BABY & PARENTS RESCUED FROM SINKING VESSEL RESCUERS came to the aid of a sinking motor boat after its crew issued a mayday distress call.

The 7.5-metre vessel, which had two adults and a baby on board, had suffered engine failure and was taking on water.

Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS) was tasked to assist the vessel by UK Coastguard at 1320 on Good Friday and its crew – who were on duty at the station – were immediately launched.

Pack said: ‘When we arrived at the vessel we placed a crewman on board with a salvage pump and he assessed the situation.

‘The water ingress was controlled and we made sure the occupants were safe and well before deciding to tow the boat back to Gosport Marina where specialist lifting equipment was arranged by UK Coastguard.’

About us WELCOME to the first quarterly edition of the GAFIRS OnScene Magazine. Every three months we’ll be bringing you the latest news and information about the work of your local, independent lifeboat service.

In 2016, Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS) attended 112 incidents in The Solent and Portsmouth Harbour, saving the lives of two people. Already in 2017, our volunteer crews have responded to 25 incidents.

What is Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service?

Known locally as GAFIRS, the service is located at the eastern end of Stokes Bay, Gosport. It was founded in 1969 following a tragic drowning in Stokes Bay. Its lifeboats are on 24-hour call-out to UK Coastguard with its entirely unpaid voluntary members saving lives every year in the local waters.

Is GAFIRS part of the RNLI? No. At a glance you may assume the impressive lifeboat station is part of the RNLI, but you’d be wrong. It is in fact one of 64 independent lifeboat stations located around the UK which rely entirely on local support for their fundraising.

How important is GAFIRS to The Solent?

GAFIRS forms an integral part of the search-and-rescue infrastructure in The Solent. As such, it can be called upon at a moment’s notice, day or night, all year round and in the worst of weather and sea states.

How are the GAFIRS lifeboats called out?

As a declared facility, GAFIRS lifeboats are on pager call-out with UK Coastguard. From pager activation to launching the lifeboat takes just 15 minutes. Additionally, from March through until November, the lifeboat station is manned every Saturday, Sunday and bank holiday.

The duty crew are available from 0930 until 1800, which means the lifeboat is at immediate readiness to launch.

Are GAFIRS crew paid?

No – they are all volunteers. There are no paid directors, managers, fundraisers, lifeboat crews or shore teams. Everyone at GAFIRS gives their valuable time up for free. If you’d like to help, see p11 for details.

How is GAFIRS funded?

GAFIRS’ primary source of income is through public and corporate donations. The Lifeboat Lotto (see p14) provides a vital regular income.

How do people become part of GAFIRS or help?

Anyone wishing to join can obtain more information at GAFIRS.org. uk or stop by the station on a duty day, where any of the crew will be happy to help. We are always looking for fundraisers, too – please contact James Baggott using the details (left) to find out how.

Less than an hour later, GAFIRS lifeboat was back on the water, this time tasked by the Coastguard to investigate reports of a dismasted yacht.

A dredger had reported the 20ft sailing vessel was potentially in trouble and GAFIRS located it by the submerged barrier, off Southsea. The vessel was making way using its engine and a makeshift sail but the occupants

were more than happy to carry on back to Chichester Harbour.

‘Contact details of the crew were passed to UK Coastguard so they could monitor their safe return to harbour,’ said Mr Pack.

The incidents were the 23rd and 24th of the year. GAFIRS is one of the busiest lifeboat stations in the UK. It is manned entirely by volunteers on pager call-out to the Coastguard 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Last year its volunteers gave up more than 12,000 hours.

Search for missing person and yacht aground – a night’s work for GAFIRS GOSPORT & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service’s two lifeboats were called into action twice in one evening by UK Coastguard.

The volunteer crews were paged by the Coastguard at around 2230 on March 14 to assist with a search for a missing person, with both the service’s lifeboat and smaller inshore lifeboat called out.

After a four-hour search the crews were stood down – but while returning to station were retasked to a vessel aground in the northern reaches of Portsmouth Harbour.

The 19ft sailing vessel had run aground in Spider Lake earlier in the day and had attempted to refloat at high tide, however the attempts were unsuccessful.

The yacht, which had two people on board, was stuck fast in the mud and even with the tide at its highest couldn’t be refloated. Such was the shallow state of the water, Gosport

Nightvision used in search inshore lifeboat (ILB) was called in to help reach the vessel, as it could cope with the shallow water more safely than the larger lifeboat.

‘The crew of the ILB managed to get close enough to help the crew off the stricken vessel, which they anchored safely to return to when the tide was at its highest,’ explained GAFIRS senior coxswain Brian Pack.

