcome and understand your thoughts and emotions so you can be clear about the things you want.

Stop comparing yourself

Be yourself

We subconsciously compare ourselves to others, especially at the time of social media. Try to follow pages that have a positive effect on you and don`t bring you or your self-esteem down. Remember it`s nearly impossible to tell the real story behind pictures and smiles so the only thing you should compare is you to your past self and reflect on that.

Love the person who you are now and who you`ll become in the future. Change is inevitable and it`s not a bad thing. We`re all learning and evolving, make sure you enjoy every step

Do things that scare you Is there something you`ve always wanted to do but it`s way outside of your comfort zone? Do it! You`ll be surprised how great you`re going to feel after and the confidence it`ll give you.

An Interview With Holly Lamb Holly is a 19 year old who works full time in a local bar, yet on the side uses TikTok as a way of engaging with people and for extra income. We have had the pleasure to be able to speak with Holly herself to get some advice on how anyone could fulfill their dreams of influencing/ using social media as a way of work and to find out a bit more of her way of life.

When did you start Tik Tok? I started uploding to Tik Tok in late 2019 where it was done to have fun as everyone had started downloading the app. I then started to post more frequently and it became a hobby, this is where i started to gain more viewers and was able to come up with more content ideas because i could see what the viewers engaged with most.

What made you start wanting to upload more frequently onto Tik Tok? I think it started when I realised that the more I posted, the more I had further engagement come through from viewers. The more likes, comments and followers I got, the more it started forming into a close community kind of thing. Also, the fact it doesn’t feel like a job at all and more of a comfort and enjoyable type thing encouraged me to build up my account.

What would you recommend to someone who is wanting to start influencing/ making a job out of Tik Tok?

Written and designed by Lauren Burger

DON’T GIVE UP! As easy as it is to say that, I can understand being on Tik Tok you are allowing yourself to be seen by anyone. There most probably will be times where you recieve a hateful comment, but the people who reach out and engage with you nicely purely because they love your content definitely out weighs the negatives. Overall, don’t give up, despite the minor set backs you may recieve, try not to allow it to push you away from what your wanting to do.

CARBON I LIFESTYLE

122

What are some good experiences you’ve had since posting on Tik Tok? Their are many I have had which I am extremely greatful for. One of my favourites was being invited to the Eyleure X Millie Grace Court party. It was a great experience and I’m sure not the last.

Have any brands reached out to you? Yes! I have been greatful enough to have had brands reach out me, especially brands I have a huge interest in. For example, Eylure, Estrid, Shein and many other small independent businesses.

How would you recommend getting yourself noticed on Tik Tok? I would say keep content flowing. Don’t leave it days between posts and then expect to be receiving thousands of likes and followers. You need to keep posting regulalry (at least twice a day) then you will gradually see your engagement rising. Another thing to keep in mind is to give it time. Don’t be put off that you’re not getting engagement immediately, they will progressively come, the more you post.

Chapter 2, Blurred lines The blurred lines music video, sung by Robin Thick, featuring Pharrell was released in 2013, Emily is arguably the face of the music video and if you mention her name, this video is where people will know her from. But Emily has avoided this part of her career since it happened and didn’t plan on writing an essay on the Robbin thick assault that took place on set which was a memory she had supressed. Emily took away positives from her bad experience. The music video was her choice, the director was a woman, who made Emily want to do it more and she also felt empowered and powerful from the video. When the news broke that Emily had written an essay of her experiences, the media wrongfully didn’t side with Emily, ‘she’s topless in a music video what did she expect?’ and though this was wrong, Ratajkowski saw the advantages from men seeing her as an object. Her career is based off her being attractive to men, and she’s made a very successful career from it, being tactical and using her body. Emily feels as if all women are playing the game of the male gaze weather it’s your intention to be seen as attractive to men or not.

Emily Ratajkowski has released a book of essays that reflect on traumatic events that have happened in her life and career which she had never addressed because of the fear that shed have her title of being a feminist taken away from her or her stories not being taken seriously. The book took 3 and a half years to make, and now the world can hear what Em Rata has to say. Emily Ratajkowski is an only child, which, through default, made her grow up quickly. She grew up being taught a shame around being beautiful, she was told to never say thank you to somebody whose told you your beautiful, and that she will have to work 10x harder in this world to prove herself to not just be a pretty face.

She became aware that people treated her differently because of her looks very early on in life, she had gone through puberty earlier than everybody else in her year which meant she had boobs before all the other girls in her class. Emily having boobs then instantly labelled her as sexy. When she was young all the adults around her who cared about her worried about how men would look and treat her. At a casting she attended when she was underage the casting director saw her photos and said ‘we always know which girls are having sex by there pictures’. This made Emily seem more attractive to men, despite being 16, if she had that ‘look’.

The photobook Emily refers to this being the most shameful thing to happen in her life, she says she let herself be unprotected and responsible for what had happened. This was another story she didn’t have any intentions on sharing but when Ratajkowski was 19/20 she had gone to New York with her agency where she had then gone alone to meet a magazine photographer who she wanted to impress. A lot of alcohol was given to Emily and many photographs were taken of her on a polaroid while being naked. 9 images were published for the magazine article. Years later after the famous Blurred lines video and Emily Ratajkowski’s debut role in ‘Gone girl’ the remainder of the polaroid’s, the more R rated photographs, where published in a book by the photographer, ‘Emily Ratajkowski, polaroid’s’. Emily had no wrights to this book and legally couldn’t do anything about the situation, this book caused her to face even more backlash, insinuating that Emily wanted attention. This left her feeling ashamed. The essay based novel shares more of Emily’s experiences with her body and is available to purchase online or instore, digitally or paper copy in WH Smiths, Waterstones, Amazon and many more.

For one, if your skin is experiencing free-radical damage and oxidative stress, incorporating products with bananas into your skin-care routine can help. “Bananas contain vitamins A and E, which are good for strengthening the immune system and serving as antioxidants to help prevent damage,”

skin influencer Caroline Hirons. “They’re also a great source of alpha hydroxy acids that can be used for skin brightening.” The banana tree has a unique lipid composition and contains precious molecules that help maintain the skin’s radiance. Basically, dull skin won’t stand a chance. Bananas in skin-care products are also extremely healing, which can be effective for those prone to breakouts the sap that’s extracted from banana peels has been proven to have antimicrobial

Plenty of Plaits

Women have worn braids and plaits for thousands of years all of the world. Plaits can be simple and classic on all sorts of hair. Thin/Thick or Long/ Short. You can also use plaits and braids in a more complicated way which makes the results stunning at the end. There are so many different styles. Box Braids— this style is one of the most iconic styles for afro-textured hair. The hair gets sectioned into squares and worked into individual plaits to achieve the look. You can either use your own hair or have extensions braided in combined with your own hair which gives you long, full locks. They are considered a protective style and can be any length or thickness. However if you have naturally thin or fine hair, opt for smaller box braids so there is less tension on the scalp.

French Braids— a French braid is a classic style. It can be worn to a lot of occasions. Casual days as well as the gym and work. Its easy to style with different outfits in your wardrobe. The French braid can be teamed with a fishtail braid or half-up, half down style. French Braids are popular for a hairstyle people normally do at weddings. Braided ponytail— having braids has a simple route of styling which just involves a hairband. Tying the braids up in a high ponytail can draw the eyes up as well as making the face seem longer. It suits many occasions. Dutch Plaits— an underlying braid style which means the hair will stand out from the head rather than lying flat.

Written and designed by Tierney Rocks

Crochet Braids— the crochet technique allows extra-long braids with a simple and easy way. Similar to a weave, crochet involves first braiding the hair into loose cornrows. A cornrow pattern forms the foundation of the braid. Hair extensions are then threaded and secured using a crochet hook before being plaited into the braid style of choice. Lemonade Braids— Beyoncé made lemonade braids famous through her cover album ‘lemonade’. The style involves creating neat, even and close cornrows that go from left to right instead of straight back. Lemonade braids are a versatile look as they can be any thickness or size on the head. Patterns can be made for example, zigzags. Accessories can be added as well to show creativity and style. Beads and rings can be used.

If you’re looking for a new makeup look that will have you looking best at the Christmas party, Carbon will teach you all the tips you need. Although the trend has only recently become popular, the glitter lips go way back to Burlesque dancers and drag queens using it for stage makeup. Grab your favourite lipstick or lipgloss and apply as normal making sure that you leave a sticky residue as you will use that to pat on the glitter. Using a small flat brush pat the glitter onto the lips. The gloss or lipstick should make the glitter stick but if you’re using a matte lipstick, using a glitter primer or glue will give the same effect.

Sleep is one of the most important factors when aiming to achieve glowing skin. When we sleep, our body boosts blood flow to the skin, which means that you wake up to a healthy-looking glow. Sleep deprivation can cause a reduction in blood flow to the skin surrounding your face. Whilst you’re sleeping, your skin cells also get the opportunity to regenerate. Essentially while we’re sleeping our skin switches into recovery mode. During sleep your body produces collagen which is crucial for keeping the skin plump and smooth. There are a range of creams and serums which claim to boost collagen production however you really can’t beat what sleep does for your skin. Sleeping also gives your skin the chance to destress. When you do not sleep or don’t get enough sleep your cortisol levels ae increased. This is the stress hormone which puts your skin in a pro-inflammatory state. This creates puffiness especially around the eyes.

