Meet the team
james baggott editorial director, new autos
I
started my career in the motor industry at Britain’s biggest selling weekly car magazine, Auto Express, back in 2002. Employed as the title’s consumer reporter, I covered new product launches while manning the phones of the mag’s busy Watchdog department.
After two years at the magazine, I decided to leave for the delights (and slightly quieter life) in the world of freelance. Covering the motoring industry, I reported for national newspapers, including the Sunday Times and Metro, magazines like Auto Express and BBC Focus as well as popular motoring websites such as MSN Cars and AOL’s Autoblog. In 2007 I helped launch Niche Motor Finance, a magazine that catered for finance professionals in car dealerships, for Niche Publishing. After a year editing that title, the publishing house fell on hard times as the credit crunch bit, so I decided to take a leap of faith and branch out on my own. In February 2008, I took out a personal loan which covered the first month’s print and postage bill of Car Dealer Magazine. Now, some four years later, Car Dealer has become one of the UK’s leading motor trade magazines – and I’m still paying off that personal loan… Car Dealer serves motor trade professionals with industry news, analysis and reviews that help them do their business better – and most importantly, make more money. The magazine has grown into a trusted brand that now offers readers a popular iPhone App, a free-to-download-and-subscribe-to iPad App, as well as holding a host of popular award ceremonies and conferences. Car Dealer’s team has won the recognition of the industry too. In 2011 it was awarded Trade Publication of the Year, while I’ve personally won highly commended accolades from the Guild of Motoring Writers and Headline Auto in editor of the year, journalist of the year and feature writer of the year categories. Car Dealer Magazine’s staff writer, James Batchelor, has also been recognised for his work winning the Rising Star of the Year Award from Headline Auto in 2011. The desire to launch a new publication – especially for consumers – has been burning for years. Now, by collaborating with the talented team behind New Autos, I’m delighted I’ve finally got the chance to help bring a new brand into the motoring publishing arena. Why a magazine? Well, simply because I passionately believe that although digital platforms play a vital role – and a very important one in the New Autos business – consumers still get a huge amount of pleasure out of reading a physical magazine. New Autos is aimed at all consumers – and our jargon-free tests and reports will become a vital component in new car buyers’ decision making. By investing in a printed magazine we’re showing the industry we believe there’s a future for publishing, but only in a unique and tailored way that targets the right people… car buyers! New Autos fills that gap – and I’m very excited to be a part of it.

commercial director, new autos he Auto Network is a group of leading automotive websites providing car information to car buyers and helping them through the task of buying a new or used car.
The Auto Network began life in 2002 as a single car-buying website, Askaprice.com, which I founded at the tender age of 19! The website was a pioneer in the UK new car lead generation marketplace. I wanted to cater for buyers at every stage of the buying process from the early research stages to finding and negotiating prices to comparisons across a range of sources. To do this, we formed strong relationships with OEMs and dealerships to create a network of leading automotive websites capable of guiding a new car buyer through every stage of the car buying process. The Auto Network’s expansion included purchasing new car comparison website Oneswoop.com from Norwich Union. From in-house publications such as MotorTorque. com to client-built websites such as the Perrys Motors content channel, our range of websites now covers all areas of buying a new car. As a result, the company is perfectly positioned to generate new car leads through test drive, brochure and new car price requests. The success of this approach has led to rapid expansion. With £1m-plus turnover and staff covering digital development, automotive journalists, social media, search and PPC, call centre staff and management, The Auto Network is the UK’s leading service for new car buyers and lead generation.

PUBLISHING director, new autos
hile starting my media career in women’s magazines, most of my life has been in motoring publishing. Way back before the web I was working for United News and was drafted into a project team to look at the car publishing sector in the UK. Some of you will remember when the UK’s two oldest weekly car magazines were merged. Motor was folded into Autocar to become Autocar & Motor (the Motor name was soon dropped). This had left a possible gap in the market, which was spotted by German publisher Axel Springer Verlag. It offered UK publishers the opportunity to adopt its Auto Bild formula and join a European grouping with access to news and photographs (Auto Europe Group, then with the title in Germany, Italy and France, but now with over 35 editions in 36 countries). Thus, the United Magazines Publishing Services arm of Express Newspapers launched Auto Express in 1988 as a JV with Springer. I ran the partnership as I was in the right place at the right time! We went on to build Auto Express into Britain’s biggest-selling motoring weekly, a position it holds to this day, albeit, as with all paid-for motoring titles, with a declining circulation. The title was later sold to its current owners Dennis Publishing where I became the motoring division’s Group Publishing Director responsible for successfully expanding the group which now includes EVO and Octane and associated websites.

es Flynn was responsible for building Auto Express into the household name it is today. By the end of his time at Dennis Publishing he was responsible for sales across the Dennis Motoring Division, which included Auto Express, Evo, Octane and Land Rover Monthly. He has forged fantastic relationships in the industry and is looking forward to building on those even further with his involvement in the exciting New Autos project.

What is the concept?
- A multi-media offering for active car buyers. - Website, Twitter, Apps, Videos, YouTube channel. - A FREE monthly quality magazine exclusively mailed to our database of active car buyers.
smal
Who is it aimed at?
- Active, in-market car buyers. - The Auto Network harvests thousands of active car buyers’ details every month. - Details are fully qualified and will create an organic database for the new magazine. - Mailed directly to 40,000 car buyers every month. - Readers are not browsers, they’re primed purchasers.
What makes it different?
- Editorial will be jargon-free and simple to understand. - New car news will be analysed to explain what it really means, road tests will be bite-sized chunks that even your gran could understand and find useful. - We’ll round up the best buys in each crucial car category in a series of top 10s. - Our biggest difference will be our readers though – they’re buyers who have shown an active interest in buying a new car, not window-shopping petrol-heads who just want to read about cars.

