We’re looking forward to welcoming you to Cardiff. To help you get to know your fellow postgrad students and find out a little bit more about the city, we’ve put together a range of events for you to get involved in. The events highlighted have been developed specifically for postgrads so make sure you come along to those!

Thursday 17th September The Warm Up / 22:00 – 03:00 Venue: Y Plas (Entry with an All-Inclusive or Budget Wristband) Come join us for your first night of Freshers’ with guest Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens.

Welcome to cardiff friday 18th September International Fair / 12:00 – 18:00 Venue: Great Hall Find out what services and support are available for our international students and also visit the bric-a-brac stall for useful items for your room or flat.

Meet the Postgraduate Students’ Association / 19:00 Venue: The Taf This is a great chance to meet and get to know your postgrad association and other postgrads at Cardiff University over a few drinks in The Taf pub.


International Students’ Welcome Party / 19:30 – 23:00

UV Rave vs Paint! / 22:00 – 03:00

Experience a warm Welsh welcome, meet fellow international students and have a great evening trying out traditional Welsh dancing.

We’ve got a huge UV Rave in Y Plas featuring glowsticks and incredible UV Light Cannons and a glowing paint party in our Great Hall, don’t forget your boiler suit!

Welcome Party / 22:00 – 03:00 Venue: Y Plas (Entry with an All-Inclusive or Budget Wristband) Most people will have arrived by tonight, meaning that it’s going to be a big one. Come in your hall colours and meet your new neighbours with your coloured T-shirts you got with your wristbands.

saturday 19th September International Students’ Welcome Talk / 12:00 – 14:00 Venue: Great Hall Find out what to expect now you arrived in the UK. You’ll get advice on how to get online and help with your computer, how to adapt to life in the UK, how to get involved with volunteering, how to combine parttime work with studying and much much more help and support from experienced staff.

Big Red Bus Tour */ 12:00 – 13:00 Venue: Meet at the front of the Students’ Union (Give it a Go wristband event) Our guided bus tour offers the perfect introduction to Cardiff. Cruise by all the major Cardiff landmarks in this hour long bus tour to Cardiff Bay and back, all in spectacular vintage style.

Societies Fair Day 1 / 12:00 – 18:00 Venue: Great Hall & Y Plas The Guild of Societies will be taking over Freshers’ on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd September, with completely different societies represented each day.

Introductory Welsh Lesson* / 13:00 – 14:00 Venue: Students’ Union Room 4A (Give it a Go wristband event) Siarad Cymraeg? We’ll help you learn some simple Welsh phrases.

National Museum Tour / 14:00 – 15:30 Venue: Meet at the front of the Students’ Union

wednesday 23rd September St Fagans Trip / 11:00 – 16:30 Venue: Meet at the front of the Students’ Union (Give it a Go wristband event) A walk around Wales – from Celtic times to the present day. St Fagans is one of Europe’s leading open–air museums and Wales’s most popular heritage attraction.

Sports Fair / 12:00 – 18:00 Venue: Great Hall & Y Plas Want to join one of our Sports Clubs? Come and meet them in our Sports Fair.

Barry Island Trip / 13:00 – 17:00 Venue: Meet at the front of the Students’ Union (Give it a Go wristband event)

Where’s Wally / 22:00 – 03:00 Venue: Y Plas (Entry with an All-Inclusive or Budget Wristband) Don your woolly hat and stripes! Where’s Wally is not only a literature classic, but also a student fancy dress staple. All you’ve got to do is bring your red and white striped shirt.

We do like to be beside the seaside. Come and join us for an ice cream at Barry Island.

Café Crawl / 15:00 – 18:00 Venue: Meet in the Graduate Centre (drinks at your own expense) Tour the local coffee houses and cafés of Cardiff’s thriving café culture, and discover the best social hotspots for your caffeine fix.


Postgrad Meet & Mingle: College of Physical Sciences & Engineering / 20:00

Postgrad Cardiff Bay Boat Trip & Senedd Tour / 14:00 – 18:00

Venue: Meet in the Graduate Centre (£6 payable at Graduate Centre reception)

We’ll walk to the Waterbus, take a narrated cruise along the River Taff followed by a private tour of the Senedd – Wales’ National Assembly Building and finally enjoy some free time in the Bay before returning via the Waterbus.

Our week of rather fantastic fancy dress continues with the first ever Alphabet Party. The concept is simple - Choose your fancy dress costume based on the first letter of your name.

Volunteering is a great way to make a difference in your new local community. You’ll also get to meet loads of new people and have a lot of fun!

Let us take you shopping so you can stock up on everything you need for your new home.


Postgrad Indoor Mini Golf / 15:30 – 18:00 Venue: Meet in the Graduate Centre (£7.50 payable at Graduate Centre reception) Join us at Treetop Adventure Golf and tackle the Tropical Trail or Ancient Explorer, then brave the bonus 19th hole to win a free round. We’ll be walking from the Graduate Centre to the indoor golf venue in the city centre.

Highlights of Cardiff Nightlife / 20:00 Venue: Meet in The Taf (drinks at own expense) What better way to get to know the highlights of Cardiff’s nightlife than with a trip by current postgrads around a few of our favourites.

saturday 26th September Flux / 22:00 – 03:00 Venue: Y Plas & Great Hall (Entry with an All-Inclusive or Budget Wristband) It’s the return of Cardiff’s biggest student night featuring a dedicated room of foam!

sunday 27th September Freshers’ Ball / 22:00 – 03:00 Venue: Y Plas & Great Hall (Entry with an All-Inclusive or Freshers’ Ball ticket) Killer line-up, all building event with special guests TBC #tuxtime

monday 28th September Beach Fest / 22:00 – 03:00 Venue: Y Plas (Entry with an All-Inclusive or Budget Wristband) Holding on to Summer at Costa del Plas, full moon style. Featuring Guest Radio 1 DJ Matt Edmondson.

Postgrad ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ / 20:00 Venue: The Lodge Whether you are a dancer, have always fancied trying, or just want to come and meet new postgrads, come along - no experience or partners necessary.

wednesday 30th September Postgrad Quiz Night / 19:30 Venue: The Lodge, (£1 payable upon entry) A fun easy-going general knowledge quiz with free snacks and a cash prize for the winners. Feel free to come on your own and we’ll find you a team to play with!

Bring along your best baked efforts and see how you match up against your fellow postgrads!

saturday 3rd october Postgrad Welcome Fortnight Party / 20:00 Venue: Y Plas, (£3 payable online or upon entry) Join us for our big end of welcome fortnight party. We’re hosting a drinks reception and buffet to help you round off the week in style. Don’t forget to buy your tickets online at cardiffstudents.com!