Water is beyond important especially if you’re keen to get the glow everyone dreams of. Everyone always says to drink water and that it helps with everything, from clearing up your skin to losing weight. This is 100% correct. But do you really understand why this is and how it truly brings out your inner glow? Drinking water improves your skins complexion by helping your digestive system flush out any unwelcome toxins from the body. Effectively, this will improve your skins appearance for healthy and glowing skin. Drinking water comes with many other beneficial factors for your skin such as helping with moisture. When you drink water, it allows your skin to cleanse itself and unclog pores to keep your skin moist and nourished. Another huge positive factor which water can bring for your skin is elasticity. A lack of elasticity in the skin is often caused from dehydration. A quick way to check your skins elasticity is to gently pinch your skin and see if it bounces back. If not, then your body is lacking water so can’t hydrate itself which is necessary to plump up your cells. Another sign to look out for is dark under eyes. This often tells you that you are dehydrated.

What we put into our body is extremely important when wanting to attain glowing skin. Our bodies require a range of vitamins to ensure that we get the best glow possible. There are three vital vitamins which you must have if you want this radiance. Vitamin A is an extremely important nutrient for the skin as it helps support collagen production, controls keratin and helps keep skin strong. Food sources which include vitamin A include sweet potato, eggs, leafy greens, and pumpkin. Another vital vitamin is vitamin B. This vitamin is required for the skin to be able to standardise cell turnover and sebum production as well as competently utilise essential fatty acids. Food sources which include vitamin B include meat, eggs, seeds, and nuts. Vitamin C is possibly the most important when it comes to glowing skin as it helps the healing process of the body, and it is an antioxidant which is responsible for fighting against free radical damage. Food sources include berries, oranges, lemons, and broccoli.

Our mindsets can have a huge impact upon our skin. Positive thinking can work wonders on your outer appearance. When we think negative thoughts the cortisol levels in our body are increased. This is the stress level as said before. Stress is most likely not the root cause of skin problems, conversely, it tends to be a trigger factor for pre-existing conditions such as acne and eczema. It only takes a true smile to get you on the tracks of positive thinking which will instantly allow for your natural beauty to shine through. Your stress levels with therefore be kept low which will help keep your skin clear and glowy. A better mood translates to a healthier look.

Pretty Flushed Cheeks It's a good idea to match the texture to your skin type. If you've got oily skin you might find a matte powder works better. If you're dry, opt for a gel or cream.

A subtle hint of pink, a bold flash of rouge, a natural, dewy tint, a swipe of berry or a cheeksculpting neutral

The right blusher for your skin tone (and preference) can instantly lift your complexion and make all the difference.

Now that we're getting into the colder months, we've been loving the tonal berry shades swept across lips and cheeks.

Depending on the formula you choose, you can work that one shade across lips, cheeks and eye lids. It makes it a convertible and practical colour option, especially if you go for a cream formula, which can be patted in with fingers.

As for finding the right colour, rose and peach hues tend to suit lighter skin tones and deep plums and bright tangerines beautifully complement darker skin tones. Or, if you like to stick to the bronzed look, don't fret - an apricot coloured blush will only amp up warm tones.

Blusher feels a bit left behind against sheeny highlighters and skin-warming bronzers, but it just so happens to be a major beauty trend for winter 2021.

Don't just take our word for it; pro makeup artists have long used blusher to make faces look more energised and awake. However, for the rest of us, we've spotted blush-tinted cheeks reigning supreme on the catwalk, red carpet and the 'gram lately.

Back in 1999, I worked for clickmango.com - the company were selling natural health and beauty products online . The internet hadn’t been around long and it was the first time anyone had seen beauty on the web. I started off looking after the two founders; doing their admin work and running errands initially, but then I started working on their PR. Just as I started getting in to it, they didn’t get funding and the whole company collapsed, so I wasn’t sure what I was going to do after that. However, I had met a French man, whilst working there and despite my mother being horrified, we moved to Paris together. I didn’t have a job so I went to a temping agency and was offered a job at Chanel. It was a maternity cover as PA to the Marketing Director. I did the role for a year, getting to know the business and then I was asked to stay. My boss helped me get in to the PR Team but it wasn’t all glamour! I started in the scientific research centre for heathy skin. I worked there 2-3 years, doing all the sexy things like going to Dermatology conferences and translating the research in to something journalists could write about. Then I went in to the Export PR team - which covered everything; fashion, watches and fine jewellery, skincare and fragrance.”

“What exciting stuff did you get to work on whilst you worked for Chanel?”

“How would you rate your experience working for Chanel?” “Chanel are an amazing company to work for. It’s a really good place to learn PR. But.. it’s not a challenge doing PR for them, because everyone wants to be involved with Chanel! So when you work for another brand, you learn how challenging PR can be.”

“What other Luxury brands have you worked with and how did they compare?”

“If it feels wrong it probably is”

“I moved back to London and worked for LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey) Heading up the Beauty PR team at Givenchy. It was a lot more commercial and cut throat than Chanel! I then moved to a distributor called Kenneth Green Associates (KGA) one of the largest distributors in the UK. A distributor manages several brands and acts as their office in the UK, Marketing, retailer management - getting the brands in to retail stores. It’s a big operation! Their brands included Cartier, John-Paul Gaultier, Jimmy Choo, Bulgari, Issey Miyake, Hermes”

Written and designed by Kat Von Stoth

“Do you remember the amazing Chanel No. 5 ad with Nicole Kidman in the big pink dress? It was directed by Baz Lurhman, who directed Moulin Rouge Well, I worked on that campaign, also worked on the launch of Coco Mademoiselle and Chance and launched Chanel’s own body skincare range.”

“What was it like working on events? And did you get to meet famous people?!” “I was involved with various press days, which would take place twice a year. Also, the launches of three different fragrances for Givenchy, which featured Liv Tyler, Uma Thurman and Justin Timberlake. We would organise a press junket around each different launch, spend time with the A-Lister, broker different interviews. There was a lot of fighting with the rest of the world to get time with that person as everyone wants a piece!Make sure you get the best of your market and you’ve got space. Magazines will want 40 minute interviews with the person and there’s about 20 different countries as well. A 10 minute interview just isn’t going to work.”

Representation Meet Nicola de Burlet, a PR Specialist who spent her career managing the reputations of some of the world’s leading luxury brands “You launched the PR Studio in 2016, What is it like running your own agency away from Luxury brands?” “I worked on my own for 4 years until my business partner joined in 2019. I didn’t think there was much more to learn about PR, but I have learnt a lot about running a business; more than I ever thought I wanted to know about finance, contracts and gut instinct. If it feels wrong it probably is. I’ve always worked in Luxury and now I am working with mass brands. Invisibobble and Foamie - They are fabulous brands, its brilliant working with them - they’re always up for it and it’s great! Luxury brands are a little bit more picky and sometimes that is also great and comes in to the brand DNA and brand adjacency etc. but Invisibobble is always up for it.”

“How do you acquire your clients?” “All of my brands have come to me from someone I’ve worked with in a previous life. So, an interesting point is you never know when you’re gonna meet up with somebody you worked with previously, so it’s always worth keeping your options open!”

“What are your views on Sustainability in the industry?” “What are your tips or advice on going in to PR?”

“Sustainability, organic provinance and natural ingredients is huge in PR; massively under the spotlight for everybody. Beauty and Fashion are two of the worst industries when it comes to sustainability and so now it’s a question when we sign a brand, we always always ask them about their sustainability creds and what they’ve got going on, coz the press will be all over it if they don’t.”

“What was it specifically that led you to move in to PR?”

“PR is a tricky industry, people can be quite difficult and I think you need to be quite resilient. I would also say people have a lot of misconceptions about PR: It tends to get dismissed as being all champagne and canapés. Last week at my event, I was sat on the floor packing goodie bags. You have to be quite resourceful. It is not a glamourus industry. YES, it can be glamorous but the end result is you want to do the best for your client, and it can be quite painful getting that result. So be prepped. Don’t be precious: there will be a lot of menial tasks you won’t enjoy doing, before you get to do the more exciting ones - but it can be incredibly rewarding as well.”

“Be a little bit more pushy”

“Before I got in to PR, I worked in Events. My jobs at Uni were working behind the bar, or in coffee shops and from there, I started working in Events, I thought that was where I wanted to be - I liked it and was good at it. I realised I was quite good with people, I have to say it was a little bit of an accident ending up in PR! I segwayed out of events and in to PR - it does take a specific type of character to want to work in PR - you have to be very good at communicating both face to face and also written - and for me, that’s what I enjoyed doing.”

“If you could speak to your younger self, what would your advice be?”

151

“Ha! Be a little bit more pushy, I wasn’t pushy enough when I was young. At Chanel, they would say to me ‘you have to be patient’ and I just kind of shut up and took that advice, but I think I would have banged on a few more doors.”

The billion dollar bedroom The evolution of Gymshark into the $ 1 billion company it is today

CARBON I CAREERS

Ben Francis, a name well known for his booming success in the fitness industry, but how did he transform Gymshark into the empire it is today? With its whirlwind success in becoming the UK’s fastest-growing company, we look into how it came to be the brand we all know and love today.

Fast forward to 2021, Ben has become CEO once again after stepping down back in 2015, the company’s turnover is better than ever before and is now home to more than 800 employees. The Gymshark Lifting Club is a place known by anyone in the fitness industry. This 55,000 sqft plot includes a state-of-the-art gym featuring more equipment than you could dream of, a 100 person auditorium as well as photography and film studios, any fitness fanatics’ dream destination.