THE MAGAZINE Unique Distribution Model New Autos will be distributed to 40,000 active car buyers every month by mail. These car buyers will be carefully selected and qualified as active car buyers from the vast database of The Auto Network. These active car buyers will receive New Autos for a period of four months – in month one it will be explained that they are receiving the magazine because they are actively searching for a new car.
The Car Buying Cycle
Research suggests that the average car buying cycle is four months.* The four-month mailing cycle for New Autos, with web support, is specifically designed to optimise impact within the prime decision-making period.
In month four, readers will be advised that their free subscription is coming to an end. Following the initial four-month launch cycle, the ‘oldest’ 10,000 names on the list will be replaced by a new set of 10,000 car buyers. This will continue on a rolling basis guaranteeing that our distribution list will be constantly changing and refreshed – ensuring your message is always reaching active, real car buyers.

Buying Advice Columns
The New Autos advice will be digested in a series of columns in the back end of the magazine that will remove the shroud of secrecy that often surrounds many aspects of the car buying process. We’ll take the fear out of buying and help remove as many obstacles as possible that stop car enquirers becoming buyers.
Ford’s rival to the just-launched Vauxhall Astra VXR and the established Renaultsport Megane 265 and Volkswagen Golf GTi. With production of another fast Focus RS uncertain, the new ST could be the hottest current-generation Focus available and this time it is serious about taking the Golf GTI’s scalp as 8
top hot hatch. It is also Ford’s first global performance car.
What’s under the bonnet?
The ST might have dropped a cylinder, now with four cylinders rather than the previous five, but there’s certainly no lack of performance and a clever sound enhancer makes you think otherwise. The turbocharged 2.0litre Ecoboost engine has 10 per cent more power, with a higher 154mph top speed and increased 250Nm of torque. Acceleration to 60mph comes up in just 6.3 seconds.
What’s the spec like?
The ST is available to order now and there are three specification levels to choose from – helpfully labelled as ST-1, ST-2 and ST-3. ST-1 has supportive, colour-coded Recaro seats, the ST-2 adds part-leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and auto lights and wipers. Range-topping ST-3 versions have power, heated leather seats, bixenon headlights, rear parking sensors and keyless entry. Prices start from £21,995 for the ST-1 and rise to £25,495 for the ST-3, with first deliveries expected in September.

What’s it like to drive?
There’s excellent steering feel for starters, yet the ST still feels agile and amazes by how much power can be carried through corners. One word of warning though: should the systems intervene, it can feel artificial. Considering the ST is supposed to be a hot hatch, its ride is surprisingly resolved, with all but the worst road damage filtered out of the cabin. Dynamically, the new estate is equal to the hatch. You won’t feel short-changed – we didn’t notice any difference.

What do we think of it?
We think the Focus ST could potentially be the Golf GTI beater that Ford hopes it will be. It is as easy to drive, live with and as practical as the standard hatch and estate – and now offers a sharper driving experience. On the right road, this fast Ford has the power to entertain like nothing else in this class.

Peugeot 208 1.2 Active THE KNOwledge good enough to beat a fiesta? looks close to us
BY James Batchelor
@NewAutosBatch
What’s the spec like?
What is it?
Peugeot’s all-new supermini challenger aimed squarely at the sector-leading Ford Fiesta. The maker hopes cute looks, competitive pricing and high spec will be enough to tempt buyers away from rivals.
What’s under the bonnet?
A wide variety of petrols and diesels, with sales set to be split equally between them. Our pick is the 1.2. It’s great to drive yet economical.
The range starts with the Access model for £9,995, but the most popular is expected to be Active, costing from £11,695. It includes air con, a touchscreen display, 15-inch alloys, cruise control and Bluetooth There are plenty of options too, notably sat nav which is a little fussy to use.
What’s it like to drive?
Actually really rather good. Composed and fun to drive, the ride quality is impressive. Sadly, the driving position is strange, with the tiny steering wheel obscuring the

clocks and the steering is over-light.
What do we think of it?
We like it. It’s a massive improvement on the old 207, and it’s clear there’s a very good car in there waiting to escape (a sporty GTI is coming). However, the design is a little fussy inside and out, and the Ford Fiesta range is a wellestablished and popular rival that’s better and more fun to drive.

WANT A PREMIUM MPV? Mercedes may have the car
Mercedes Benz B-Class THE KNOwledge BY James Batchelor
@NewAutosBatch
Mercedes-Benz sold just over 34,000 units of the old B-Class. This new car aims to continue that.
What is it?
This new B-Class is a practical, premium MPV-like offering and rivals cars like the the Ford C-Max, VW Golf Plus and Renault Scenic.
What’s under the bonnet? There’s one petrol – a 1.6-litre unit with 121bhp or 155bhp – and a 1.8litre diesel with 108bhp or 135bhp.
What’s the spec like?

This is the car tasked with bringing sales success back to Peugeot. But has it got what it takes?

comes with 16-inch alloys, parking assist, auto headlights, and a fiveinch multimedia screen in the dashboard. Sport models start at £22,610 and gain ‘artificial leather’, sports suspension that lowers the ride-height by 15mm, and 18-inch two-tone alloys wheels.
What’s it like to drive?
The 108bhp diesel is the best choice – it’s strong, provides good performance and is economical. It is easy to drive thanks to light steering and good all-round visibility. Our test car had optional 17-inch alloys – this is the best size of wheel to

choose as the ride was comfortable.
What do we think of it?
This new car is a much stronger offering and does its best to match its premium positioning in the market. It’s pricey but we can’t see this being too much of a problem as the car both looks better and is built more sturdily. It’s also a step up from the previous, oddly-shaped B-Class. We think it’s certainly worth a look.
