CARDIFF VOLUNTEERING HELPING YOU TO HELP OTHERS! 2017/18 VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

A BIT ABOUT US! Cardiff Volunteering was formed in August 2015 to provide a comprehensive volunteering service for Cardiff University students. We are the Students’ Union’s in-house Charity governed by a Board of Trustees, including current students. Our Board Members meet several times over the academic year to make key decisions about the way the charity is run. We run over 60 projects working with a variety of groups in the community, including children, young people, the elderly, those with additional needs and much more! We have a range of regular projects and one-off opportunities, so there is sure to be something to suit anyone who’d like to try volunteering. We’re based in the Skills Hub on the 2nd floor of the Students’ Union. Here you’ll find the Volunteering Manager and Volunteering Coordinators, who will be able to answer any questions you may have before you apply. Our Volunteering Coordinators manage the day to day running of the charity, including communicating with Lead Volunteers and organising events.

GIVE SOMETHING BACK Cardiff Volunteering is a registered charity. As a charity, we rely on fundraising throughout the year to help support our work. We do this through hosting events such as Jailbreak and the Student Sleepout. Following the opening of a brand new Co-op store on the ground floor of the Students’ Union building in December last year, we’re excited to announce that the Cardiff Volunteering charity has been chosen as one of the local causes they support. From now until October 2017, money raised through the Co-op membership scheme will go towards helping Cardiff Volunteering run their great projects providing volunteering opportunities for students. By becoming a member of the scheme you can earn points each time you shop. You can spend these points on future purchases, and 1% of everything you spend will be donated to a charity of your choice. All you need to do is select Cardiff Volunteering as your charity and they will receive the 1%. Pop into your nearest Co-op store (there’s one on the ground floor of the SU building) pick up a Membership Card, go online and choose your charity (hopefully us!) and start saving as well as helping Cardiff Volunteering.

LEAD VOLUNTEERS Our lead volunteers are students who have taken the additional responsibility of managing a project. They are the first point of contact for volunteers and will manage attendance, plan activities and hold regular supervisions to ensure all volunteers are happy. Being a Lead Volunteer is a great way to gain invaluable employability skills which will add value to your CV and help you in your future career. All our Lead Volunteers receive bespoke training leading to a Certificate of Personal Development (Bronze) and are eligible to participate in the new Diploma of Professional Development in Leadership. Lead Volunteers will also have their role recognised formally on the University’s HEAR transcript alongside their degree qualification. There may still be spaces on certain projects for Lead Volunteers – contact us if you’d like more information or an application form!

“I began volunteering with Environmental Champions during my second year at Cardiff University. I study Geography and Planning and as it is a course with only a few contact hours per week, I found myself wanting to do something different with my free time during the week (when not in Bute library)! A year later I became Lead Volunteer on the project which has afforded me with increased confidence and Gwen Rhys Thomas improved communication and organisational Lead Volunteer skills whilst simultaneously providing Environmental Champions me with experiences I would not get by purely focussing on my academic studies. I have engaged with people from all walks of life beyond the student community, and have volunteered on projects which the Environmental Champions are very proud of. I greatly enjoyed my time as Lead Volunteer for such a worthwhile and effective project and would encourage anyone interested to volunteer for a cause they are truly interested during their time at Cardiff University.”

TOP 10 REASONS TO VOLUNTEER 1

Meet new people! It’s always good to meet people who have similar views and interests to you.

2

Build confidence. Volunteering is a lovely way to build your social skills and confidence.

3

Transferrable skills. Volunteering provides concrete evidence of skills including time management, organisation, communication & problem solving.

4

Experience for your CV. You need evidence and examples to back up your claims on your CV in a job interview or application.

5

Give back to the community. If you’re anything like us you will have fallen head over heels for the beautiful city that is Cardiff, and volunteering is one way you can give back to your new home.

6

Feel good. Links have been made between volunteering and improved mental health, but we don’t need scientific proof to know that nothing beats that feeling of brightening someone’s day.

7

The Cardiff Award. Volunteering is an integral part of the Cardiff Award. If you apply for this scheme, we can help you tackle the volunteering hours in a way best suited to you.

8

Make a difference. Volunteers provide such a valuable service to the community. Your work will not go unnoticed and our partner schools, care homes and external organisations are so impressed and grateful for the support you provide.