His billionaire mindset began in 2011, creating fully functioning websites to buy and sell number plates, apps on his iPhone to help others get into fitness, and then came Gymshark. At the age of 19, Ben was juggling a degree, a job at Pizza Hut, and his passion for working out, all whilst filling any spare moment developing Gymshark. During the first year, they were making just £500 per day.

“It is without a doubt the best corporate gym and one of the best gyms in the world.”

He soon realised that there was no fitness apparel on the market at that time which catered to his needs. By 2012, Ben was spending hours custom making every item on the Gymshark website from the comfort of his own home, from printing to sewing, he was doing it all. At the time he was obsessed with watching fitness Youtubers so decided to send them their products and await their reviews. Ben was on the influencer marketing hype before it was even a thing so he was always one step ahead of the game. The creation of the ‘Luxe Fitted Tracksuit’ was when it all took off, launching Gymshark into popularity they didn’t know they could reach, so much so that Ben decided to drop out of University to pursue Gymshark full time.

Not only this, Gymshark has just announced the opening of their first-ever bricks and mortar flagship store, located in the heart of London on Regent’s Street and creating over 100 jobs locally. For Gymshark now and going forward, the only way is up.

“we exist to create the tools that help people unlock their full, incredible potential and put their ideas into action” The biggest bump in the road came in 2015’s Black Friday sales. Their website crashed, leaving customers having paid and not receiving orders or orders being sent out to people with zero payments being made. The world of social media turned against the company and was ready and raring to attack. Gymshark lost $143,000 in sales and years of hard-earned trust from their customers. But, this was not the end of Gymshark.

Nikki-Marie is a freelance concert photographer who blew up on social media quite quickly after documenting and updating fans on amazong moments! Read our interview with her here: > How long have you been a photographer, and what got you into concert photography? Nikki-Marie: “As of this year, I have been a photographer for over 13 years! I have always been an artist but I felt like branching out of my medium. I’d always taken photos but just for fun. Then one day I took this photo of the Washington bridge on the way to NJ. The colors and the sunset, it all struck me in a certain way. When I started going to concerts, I would bring my camera even in nosebleeds because I wanted so badly to document every moment. When I was 16 I shot an artist in a small venue in NYC. He saw potential in my work, and told me to keep going no matter what. During the Warped Tour that year, he surprised me with my first press pass and told me I’d be shooting their set. It was my first real gig, and I absolutely fell in love with the feeling. Being in the photo pit and the adrenaline of getting your shot, was something I knew I needed to feel for the rest of my life if I could”

> Which photographer has inspired you? And how have they helped you on the path you’ve gone down? Nikki-Marie: “I take so much inspiration from all the photographers around me honestly. Especially my peers. Seeing new ways to edit and trading advice. I’m also a bit competitive, so If I see someone’s work that inspires me, I immediately become determined to shoot that style until I’ve gotten it to where I like it. I’ve never had a specific photographer in mind, but music tends to be the biggest inspiration behind my styles. For instance, when I see Harry Styles on stage, my mind tends to come up with more retro designs and certain color schemes for the shots!” > How did you learn to take the images that you do now? Was it a long process? Nikki-Marie: “Photography is one of those things that you kind of just need to test yourself on. I had so much trial and era during shoots, and exploring new techniques everytime I photograph. For concerts you should definitely be focused, because the artist’s movements can be unpredictable and you have to follow your intuition!”

157

> What motivates you to take the photographs that you do? Nikki-Marie: “Music has always been my main source of comfort and inspiration. The power behind a good song can change you and inspire you to do incredible things. I always find myself more in tune when I’m shooting live shows, especially with my favorite artists. Because I get to capture them performing my favorite songs.” > What do you like the most and the least about being a photographer? Nikki-Marie: “My favorite thing about being a concert photographer is experiencing how different each show can be. And then getting that ‘money’ shot, and realizing you just captured a photo that’s going to make people fall in love with your work. And the fact that MY art inspires OTHER artists, that is such an incredible feeling. The frustrating thing about photography can be how hard you can be on yourself. Thinking you took weak shots, and comparing yourself to someone else’s photos. It’s very easy to be discouraged if you let yourself.”

Nikki-Marie: “Photography is everything to me. Sadly with my ADHD comes bad short term memory, and it would upset me how fast I could forget important moments. At first I was shooting Love On Tour just for me really, and posting the photos to share with the followers I had. Then when it blew up, I was amazed so many people actually liked my work. I couldn’t be more honored by the support so many people showed me. And how incredibly kind so many people have been to me. I was without live music for over 18 months. Concerts are my safe space, my comfort zone.

And Harry’s shows immediately became that instant serotonin to me. With each show, I felt so at home and so carefree from my reality. I’m so blessed I was able to attend so many.” > Do you have a favourite image that you’ve taken? Or a favourite concert that you’ve taken photographs at? Nikki-Marie: “Honestly it’s so hard to choose. I feel like my favorite photo changes everytime I shoot a show. I also shoot very versatile, and it can be bands one day and a solo artist the next. I’m going to sound a little basic here but Harry Styles concerts have had to have been my absolute favorite to shoot. He’s so energetic and unpredictable!”

> What is one thing you wish you knew before starting up photography? Nikki-Marie: That it can get expensive. Besides doing this incredible touring job and freelance work, I also work 5 other jobs. I wish I managed my time better because I know If I went back I could do it a little less chaotically. > What has been your biggest achievement as a photographer? Nikki-Marie: One of my biggest achievements is being hired for a tour with an artist who I grew up listening to. It’s truly an amazing feeling coming full circle. > What are you aiming to achieve next?

> Do you have any tips or advice for people who are wanting to go into a similar line of work? Nikki-Marie: “My number one rule and tip. NETWORK. If you want to blow your work up, meet and shoot and gain friends and relationships within the industry. It can be scary to approach people, but I guarantee they will respect you coming forward to showcase your work. It shows you have confidence in your ability and talent.”

158

Nikki-Marie: “If I could officially make being a tour photographer my main source of income/ job. I feel now that we’re getting back to a new normal , I have more push and drive in me to excel in my profession. The year and half without music really brought me back to my roots and I realized how easy it was for the world to stop. And even though we paused, I grew older and I know that I need to make my dreams more of a reality and push myself in new ways.”

leading Annie SPILLANE is head cheerleader of solent ravens gameday squad - she has made her way from the bottom to the top through dedication - we asked her about her journey

This interview is for a Head Cheerleaders journey to the top. Let’s start off the questions,

“What was the hardest decision you have ever made for the team to succeed?”

“How old are you and what course do you take?”

So far the hardest decision I have had to make in order for our team to succeed was choosing who should be in our team in order for us to have a successful and memorable Gameday team gaining more recognition for the Ravens and for the other sports days.”

“I am 20 years old and I take the course: Popular Music Performance which I really enjoy.” “What made you go from starting in a cheerleading squad to wanting to become Head Gameday Coach?”

“What mistakes have you made along the way which you have learnt from?”

“Back in sixth form, I used to coach gameday cheer to all years for sports days etc. When I started cheer at university, I joined gameday and I really enjoyed it. I love being part of a team and I loved all aspects of gameday, and so I worked really hard in routines, put lots off effort into my cheering and made sure I was being noticed in order to express my enthusiasm in gameday.”

“One mistake I had made was deciding when we should perform stunts, I thought we could have done it in the first routine but soon realised it was too early with too little time to perform this, which did in a way set back the routine but I then have a substitute dance to fill the gap, and I have learned to always have contingency plans in place for certain issues.”

“Did you cheerlead before the Ravens?” “What’s your favourite part of being head coach?” “I did cheer before the Ravens back in school, just through the years until I then choreographed dance and made chants for everyone to do, and both years our teams won for best cheer and routine.”

“My favourite part of being head coach is the fact that I get to see the girls enjoy the routines and see how grateful and happy they are being on the team, with our routines being asked to perform for them more often.”

“Was it difficult to become head? What did you have to do?”

“What is the best advise you can give a fresher who may want to be in your shoes in a couple years? Work hard, show and prove your enthusiasm, keep up to date with the choreography and make sure you know it all, be confident and load during chants and definitely do not be afraid to contribute ideas to the coaches for routines or for the team. Show kindness and compassion towards your teammates and always make effort for the Ravens as a whole.”

“In order to become head gameday coach, I had to really express my enthusiasm, work hard during routines, make all the effort during games and turning up to training sessions, being a good and helpful person, being kind to everyone and just being myself, alongside being the best I could during the routines and loud during chants.”

Photographer, stylist and creative director, Courtney Paul is a British artist whose style has grabbed the attention of many. The distorted and reimagined proportions that make up the majority of his photography is what makes his style distinguishable. Creatively, Paul has been able to break through the world of fashion photography with his unique post production technique, which has inspired a new approach to imagery and modeling styles, essentially bringing each photo to life, despite their cartoon-like appearance. It is not only his photography that captures life one shot at a time. Paul’s styling coincides with the art that is each photo. Working with personalities and models, such as Aaliyah Ceilia, Maya Jama and Jamilla Strand, each look is crafted in sync with his photography style, creating stunning exhibitions of designer’s work such as Alexander Wang and more recently, Naked Wolfe’s platform shoe collection- whose campaigns run with the ongoing theme of exaggerated proportions to represent the true essence of Paul’s work, and the elevated nature of each product that is shot.

she’s

got the

look CARBON interviewed this model to find out more on what it’s like being a model at her age and the kind of challenges she faces.