‘Although they were a little cold after waiting out for the tide, they were both safe and well and we returned them to Port Solent, where they soon warmed up.’

Dedicated volunteers honoured by GAFIRS TWO dedicated lifesaving GAFIRS volunteers have been recognised for decades of service.

At the service’s annual general meeting held on March 24, two outgoing committee members were awarded honorary lifetime membership in thanks for their years of hard work.

The ceremony was carried out by GAFIRS joint presidents, the Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Lynn Hook and the Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Connie Hockley.

Chris Rudd, who joined GAFIRS as a 13-year-old cadet in 1977, stepped down from his position of senior helm at the AGM after 12 years in charge of the service’s crew.

He said: ‘It is with sadness that I step down from a role I have loved for so many years, but as I’ve moved to Jersey it wasn’t possible to maintain my involvement to the level I had previously.’

Also awarded honorary lifetime membership at the meeting was outgoing fundraising officer Joyce Thomas.

Mrs Thomas has been in the key role for 16 years and was instrumental in setting up the Lifeboat Lotto, which is now the service’s biggest source of income. GAFIRS chairman Keith Thomas said: ‘The work Joyce has put into the GAFIRS over those 16 years has been incredible.’

Broken safety vessel assisted RESCUERS were called out by UK Coastguard to a boat in trouble outside Portsmouth Harbour.

GAFIRS were mobilised just after 1500 on February 15 to assist the 4.5m RIB that had broken down in the harbour swashway.

The vessel was acting as safety cover to three sailing dinghies – all double manned with students – but was unable to carry out its duties after its engine stopped and couldn’t be restarted.

A spokesman for GAFIRS said: ‘We were soon on scene and able to assist the broken-down vessel by attaching a tow line. We then

The vessels were escorted across the harbour to Camber Dock, Old Portsmouth, where they were all recovered back to shore.

Yacht pulled free from bank GAFIRS lifeboat launched to a mayday distress call after a yacht ran aground.

The 40ft Beneteau, which had eight people on board, had struck Hamilton Bank, outside Portsmouth Harbour, and issued a mayday call on April 9.

GAFIRS placed a crewman on board who rigged a tow line and the boat was pulled free. There were no reported injuries and, after the vessel was checked over for damage and water ingress, it was able to safely go on its way.

Injured boy rescued A 17-YEAR-OLD boy who had fallen out of a capsized dinghy and sustained a head injury was plucked from the sea.

GAFIRS were alerted by a fellow sailor who had seen the boy fall out of his dinghy and hit his head.

Gosport ILB coxswain Chris Newbrook said: ‘The casualty was clinging to the underside of his boat.

We helped him on board and provided treatment.’

The male was plucked from the water and taken back to Gosport Lifeboat Station. An ambulance then took him to Queen Alexandra Hospital for further assessment.

Emergency services to showcase their skills at GAFIRS open day POLICE, fire and ambulance crews will be among the large collection of services showcasing their equipment at GAFIRS’ 10th Emergency Services Day. The event starts at 1100 and runs until 1600 on Sunday, July 16, and is free to attend.

GAFIRS plans to work with the Coastguard search-andrescue helicopter, based at Leeon-the-Solent, to demonstrate the work the independent lifeboat service carries out when working with casualties.

Chip-pan fire safety, saving a life, a look inside a liferaft and a joint frontline emergency services demonstration are also set to take place at the free event.

Man falls out of boat alongside pier RESCUERS were called to assist a vessel that had got into trouble after mooring up alongside a Southsea pier.

GAFIRS was paged by UK Coastguard on March 30 to reports of a vessel in distress at Clarence Pier. The skipper of the cabin cruiser had fallen into the water and the second person on board was struggling to recover them.

When Gosport lifeboat launched, the skipper had been recovered to the boat and it was making its way

into Portsmouth Harbour under the supervision of the police boat Sir Geoffrey Rackham.

GAFIRS senior helm Brian Pack said: ‘When we arrived in Portsmouth Harbour the casualty vessel was about to come alongside at Camber Dock. My crew helped the casualties off the boat and into the care of the ambulance and we towed the vessel to a safe mooring in Haslar.’

The casualties were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Signage firm steps in to help GAFIRS clock up rescues A SIGN company has used its expertise to create a new status board for GAFIRS. Top Notch Signs, based at Heritage Business Park, Gosport, created the sign, which will be used to clock up the number of rescues the charity has attended.