Volunteering is unavoidably fun - whether you are taking part in a weekly project, doing a one-off event or fundrasing through jailbreak, sleep-outs or the Hunger Games we gurantee that you will have a great time ... what more do you want! Cardiff Volunteering

USEFUL INFORMATION Training We want to prepare you as much as we can for your volunteering experience, so as part of the support we provide we run several training sessions at the beginning of the academic year to help you get started. For some projects training may be combined with a site visit to the place you’ll be volunteering. Some sessions will be compulsory and you must attend them to be considered for the project. All volunteers receive tailored training and mentoring relating to their projects - this could include Child Protection, Classroom Experience, Dementia Awareness, Basic First Aid and Conflict Resolution. All our volunteers are encouraged to undertake bespoke training leading to a Certificate of Personal Development (Bronze) and those in a leadership role are eligible to participate in the new Diploma of Professional Development in Leadership.

Certificates Cardiff Volunteering runs the Millennium Volunteer Scheme and certificates will be awarded upon completion of 50, 100 and 200 hours of volunteering. These are a great way of evidencing your commitment and skills to future employers ... and they look great on the wall too!

Transport All of our projects are within the local area and are easy to get to via various forms of transport.

6

Cardiff Volunteering

Your coordinator will be able to tell you what the best method of transport is for your project, let you know which bus or train to catch and where from! Please remember that we are a charity, so use the cheapest form of transport available to get back and forth to your project. Depending on the location of project and numbers travelling, taxis may work out cheaper - your coordinator will be able to advise you on this.

Policies and procedures In order to provide you with the support you deserve as volunteers we have ensured that we have the appropriate policies and procedures in place. Staff will be happy to make these available to you.

Expenses All expenses such as travel costs, resources for activities etc can be reimbursed directly into your bank account (but you MUST remember to keep all your receipts / tickets !) It doesn’t cost a thing to give back to your community.

CHECK IT OUT! - DBS CHECKS You’ll notice that for many of our projects you’re required to obtain something called a DBS. If your chosen project requires a DBS check, you won’t be able to start volunteering until you have one!

When should I apply?

DBS is a Disclosure and Barring Service check (It used to be called a Criminal Records Bureau check). It is basically a check, done by the government, to find out if you have any criminal convictions

You should start the DBS process as soon as you can because a DBS check can take anything from 2 to 8 weeks to go through from when we send your form off. Remember you won’t be able to start volunteering on a project that requires a DBS check without one! You can apply for a DBS with us at any time, but during Freshers’ we will be holding DBS surgeries on the following dates and times to help speed up the process:

Why do I need one?

DBS Surgery Dates:

If you have chosen to volunteer on a project where you will be in regular and close contact with children or vulnerable adults we are required, by law, to check your criminal background.

September: Friday 29th 10:00 to 14:00, Training Room 2.

What is it?

How do I get one? DBS checks for volunteers are free so you won’t have to pay anything. Cardiff Volunteering staff can guide you through the process. Just pick up a DBS form from our office in the SU, complete it (in BLACK ink and capitals!!), then return it to us along with the required (original) proofs of ID – don’t worry, we can tell you what is eligible to use! We then send the form off and when the relevant checks have been completed you will be sent your DBS certificate which you simply need to bring in to show us, then hey presto ... you’re good to go!

October: Wednesday 4th – 17:00-20:00, Training Room 2. Tuesday 10th – 14:00-17:00, Training Room 2. Tuesday 17th - 17:00-20:00, Training Room 2. Monday 23rd - 14:00-17:00, Training Room 2. Find out more: cardiffstudents.com/jobs-skills/ volunteering/dbs/

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS If you are an international student, volunteering can be a brilliant way to give back to your new home, meet new people and learn valuable skills. Last year’s Volunteer of the Year, Chuma Amazigo says:

Visa Restrictions

“Mohammed Ali once said: ‘Service to others is the rent you pay for your room on Earth’. I believe that for what I am given I should give back more. It gives me more joy to put a smile on the face of the least fortunate than watching my favourite football team win. That is my drive and passion for being a volunteer”

If you’ve got a Student Visitor Visa you can’t take part in long-term volunteering projects but you can get involved in our one-off events - CV staff can advise you about this.

Good news! As all our projects class as volunteering and NOT voluntary work, they are not part of the Tier 4 Visa, working restrictions for non-EU students.

Some projects require a DBS (criminal record) check, because you could work with vulnerable adults or children. These checks may differ depending on your home country. Come to the office for advice. If you have lived in the UK for less than 5 years you will also need to get a criminal record check from any other country you have lived in - these are sometimes called “Certificate of Good Conduct”, “Certificate of No Criminal Record” or “National Police Check”. The easiest thing to do is to call your Embassy in London and discuss it with them. Don’t forget - you’ll also need a DBS check for the time you’ve been in the UK, however short that is - CV staff can help with this. Look out for the No-DBS badge to easily find projects that don’t require the check. This will save you time if you want to get volunteering straight away.