Writen and designed by Hema Dixons

Sajedeh Saint Taheri is a 19 year old model who lives in Birmingham. During the interview, we wanted to know why she decided to pursue a career as a model? She told me that growing up, she would always watch tv shows like American’s Next Top Model and Miss Universe and would try and copy the models on the tv. What she would do was borrow her mum’s makeup and outfit and would catwalk up and down her living room floor with them on whilst the rest of her family members sit back and watch her and would clap and video her as she done it. She loved the attention she got when she done it and there and then, she knew she wanted to be a model. She would always tell her family that ‘one day, that would be me’. She told me that nearly every single day she would repeat it over and over again until it came true. She manifested it even though people didn’t believe in her because they thought that modelling was a joke and that she wouldn’t get far as there are many others out there that wants to pursue modelling as well so she stood no chance, but she said she wasn’t going to allow that from stopping her from reaching her dreams. She is known by the public as Sajedeh but only her friends and family know her as Saj as she feels like having two personas allows the public to see what she wants them to see compared to what her friends and family gets to see.

CARBON I CAREERS

168

k Sajedeh didn’t have enough training whilst pursuing her dreams into becoming a model. In the beginning, she would try and send a direct message to different agencies on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter to manage her but they would turn her down. She would then try tagging them in her posts to get their attention but they just kept ignoring her but she didn’t stop there. She later on realised that they were turning her down simply because she didn’t have enough followers and the pictures she would take was always in the same place and weren’t that great so she decided to start taking her pictures whenever she would go out and tried different poses so she can have good content for her Instagram page so that her followers would grow then hopefully, one of the agencies would recognise her. She uploaded her pictures on her Instagram account nearly every day until one day she finally received a direct message from one of the agencies asking her if they could manage her and obviously, she accepted.

The Agency she works with now are in America and they’re called ‘bloc13agency on Instagram’. Being a model is not as easy as it seems. Sajedeh used to think that all she needed to do to become a model was to be pretty and slim. She later realised that there was more to modelling than having a pretty face and a nice body. Modelling has really brought out a whole new level to Sajedeh that she didn’t know she could reach. She’s become more confident, understanding, humble and grateful because she knows being a model is not easy so she tries her best to appreciate every single moment of it. What she enjoys the most about being a model is the way she’s able to express herself and show who she is through what she does and also being able to work with different brands and people from all over the world. She’s only on 26k followers on Instagram and has already modelled for big brands such as Asos, Anne Summers and Peached.

169

Her goal is to model for more bigger brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Calvin Klein. Once she has reached her goal, she’s hoping to open her own modelling agency in a few years’ time. We wanted to know that kind of meals Sajedeh takes or if she workout in order to maintain her good body and she told me she goes to the gym three times a week for 1 hour and drinks 2 litres of water nearly every day. She doesn’t drink fizzy drinks because it makes her feel bloated and she has small portions of meals throughout the day and snacks on fruits. She said there’s no point in looking good on the outside if you’re not trying to stay healthy from the inside.

CAREERS I CARBON

Sajedeh always gets direct messages from upcoming small businesses that asks her to do a collab with them. She tries her best to collab with as many of them as she can. She knows that these small businesses are not popular or big brands that everyone knows but she goes out her way to help them anyways because once upon a time she wished brands or any small businesses would notice her and ask her to collab and now that they are, she is grateful and tries her best to help them when she can. The last thing we wanted to find out from Sajedeh was if being a model plays an impact on her love life. She said how it used to because the guys she was seeing back then didn’t like her posting certain images on her social media so because of that, she had to delete those images even though that’s how she was making her money. She even said she had to take a break from social media because it was affecting her relationships but later on, she realised that if a man can’t accept you for who you are or what you do, then he doesn’t deserve you.

Behind the scene of Sajedeh doing a photoshoot

Modelling is not the only thing Sajedeh wants to be doing for the rest of her life. She enjoys doing it now but she has other goals she wants to achieve and will eventually do modelling as a side job. Being in the industry there’s always competition. Everyone is always trying to be the best and are in it for themselves. Sometimes you feel threatened by that and have those days when you think you’re not good enough but then you remember how far you’ve come so you keep going.

CARBON I CAREERS

170

If Sajedeh could give a few advices to anyone that’s trying to pursue modelling as a career it would be to always have your guard up. Modelling is not for the weak and you’re constantly in competition but if it’s something you have a passion for, then you can do it. People are going to judge you regardless of what you do so never try and please anyone. Be authentic and stay true to yourself no matter what. Always remember to love yourself first because there’s going to be haters who are waiting on your downfall and will try and do or say anything they can to bring you down but don’t let them stop you from achieving your dreams. Never worry if people don’t believe in you because the only approval you really need is from yourself. Most importantly, never do something you don’t feel comfortable with doing.

We interviewed one of the senior bookers at BOSS MODEL MANAGEMENT about their job and what’s it’s like working in the modelling agency and this is what they said…

This is Robyn Bragg she has worked at Boss for seven and half years, she has worked her way up to a senior booker throughout the years. So, we interviewed her and asked her a few questions about her job and that industry of fashion! First ... What does your job role involve? My job is to manage the careers of female models. Everything from their portfolios, to promoting them to clients, booking them paid work and ensuring their chart is organised and full. I specifically work with main board models, who are experienced full-time models versus the younger development/ new face girls.

What influencers/ celebs have you had under your agency that are the most famous and most people would know?

What’s it like helping and working with those in the industry? Our biggest fashion models would be Karen Elson (Google her, she was one of the original supermodels in the 90s), she mentions Debs our owner in her recent vogue video interview. I can send you a link if you can’t find it/need it. Edward Wilding. One of his first jobs as a model was with Kate Moss for Versace. Nick Rae, lived in NYC for years, did campaigns for Paco Rabanne (he was one of the One Million aftershave guys) and Tom Ford. Walked shows for Gucci etc in Milan. Toni Bagley, recently shot River Island campaign which is in stores now, did a Burberry campaign a couple years ago. She’s also shot campaigns for Massimo Dutti, Pepe Jeans, and an editorial for Vogue Spain.

Although I’ve worked with the same agency for 7.5yrs I know that model bookers all experience the same highs and lows. We all have the same irritations and frustrations with models so it’s nice to work alongside people who do the same job. Model wise, the grateful ones are wonderful, the divas make the job really difficult and frustrating. Unfortunately, it’s always the divas who tend to get lucky and land the big money clients… typical! How did u get into this job? I watched a channel 4 show called The Model Agency on channel 4 when I was younger, and it was the first time I even thought of it as a job. Years later after unit I wsaw a job ad for reception/front of house at Boss so I decided to apply but also try all the model agencies in Manchester too. So, I printed off my CV and all the addresses of the other agencies, got the train into Manchester and spent the day knocking on doors. I had no appointments and pretty much all of them didn’t have current job positions available, but I went anyway. The job I’d seen at boss had already been filled but I managed to speak with the office manager, and she kept my cv on file, 4 months later I got a call, had an interview and got the T V desk job as a booker.

What’s your favourite part about your job? It’s exciting to discover a girl, help develop her look, skill and portfolio and watch her career take off. I love when a model books her first big campaign. Remember the girl I found on Tik Tok? The red head from Scotland who I Face timed at your house that time because other agencies wanted to sign her? She lives in Paris now for university and I booked her a big campaign for Collection makeup before I came away, the client flew her back from Paris to Liverpool to shoot it yesterday. The images will be in every Superdrug and Boots in the world. She was so happy and excited. THATS my favourite part!

Recognisable for his art style (a fusion of Japanese and American techniques) in 2002, Hardy stepped into the world of fashion when he licensed his art designs to be made into a clothing line. In two short years the Ed Hardy line exploded onto the runway and became one of the most desired and recognizable brands of the noughties, and now, he’s back. Recently, the resurgence of Y2K fashion and pop culture has meant that brands that were once thought to be a thing of the past, are back with a vengeance. Some of the most influential brands of the era and this trend include Juicy Couture, Von Dutch, and, Ed Hardy. The comeback of Ed Hardy has been so momentous that he’s even referenced in lyrics, if you’re a Playboi Carti fan, or just have TikTok, you’ll know the famous line “I got on Ed Hardy she got on stilettos”. The man that links the big brands of the 2000s together however, is Christian Audigier, a name you’ll see on a lot of Ed Hardy pieces. In just two years Audigier succeeded in taking the fashion industry by storm and making Ed Hardy a household name. Coined the king of the designer T-shirt, he first received national recognition when he put Von Dutch Originals on the map by using the idea of pinstripe designs, which he developed into an international brand. In the noughties, the fashion sported by many celebrities and university ‘it’ girls consisted of a lot of Audigier’s designs, most notably graphic T-Shirts and trucker hats. His association to Von Dutch lasted a little over three years before Audigier, true to his passion for cars and motorcycles, decided to start his own company once he was granted the exclusive rights to work with the designs of Don Ed Hardy.