CREWQ&A Our members are all selfless volunteers, dedicating their time with the common values and drive to save lives at sea. Here, OnScene introduces you to one of our crew, Ian Tautz. A husband, father and serviceman, Ian has dedicated many hours to the service and rescued people in their time of need What is your role within the service?

I’m currently crew 18, a trainee ILB coxswain and have recently taken on the role of station officer, maintaining and preserving the infrastructure and facilities of the lifeboat station.

How did you become involved with GAFIRS? I’d always been fascinated by lifeboats as a child and when my family and I settled down locally, I decided I wanted to support a local charity.

GAFIRS was at the opposite end of the bay and it seemed to be the perfect opportunity to get involved. My wife responded to a post on social media and three years later I’m still volunteering.

Is there a rescue that stands out in your mind?

Yes, a man overboard in the central Solent. He’d fallen off his boat while stepping to another larger vessel and subsequently the tide swept him quickly away from his boat. Luckily, we were on our way back from another tasking when we spotted him, so recovered him, checked him over and took him back to his boat.

What is it like being part of GAFIRS? It’s a great feeling, knowing you’re supporting a local charity and providing a crucial service.

What has been your favourite moment with the service?

Completing my crew test for full crew status.

What would be your biggest piece of advice to users of the beach/sea?

Respect the sea. Mother Nature is unforgiving.

How does your job help in your voluntary role?

I work for the MoD and have been fortunate to travel the world, meet lots of different people and manage defence projects. The leadership, teamwork and communication qualities have stood me in good stead at GAFIRS, so too has the diversity of working with people from different backgrounds.

Lifeboat crews put vital new stretcher through its paces

Drifting pleasure craft towed to safety by GAFIRS

IN A PITCH-BLACK, smoke-filled tunnel, GAFIRS volunteer crew learnt how to use a vital piece of rescue equipment.

Thanks to a specially modified truck from Alpha Training Solutions, GAFIRS crew clambered into tight spaces – like those which they’d find when working on yachts in The Solent – to test extricating a casualty using the service’s new Saviour Tactical Stretcher.

The stretcher is a special piece of equipment designed to help search-and-rescue organisations evacuate casualties from tricky, tight locations.

GAFIRS beach rescue officer Chris Newbrook said: ‘This

GAFIRS senior coxswain Brian Pack said: ‘We soon located the stricken vessel, which was drifting near a much larger craft, and placed a crewman on board.’

GAFIRS towed the boat to Gosport Marina, where it was placed safely alongside with the help of Hill Head Mobile Coastguard team.

The special training truck stretcher is used by lifeboat organisations, search-and-rescue teams, the fire, police and ambulance services to safely get casualties out of difficult locations.

It is flexible, easy to use and this training was perfect to put it through its paces.’

The new stretcher is now operational on the lifeboat.

GAFIRS vice chairman (strategic) Steve Ray worked on our new lifeboat project for two years. Here, he answers some questions about the Joan Dora Fuller, which came into service in April 2016 How big is the Joan Dora Fuller?

She’s 9m long, 3.15m wide and weighs around 4,800kg.

What engines does she use?

Two Yanmar 8LV, 4.42-litre turbo diesel V8s producing 320bhp each, driving two Hamilton waterjets via an electrically controlled reversible gearbox.

How fast can she go?

Top speed is approximately 43 knots – which is about 50mph. She will comfortably cruise at 35-40 knots with additional personnel and equipment.

What sort of kit is on the boat?

There’s a variety of equipment to help rescue vessels and save lives. The kit includes advanced medical kit such as an automatic external defibrillator (AED) and oxygen, search lights and thermal imaging cameras. There is also VHF direction-finding equipment for homing in on a casualty vessel’s radio transmissions, a chart plotter, tow lines, radar and depth sounder. In addition there is a tool kit with damage control items to stop leaks.

Is any other equipment used?

Yes. Extra equipment can be taken depending on the rescue situation, including more advanced medical equipment (for paramedic use), stretchers, mud rescue equipment (including inflatable raft/ sled) and a salvage pump for removing flood water.

Why is the new boat so good?

The hull form, combined with the four special shockwave seats that soak up impact from waves, offer excellent crew protection, reducing fatigue and the risk of injury. The thermal imaging camera is a step change in capability and greatly improves the range at which the crew can spot a person in the water.

Why did GAFIRS need a new boat?

We were in the privileged position of having received a bequest that was ring-fenced for a new lifeboat. While we could have deferred this, our assessment was that the uplift in capability, crew protection and sustainability (more availability to Coastguard through better reliability and more readily available spares) offered by replacing our previous lifeboat justified the immediate acquisition of a new lifeboat.
