Cardiff postgraduate students’ association A warm welcome to all postgraduates! The Postgraduate Students’ Association committee would like to wish you a very warm welcome, and pass on our congratulations on getting accepted to study for a postgraduate degree here at Cardiff University! The association started out three years ago, at which time there was no crosscampus postgraduate community. Since then we have grown into a vibrant and inclusive community through running regular events and campaigning for postgraduate achievement and needs to be recognised within the University and Students’ Union. We also campaigned for the introduction of a full-time sabbatical officer role for postgraduate students (at the time of introduction only the seventh such role in the whole country). We strive to continue to build on our successes. We introduced a fortnightly pub quiz that quickly became incredibly popular. We organised “taster” events with other clubs and societies, which gave postgraduate students an opportunity to sample the range that Cardiff has to offer. We ran movie nights, not to mention our Christmas party and our celebration

of St Patrick’s Day. Each year now ends with our Annual Postgraduate Ball! We are very excited about the growth of the postgraduate community over the past few years, and we hope that with your help it will grow even stronger. Please check out our social events coming up throughout the year and get involved. From baking, dancing and hiking, to parties and meals – there will be something for everyone. So, find us on Facebook (facebook.com/CardiffPGA) and give us a like so that you don’t miss out on anything; you can also drop us an email at PostgraduateAssociation@ Cardiff.ac.uk if you have any questions; or you can stop by our stand at the Societies Fair in September for a chat. So, finally, welcome to Cardiff – we cannot wait to see you in September! On behalf of the Postgraduate Students’ Association committee. Matthew Jenkins Acting Committee Chair

student voice

The Students’ Union is a democratic membership organisation, and its main purpose is to represent you and your fellow students’ interests to the University and wider society. In the past the Union has fought to fix fees for international students, for 24h libraries and the earlier release of exam timetables. There are a number of ways in which you can raise issues you want the Union to tackle, as well as getting involved in things that are already on the agenda. Below you will find a brief description of different groups that lead our work and how you can get involved. Student Senate Student Senate creates and amends policy for the Students’ Union. That

means they decide what changes or improvements we should make or lobby for. Student Senate is made up of twenty-five senators that are elected in October during Autumn Elections. Senate meets five times a year and the meetings are open to all students. Any student can submit a motion or agenda item to Student Senate and all students are allowed to attend the meeting to argue for or against the issues on the agenda. You can find the agenda, minutes and details of the next meeting at cardiffstudents.com/senate If there is something you think can make the postgraduate experience better within the Students’ Union, make sure to submit a motion!

CARDIFF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ UNION 9

Elections Since we are a democratic organisation all representative positions with decision making power are filled through crosscampus elections. We run two sets of elections every year, the first take place in October for Student Senate and Scrutiny Committee. The second set of elections is held in February to elect the paid full-time Officers and ten Campaign Officers. The full time Officer team is made up of one President and six Vice Presidents including a Vice President Postgraduate Students. The Campaign Officer roles are voluntary and students take these up alongside their studies. They represent minority and liberation groups to the Students’ Union and University. These roles demand a variation of voices and we are looking for postgraduates to make their voices heard! There are two main ways of getting involved – by putting your name forward for a position you are interested in or by voting for the candidates you think will do a good job. Scrutiny Committee Scrutiny Committee is made up of 10 elected students who hold your representatives (including the Students’ Union President and Vice President Postgraduate Students) to account. They serve to scrutinise Elected Officers’

Your guide toate u Postgradin life cardiff

reports to make sure they are working in your best interests. All students can stand for election to the Scrutiny Committee which is elected in the October Autumn Elections. They will meet about eight times a year, on a Tuesday evening. You can see what the officers are working on and minutes from the Scrutiny Committee meetings at cardiffstudents.com/officers

Autumn Elections We will be holding the Autumn Elections in October to elect the following vacant Campaign Officer roles: • Ethical and Environmental Officer • LGBT+ Officer (open) • LGBT+ Officer (women’s) • Mature Students’ Officer • Welsh Language Officer • Women’s Officer If you are interested in becoming one of our Campaign Officers, or want to find out more about elections visit cardiffstudents.com/elections or e-mail Elections@Cardiff.ac.uk

Student Academic Reps What is a Student Academic Representative? A Student Academic Rep is a volunteer student who voices the comments, concerns and questions of their course to their School. Their role is to gather feedback from their course and take it to Student Staff Panels (SSPs) and Boards of Study to ensure the student voice is taken seriously at every level. In total there are over 1,100 Student Academic Reps across Cardiff University representing over 30,000 students. Postgraduate Research Representative (PGRR) Postgraduate Research Reps will also be invited to university-wide PGRR Forums. These forums, chaired by the VP Postgraduate, will give research students the chance to raise their issues directly with the Students’ Union. Become a Rep Reps play an integral part in empowering the student voice and we are always looking for new recruits. No prior experience is required; all we ask for is your enthusiasm and an open mind. As postgraduates your educational needs are often specialised and require particular attention. So by becoming a Rep you can take hold of your education, you can help shape your course or research experience and highlight where improvements need to be made. Being a Rep is a perfect opportunity to engage with students in your line of research and study, you’ll meet plenty of people along the way. You’ll get a chance to build networks with University staff and it will help you engage with senior academics. You can take part in quality assurance and improve academic standards at Cardiff University. Get involved, become a student academic rep! Any Questions? Contact: Jake Smith – Vice President Postgraduate Students. VPpostgraduate@Cardiff.ac.uk PgradOfficerCSU @PostgradCSU

CARDIFF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ UNION 11

Use Your Rep – What type of issues does a student Academic Rep deal with? Student Academic Reps can feedback any positive or negative comments you may have about your School, subject or module through attending Student Staff Panels which occur on average once a semester. As a result of being trained to signpost students to the relevant people, Student Academic Reps are also great sources of information regarding the various services Cardiff University and the Students’ Union has to offer.