Let’s delve deeper into the resurgence of Y2k brands. A lot of the key pieces that are trending right now and are slowly infiltrating mainstream retail all have one thing in common: they’re quintessentially American. Ed Hardy, Harley Davidson and Von Dutch are all tied to American Biker culture. Pop culture is experiencing a rebirth of the Americana trend. Whilst the UK had Cool Britannia going on, The US had Americana. So instead of Miss Sixty, Union Jacks plastered everywhere, Kate Moss and the Gallaghers, they had Bikers, Cowboys, American flags, and Paris Hilton. In a time where Patriotism has been recontextualised to indicate right leaning political views, and not very cool from a Gen Z point of view, it’s interesting to see the fashion industry today (whether you consider the values to be left or right is up for debate) adopt a trend that was left in the 2010s. Irony is the immediate thought that comes to mind however that reading has possibly become misconstrued. So where does this leave Ed Hardy. The pieces adorned by many seem to be on the borderline between cool and ironic, as a lot of fashion trends start out. This seems to have been the view of new creative director, Kevin Christiana, who apparently cringed a little when first faced with the prospect of relaunching the brand before realising it’s potential. The soft relaunch of Ed Hardy kept the original authenticity of the creative’s unique artwork and made it tasteful by today’s standards (rhinestones upon rhinestones - but in a chic way). The question to be asked is in the age of e-commerce with giants like Depop dominating the scene, will Gen-Z be more inclined to shop the new releases of the brand from mainstream retailers like Urban Outfitters - which are often sold at a heavier price point. Or, will they steer more towards the vintage pieces, some of which are sold much cheaper on websites like eBay as they may be deadstock, or simply not in high demand.

What exactly is a virtual stylist? In lockdown last year this trend started and it’s only grown in popularity since. To be a virtual stylist, all you need to do is find a collage app such as Shoplook or Picsart and piece together your favourite outfits. Add a snazzy watermark, create a styling Instagram page and get to sharing your work! It sounds so simple, yet young creatives have been getting freelance jobs and internships just from these Instagram accounts dedicated to outfit collages. Even if you don’t feel you want a job in styling or even fashion at all, it’s still a great way to practice putting your own outfits together and help fuel your creative spirit. You’ll feel like a true on-trend fashionista after just a few days of using these apps and before you know it maybe Gigi Hadid will be calling you up asking for street style tips. So how can you help your account blow up on Instagram as a virtual stylist? Firstly, you need solid, popular but not over-saturated hashtags. Some of the most effective tags for these pages include #instagramstylist, #styleinfluencer, #styleinspo and #wardrobeconsultant. Pair these with well-placed and thought-out collages, a catchy username, alluring bio and professional profile pic. Your account will grow and grow the more and more effort you put into it. Why not spend your Sunday afternoons working on reels for your account to push your talent out even further? Some ideas for reels or tiktoks could be “Ways to style ...”, “Styling my followers”, “Styling you for a party/dinner/date/day out/ drinks/Christmas etc”. If you have the eye for fashion, embrace it and share it with others who may be inspired by your talent. You may even get a job out of it...

THE WOMBATS-FIX YOURSELF, NOT THE WORLD The Wombats are bringing out their fifth album called ‘Fix Yourself, Not The World’. The albums is being released on January 7th. Their song ‘If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You’ which is about the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on communication in relationships. The album was recorded during multiple Coronavirus lockdowns. It was produced by Jacknife Lee, Paul Meaney, Mike Crossey, Gabe Simon and Mark Crew. It has been said that the three members weren’t ever in the same room during the album process (due to COVID-19) as Murphy is based in Los Angeles, Knudsen is in Oslo and Haggis is in London. They went through the album making process communicating through zoom, the same as many people that were keeping contact during lockdown. They recorded their parts seperately and sent their own files to their producers. It was noticed that 2020 and 2021 had put serious strain on relationships and people were struggling. COVID-19 has affected so many people in many different ways and in this case, it had interfered with so many relationships. Murphy had claimed that in his opinion, ‘If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You’ makes you think about whether or not it was the circumstances putting strain on relationships causing problems, or if it was just shedding light on problems already there and bringing them to the surface.

PUT YOUR THE COMEBACK OF VINYL AND HOW TO GET YOURSELF INVOLVED Why are vinyl popular? A lot of people feel that vinyl offer a more personal experience and more of a connection to music as it allows the listener to detach from technology which is something that the digital music experience does not provide. Another reason that this format of music is popular is that there’s something that the majority of people find special about being able to hold a phsyical copy of your favourite music. It’s an active experience and it allows more appreciation for the work and for the record. Some people purely collect to say that they have a vinyl collection and to eventually sell them on and make a profit.

Tips on how to start a vinyl collection

Written and designed by Emma Bell

The best way to start a vinyl collection is to buy your favourite album on vinyl and to play it. You’ll immediately feel a surge through your body as you hear the record as it should be played. It may then be best to start buying vinyl versions of the albums that you love every single track on and that you could listen to from start to finish. A lot of people find small record stores near them and go in without looking for anything in patricular, and so when they come out with a record they’ve never heard before they have a bounce of excitement in their step; this is another way to grow your collection somewhat quickly. Second-hand, used, vinyl will usually be cheaper than brand new vinyl and therefore it’s more affordable. However, vinyl collections may take a while to expand, it’s nice to buy one at a time and to take time to appreicate each vinyl and how the music sounds being played in a new way.

RECORDS ON How to take care of your vinyl collection Taking care of your vinyl collection is vital; it’s important that your vinyls are treated gently and with care. It may help to get ahold of a vinyl cleaning kit that will include a vinyl cleaning spray and a micro fiber cloth. A micro fiber cloth will ensure that the vinyl will not be scratched during the cleaning proccess. You can also purchase plastic protective casing for your vinyls so that they stay safe when on display or being stored. This prevents water damager or tears from ruining their packaging. It is also important to make sure that when storing your vinyl, you allow them to sit upright as laying them down on top of one another can cause them to crack or become warped.

Nina Louise Home Stylist // Creator // Blog Writter

Nina Louise is a home stylist, creator and blog writer with 34.2k followers who is a born and raised Manchester girl. She bought her first property in 2016 and had the idea to start an Instagram account documenting her move and her designing of the property. She has followers including Nicole Corrales, Amber Jepson, Lucy Carter and Maddie Chester. Since starting in 2016 she has gained a lot of followers and has made this into a career for herself earning quite good money and getting lots of brand deals with brands such as Dyson. Below she talks about how she got into this industry, what her job involves and what it’s like to be a Lifestyle influencer.

When did you start @nina_moves_in ? And how come you wanted to start it? I started my IG account when I bought my first home. As it is a renovated, grade two listed building, the work required was pretty extensive. I was initially given a move-in date of December 2016, but after a number of setbacks, the development company ended up delaying completion for a further 12 months. I had already started to buy key pieces (such as a TV, sofa, mattress etc.), so decided to start an Instagram account in May 2017 to document building progress and exciting purchases for my home. This helped me channel my energy into preparation instead of feeling sad and frustrated about the delays. What are pros and cons about your job? Pros: The feeling of working hard on a project and being able to share it with 1000’s of people who are equally excited about your project. From the planning and mood board stage, to the end result - I really love documenting it, and getting lots of lovely, positive feedback at the end. It makes the hard work feel even more rewarding. Working with some incredible international and national brands, and being able to enhance my home with their products/ services. I feel very lucky! Being able to help and inspire my followers with their own homes. As I am a creative person, design generally comes naturally... but for others, it’s very hard to imagine a project or idea of their own - so I love being able to support my following with this.

Written and designed by Nicole Hardy

Cons: It is extremely time consuming. I took on a full-time role in July, and since then I’ve not been able to dedicate as much time as I did over the lockdown periods. From working in marketing and social media, I have learnt that the average person doesn’t realise how much time it takes to create and edit content, upload, create captions, engage and answer DM’s. It’s literally a full-time role in itself. The guilt I feel when I don’t post. It causes me quite a bit of anxiety when I don’t stay up to date. It’s crazy how much you miss when you take a couple of days off. What’s it really like to be an “influencer”? I love it! It’s so much fun, and SO rewarding. I love the feeling that others follow and admire my home and content. I work so hard on it, that I’m so glad it’s received positively. As previously mentioned, it’s extremely time consuming and does take a great deal of effort - but as they say, nothing worth having comes easy.

CARBON I ENTERTAINMENT

How long did it take you to grow your account and start getting brand deals? I grew my account to around 8,000 followers over the space of 2-3 years, as I didn’t really use it often - just now and again with the odd update or seasonal photo. It wasn’t until March 2020, and the beginning of COVID-19, when I started to put daily efforts into my account, and really growing an audience. The lockdowns and furlough periods gave me much more time to spend on content and taking photographs, and I went from 8,000 to 30,000 plus within 10 months. Brand deals began around the back end of 2019, starting with home accessories and candles. Not long after this, I landed a collaboration with Dyson (for a vacuum), which was one of my most exciting partnerships! Since growing, I’ve worked with brands such as Dunelm, William Wood Mirrors, Rustoleum, Bedfolk, Coverstyl, Crosswater and Whitemeadow. If someone was to ask how to get into this line of business, what would you tell them ? I actually get asked this question quite a lot, and I would always advise four main things: patience, time, effort and engagement. Patience - growing a following doesn’t happen overnight; it takes a while but it’s so worth it when you finally find your flow. Time - spending time on the platform is key; ensuring you’re aware of current trends and ideas, other home accounts and what they offer, and consistently posting your own content. Effort - take time to perfect your content. Posting any old photo doesn’t work - it has to be well thought out and captured professionally. Engagement - this is not only about engaging with your own followers (replying to comments/ DM’s/ offering help), but it’s also about engaging with other accounts and sharing the love and support amongst the interior blogger community. What exactly does this job involve? In summary... I’d say it takes a creative eye to come up with ideas and appealing, scroll-stopping content for followers. Being able to offer content that other accounts don’t - finding your ‘niche’. Posting images, reels, guides, stories etc. Keeping up to date with DM’s and questions from followers or potential collaborations. Working with brands and small businesses to help promote their products/ services. And most importantly, having a huge passion for what you do!!

A n interview with Gabriel

of

neteru Gabriel Baraldi is the frontman of new Southampton band ‘Neteru’. The band is currently working on their first EP which is due to be released some time next year. In this interview, we get a look at what Neteru is all about.

So, Neteru is a new band. Can you tell us a little bit about the genre that you fit in to? “We don’t, simply put. We literally do our own thing which we think sounds great and fits the theme of the song. If we had to be put into a genre it would probably be progressive metal or fusion metal, with each of the band members taking inspiration from different genres” Who is in the band and what roles do they have? “So we have myself, I play Bass and do the vocals. Kai Jones is our talented drummer, Pedro is our lead guitarist and Oli Clamp plays keyboard but also does some vocals himself.” What would you say influences the music that Neteru makes? “Each of us have our “big” band influences. For example, for me it’s Thornhill and Loathe. For our drummer (Kai) it’s Gojira and for our guitarist (Pedro) it’s Periphery. Lyrically, I take inspiration from the natural world and natural processes and landscapes I learn from my university course. “ You are currently working on your first EP. What can we expect and when can we expect it? “Crazy, disgusting and complex metal music. The songs will be an atmospheric journey ranging from being washed ashore in a beautiful island to a colossal fight between two omnipotent beings. We don’t want to rush things so I will just say some point mid to late 2022.” How did the band all meet each other? “Me and the drummer (Kai) have been best friends since we were 11. We met when I started drumming on his back in maths lesson, so funnily enough music brought us together. At college he met our keyboardist (Oli) and one day me and Kai drunk texted Pedro on a night out to join our band after seeing an ad of him playing guitar on Instagram. Surprisingly, he said yes.”

Written and designed by Ollie Iles

How does the band work on music when you all live in various parts of the country? What challeneges do you face with this? “It’s very difficult and makes the writing process slower. When we got together we were insanely productive and the ideas bounced off of each other. That being said, we all have recording equipment so we try to keep going that way and through group calls.”

CARBON I ENTERTAINMENT

Gabriel, Kai and yourself have been in a band before together. What have you learnt? How do you think you have grown since then? “In mine and Kai’s previous band, I did drums and vocals and Kai did lead vocals. So firstly we had that lineup change to instruments that fit us better, and most importantly I’ve learned to stand out. I had a realisation one day when I was chilling with Kai and Oli in the park late at night… music simply hits different when parts are unexpected and a unique experience. Before I wanted to fit the early metalcore mould, now I’ve realised that if we do some Frankenstein type mixture of the genres we love, sprinkled with aspects of anime, games and literally whatever we like (such as nature in my case), we can create something that will make us be unique in a genre that is in dire need for that. “ Do you think Covid has affected the way that the band works? How so? “I wouldn’t say so greatly, as a majority of our time together was spent outside lockdowns. If anything, the very first lockdown encouraged me to pick up my bass that was collecting dust as I had so much spare time.” How do you plan on growing as a band? “Finish our EP, record some music videos, gig, advertise and just have fun. Growing a community is also so important, as fans who enjoy our music are enjoying a large part of us. I think this is so crucial to a band being respected and succeeding in the scene.” Where can people follow what you guys are doing? “At the moment, you can follow our band page on Instagram where we have some teasers up and some memories from when we all met for the first time as a band, we will of course continue to upload much more content, so stay tuned. And once we have more material we will naturally make a YouTube channel too. We’re currently working on strengthening the rest of the songs that we have already worked a lot on for our EP. As I said, we’re perfectionists but the wait will definitely be worth it.”

A look into the debut album of up and coming American singer and songwriter Ashlyn wilson also known as Ashe. After releasing her EP ‘The Rabbit Hole’ in June 2018 and Moral of the Story: Chapter 1 in April 2019, Moral of the Story was used in the Netflix Original movie “To All The Boys: P.S. I still love you” in February 2020, which caused the song to go viral. She ended up releasing another version of the song as a duet with Niall Horan, which gained her a lot more attention. She also did a performance of Moral of the Story with Niall Horan on November 7th at the Royal Albert Hall for a livestream that donated profits to “We Need Crew” which once again brought a lot more attention to her.

Written and designed by Emma Bell

On May 7th, Ashe released her debut album called “Ashlyn”, a primarily pop album with hints of the 70s, which consists of fourteen tracks. These tracks detail grief, divorce and general feelings of a break-up; The album allows us to take a step into Ashe’s life and allows us to relate to her a lot more. Moral of the Story is centered around her marriage at twenty-three which ended with a divorce and when asked about how the song came about by Genius, Ashe told them “It was like within weeks of me filing for divorce, we wrote this record. Yeah. Timely. Around Valentine’s day, I think. I feel like I knew I needed to write the song.”. Moral of the Story has reached out to fans who have been in unhealthy relationships of their own and Ashe shared an anecdote with Insider, “One of them told me that in the middle of my concert, during ‘Moral of the Story,’ they had gathered together with this one friend that was in an abusive

relationship and convinced her to leave the relationship. At my freaking show. I’m like, ‘This song is not about me anymore. It goes way past me.’”. Ashe has a lot of care for her fans and constantly reminds them of her love for them in social media posts as she details how grateful she is for each of them. When asked about the meaning of Till Forever Falls Apart, Ashe told Rolling Stone, “This song, while sounding like the most romantic song I’ve ever written, is about acceptance as well. The lyrics, ‘I’m gonna love you knowing we don’t have forever’ are about how it’s more important to have had the chance to love than to stay in love.” The song was written with Finneas who also produced the track and performed on it with Ashe; Finneas is also a close friend of hers. When speaking about the meaning of the song in relation to her friendship with Finneas, Ashe told Variety “So often romantic love isn’t ‘I’ll love you forever till I die. It’s much more like, Finneas is going to be in my life forever, and I’m going to love him forever til I die. The song is much more like a friendship love; it’s deeper than romance.” Ashe performed her debut London headline show’s back in September 2021 (both shows sold out fairly quickly) and she will start “The Fault Line Tour” on April 4th 2022 with over 40 shows. She has expressed excitement for this tour over and over again on her social media channels which has only built more suspense for the tour.

An Interview With

An interview with the creative director of ‘Ears Peeled’ a new, upcoming venture for young artists to find exposure.

‘Ears Peeled’ 1) What is ‘Ears Peeled?’

“Ears Peeled aims to be a platform on the Isle of Wight for musicians and creatives. It’s clear that the talent and ambition on the island is rife, yet the opportunities are sometimes limited here. At the moment I’m creating this platform by showcasing local artists through in person events and through video content. The Isle of Wight really deserves its own thriving music and creative scene, and the elements are already here to make that happen, so I guess we are just trying to connect the dots. I would love to inspire more young likeminded people to stay on the island as they grow into their creative roles rather than feel like they have to flee the island in order to reach some real opportunity.” 2) What influenced you to start ‘Ears Peeled?’ “This is a really hard question! The whole idea actually happened overnight and then it was just like ‘right, this is what I’m doing now.’ I guess I’ve always been an avid gig goer, and I’ve always respected and been envious of other places having this dedicated scene and community based solely around music and creativity. I have a lot of friends that are musicians and artists here on the island, and I knew that if I created something that acted like a ‘hub’, then it would definitely be possible to create our own thriving community here. There is so much talent and potential here, it’s ridiculous. And I think people are realising

that now. I really did feel like something needed to happen and be created, so if it wasn’t going to, it was only right I gave it a go myself.” 3) In your opinion, do you think your events help create exposure for young artist?

“Yeah I think so, I mean it’s very early stages for EarsPeeled at the moment, and we are mainly putting on events at one venue. But I feel like we are putting on artists that haven’t necessarily been able to perform to a wider audience before, and this audience is definitely growing. Also bringing much more established acts to the island and having local artists support them at a show is really helping local artists connect with the industry and build relationships with artists that might be a few pegs in front of them.” 4) What is your end goal for ‘Ears Peeled?’ “I wish I knew, I don’t really have one right now because of the amount of different ideas and pathways we could go down. But it’s big, and very exciting. I’ve met and am in talks with a lot of very valuable people which could help turn Ears Peeled into something bigger than I ever expected. But right now I think Ears Peeled’s focus is to carry on creating a thriving local scene and helping musicians and creatives to find more opportunities.”ww

203

5) Do you aim to become a large-scale platform for young artists to benefit from?

“Yes, absolutely. How we do it as of it yet is a bit blurry as there are so many different paths we can go down. But with connections I have made through this I have no doubt that one day Ears Peeled will be a very well known organisation that benefits many.” 6) Will ‘Ears Peeled’ be the face of underground events? “Haha, that would be cool, wouldn’t it. Let’s see.” 7) What challenges do young artists face that you can help to overcome? “I could go on forever with an answer to ‘what challenges do young artists face’, but I think if I just pick one answer that would be ‘getting noticed’ - then I feel like we can definitely help with this. From showcasing artists in person, to doing interviews and short films through video, to introducing them to more established artists, booking agents, and indie labels. I really believe that soon EarsPeeled will have the power behind it to really put young artists from the Isle of Wight on the map. In the last year alone the Isle of Wight gave birth to currently one of the most talked about bands in the world - Wet Leg. How many more Wet Legs could be hidden here that just need to be found? That’s what we believe we can help with.”

Manolo Blahn

2021 marks the 50th anniversary of Manolo Blahnik: Synonymous with classic, el timeless design, carbon takes a look at the creative genius who gives his name to this luxury brand. Luxury footwear brand Manolo Blahnik is a privatelyowned family-run company that celebrates their 50th Anniversary this year.

When in his 20’s Manolo went on to study art and set design in Paris. His good friend Paloma Picasso introduced him to then-director of the Met Costume Institute Diana Vreeland, who spotted his potential in his sketches from ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’. She was particularly impressed with his sketch featuring a high-heeled sandal with ivy and cherries, and thus suggested he focussed his talents on designing footwear specifically.

Manolo was born in the Canary Islands to a Spanish Mother and Czech father.

His mother’s family owned a banana plantation in the island city of Santa Cruz de la Palma, where he grew up.

“My shoes are special shoes for discerning feet”

Manolo’s designs were elegant, sleek, and sophisticated. He did not subscribe to the bulky or chunky footwear, fashionable in the ’70s, and considered them “boorish and inelegant”. Instead, he concentrated on encouraging a much more refined, very feminine shoe. His first boutique was opened in Chelsea, London in 1969 and he is now globally recognised for timeless, classic styles and today Manolo Blahnik boasts flagship stores in London, New York, Paris, Geneva, Tokyo, Dubai, and Moscow (to name but a few!)

Manolo’s Mother was a big influence in his fashion career. She studied fashion magazines and started to make her own shoes, learning her craft from a local Canary Island cobbler. Much of Manolo’s love for delicate, feminine fabrics such as brocade and satin came from his Mother’s own designs.

Blahnik has gained notoriety with a flurry of celebrity admirers in his 50-year long career. In 1977 Bianca Jagger wore Manolos as she entered her 30th birthday party at Studio 54 in New York, whilst riding a white horse. In 1994, Princess Diana wore Manolos when she appeared at a Vanity Fair party in “The Revenge Dress” the night it was revealed her husband had confessed to his adultery.

As a boy growing up in the Canaries, Manolo’s first experience with footwear was crafting tiny bespoke shoes for the locals: the lizards who wandered into his garden! The shoes were individually crafted from sweet papers. As a young man, Manolo’s parents wanted him to be a diplomat and enrolled him at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, to study Politics and Law. However, Manolo soon changed to Literature and Architecture.

To this day, at the age of 79, Manolo is still very much hands-on with his brand, sketching each design himself. He also regularly visits Italy and keeps close relationships with manufacturers to add his own personal touches. 2021 marks the 50th Anniversary of Manolo Blahnik and to celebrate this momentous occasion, Manolo has designed a gold capsule collection. You may well spot their distinctive elegance in “Gossip Girl”, “The Devil wears Prada” and most recently in Lady Gaga’s “House of Gucci”. The iconic blue “Hangisi” stilettos she wore to marry her ‘Mr. Big’ in the first feature film was even re-released by Manolo Blahnik as part of a limited collection to mark the film’s 10th anniversary. In an episode of the original series, Carrie is held up at gunpoint by a mugger who not only steals her striking purple sequin Fendi “baguette” handbag, but also her Manolo Chaos sandals! “Please Sir they’re my favourite pair” she pleads! An Artist that speaks to Gen Z: Sophie Tea Sophie graduated with a first-class degree in Business Management at Birmingham Aston university in 2016. She had a job lined up in the business industry. However, a trip to India when she was 22 changed all that.

Written and designed by Sofia Wells

Just like most new graduates, Sophie was struggling to fund this trip, her method of payment for accommodation was painting a mural over graffiti on hostels. It was at that moment Sophie felt happy and surprised how good her drawing of a multi-coloured cow (a sacred animal in India) was. This kickstarted her creative journey to the point of her quitting her job before it has even started, to pursue a life as an artist. After moving back home to pursue her dream, she uploaded a photo of the colourful cow mural onto Facebook, prompting her friends and family to ask for pet paintings. It was then she began her entrepreneurial journey by developing a ‘Tinder for Art’ app, as Sophie wasn’t convinced she could make money as an artist.

CARBON I ART & CULTURE

Now 26, Sophie went on to forge a successful career as an artist by building her business through social media. Her self promotion gradually increases her prices and working to capacity. However, her self promotion methods slowed the business in 2017. It was then she was approached by a friend setting up her body jewellery brand Gypsy Shrine. Photos of her posing at Coachella with glitter, gems and jewels stuck across her bare chest went viral. At the time she was commissioned to paint animals, but after having started a now-famous festival trend, it saw her social media following shoot through the roof, as it does so every festival season now. This also helps boost her now multimillion-dollar art business. Feeling restrained by animal paintings, Ms Tea ventured out to abstract art by pursuing the hashtag 100DayAbstractChallenge, which saw her post one piece of original art every day for 100 days. The first person to comment ‘buy’ would be able to buy the art. Due to the demand for her paintings, she decided to create a link putting the prices up and offering the painting for 100 hours. She made $37,000 in half an hour from it. The artist, who works 15 hours a day, 7 days a week, is also attracting generation Z by offering monthly instalments for the paintings, which doubled her business turnover profit. Sophie Tea breaks the traditional gallery route by selling solely through Instagram to her 200k+ following, she is disrupting the art industry and creating an art brand that is accessible to all. Sophie has exhibited in London, L A, Sydney, Hong Kong, Miami, and Tel Aviv. There are galleries and studios in the heart of both Sydney and London (Carnaby Street) and her work has received rave reviews from The Sunday Times for her bold and creative masterpieces.

In all her paintings there are vibrant colours, especially pink. Sophie claims to be playing with irony using pink so much as to what it means to be a woman in modern times. “Girls do what the hell they want to do,” she uses pink to represent how proud she is to be a girl. Sophie Tea now paints vibrant and powerful art which celebrates the female form and champions body diversity, Sophie Tea prides herself on art that makes people feel good and has created a relentless demand for her artworks that sell within seconds. Make sure to visit her gallery located on Carnaby Street. It is open 7 days a week and is a free thing to do in London. With sofas and photo booths, the interactive gallery is a place to relax. One of the most instagramable venues in London.

a look into the upcoming 2022 London Textile Fair, taking place from January until July 2022, based in Central London. The London Textile Fair exhibits creations from many artists that allows them to show their work to influential buyers and designers from major retail stores and contract manufacturers. This is a great chance for buyers to establish new connections with many young budding artists. One of my favourite things I love about this fair is that the layout of it. It is completely equal to letting everyone have a chance to show off their talents, giving no one an advantage.

Written and designed by Abigail Prowse

This event also has a lot of sponsors and partners that keep the event going biannually. For example, Ecotextile news, Fashion Network and Apparel Insider. With these sponsors, there is a lot of connections to make whilst you are there.

Written about a previous years event, he says “It was a great experience, it opened whole new avenues of ideas.” Another review that caught our eye was one written by Abi, a student at Roche Fashion Design, who speaks about her experience and what she learned whilst she was there. “Getting to meet different awesome textile designers was amazing Learning the process of fabric testing etc was exciting for me & meeting new people I can source textile fabric from directly was the highlight for me... It was a great experience.” Taken from these reviews alone, the London Textile Fair is a great opportunity to find new artistry or showcase your work to prospective buyers and manufacturers. Definitely not an event to miss!

There are many reviews on this event that speak highly of the organisation, artistry and experience, one of these being written by Carl John who is the owner of Gear Up Nation LTD.

Haute Coutu

After years of the rise of fast fashion and most recently, the impact of the pandemi a break from our screens. But with a revival for love of looking at vintage and o has made a viral come back. Haute couture originally was first credited to designer Charles Frederick who opened the first haute couture fashion house established in Paris in 1858. This was made around the time of the Queen of France - Marie Antoinette who had personal hand-made garments to fit only her, which famously carried on throughout fashion history. Whilst previously looked at as an upper-class quality of life, the idea of Haute couture is changing from expensive personalised garments to an art form. IRIS VAN HERPEN Famous artist Iris Van Herpen has been an haute couture designer since 2007. Using a range of multi technologies, Iris pushes the qualities of sustainability in her work using sustainable methods and fabrics as a “second-nature”. “Each collection is a quest to venture beyond today’s definition of a garment, exploring new forms of expression for a more meaningful, diverse and conscious fashion for the future.”

The ethereal styled garments provide a sense of future-facing originality and feminism empowerment. Inspired and influenced by creative women directives, Herpen focuses famously on beautiful muses such as Scarlett Johansson, Lady Gaga and Naomi Cambell. Herpen expresses femininity through couture with individuality and a fearless approach. Herpen is also majorly inspired by Philip Beesley’s work Hylozoic Ground. An installation of acrylic fronds that move as if they were breathing. Covered in sensors and microprocessors this allows the structure to move through the environment and the air.

Including her feministic approach and use of muses, Iris then transforms this celestial work around her models using cut out properties and the mould of the feminine body to structurally create extravagant designs and artistry. “I think the ultimate attraction for me is to keep nature as part of my design process from start to finish” Along with the inspiration from nature, Herpen also has stated to be inspired by the idea of dance and movement to create a freeing silhouette with her clothing. “I have a dance background and I guess it’s the idea of the body itself and the way it moves and the transformative power within it that inspires me. I have the woman in my mind as a dancer and I look at the way the body moves. That transformative aspect and the emotion within motion is something that I’m trying to catch within my work”

A definitive rundown on the Fisheye lens, to level up your own photography and take your imagination to the next level. Because who wants to take plain photos anyway? The standards on Instagram have us wondering how we can level up our photography. We often see Pinterest full of imaginative and cool photos and wonder, what if we were to just break out of the mould and try something new. A massive part of photography and how our images turn out is the equipment we use, and more specifically the lenses. Most cameras are fitted with a regular 18-55mm lens, which accounts for our images taken with a square frame, and no distortion. Whilst we all love a good shot taken with these, maybe it’s time to try something new. Fisheye lenses are something commonly used in music photography, and more specifically; Album covers. Maybe because of their funky distortion, or because they are eye-catching, either way, they’ve been around for some time.

“Fisheye lenses are something commonly used in music photography, and more specifically; Album covers. Maybe because of their funky distortion, or because they are eye-catching, either way, they’ve been around for some time.“ The first Fisheye lens was created by physicist Robert W. Wood, he invented what would be known as the first Fisheye lens. He used a bucket full of water, a pinhole camera, mirrored glass and a lot of light.

“Nowadays, you might be familiar to seeing the fisheye lens used by artists such as Harry Styles on his album cover for Fine Line” The first glass Fisheye lens sold for a whopping $27,000 (£19,623.470). 5 years later after the first Fisheye lense hit stores for consumers, and so birthed the use of them by music photographers and mainstream media photographers.

The Beatles famously used the lense because of the distortive effects it provides, they liked the “larger than life” effect. Nowadays, you might be familiar with seeing the fisheye lense used by artists such as Harry Styles on his album cover for Fine Line or in fashion photography and pop culture. Here are some affordable Fisheye lenses you can get, to play around with at home.

A look into Vivienne Westwood’s influence on the punk-rock movement.

Westwood created popular looks worn by bands such as ‘The Sex Pistols’. Westwood liked to challenge fashion and make it her own, she is known for her notorious designs which include; ‘nippled’ t-shirts with bunched up fabric as a way of clothing yet unclothing the body.

Westwood Vivienne Westwood was born in a village in Derbyshire in 1941, she was the daughter of a factory worker and cotton weaver. She then moved to London with her family as a teenager where she then trained to be a primary school teacher. Having then split with her first husband, it was meeting and later working with art student Malcolm McLaren (born in London in 1946) that gave Westwood a focus for her restless idealism, as well as the opportunity to harness a natural passion for dressmaking. Towards the end of the 1960s, Westwood and McLaren created clothes that referenced youth culture’s recent past, selling rock’n’roll fashion in a shop unit at 430 King’s Road in Chelsea. In 1974, the shop took on its most notorious identity: ‘SEX’, with Westwood and McLaren designing fetish wear that they sold to prostitutes, those with ‘underground’ sexual tastes, and young punks brave enough to take a new ‘out there’ look out onto the streets. The pair enjoyed shocking people, designing garments and shoes that referenced ‘deviant’ sexual practices, including rubber dresses and stilettos with spikes. In 1976, 430 King’s Road was redesigned and then renamed ‘Seditionaries: Clothes for Heroes’. The collection remained in the same controversial territory as the clothes sold in ‘SEX’, featuring the likes of bondage trousers.

Other key looks that expressed a new ‘distressed’ form of fashion included loosewoven, ‘unravelling’ mohair jumpers and tornlooking dresses and tops decorated with metal chains and safety pins. Clothes at Seditionaries were also known for their controversial graphics.

The highly-charged imagery screen-printed onto frayed-looking T-shirts and muslin tops included swastikas, the Queen with a safety pin through her lips, a pair of naked breasts printed at chest height and pornographic cowboys. Other T-shirt designs hint at the direction in which Westwood’s tastes would develop. Her ‘nippled’ T-shirt uses bunched fabric as a way of ‘clothing yet unclothing the body’, demonstrating a form of provocation that is more cheeky than aggressive.

She and McLaren’s next collection, and the first they ever took to the catwalk, was ‘Pirate (Autumn/Winter 1981)’.

With clothes that evoked what has often been described as an “age of highwaymen, dandies and buccaneers”, the collection was named for its “plundering of ideas and colours from other places and periods”. It featured loose-bottomed, wide-striped Buccaneer trousers, and oversized shirts worn with draped sashes. Partly inspired by Westwood’s interest in silhouettes and portrait paintings of the 17th and 18th century, what became known as the ‘New Romantic’ look was hugely influential, and filtered quickly through to the mainstream via some of the era’s leading musical acts.

Many of the items sold at ‘Seditionaries’ were worn by members of the Sex Pistols (1975 – 78), the punk group McLaren had brought together to exploit what he saw as youth culture’s readiness for a protest-based band. The break up of the Sex Pistols and punk’s sudden absorption into the mainstream left Westwood feeling confused and empty. Turning 40, and with a new interest in ‘high’ culture, she felt drawn to more subtle means of subverting the establishment and began to look for different versions of an outsider aesthetic.

A punk archetype, these trousers mix references to army combat gear, motorcyclists’ leathers and fetish wear, and feature a zippered seam under the crotch, a removable ‘bum flap’ and ‘hobble’ straps that restrict movement.

Inside out

The Victoria and Albert Museum hosts an exhibition about the history of the style statement: bags.

The Victoria and Albert Museum is hosting an exhibition until the sixteenth of January 2022, named ‘Bags Inside Out.’ The exhibition claims to explore the style, function, design and craftsmanship of the ultimate accessory. Alongside this, there is a shop which enables the visitor to purchase a souvenir, some more specific to the museum and some more specific to the exhibition itself. This includes the book, titled the same as the exhibition.

Winter always brings everyone to the capital city: London, as there are many romantic and family-orientated activities, surrounded by the picturesque lights and joyous atmosphere. An exhibition is perfect to break up the long day, especially as all London museums are free. Where the exhibition itself is not free, it is reasonably priced and offers family deals. A single entry costs £10-13 for a walk around that will change your perspective of the accessory forever.

When you first walk in, you are greeted by the introduction sign, enlightening visitors to the magic of this accessory. “From coveted designer classics to commonplace totes and rucksacks, bags are an everyday necessity as well as a style statement. These often-sculptural objects are designed in an array of shapes and materials, from delicate silk or sturdy leather to innovative plastics and intricate metal. Contained within is an assortment of personal and professional possessions. The shape, size and materials of a bag may provide clues about what’s inside while another will give nothing away, carefully shielding and protecting its contents.

Written and designed by Sofia Wells

Throughout history and across cultures, this ubiquitous accessory can be considered both as a private possession and a public statement. Being on display, bags can be imbued with symbolic values, always revealing something about their owners, whoever they may be. The allure of bags is as multi-faceted as the various objects and different meanings they convey, from one place to another.”

The visitor is then guided through the two-floor exhibition, with bags from very early history, for different purposes and designs. Paired with this, descriptive text contextualising the details of each individual bag to give an interactive experience for the visitor. Opposing traditional exhibitions, it is not organised in chronological order, but by functions and purpose. The sections include utility, travel, for every occasion, celebrity endorsement, a sense of belonging, status and identity, an understatement, adornment, carrying a message, wearing art and the making of.

This is just one of the many amazing bags at the exhibition, which each hold their very own interesting story, grab those tickets to view and drool over more. The detailed and inspiring exhibition is certainly worth a visit, not just when you’re next in London, but to plan a trip for it.

The book, written by Lucia Savi, published in 2020 is a short history of bags, as told through forty highlights from the exhibition. Even showcasing the illustrations, materials and the making of. At just £10 there is the perfect guide to the ultimate accessory.

Focusing on the adornment section reveals that evening bags can finish an outfit like a piece of fine jewellery. Showcasing that some bags are selected for their beauty rather than for functionality as they signify exclusivity. Renowned jewellers such as Lachloche and Tiffany & Co. are among those who have made some of the most covetable and treasured vanity cases for evening wear. To find out more about the other sections, get those tickets booked. Focusing on an individual bag, the ‘diary milk’ clutch bag needs talking about. Designed by Anya Hindmarch, 2004, this designer is known for recreating everyday objects as wearable pieces. She took the recognisable and popular British product, transforming it into something desirable and fashionable. Purple satin, decorated all over in sequins and beads, to replicate a dairy milk bar itself, creates a whimsical evening bag, retailing from £875.

Straight from the shower. Mario Testino is a well-known, and respected photographer, and has photographed the likes of the modern supermodel such as the Hadid sisters, Jenners, Zendaya, Kate Moss, to name just a few. Testino also has shot notable members of the royal family, such as Diana, Princess of Wales for an exhibition which was displayed in Kensington Palace in 2005. He also shot her last official portraits for Vanity Fair, before her untimely death in 1997. He said “Photographing Diana, Princess of Wales for Vanity Fair in 1997 was one of the most memorable days of my career. I am honoured to have been asked to show some of the photographs from that day in surroundings as unique as Kensington Palace and design the rooms that pictures and dresses are to be exhibited.

The ongoing series, published on Testino’s Instagram, has grown to become a liberating lens: “. I think girls and guys feel this freedom at being able to express themselves because there is no predetermined way of how they should put the towel on. You can do anything you want… wear it however you want” Testino said. The series rose to fame when celebrities started becoming involved in the series and people enjoyed the aesthetic and core meaning of the images. You name them famous model wise; they’ve been in the shoot. The images tell a range of stories which is exactly what Testino wanted from the shoots, each image is posed differently, and the model interprets the towel in different ways.

The shoots are inspiring in the photography world, and a clever and challenging concept for young and budding photographers to recreate and put their own spin on the works of Testino, a pioneer in the photographic world.
